This is probably my last post on the whole “Liz is dead” situation but I want to talk about my great grandmother, who is currently 92 years old. When I was growing up, hell even now, she’d tell me a lot about her own stories, mostly about how terrifying life was under both the British Raj and Nizam rule (her side of my family is from Hyderabad - Google the Nizams and the Razakars if you’ve never heard about them, that’s a whole other thing of its own).

Something I remember very clearly is her telling me about this one song she was forced to sing in her school - she went to a Christian convent school - and the song was about the greatness of “George Prabhu and Mary Rani,” aka George V, Elizabeth II’s grandfather. Recently my mom was able to film her singing this song so that we could listen to the lyrics, which are originally in Telugu, and roughly translated it means “we’re singing in honor of George and Mary, who are the rulers of India and have brought great fortune to India, and we see them as our father and mother.”

This is just a really difficult reminder that when we’re talking about why Elizabeth II and the royal family don’t deserve our respect or condolences, many of us have very personal stories that run deep through our families. “But she was a mother, a grandmother, a person” and I don’t care because she and her family were in the business of dehumanizing and erasing the identities of millions of other mothers, other grandmothers, other PEOPLE. Why else would my great grandmother be forced to sing a song in their honor? “But she wasn’t responsible for India” fair enough, her darling grandfather had a great time doing that, but how about you go and talk to Kenya? Or anyone in Africa? Or the Caribbean? I’m sick and tired of being told to “not speak ill of the dead” when REALLY I and millions of others should be getting an apology from anyone who wants to “praise her legacy” and talk about how “revolutionary” she was.

hey hey so i saw your post about sirius accents and class and accents/sociolinguistics (particularly in the uk) have literally been one of my biggest interests since forever, and i totally get what you're saying, it is natural to adopt ways of speaking from the people you're closest with and there is deffo an aspect of that in the way i headcanon sirius' way of speaking. however... even if sirius isn't machiavelli planning out whether or not to pronounce an 'h', it is a really well documented phenomenon of people (particularly those of the middle class in the uk) switching up their accent nearly unconsciously in function w/what they are trying to project.

to say that sirius is in the wrong for adopting "working class" speech is totally not it, totally incorrect. but i don't think that's what people are saying? idk maybe i've just not come across them, but what i've seen is people pointing out areas where sirius might unconsciously reinforce/benefit from classism thru his speech.

i really really do not want to come off as condescending, but classism in the uk as it manifests thru accents is something really hard to understand coming from a north american perspective, which i know because i thought i understood after reading about it for years and then i went the uk and realised i didn't know shit, so even if it comes off as people villianising sirius i really don't think that is the case, i think it's just a really complicated issue!

I am not anglophone at all. I learnt English in school. So, I am not attempting to be the expert on accentism in any anglophone context. I think I learnt a little through reading, but I am also aware that that won't come close to the lived experience of people in the anglophone context. I maybe should have put this as a disclaimer on my post, so it doesn't stand as an absolute.

And with my outsider perspective, I am trying to envision Sirius inside the spectrum of accents the uk provides. I personally do not see Sirius as a person who forcefully tries to disconnects himself from rp to appear 'cooler', which is mostly how I have seen his adopting of different speech patterns seen interpreted, by the pov character in question. Which I also absolutely think is a thing many people who were raised with rp do (I just can't see Sirius do it just to appear more fun).

My perspective on Sirius though, is, that he is someone who is very well aware of his socio-economic position. He would adopt some speech patterns naturally, bc that's just how languages, and having friends works.

But I personally also like to play with aus in which Sirius doesn't have the security net of the potters, and his uncles inheritance. And I then wonder how someone who was raised with rp would navigate a situation like that. Of course, his rp will give him advantages in most fields - from getting a bank account, to getting a place to stay.

But imagining him having to navigate a society in which he would be as bad off as many others, trying to get friends, and then get those people to trust him, as a disinherited heir to an empire, is still interesting to me. Maybe especially bc I know so little about all of this.

And still, I usually see [Remus] uncomfortable that sirius, who is only ever well off, would forcibly adopt speeking patterns. Idk I was just thinking about it

33. What’s one skill that you’d like to try and learn for fun?

I actually have a whole bucketlist of stuff I'd love to learn/try! I'm one of those ppl who latches on to a new dream hobby like every month and the only thing stopping me is lack of funds/time/available classes lmao

A big one I've had since childhood though is woodworking! I used to have a little plastic playset I loved as a small child with fake planks of different sizes with holes and screws to build things, then when I got older and kinda forgot about it M/ose from N/ed's Dec/lassified reawakened my interest and was kind of an 'Oh wow girls can legit do that, it's not just a gruff man thing? And it's pretty cool?'.

Unfortunately I'm complete dogshit at measuring anything bc judging size in relation and amounts of items is hard for me. Like, had the best teacher ever for a light shop/engineering class in middle school who tried to take me under his wing as much as he could and he still couldn't save my projects from being completely out-of-scale, not-working disasters. Also I'm terrified of being around saws of any kind.

I love seeing the stuff the guy who played R/on Swa/nson makes, like on his crafting reality show with Amy? Everyone he talks about it in detail I'm like, yes please educate us let me live vicariously through you.

I'm sure I'd do a lot better with the more freehand creative type stuff though, like whittling things with one of those knives. You can kind of eyeball that, no measuring required really and you have a lot more control over what you're doing/how much pressure you're adding. That was also lowkey awakened by tv (Dr/ake and Jo/sh, when the guy makes a duck out of the soap bar). I make fun of Leonard's stupid wooden ducks but I would unironically love doing stuff like that. Idk what I would do with all the little figurines and carved sticks but... I wanna carve things.

I'm very wary of cutting myself up doing it unsupervised though, so I'd rather not attempt it unless I could take a beginner's class or something first. Or get the proper supplies.

What. the . fuck. I WAS NOTHING BUT LOYAL WHEN WE WERE TOGETHER AND UNLESS I WAS IN CLASSES OR WORKING WE WERE TOGETHER!! I actually have never spent so much time with one person (and didn’t even mind it) before or after him. He knows I never cheated on him smfh he hurled this same accusation back in the winter after I started hooking up with someone again. So I don’t really get why he’s even acting like this is brand new information because the inciting incident for me to cut him off completely a few months ago was how he was handling me hooking up with someone. Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to tbh??

Also if it wasn’t for pandemic or if he was IN LA as a single man, I’m sure he would’ve ended up with at least someone ?? Yeah he’s not a hookup kinda guy but if he was taking the same drgz but Im not there than Im sure he’d have plenty of bodies, he’s objectively gorgeous to the point that people are wild confused by his personality & mannerisms.

ALSO we’ve been broken up technically since the fall!! I’ve hooked up with TWO people, which is my prerogative?? I could hookup with a ton of people and it would still be well within my rights as in no way are he and I together ?? It doesn’t mean I don’t care or love him at all but it’s literally mid- May?? I get that he’s mainly upset that the person I most recently was with is the guy from Feb. What I didn’t count on or realize was that I had given J enough info that combined with his naturally sharp memory he’d piece together that the Feb/recent guy is the last person I was in love with before the relationship w J. Once he figured that out he was pressing for more info but I never give out names from situations anyways & I actually had to aggressively ask him if he enjoyed being hurt or something because there’s no reason he needs to fixate on this ??

Ok he started off yelling (for him) there but once it was just crying i got that his abandonment issues are triggered & that’s definitely valid but he can’t guilt me into coming out to Oakland & based off the past couple days he is not in a place that I can trust myself around. We’d definitely end up fucking & probably doing drgz & there would be no closure we’d just have intense /cinematic experiences that will make separation that much harder AGAIN. We can bring out the best in one another but we also bring out the absolute worst!! We can’t forget the truly fucking horrible parts of our relationship and how out of control it was. Love is not enough!!! The way we loved one another was all consuming & that doesn’t work when there’s soooo much individual healing+ growth that needs to happen.

of course i still love him as well , but i can’t even remind him of that as it’ll then be “so you’ll come back?” fuck like people can love people and know not to be with them!! if i was in a better place maybe i’d think about it; but i’m so far from where I need to be. ofc I miss a lot about him and the relationship but it’s more detrimental than it is beneficial!! it’s not like he didn’t have his grievances too he just doesn’t keep them in perspective in this type of situation . like yeah we coexisted extraordinarily well & never had little arguments over dumb shit/ needed a break from one another; but when we would fight it would be a massive aggressive blowout. ok great we didn’t find one another annoying but also we were respectively v fucking triggered by some deep rooted behavior (i.e our respective parents +trust issues, ptsd and psychosis manifested completely differently; bc of our constant proximity to one another - my BP was on full display multiple times; i accepted he was set on carrying but it was ultimately more like stockpiling ; we both at times did reckless things which made us obsess over the other’s safety [mine mainly in mixed or manic states] ; different attitudes/approaches to drgz) . the codependency was in some lights eventually p unhealthy , especially as eventually down the road itd be impossible to accommodate that degree of attachment to one another!!

ok in some way it’s romantic or w/e that we literally couldn’t be w/o one another at night but also we made it way harder on ourselves when we’d focus on making sure we could be with the other at their obligation instead of our respective responsibilities(i.e me always in LA with him, he ended up coming overseas 3x (EU&Middle East) when I was there for work/conference( for countries he wouldn’t be able to get into he waited at w/e neighboring one would be safe for him), based his UK work trip around my exams schedule so he could bring me, brought me to PFW, etc. ) even considering taking space at any point was never a real conversation.. we were genuinely best friends but just bounced back from w/e dysfunctional argument we had vs solving it and we’re both mad paranoid people & we need someone to physically be there to feel reassured;on the surface and in actuality in some ways the dynamic was ideal- (regardless tho having someone be your primary safety is hardly fail-safe ).

Both of us are insomniacs & deal w night terrors; but from v. early on we figured out how to handle these things in each other to the point that both of us stopped our respective nighttime vices & could sleep naturally; in the case of night terrors the other person would soothe them back. His overwhelming need to protect found a match with my overwhelming longing for safety even before we knew a ton about one another&the respective back stories. Because of Chantel Miller’s assault case that had gone viral(re:the SU Swimmer case) years before, J was convince su at night was dangerous & always picked me up+ put pepper spray canister in my bag literally a week after we first met. When he learned my history/some of the traumas (mainly nyc r**** & parts i shared re:tr********* abroad) etc he was especially ode about my overall safety. (Tbf he has seen a lot in his life but he mistook my taking risks at times as being completely oblivious when most of the times it was because I had assessed the situation and compared to other experiences and I knew I could handle it; ofc for some of the episodic instances it was way more precarious of a situation. )When it was clear that it wasn’t just some over controlling maneuver, it was just easier to try and listen to him about which areas and times to avoid tbh& spared the details of my ~pickups~. He didn’t need protection in the same way; besides the support/‘protection’ for LA/industry stuff, he needed emotional support/validation, reassurance, and to be nurtured & encouraged.

...We’re missing something

- ‘Separation’, W. S. Merwin

These thoughts started as a couple of tweets, and grew. They are not fully formed but I am profoundly discomforted by the ways in which the dead are (or are not) being talked about in all our leaders’ plans and public discourses about roadmaps ‘out’ of this crisis, and the (unstated) implications of their absence. So here are some rough, ill-formed thoughts for now.

I’ve been trying to work (as we all are), at home, while simultaneously checking in on friends and family, building new, smaller routines. I’ve been trying to stay away from commenting on the current context, because who has words right now? Yet I haven’t been able to get a question out of my head; its been floating around, running across the tip of my tongue, looking for an answer. Who will mourn the dead? Or, perhaps, why won’t we mourn the dead?

The death toll globally, now in the hundreds of thousands, continues to rise. Yet I am struck by the absence of mourning. On my twitter timeline I scroll past tweets announcing the deaths of family members—‘My brilliant dad died of COIVD this morning’… ‘My grandma succumbed, we couldn’t be there’… ‘Here is a photo of my mother before I was born, she’s gone and I miss her so much’… But still, this mourning, these stories are small, personal, isolated. Swallowed up in the noise of my twitter timeline. Photos circulate of middle-of-the-night army convoys in northern Italy carrying the immense volume of dead to neighbouring morgues, aerial shots of mass graves on Hart’s Island in New York, thousands of families collecting funerary urns in China. The dead are present. And yet they are not. So, I have to ask, why are we not mourning collectively? Where is the shared grief? The commemoration of names, and lives, and stories?

Commemoration can be jingoistic, and nationalistic; it can be perverted for political ends. Yet commemoration also holds us together, pierces our self obsession, recognises something bigger is going on.

When the towers collapsed in New York in 2001 you couldn’t escape the smiling holiday snaps of victims, hour-long specials about their lives and their deaths. When MH17 crashed, Victoria’s largest church filled with mourners. Is this crisis too large? Are we too separated? Or is it easier not to confront the reality when the future is so uncertain.

Shut in our houses the news drones about economic recovery, measuring the dead in the same graphic images, numbers soaring up in inverse to the plummet of the stock market. But there are no people in these stories. They are numbers, and the tallying obscures the fleshy reality of what is being counted.

Reflecting on the American war story and repatriation of the dead, Kandida Purnell argues that ‘national binding in grief’ can only happen if together bodies feel an intensification of emotion (2018, 159). I don’t want to compare the dead from COVID to war dead—for many reasons, some beautifully laid out by Cynthia Enloe—but Purnell’s work on war dead demonstrates the impetus in seeing and speaking of the dead can provide towards collective commemoration and accounting.

Judith Butler notes that ‘many people think grief is privatised’ and depoliticised, but Butler argues that ‘it furnishes a sense of political community of a complex order, and it does this first of all by bringing to the fore the relational ties that have implications for theorizing fundamental dependency and ethical responsibility’ (2004: 22). It brings attention to the ‘we’, the relational, collective constitution of our human condition.

An absence of grief, a lack of mourning, means those relational ties are not felt, they are not made present. How different might people’s behaviours be, under lockdown and as lockdowns lift, if they felt not selfish frustration at being confined to home, but if confinement was understood as a relational act of solidarity motivated by engaging in and with grieving and memorialisation of those who have died because of this virus? An act of conscious care.

Sara Ahmed (2004) argues that stories of pain must be heard for people to be moved by others’ suffering. There is an absence of these stories in mainstream outlets, although they circulate on twitter. How might we be moved if we allowed ourselves to sit with others’ pain? What does it mean that we are so interested in getting back to the pub, to visit mum for Mothers day, to celebrate the outcome of another enormous loss of life with VE day celebrations in the UK for example, that we don’t think about the potential deaths caused by our actions?

When lockdowns lift before the curve has flattened, it is a signal that some lives matter less than others; this is invisible and unstated but present. Again, in the realm of war, Maja Zehfuss points to the particular position of soldiers “whose lives are grievable [as per Butler] and yet put at risk in order, apparently, to protect other lives” (2009: 419). Again, healthcare workers, school teachers, public transport drivers, cleaners, are not soldiers (and it speaks to the paucity of our analyses that it is in war we look for these sacrifices and not in everyday life, and I’m reflecting too, on my own vocabulary in looking for spaces to speak of grief). Yet if you call them frontline workers, the battlefield is invoked, and their risk is rendered intelligible—to protect others. On twitter, I saw someone observe that when we talk about going back to ‘normal’ we are talking about low-paid workers working to allow others to stay home, but with more comforts. The politics of this disease and its violence—as others have noted—is racialised, gendered, and classed (and globally differentiated ). More war analogies: who are we willing to sacrifice?

I don’t want to re-appropriate Butler’s conception of ‘grievable life’ entirely out of the context/s in which she presents it (replete with the complexities of uneven global power relations, and a persistent imperial gaze), however, the idea of grievability is profoundly valuable here, because to be able to grieve a death, according to Butler, you have to be able to imagine it as a life that should have been lived, and that requires a recognition of the fundamental sociality of our lives, and our bodies.

“But if we are social beings and our survival depends upon a recognition of interdependency…then it is not as an isolated and bounded being that I survive, but as one whose boundary exposes me to others in ways that are voluntary and involuntary (sometimes at once), an exposure that is the condition of sociality and survival alike” (2010: 54).

I’m not sure I’m saying that those who have died from COVID19 are ungrievable lives, but their deaths are being rendered invisible, unmarked, except in exponential log-graphs. If they can’t be conceived of, they can’t be mourned. In whose interest is it that we do not mourn; in whose interest is it that we lose sight of the social constitution of ourselves?

In this ‘easing restrictions’ and ‘lifting stay home orders’ can be justified in terms of the economy and ‘returning to normal’, ignoring the cost at which this will come. Because some lives are more grievable than others. In places in recent weeks this differentiated value of life is explicit. News outlets and ‘journalists’ make this claim explicitly. Others justify their lockdown-violating/bending behaviour because they are not in a ‘risk’ group, implicitly and explicitly at times, arguing that those with risks and vulnerabilities are worth less, that their deaths would be acceptable if others could ‘return’ to normal life. I don’t know even where to start in trying to convince people they should care about others.

Those who have died are not the ‘glorious’ dead of a foreign war, but rather the shameful dead whose deaths highlight the failings of the political class to act quickly enough, or out of anything other than self preservation. Lack of mourning is not passive, but predicated on active choices. Deaths are hidden, obfuscated, non- or mis- counted. Ungrievable deaths are not just unmarked, but are ‘unmarkable’. They ‘disappear into the ellipses by which public discourse proceeds’ (Butler, 2004, 35). And the public discourse reifies capitalist production that values labour over lives. It doesn’t have to be like this. As Arundhati Roy described, in a much shared piece last month, the pandemic is a portal, a gateway. We can imagine a different world. But to do so we have to make visible the deliberate strategies that try and justify and minimise the deaths of loved ones, near and far.

Roxani Krystalli, in a beautiful tiny letter last year reflecting on the burning of Notre Dame, the attacks in Sri Lanka, and noticing birdsong, called for us to ‘ask questions of our empathy and its failures’. An attentiveness to absences that would serve us well in the current context where so much of the suffering is occurring behind walls and doors and bodies.

Early in the lockdowns an text-image circulated on social media (I cannot find it again as I go to type this, thanks to the ephemerality of Instagram and twitter - EDIT, I found it, thanks to brilliant friend India Allender, posted below) naming the empty streets not as something to fear but as representative of a radical act of love. It is out of love for others—for those we know, and those we do not—that we remove ourselves from public places, restrict our movements. This is the shared vulnerability, the fundamental sociality of our embodied selves, that Butler talks about.

Yet as we move in public and private discourse from ‘we’ statements to ‘I’ statements—I want to go out, I want to see my friends, I am not high risk—we lose sight of that collectivity, and the emotional resonance, as Purnell argues, required for collective commemoration, dissipates. This violent teleological drive to reopen society is predicated on a refusal to acknowledge the loss we’ve all suffered, collectively.

Perhaps a concerted efforts to see the dead, to mourn them, is an ethical responsibility as Butler notes, and it allows a reclaiming of that collective space, a willingness to stay apart, stay home, until we can all be safe.

How many works in progress do you currently have in progress? “Just” three - Princess and the Goblin AU, a personal project, and an original work about the world’s grumpiest immortal old lady 2. Recipe for classic fig rolls (aka fig newtons), but made with wholemeal spelt flour. The fig paste is lightly spiced and gently sweetened and the pastry casing is delicious in its own right with subtle notes of lemon. These biscuits are easier to make than you might think.

Fig rolls are one of those biscuits that divide opinion. They have a Marmite, love them or hate them quality. Needless to say I’m in the appreciative camp. So, I was delighted that Paul Hollywood chose these childhood treats for the technical challenge on Great British Bake Off last week. I was surprised he chose such an easy challenge, but I’m not complaining. Finally, it gave me the oomph required to bake these delicious cookies. They have been on my must try list for years.

Great British Bake Off

Every year I try and make something from the current series of the Great British Bake Off. Last year I made a spinach and lemon cake for #CakeWeek. It was my super simple version of Le Gâteau Vert and most delicious it was too. Amongst other recipes, I’ve also made chocolate Viennese whirls, triple chocolate bread and Black Forest gâteau. This year it was the fig rolls in #BiscuitWeek that grabbed my attention.

But it’s #BreadWeek tonight, so who knows, I might be inspired all over again.

Fig Rolls

Fig rolls are a classic British biscuit – or so I thought. Turns out, they originated in ancient Egypt. The commercial variety that we know and sometimes love were first produced in 1891 by Charles Roser from Philadelphia in the United States. He patented the automated process which was almost immediately bought by the Kennedy Biscuit Company. Fig rolls are known as fig newtons in the States, so called as the factory that made them was in Newton, Massachusetts. I can’t find out when the fig roll came to the UK, but suffice to say, it’s been around for quite a long time.

There is some dispute as to whether fig rolls are a cake or a biscuit. I think this might be because fig newton casings are softer and more cake like, whilst ours are crumbly and more biscuit like. But in the UK, fig paste is encased in an enriched sweet pastry and chopped into small flattened rectangles. This makes it a biscuit in my book. Plus you’ll find them in the biscuit aisle in shops and supermarkets not the cake aisle.

My mother was quite strict when it came to sweet treats. Well, apart from her famous puddings. She certainly didn’t believe in buying biscuits anyway. My introduction to fig rolls came when I first went to stay with a friend of my mother’s at the age of seven. She lived on a remote Cornish smallholding which you could only reach by tractor or by walking a mile down a steep and sometimes treacherous path. She didn’t have a tractor, so walking it was.

The house had no electricity and in those early days, no running water either. I used to love staying there, it always felt like a real adventure. Down to the well to collect water and to bed by candlelight. Anyway, once a week, a grocery van used to stop at the top of the aforementioned path just so she could catch up on supplies. And one of those supplies was always a packet of fig rolls.

Many’s the time we made that journey across the river and up the track. We had to cross an old rickety wooden bridge and I always wondered if I’d make it safely across before it collapsed into the turgid water below. But it was always worth it. Those fig rolls were such a treat.

Wholemeal Spelt Fig Rolls

I found lots of recipes for fig rolls, both online and in some of my baking books. But in the end I based mine on the Paul Hollywood recipe that the bakers used on #GBBO. His was simpler than most, used less sugar and seemed more like the “real” thing. Obviously I changed it somewhat. I added a few extra spices, changed the method to make it easier and used wholemeal spelt flour for my pastry casing. Oh, and I swapped Paul’s vanilla for lemon zest in the biscuit dough.

Fig Paste Filling

The fig filling is really easy to make. It’s just a question of bunging all of the ingredients into a pan, then simmering them and blitzing. It’s best to do this bit first so the fig paste can cool and firm up whilst you’re getting on with making the pastry.

I didn’t have any stem ginger, so I used some crystallised ginger as I always have a jar of that to hand. Although I adore cinnamon, I thought the quantity Paul used might overpower the other flavours, so I used less of this and added a pinch of ground cloves and a grating of nutmeg instead.

Making the Biscuit Dough

Although the dough casing is more like pastry than a snappy biscuit, it’s made using the creaming method rather than the rubbing in one. It’s very straightforward. I just use a bowl and wooden spoon for this, but you can use a handheld or stand mixer if you prefer.

When it came to rolling the pastry out, I found I made a larger rectangle than the one Paul stipulated in his recipe. Perhaps this is why I made sixteen fig rolls rather than only twelve. In order to make a neat (ish) rectangle I cut ragged bits off the edges and pressed them into the sides which weren’t quite wide enough. The dough is quite malleable, so this wasn’t difficult. I wasn’t going to waste any of it, that’s for sure.

Form the dough into a ball with your hands.

Roll pastry dough out into a rectangle, then cut in half down the long side.

Filling the Fig Rolls

This was the bit, I felt, where it could all go hideously wrong. But it didn’t. It was all a lot easier than I was expecting. The wholemeal spelt pastry cracks quite easily, so don’t expect your fig rolls to look perfectly smooth. Mine certainly weren’t. But then I like a homemade look.

I baked mine for fifteen minutes as I wanted to ensure the biscuit dough was properly cooked. Plus I wanted them to look properly golden. But if you prefer a paler fig roll, try baking for twelve minutes instead.

Spoon the fig paste along the middle of the two sides of pastry and form into a sausage shape.

Bring the two sides of pastry together and seal with your fingers along the middle. Turn the rolls over so the seem side is facing down.

Cut each roll into eight equal pieces.

Place pieces on a baking tray, spaced a little apart. Flatten each one with a fork, marking along the length with the prongs as you go.

Finished Fig Rolls

Once baked, the fig rolls just need to cool, then they can be eaten or stored in a tin until needed. They’ll last a few days, but the pastry gets steadily softer as the days go on. Having said that, this batch lasted five days and the biscuit dough held together just fine. I took one in to work with my packed lunch on day two and another on day four. They’re quite substantial, so I reckoned one was enough. As for the rest, CT and I polished the lot off at home.

I doubt Paul would have been impressed by the unevenness of my bakes, but I was delighted with the result. They tasted much as I remember them and CT thought so too. Only better, because they were homemade, healthier and bigger.

Homemade Fig Rolls. PIN IT.

Fig Rolls with Wholemeal Spelt Biscuit Pastry.

Fig Paste

200 g dried soft figs (Can use dried hard figs, but will need to cook them for longer.)

20 g crystalised ginger (Can substitue for a large ball of stem ginger in syrup.)

20 g muscovado sugar (I used dark muscovado.)

½ tsp ground cinnamon

pinch of ground cloves

grating of nutmeg

Biscuit Dough

60 g unsalted butter – softened

40 g light muscovado sugar

pinch of fine sea salt

½ lemon – zested (optional)

175 g wholemeal spelt flour

⅓ tsp baking powder

1 medium egg

Fig Paste

Place the figs in a small saucepan and add enough water to just cover them. Add the ginger and sugar.

Bring to the boil, then simmer, stirring occassionaly for about 8 minutes or until the figs are cooked through and the water has evaporated.

Add the dried spices and purée with a stick blender or mini food processor until you have a rough paste. Leave to cool and firm up.

Biscuit Dough

Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the salt and lemon zest and cream some more.

Beat in the egg.

Sift in the flour and baking powder and mix until it's mostly incorporated. Bring it all together with your hands to form a soft dough. If it's really soft, you may want to cover it and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to firm up. But you shouldn't need to do this.

Heat the oven to 200℃ (400℉, Gas 6).

On a floured surgace, roll out the dough to a rectangle measuring 21cm by 27cm. It should be about 4mm thick. Cut lenghtways into two strips measuring 10 1/2 cm by 27cm.

Spoon half of the fig mixture down the middle of one strip and the rest down the middle of the other strip. Neaten it up with your fingers, if needed.

Bring the two sides of each strip of pastry up to join in the middle and roughly crimp with your fingers to seal.

Turn the rolls over so the seem is at the bottom and cut each one into eight equal sized pieces.

Line a baking sheet with baking paper (or silicone mat) and gently transfer the rolls, placing a little apart. With a fork, press each one gently down to flatten it slightly and to add a pattern on the top.

Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Can keep for up to a week in a sealed container, though the pastry will soften.

Hi guys, i read the RS interview with Hazz and one part of it caught my attention, Harry does in fact look a lot like River Phoenix (Who was an Iconic young actor who sadly died due to overdose at the early age of 23 years)

So, ok let’s just see how alike they really are, I’ll give facts and make parallels between both of them as we go. I, in no way want to say that Harry is better than Phoenix or the opposite, They’re obviously different people in every aspect of their careers and lifes, don’t take this seriously. AAAAND english is not my first language so be KIND.

So... One of the reasons why i made this is bc H is 23 years old, the exact same age as River when he died.

River Phoenix died in October 31, 1993 coincidently just three months and two days later (93 days) Harry Styles was welcomed into this world.

Phoenix’ true passion was the music. He was a singer, songwriter, and an accomplished guitarist, he was determinate to be a musician that’s why his family moved to LA but Ironically his acting career is what really gave him immortality in Hollywood as an icon ofthen mentioned his ability to get inside his characters, he was so good that you forgot it was him and it was not real "He was obviously going to be a movie star," "It's something apart from acting ability”. The opposite to harry who was recognized since the beginning as a musician and later in his career he ventured to try acting, described as “remarkable ... a kind of panache. It’s a gift.”

Phoenix's parents named him after the river of life from the Hermann Hesse novel Siddhartha, and he received his middle name from the Beatles' song "Hey Jude". His childhood was sad and hard, He was raised in, a small suburb of Gainesville, where they lived in poverty. They lived in a "desperate situation." Phoenix often played guitar while he and his sister sang on street corners for money and food to support their ever-growing family he never attended formal school. He could read and write, and he had an appetite for it, but he had no deep roots into any kind of sense of history or literature.

In contrast, Harry was raised in a hard working class kind of family, Styles was born in Worcestershire but was raised in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire after his parents moved there along with his older sister, Gemma, when he was a child. He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School His parents divorced when he was seven and his mother later remarried, but his childhood was lived in a cared and quiet environment. As a sixteen-year-old he worked part-time at the W. Mandeville Bakery in Holmes Chapel. As a child, Styles loved singing, citing Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley and The Beatles as his influences.

Phoenix was a dedicated animal rights, environmental and political activist. He was a prominent spokesperson for PETA and won their Humanitarian Award in 1992 for his fund-raising efforts, He wrote an environmental awareness essay about Earth Day targeted at his young fanbase, which was printed in Seventeen magazine. He was a lifelong vegan.

Parallel to him, Harry supports Comic Relief, a charity that works to tackle poverty and social injustice. And he also grew and donated his own hair to the Little Princess Trust, a UK organization that gives free real hair wigs to young boys and girls who have lost their hair from cancer treatments. And He, just as Phoenix, loves our environment, He supports Greenpeace and has urged concertgoers to boycott the chain of aquatic theme parks SeaWorld, thanks to him young people turned against the idea of animals in captivity by saying "Don't go to SeaWorld"

He was also described by one writer as "the vegan James Dean," He was also referred to as "This century's James Dean and comparisons were made regarding the youth and sudden deaths of both actors.

And Harry styles is also recognized as consummated heartthrob, often described as “wide smile and sweet-yet-naughty demeanour” have made him a fan favourite, He is also compared to the legendary actor James Dean by TS(lol) bc he apparently has James Dean’s daydream look in his eyes. Note: I was invited to Domaine du Pignoulet for a 2 night pilates retreat and full board. I paid for travel and transport myself.

When I heard I was invited to a Pilates Retreat in Gascony in a restored country manor, I couldn’t believe it. It sounded right up my street. As long time readers will know, I love France, and this was in a part of the country I had never been to, and the word retreat conjured up all kinds of relaxation and quiet and peaceful scenarios in my mind. Even better, I was going with some of the lovely free from blogger gang of ladies, some of who I had met already and others who I was looking forward to meeting. This time ten days ago I was on a plane from London Luton to Toulouse. These girls became fast friends and not just because of the peace and beautiful surroundings of our country retreat. We put the world to rights over the few days we spent together and found we had lots more in common along with blogging about allergies and free from!

There’s a lot of talk these days about taking time out, ‘me time’ and making time for yourself. Especially as a mother, I find every second article you read online is telling you how you need to put yourself first once in a while and how happy Mum means happy kids. I think I do a pretty good balance of getting time for myself along with being a busy working Mum – I do a 90 minute yoga class each week and try to make it to gym or pool to exercise a couple of other times. As with everyone I’m sure, I let work and busy-ness and life overtake things and end up very stressed out. The retreat came at a great time for me, just after the kids went back to school and it was like stealing an extra 3 days of summer before embracing the autumn and darker days at home.

Peace

I don’t think I can put in words how relaxing Pignoulet is. Each of the 10 strong women on this retreat had different things going on, life challenges of all sorts, and 25 children between us, so getting away like this was a rare treat, and really couldn’t have been more perfect. The setting is just stunning. So quiet, so peaceful. In the middle of nowhere. Countryside all around. The only sounds are cocks crowing and the odd church bell.

The House

The house itself is fabulous, each room with unique characteristics and restored perfectly. I was obsessed with the shuttered windows and the pretty doors and the exposed rafters on the ceilings. Our hosts Susie and James made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The house has been in James’ family since 2000 and Susie and James bought it in 2016. They have since left their busy lives in the UK and settled there and offer the house for rental, B&B and pilates retreats.

There is a pristine outdoor pool in a beautiful garden with sun loungers by its side in the grass. We were extremely lucky with the September weather and we swam each day of the stay.

Food

All of our meals were prepared for us to the highest standard by Susie and James, noting all of our intolerances, allergies and dietary requirements, with no asking and checking over and over, just total inclusion. I’m lucky enough to have no allergies myself but I would have felt completely at ease having the boys there for meals. The food was local fresh produce, right down to figs from Pignoulet’s own fig trees. Stuffed peppers, bean salads, chicken stuffed with sundried tomatoes and basil and salmon wrapped in parma ham were some of my favourites. Full board included breakfast, lunch and 3 course dinner with local wines. In the afternoon there was cake put out by the kettle and you could have afternoon tea (or coffee) at any stage which was a lovely touch. The cakes were made allergen free also. Every little detail was thought of.

Pilates

It was years since I had done any kind of pilates. Susie is an amazing teacher and made everyone at ease from those who do pilates all the time to complete beginners like me. The class at 8am as the sun was coming up was my favourite. I would go back for this alone!

How to get there

Lourdes is the nearest airport, 40 minutes away. I couldn’t find any direct flights from Ireland to Lourdes but you can fly to Toulouse, Bordeaux or Biarritz, each about 2 hours drive to Domaine du Pignoulet. You will need to rent a car to get there as it is very rural. From the UK you can fly London Luton to Toulouse or Stansted to Lourdes.

Local Amenities

As we were on a retreat, most of our time was spent at Domaine du Pignoulet itself, but we did pop down to a local market in Beaumarche on the Sunday morning. The market was visually stunning with all sorts of bric a brac and local produce available. There is plenty of other activities available locally from cycling to golf, and even skiing in the winter months.

Other Options

The house has 6 twin bedrooms and can be rented in its entirety for self catering. This would be ideal for a family get away with grandparents, siblings and their children, there is plenty of room for a large family to holiday together. Bed and Breakfast Bed, Breakfast and Dinner or A pilates retreat including 2-3 classes per day.

Would I Go Back?

In a heartbeat! The other ladies are planning to return the same time next year and while I can’t make it those dates, I hope to return with either my family or friends another time.
