Hello Tumblr people.

Ok, firstly WE ARE FINE. WE ARE GOING TO BE 100% OK.

But also, my wife had a minor stroke, completely out of the blue, a few weeks ago. Again- We're ok! She was back to work within like 4 days and half of that was weekend. Our 5 year old didn't even have time to worry about it.

And while I do NOT need donations because I have like a nice little middle class career and everything...the hospital bills are rolling in and we owe like $600 for the ambulance because it was "out of network" and we live in a garbage country. I mean. Could be worse. I've had worse ambulance bills. But we are gonna be running full force into our in and out of network deductibles in the second month of the year once the overnight hospital stay bills and imaging bills roll in.

So, if you were ever inclined to download Secondhand Origin Stories, which is FREE and YOU CAN STILL DOWNLOAD FOR FREE WITH A COMPLETELY FREE CONSCIENCE (I can set it to any payment I want. I have chosen not to), well, then people kicking me $2 for a whole novel has helped me before. As does recommending my book to other people. A LIGHT IN THE FLAME begins directly after A SHADOW IN THE EMBER ends, with Sera’s plan out in the open, Nyktos’ trust broken, and Kolis attempting to take over the Shadowlands. A LIGHT IN THE FLAME was definitely my most-anticipated JLA book of the year, and I’m happy to report it was a deliciously good read! The romance, the action, the worldbuilding…I am simply obsessed with this series (and Nyktos, as everyone should be.)

After reading and reflecting, I have come up with one all-encompassing question. How did JLA keep up with such angsty and yearning in book two? Well, Sera and Nyktos go through the ringer in this book as they rebuild the trust that was broken in book one. Their character growth–and the growth of their relationship–was so beautiful, satisfying, and sincere. I absolutely loved every part of it!

Let’s take a look at some of the tropes found in this book that are simply *chefs kiss*:

Friends with benefits

Forbidden love

I’ll run away to protect you

Touch her and you die

Longing

Let me take care of you

Did I just see what I thought I just saw?

I can’t love but let me show you that I love you in other ways

Cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers

Note: I highly recommend going back and re-reading A SHADOW IN THE EMBER before cracking open A LIGHT IN THE FLAME, because you’re in for a wild ride from start to finish. (Also, I didn’t do a re-read beforehand and I had forgotten some of the secondary characters.)

This book has my heart right now. Being gay and living in a small conservative town, an Asian mc who must deal with racism, just the attention to several big problems for many, many Americans living in this country right now. And, not just mentioning these problems but speaking about them in this story in such an honest way.

Stevie and Nora are in love. They have a new life waiting for them in California. However, all of that changes when Stevie falls into a ravine and has permanent amnesia about the past two years after she wakes up from a coma.

So, this is a story of friendship and finding out who your true friends really are. About finding yourself. This is a story about falling in love, and then forgetting everything and falling back in love with a beautiful human who never gave up.

If you can't tell... I loved every piece of this book. It lives up to the hype and more. It's my new moody read for when I'm feeling cloudy.

Out April 4, 2023!

My first novel is already free

But people hate clicking links. I hate clicking links, so I understand and respect that.

So I wonder what would happen if, as I prep book 2 in the series, I started posting chapters on Tumblr. (Behind a cut. I’m not an animal.)

I wonder if some people would read it that way, if it was delivered to their app at a predetermined weekly time, with in-app links to previous chapters in case someone missed something, and a hashtag to follow.

Like don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled at the number of people who’ve read it since it came out. But also I lost touch with a lot of them since Twitter did what Twitter did. So I don’t have a way to tell them it’s about time for book 2.

Could serializing a book on here work that way, do you think?

It’s an angsty, queer, scifi/superhero YA/NA thing that leans very domestic and introspective. Lots of complicated found family dynamics. The angst is 90% not about the queerness even.

I dunno.
