If you have not read The Stranding (and by extension, The Rescue) by the darling @belethlegwen you are deeply missing out! The sheer amount of content is truly a blessing, and considering its still being updated?? ASDFJHSLK
Belle is an incredible story teller, and this shines through in her writing so well I feel like I'm getting flashbanged by talent.
You know that typical writing advice about not introducing too many characters, especially early on as it divides the reader's attention?? BELLE STOMPS ON THAT.
AND
IT
WORKS
I genuinely can't get over how much I am in love with her characters. I must admit- I am the typical reader with one too many bonks to the head that can't seem to focus on/ remember/ care about more than 3-5 characters- that is not the case here.
Every character she introduces has my interest piqued- each one feeling alive and at home in their setting. And its not just likeable in the sense of "oh I'd be friends with them" (and she absolutely has many characters I'd love to be friends with)- its these raw and real characterizations that make you like them as a character.
They have their own mystery to them too- even if its not direct. Her characters make you wonder more about their past and why they act the way they do. They can be frustrating, immature, stubborn, even cruel- but they feel so deeply real.
Both written works from Sizeable Ship Wrecks are among my favorite things I've read- both inside and outside of the G/t sphere to the point I feel as though I could shamelessly recommend this to someone outside of the G/t community and be confident they would enjoy it.
haoyu zhang; 26, he/him, chinese-canadian, ex-military, estranged yet protective of sister daiyu, lived in a terrible little apartment with a terrible little car, picked up shifts at loong wah restaurant in st. john’s, very much over attollo's bullshit <3
appearance; 5’5, buff, heavily tattooed (prominent tiger on back, script along ribs, roses along left arm, other small pieces intermingled), buzzcut growing out, ears pierced but no jewellery worn, zero effort wardrobe, function over flair, ragged fingernails, permanent dark circles, rbf
personality; good heart, bad temper, anger issues, relapsed smoker, stoic, blunt, strong-willed, terrible liar, ruthless, determined, focused, intimidation ruined by height, destroys punching bags for fun, lingering ptsd, chronic rooftop seeker, decent cook, always tired, previously troubled teen, issues with authority and government from military past, not easily flustered but once it happens he crumbles
relationships; clicks with pariah but that might just be because of the motorcycle, chill and somewhat distrustful of vasilisia, doesn’t care about operator (literally probably just forgot about him), currently wants to return the favour and go after dreamwalker, intimidated by sysba but tries to cover it by being an asshole (it doesn't work), wary of suha but wants to trust her, won over gasper despite forcibly stifling the urge to knock his teeth out, reluctant besties with deadlock, banters and butts heads with helios, freaked out by prince but also like... das fishey, broke voltaic’s nose, immediately hated markos
ro; perhaps a fluid nb!/m!sysba or dreamwalker or poly but all with the specific progression of purely physical > it's complicated > physical and emotional. he flirted with sysba to get their guard down but it was so bad and cringe he doesn't know what he's doing i'm endeared i want to study him under a microscope. dude is so duty oriented tho idk. could be painful hehe.
I feel like if 2000 years have passed since the first war against the Bugnarok, there has to be some history in Chikyuu that can be eerily similar to our Earth because I doubt there would be total peace for that long (Racles and God's Wrath being proof).
Like since Ishabana has a lot of European influence, what if they had something similar to the French Revolution considering how it's the Country of Beauty (and Medicine)? What if a monarch took their love of Beauty too far that they neglected the people and medicine and led to a revolution (and with a very specific execution method)?
How many times did Toufu's main Lord be overthrown? Surely if Kaguragi was able to become Lord King 15 years prior to the series, there has to be other Toufu Lords overthrown outside of Iroki that God Hachi would've found worthy.
Did N'kosopa ever have a late-stage capitalism crisis with the giant trash heap they called the slums? When did electing their King as President become a thing? Why hasn't Yanma created a Tech Recycling plan if he hasn't done so already? His laptop is literally an amalgamation of trash parts so surely he would've considered Recycling Programs for that stuff.
What about Gokkan? Has there ever been an uprising from the prisoners against the Supreme Justice at the time? What if a former King was corrupted by the power that the other royals had to step in and find a worthy replacement?
When exactly did Shugoddom become impoverish and how long has it been happening? Why is it even possible for the Country of Industrialization (and possibly the hub for factories) to be so impoverish? When were the Castle and KingOh ZERO built that could've led to such conditions?
