The hallway is dark, gloomy, and dull with outdated paneling and a bare grey concrete floor. I’ve managed to make it down the hall and the door is in front of me, but my stomach is in knots, my heart pounds in my chest, and my lungs are afraid to breath. Behind that dull door is everything I’ve tried to escape in my life. All the demons of dread, terror, darkness, and of a life without hope. My life would forever be altered if I opened that door. But it was a test, they said. God wanted me to open the door. To obey. I wanted to desperately run for my life. I would loose even more than parts of my soul that day in 1999 in front of that door. And almost no one would know. Until today.

Last time I wrote here in my blog about my past, I was up to age seventeen. You don’t know what it took to escape my childhood home yet. You don’t know yet the struggles to survive in a new world, that I married, about the breakdown, or how I came to walk down that hallway on that day in 1999. But, with great trepidation after days of anxiety over the necessity to revisit the year of 1999, I have gathered my courage to tell this part of my story. To drop you mid-story into a later year. You will have to hold your judgment and your lack of knowledge of what all led up to it, for another time. My journey, i.e. my blog, consists of posts of present and past. One cannot appreciate the present without knowledge of the past.

I had fought to escape the doom of my childhood. The fears of the “End Times,” the “Mark of the Beast,” the loneliness of isolation, the feeling of my chance of having a life sucked away. I struggled mightily to find myself in the years that followed my childhood . I just didn’t want to be afraid anymore. As I was told, knowing God, or being saved, I would feel loved, be protected, safe, and at rest. If I could just get saved. If I just obeyed everything, I might have the chance to be saved.

The hallway I stood in that particularly dark day in 1999 was a main part of the small, ultra-fundamental, “only ones with the real truth” church I found myself in as a result of my search for that Salvation. Although I would not know it for years to come yet, it was an obvious next step from my fundamental upraising as a child. A story for another day.

In 1999, I had been married fourteen years to Grant, and had a beautiful daughter, named Violet. It was not a happy marriage, but the church frowned harshly on divorce and remarriage. Sadly, Grant had come from a very tragic background as well, and it had taken the life out of him. As a result of this and decisions of his own, his mentality was very diminished, that of perhaps a early teen. He was severely depressed, emotionally absent and often would not speak to me for weeks, he blamed me for our marriage, had no sense of responsibility, of parenting, or of the benefits of keeping a job or having goals. Although I did not see it in him at the beginning, I could never get through to him over the years. No safety, security, or sense of protection for me came from this relationship. I was forced to be the adult. A position he didn’t want to take up, but he resented me for doing so.

I had always dreamed about growing life and goals together to own a home of our own, but Grant was just fine with floating on the river of life. With his job history, I could not buy a house on my own although I worked. It was about 1998, that a relative gifted me with a small portion of money that they designated toward the down payment of a house. Receiving that money was a huge highlight, a ray of distant hope for a future. I was very aware that it was my only hope. It was a rare and only chance for me to have a bit of financial security. I put the money away and reveled in the hope it gave me. It was like an tire inner tube tossed in my stormy ocean. My treasure tucked away. Since no house was immediate, it also gave me some much needed security that I could have a start on taking care of my daughter and myself if Grant left us (he had) or worst perhaps, became more mentally challenged and I had to care for him as well.

Sometime at the start of 1999, the pastor of the church began to tell us about Y2K and the direness of it. He told us we needed to prepare for the horrors coming, that Y2K would likely bring to pass. We were being informed and warned by God to prepare. Not everyone would be getting the special information or advice we were. We were warned that it was a serious situation and that not many people outside the church would understand our preparations. Outsiders would likely think it was craziness.

I hadn’t heard anything about a “Y2K,” and I was shocked. Fear and hell fire were always part of the sermons already. This announcement immediately sent me back to all the terror of my childhood fears over the end of the world–this time it actually had a date and time. December 31, 1999 at midnight. Hadn’t I fought all this time to “breath” again? Now, I couldn’t believe this news. My whole being froze inside. NO. NO. I won’t go back there again. To that dark and deadly place of fear. I can’t.

Immediately following the service, Bonita, the pastor’s wife, knowing about the sermon ahead of time obviously, announced that us women needed to set a date that week to get together to study and familiarize ourselves with survival supply catalogues that she had, discuss what was needed, and start collecting for major disaster. She and the pastor, Donald, were aware of my background and saw my reaction to this profound news. I said, “I can’t go there.” I was firmly warned that this was God’s message, that if I didn’t submit and obey the warnings, God would not make sure I got the necessary information, he would not protect me, he had no obligation to bring me to Salvation, and the reminder that I was responsible for the welfare of Grant and Violet. Coming to the get-together that week was a test of obedience because that meeting would be the beginning of numerous such more private, “intimate” informational sessions–outside of the regular church services. I walked away. I would not go through that fear again.

I never wanted to come back again. I wanted away from the church. I wanted to run. I felt sick to my core. Like I hadn’t in years–a place I never thought I’d have to go back to internally or literally. Only ONE thing, brought me to standing in front of that door that week. One thing. My daughter. I couldn’t just think about what I wanted. I had to think of her future. What if I couldn’t take care of her or protect her? If I left the church, would I be the one who took her away from the place that “had the truth,” and keep her from getting saved one day? And my husband. He wasn’t going to care or take any responsibility for himself or her. It was all on me.

I stood in the hall in front of the door all alone. No one could see that I was there. They were behind the door. I could still turn around. My heart pounded with fear. I couldn’t breath. To enter that door was to cross the line, go back in time, and accept that all the things I had been taught to be afraid of happening to me were going to happen after all. That it was true. The darkness was real after all. If I entered the door, I allowed it back into my life in all its horror. I would be accepting it back. My body trembled in panic. I’ll never forget that moment because it was a door that hid all kinds of darknesses that were to come.

My hand turned the door knob and my feet walked into the small room that was behind the door. The rest of me was frozen. The women in the room, especially Bonita, acknowledge that my coming to the meeting was “obedience,” and I was accepted among the continued obedient “elected ones” for the truth.

I sat at the table in the room while Bonita seriously intimidated us with the information about things we would need to buy in preparations. How we should do the maximum we could do. What is saved money when one is facing the end of life as we knew it? Bonita and Donald knew of the money I had been gifted with toward a future house. As a family, Grant and I barely survived financially already. Grant started and ended jobs basically when he felt like it. When he didn’t “like” a job anymore, he felt no obligation to continue it or any rush to get another until his unemployment ran out and he was forced to look. Meager as it was, my job was the only secure income because I had to be the responsible one. It wasn’t because I wanted to be! I had to be. I already tithed faithfully to the church and gave above and beyond tithe most of the time. I never told anyone these things because one was to give cheerfully and without seeking attention. Most people outside the church didn’t know about Grant’s condition or my struggles, as complaining was not accepting God’s will for your life. I tried on occasion to say something but it was probably so subtle that it wasn’t noticed. No one looked deeper and I kept deeper hidden. Who would I tell anyhow? The “World” wouldn’t understand I was supposed to obey God no matter what was happening or how I felt. I really had no friends outside of church anyhow.

I had no money to be buying all the stuff I was supposed to buy to survive. In tears at that table that day, I confessed that I didn’t have money except my stashed bit for a house. That money was the sole and complete symbol of hope in my life and future. It was all I had and all I could foresee ever having again. I was told that I was lucky to at least have that money and what was owning a house going to do for me when the world was ending? If I held back and didn’t prepare because I didn’t want to let that money go, I was disobeying. Maybe God had provided the money because these times were coming upon us. I had opened the door; I had to continue to obey now. Was my money and dreams more important than protecting my daughter and husband? To say my heart was broken because I knew I would never have that money back is an understatement. It would be forever gone. Lost to me. Along with what it stood for. Spent on what I didn’t want. The secret life would grow even deeper and darker. I couldn’t tell anyone I was buying all this stuff for a thing called Y2K, and I sure couldn’t tell anyone in my family. After all, where did the money come from?

As the days and weeks ahead slowly passed, we were instructed more and more in the truth we would need for the days ahead, about the perils ahead, about what we needed to do, and how to respond. The warnings became all consuming. We needed to plan for the church to be feeding the starving, the homeless, and those who hadn’t prepared for Y2K but God might send to us to help. The list of what we needed never seem to end. Y2K was not a potential glitch in history, but the beginning of the rest of our lives. I needed to think of Violet’s possible marriage even in the midst of the dark years ahead since she wasn’t old enough to think of those things for herself yet. Some of the information and suggestions were out right and some strongly implied.

Now, note that the Donald, Bonita, and their family were very poor (there is power in poverty). A well-known fact in the church, but guess who, being in the “inner circle” knew of this most of all, me, the church secretary. This poor condition was not hidden. They would just be at a disadvantage during Y2K because they couldn’t collect as much. But the church would be there to help. I wasn’t the only one who felt guilty for this, and who ended up trying to help them out financially on top of my own required spending. Some people were thought to have more money than others and the subtle whispers were questions of why they didn’t give more. Those who did not seem to take the Y2K warnings as seriously as they should, were held in some suspicion as to whether they could be trusted in the end.

As encouraged and pressured, all year I gathered stuff from garage sales, thrift stores, stores going out of business or full-price if necessary, but I tried to use money wisely as I could. Along with the others in church who were most “devoted to the truth,” I gathered. At that table some times, we ordered large quantities of dried canned food from survival catalogs, sometimes pounds and pounds of hundreds of types of dried herbs so that medicine could be made from them when there was no medical care available. We collected clothing not only ahead for ourselves but for strangers in the future. As others did, I put back 55-gallon barrels of water, whole wheat, whole corn, kerosene, rye, etc. These were tucked secretly away in my barn and basement. In addition, boxes and boxes of pet food, canned food, odd school books, reams of paper, ink pens, an old rolling lawn mower, camping stoves, a non-electric clothes washer, cases of rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide for wounds, band aids galore, miscellaneous back, knee or other braces for potential injuries, books on survival, crank short-wave and regular radio. Cases of condoms for bartering purposes, and the list goes on and on. However, it could never be enough. I didn’t study enough about fleeing to the mountains or how to purify water. I did what I was supposed to do. I did not enjoy it. I hated it. In the back of my mind, if I could have listened to myself then, I knew that one literally needs very, very little to actually survive. Why did I need ALL this stuff? I felt strangled and smothered in the stuff. I was becoming a hoarder–being made a hoarder, rather.

I didn’t want the stuff. It represented fear of the future. It represented my loss of dreams, hopes, and desire for a life. Loneliness. Despair. It was dark and terrible.

Now that we had all these stores like we were supposed to, we had to protect them. Guns became important. I have never liked guns. They stood for death and fear. Getting a gun became my next necessity for obedience. Someone got it for me and when I took it from their hands and took it home, I hid it away and tried to never think of it again. Another thing I didn’t want. Gas Masks were also recommended. I didn’t go that far. That was the ultimate symbol of horror.

As a child in bed at night when it was dark, I would think about how if we couldn’t buy and sell without the Mark of the Beast, how we would run out of things and then what would we do? How we would have to hide from the World outside, would be tortured and raped, persecuted and die. Now, the sermons and conversations were warnings about preparing for Marshal Law, for militia to take over, for roving bandits and evil people breaking into our homes to steal our stuff, to suffer from no medical care, to starve, for rampant crime, looted stores with empty shelves, to worry what would happen to our children, to look for events like the Holocaust, to make meeting places in case our families were separated, planes falling out of the sky. I sold the water bed that I liked so much because the heat helped my Fibromyalgia because what good would the water bed be with no electricity. We wouldn’t be safe. We’d always be in fear.

I didn’t want to be afraid. I’d been afraid for so long. I just wanted to live, be happy, be safe, be loved, and cared for. Not this. If people wanted my stuff so bad, they could have it. I didn’t care. Just let me not be afraid anymore. Of course, I couldn’t even entertain these thoughts to myself because that would have been to question God and the church.

Although Grant helped in some ways, he felt none of the terror I felt or the responsibility of it. It was more like, “Well, if that’s what you want to do, whatever.” It wasn’t his money and he really didn’t care about his future that much. He just went along. I don’t think he had any sense of my fears at the time. However, Violet was around thirteen years old and heard what was being taught at church. She couldn’t totally know the fears my past added, but I know she was scared and lived in dread. I so wish that I could have saved her from that. No child should be put in that position as I should not have been either. I know she lives with it today as do I. It was a very dark, dark year among all the shadowed ones before and after it.

As Christmas of 1999 approached, how were any of us supposed to act excited about it? There was nothing to celebrate. Only the dread that once Christmas came, New Year’s was waiting right behind it like a monster wielding a chainsaw on the other side of New Year’s Eve’s door. It was not a time you wanted to look like you used money frivolously or on non-essential things so even Christmas gifts reflected survival that year. In an attempt at humor, I remember that I found at a garage sale a can of “condensed water,” I think it was, i.e. the can was empty.

However, Christmas did come and go and so did New Year’s Eve. That night services were held at church, but, of all nights, I was very sick. Grant and Violet went on church. I was scared to death to have to stay home alone not knowing what would happen at midnight. It was torture as the minutes ticked closer.

As everyone now knows, NOTHING HAPPENED. Y2K came and nothing happened. Next Sunday, at church, it was noted that it was good that nothing happened, but what we had done in prepping was good because the End would still come even if it wasn’t that night. That was it. It was over and it really wouldn’t be talked about again. No explanations. What had happened? What did God have to say for himself? The “man of God?” Well, he wasn’t wrong because the End would someday come. Until then, we simply were to know we were prepared and go on like nothing wrong happened.

I can’t exactly tell you how I felt after that day. Perhaps like the wind had been knocked out of me? Anger? No, because I wasn’t allowed those feelings. Where were the answers? There wouldn’t be any. If I now put an image to it, I picture myself standing that Sunday dazed in shock, my mouth hanging open. Nothing happened on Y2K in 1999/2000. How wrong that is Everything happened that year. I had to make an absolutely horrifying decision to go back into fears I should never have. I had to make decisions and face situations alone that I should not have had to do. I lived in constant fear for my future, my daughter, my family. I aged in fear. I allowed my daughter to live in the fear. That year was one year of my life. Life is short. I can’t get that year back. And I couldn’t get the money for the house back either or what it stood for. They were taken and are gone forever. And if I could never tell about what happened to the money, it was even worse when nothing happened. How could I ever explain that? I couldn’t. It just became one more secret in the sickness of what was happening. Those years and especially about the Y2K year, I have basically never told anyone. It has taken almost twenty years. And, even this week on the verge of 2019, as I contemplated making this one more trip back into that particular moment of darkness, it shook me to the core. The fears of those days and standing at that door all came back. However, I refuse to let it control me now so I gathered all the courage I could muster, and I choose to tell my story. I want it to help someone else. I paid dearly, but I escaped and I refuse to live in that kind of fear anymore of my life.

What happened to all that stuff? Well, some of it could be eaten up and used, and I did over time. However, so much was of little use in the normal scheme of life. Since we weren’t starving, what was I to do with barrels of whole wheat kernels? With massive quantities of kerosene? Besides if I’d have tried to give it to someone (not that I knew anyone), I’d have had to explain. Before we moved out of that house we were in at the time, the sewer backed up in the basement and ruined much of what was stored down there. It was terrible trying to move the remaining piles of stuff to the next house. It couldn’t be left. And the world would still end eventually so we were obligated to it. When I escaped, most of it was left behind, not worth eating or good tasting. Only gotten in the first place with the mind set that anything would taste good if one is starving. So my dreams ultimately expired, molded, rotted, or was abandoned. What a tragedy! I’m haunted by that to this day.

So like I said you can’t appreciate the present without knowing the past. I treasure and am unbelievable grateful for the freedom and ability to Live that I have accomplished since my escape. I’ve had to fight for my life. I have seen a meme once that said, How did you do it? And the answer is, Because I didn’t have a choice. I used to tell people in those years that if someone ever said at my funeral that “I loved life,” I’d come back to haunt them. Now, I can say, Life isn’t easy, it’s hard work, it has all kinds of ups and downs, but I do love my life now. I like who I am now. Freedom is worth fighting for. I know.

Hi we've been with USAA for over 10 yrs now for our Auto/Recreation insurance company. This month on our bill i noticed our rates went up by 35+ dollars per month.
