The king is dead and so are his brothers. On a night of blood and death, Princess Viarraluca finds herself the sole surviving heir of the floundering island city-state of Kel Fimmaril. In training to be her island’s next polemarch, or high-general, Viarra instead takes up her brother’s throne as her people’s warrior-queen and protector.

However, a conversation with a surrendering enemy officer presents Queen Viarra with the opportunity to become much more than just the petty queen of a small island city. Will she save not only her own people but the people of a large but struggling hegemony in desperate need of strong leadership? Or will her maneuvering and machinations draw the attention and ire of powerful political rivals, unhappy with the presence of a new player in their dangerous game of geopolitics?

The First Empress is a 114,000-word novel based on my studies of Classical Greek history. The story is an adult Iron-Age period-fantasy that explores ancient-world politics, culture, warfare, and sexuality, including a mostly bisexual primary culture and a lesbian leading couple. The story and characters are inspired by my studies of ancient history and figures like Queen Zenobia of Palmyra, King Philip II of Macedon, and his son Alexander the Great, among many others.

I need suggestion! Stories about kids who went to magic schools. Yes, I know, Harry Potter, I have the whole collection from before Rowling proved herself a transphobe and cancelled herself.

It's a novel writing project, and I need several examples of the story type to study. Books are better, but I'll also take tv, movie and anime suggestions. I can easily study those too.

Blue Exorcist and Soul Eater could count, but I'd prefer examples with more ordinary protagonists.

Ps. Suggestions don't have to be only modern stories. Anything goes.

Yo!

There's been an increase in my inactivity in the sim community, and that's because I'm not home. While visiting family, I learned my place of living suffered a lot of water damage and is not salvageable. It's a blow for sure, but I'll be able to better handle the situation when I'm home, which I hope will be within this month.

I'm determined to finish S2BO this year and work on several tutorials.

What I have accomplished is launching pre-orders for my Peter Pan retelling, Don't Worry Wendy. It will publish May 14, 2024. If you can't wait that long, I will roll out Kindle Vella drops starting March 5th.

My 7th Novel is OUT zomg!

In this sequel to To Hive and To Hold, we check back in with Arthur and Jade, meet some new friends, make some new magic, and watch a new romance catch fire.

Arthur: witch, apothecarist, tea-maker, and teacher. Jade: sorcerer, tattooist, and Arthur’s non-binary lover. Basil Vasan-Everleigh: part fae, part human, and entirely overlooked by his sorcerer family. Rixt: dragon, patron, and a man of exquisite taste.

Dragons have a bone to pick with the sorcerers, and both parties require impartial negotiators. Arthur and Jade agree to speak on the dragons' behalf, and Basil's father volunteers him to speak for the sorcerers.

Arthur gets new clients for tea, new vendors for magical plants and ingredients, and Basil gets a whole new world that appreciates him for who he is. Rixt gets more than he bargained for, Jade gets to see his former enemies get what they deserve, and our heroes get a whole lot of happily ever after.

Foolish strategy

“Highness, should we nae just kill [the enemy] wounded?” a noble warrior from one of the allied tribes asked as the other warriors hurried to gather wounded and prisoners. “Wounded foes who are nae gonna be sold or ransomed will just come back tae fight when they recover.”

“Nae, that’s a foolish strategy,” Lutaxa disagreed, helping the wounded shield-maid she’d been bandaging get settled on a stretcher made from two spears and a tunic. “[We'll leave them behind because] Grandfather taught that dead warriors dinnae eat any of the enemy’s food or use up any of their supplies. Wounded warriors eat as much as healthy warriors, use up their medicine and other supplies, and take up space in their supply wagons. All of this adds up tae slow down enemy armies.”
