“You’ve Gotta Check This Band Out” A multi-bandom micro essay zine
Is there a band you’re obsessed with? No matter if its 00s pop-punk, folk music from 1960, a rock band you saw in your friends basement and never forgot- If you’re excited about a musician, I want to hear about it.
The details: What’s a micro essay?
A micro essay an essay around 200-700 words in length. For the purposes of this zine, it can be any format or style, no matter how experimental, as long as its nonfiction.
What can I write about?
This zine is going to focus on bands but is open to works about any musician or musical scene that you feel passionate about
What should I write about?
i’m most interested in looking at how music functions in a broader cultural context, but anything you’re passionate about, I wanna see. This can include but isn’t limited to: - How the sexual politics of a time period affected music - Analysis of how a cover song affects the original piece - Why this band you saw that one time was so rad - How various identity politics and music intersect and interact - Why everyone is wrong about [Insert widely hated album name here] - Why DID that secret chord David played please the lord?
Submissions will be open until June 7th!
You can send plain text and I will lay it out, or if you want to design your own page, including text, illustration, stickers, cut/paste, etc, please make it 5.5in x 8.5in and 300ppi resolution JPG
Please send submissions to [email protected]
Some other rules/FAQs
YES it can be a piece thats already been published as long as you include where it was first published (your blog, another zine, etc)
YES its ok if its a little bit longer or shorter- the word limit is a soft guide, if its 756 words etc thats fine
YES comics are ok as long as they are nonfiction
If you an illustrator who wants to work on illustrating essays, email or dm me!
Contributors will receive a print copy, zine will also be posted online for free, and will be sold at-cost in my shop.
If you have questions plz ask!

Super excited to finally share my full piece for @mcrswarmzine !! I'm so happy that I was able to be part of such a massive project with so many incredible artists and writers. Also, shout out to the mods Cieara, Amanda, Nick, and Luca for undertaking the logistical side of this zine. Y'all are amazing.
If you're unfamiliar, SWARM: Answering the Call is a charity zine with the goal of bringing artists and writers together from all over the globe to express how the MCR return tour personally impacted them. The preorder period for physical copies and merch ended in October, but you can still purchase digital copies here! As of December 2023, the zine has raised $10,000 for Black & Pink, an organization dedicated to prison abolition and supporting incarcerated LGBT+ people and those living with HIV/AIDS.
Again, I'm so honored to be part of a project that brought the fandom together in this way.

I was very excited to get to contribute to this wonderful zine, Songs For 2022! Ten artists all contributed a playlist of songs, a little artist statement on the meaning behind the choices, and a beautiful fold-out cover art!
It’s risograph-printed, 4 x 4 inches, 24 (or 48 depending on how you count them) pages, beautifully printed by Colour Code Printing in Canada and assembled by hand in Vermont.
It features art and playlists by Carey Pietsch @careydraws, Kendra, Kat @ocicatsy-sfw, Maia Kobabe, Dylan Edwards @dylanndr, Ben Wilgus, Orcamode, sfè r. monster @sfemonster, and SWS @swsearle, with design and illustration by Kori Michele @tumblngkori. You can find copies for sale at Kori’s online shop and you can listen to my playlist (all kpop) here. My artist statement under the cut.
It’s almost impossible to overstate how much kpop music has come to mean to me, especially since the start of the pandemic. Before covid, I was already a listener and casual fan. The bright pop beats kept my energy up, and the Korean lyrics didn’t distract my brain while trying to write in English. During social distancing, kpop music and fandom dominated my free time and media consumption, and looking forward to new music videos and online concerts filled my otherwise empty calendar. I participated in passionate, lively conversations with other fans online. Now I have turned many of these internet connections into IRL friendships. This summer, I looked around a car full of friends road tripping from SF to LA for a kpop concert and realized every single one of us had met online through kpop. Without this music, I wouldn’t have any of these very dear people in my life today.
This playlist has some of my very favorite songs of the past few years. Each one sparkles and bubbles like champagne in my ears, makes me sway in my seat, and close my eyes in pleasure. Even if you don’t regularly listen to kpop music, I highly recommend these songs. And if you like them– there’s so much more to discover!
