I really loved this manga. It almost felt like there should have been a playlist to go with it as you read along. And I’ll admit I listened to a lot of kpop while reading this and at least for me, it fit the vibe that I had going into this manga. I really liked that all of the guys were so different and yet they meshed really well. I loved that they had an almost brotherly thing going on. And I loved that they all wanted Mafuyu to feel included. Volume one is getting four out of five stars. I can’t wait to read the next volume!
Reading Challenge Prompt Fills:

#bookedging: a pre 2020 release (original Japanese release was in 2014)

THE COMPETITION BY JEONG SEOLHWA
The other day, I decided to move my Twitter threads here to archive them because the Moments are gone. We can never have good things now, can we…
Tumblr media
Hi friends! I'm here to talk about a chapter that I haven't been able to get out of my mind, and what better way to gush about a webtoon than putting together a thread?
I have recommended Jeong Seolhwa's The Competition on Manta Comics before on Twitter and I'll include the summary and certain points that charmed me upon reading it immediately after the release.
The story focuses on Hokyung, who met violin at a young age thanks to his close friend Eujoo, who’s competing on a national level now and was given Eujoo’s old, 3/4 violin. Being from a big family with average financial means = Hokyung can’t pursue music, when his hand-me-down violin is finally broken, he’s off to a luthier Eujoo recommends. He can’t get it repaired due to the cost, but that meeting opens up a different door to the dreams he’s been putting a lock on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, hello gorgeous! It’s so pretty and it’s more similar to the manga form than webtoon format w/ infinite scrolling. And it has the most beautiful chapter covers, just look at them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two things I especially appreciated in this work: first is Eujoo’s conflicting feelings were portrayed really well. He’s constantly torn between cheering on his friend and wanting to compete against him bc he knows how fond Hokyung is of violin. But he fears his talent and HY surpassing him might mean all these years he practiced like crazy was all in vain. There was also a past regret that weighs on EJ and that affects his performance & health.
Tumblr media
The second would be the emphasis on money. Not only it costs a fortune to buy a good instrument and take classes from a renowned teacher, the idea of pursuing music as your carreer isn’t generally even an option when you’re a child in a middle or lower class family. Even if they mean well & are supportive of their kids, music can be a hobby at best. My first impression of this series was that it was emotional, sweet, and looked super pretty!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Circling back to why I'm once again talking about The Competition. Currently, Hokyung is in the middle of a violin competition, and the chapter that left me in awe and got me all teary-eyed by how beautiful and expressive it is, is his most recent performance. It's his first time officially playing with an orchestra, and first time his family is hearing him perform. All the contestants in this round play their interpretation of Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 in G Minor:
Chapter 69 opens with HY stepping onto the stage, and save from one comment before his performance, the rest of the chapter is "silent". Except, it isn't. The flow and depth of the music, the communication between HY and the conductor, HY's emotions, the audience's response, all are shown through body language (hand gestures specifically), gaze, and the color and the density of lines.
Tumblr media
Those "blobs" first emerge from the orchestra, then you see the release in the hand gesture of the conductor, he and HY make eye contact, and in the next page, you see the energy being condensed into HY's violin, and then is released back into the auditorium. The whole time, we witness how the sound permeates and changes throughout the performance, it's also important to note that the "blobs" vary depending on the nature of the performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ending's again beautifully visualised when HY finishes, then it's followed by the conductor and then, the audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't read tons of manga that focuses on music, but it was the very first time that I've felt THIS immersed in a musical performance on paper. It was honestly phenomenal and I'm still trying to wrap my head around how some artists are capable of conveying things that /should be/ beyond lines that are "just pen on paper". I have to say, if you aren't reading this masterpiece, you're missing out! This webtoon is seriously guilty of making me feel things every Sunday!! I can't have that!!!
Note: Due to its format, The Competition is only available on Manta's app.

Soooo... PPPPPP
is a series I've been reading in shounen jump I can usually tell if a series is gonna get canceled and this is one of them. Still going strong tho with 66 chapters. I have alot of mixed feelings.
Tumblr media
It's a prove yourself to a system story (shokugeki no souma) series but against 1 guy the dad. So theirs family drama cuz the septuplets. (No wonder the mom is dying damn), 6 of them are geniuses and lucky; the main character isnt and was kicked out of the family. Instead of shounen fights its piano fighting now think artsy kurko no basket.
Uuuuh...spoilers I guesss chp 59
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get some interesting stuff about the mom who's dying. in chapter 59 and the relationship with her kids during her last moments that I thought were the most interesting and cool stuff about her kids. Whether they forgive her for leaving them or not. We see a bit of the relationship between the mother and father in the past. With the little bit we see of them we can see she grounded the eccentric him of the past. We see in the one panel her increasing feelings of inferiority and starting to correlate herself with lucky as inferior to the dad.
Interesting stuff and than the following chapters are soooooo mehhh. They like skirt around the big frickin elephant. We do not see lucky at the funeral with the otogami family. We see a bunch of side characters doing random asf shit instead. Way to break the tension. Than everyone's like wow I feel bad luckys mom died that's sooo sad anyway..... even most of her kids say this. That might be on purpose tho but yeah uhhhh too nonchalant honestly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was obviously gonna b used for charachter development, what I don't like is the fact she has potential to be better but they missed the landing so hard.
Art is unique n intriguing but also confusing asf depending on the paneling sooooo.. but it's doing something I keep reading weekly

I really can't wait until PPPPPP gets some sort of adaptation- OST or anime because my music illiterate self is missing out. 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though without being super familiar with the music or reading music, it's one of my favorite non-battle shonen entries in Jump right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a lot of heart in the story. Kind of like Demon Slayer vibes but without the demons. I would recommend PPPPPP for those who liked KnY for the family values. 💜💜💜
You don't have to be a musician to appreciate it. Plus the character designs are super fun 🥰

Escucha Atentamente is suchhh a good manga so far! Highly recommend!
“Born into a musical family, Gu Si was known as a genius, but was never recognized by his father because of the lack of emotion in his music. In order to overcome this shortcoming, Gu Si began to study the music of Charles, a musician known for his emotions. Who would have thought that halfway through the book, he would wake up 200 years ago and find himself in front of a paralyzed man with rusty piano skills, who is actually the legendary Charles?”

Continuing my read of ‘Given’.
My first ever Boys’ Love Manga. It has been a very interesting read. I definitely want to give my full thoughts when I complete it.
I’m very interested in the anime adaptation as well now.
