MCU Multiverse Explained
I have seen some confusion in the MCU fandom regarding the multiverse, specifically the difference between an ‘alternate universe’ and a ‘timeline’. I wanted to create a crash course for you. I plan on updating this as we get more content in the Multiverse Saga.
Tumblr media
In Avengers Endgame, the Avengers figure out time travel thanks to Tony Stark’s ‘Mobius Strip’ and Hank Pym’s quantum tunnel when Scott Lang returns from the Quantum Realm. Although it had been 5 years for those on earth, Scott had only been in the Quantum Realm for 5 hours as time moves differently in that demotion. The Avengers decide to go back in time to retrieve the infinity stones from the past to undo Thano’s snap.
When Bruce Banner goes back in time to retrieve the time stone from the Ancient One, we learn that altering the past does not change the future, but instead, it creates another timeline. She says, “If I give up the time stone to help your reality, I'm dooming my own.” We understand now (thanks to the Loki series) that this is likely because the TVA (Time Variance Authority) will show up and eradicate the branched timeline.
At almost the same time, Steve Rodgers attempts to retrieve the Tesseract, which contains the space stone, from the Battle of New York. However, Loki escapes with it then he is captured by the TVA soon after.
In Loki season 1, we learn the TVA is a bureaucratic society that controls the flow of time. If there is a branch in the timeline, they have a window of opportunity to capture whoever caused it (AKA a variant) and reset the timeline before it reaches a certain threshold. If left unchecked, it will branch off and cause a Nexus Event. A Nexus Event is the birth of another universe or reality.
In the final episode of Loki, we learn that the TVA is run by ‘He Who Remains’. He has isolated the current MCU timeline (AKA the sacred timeline) to prevent a multiverse war. He explains that he is from earth, born in the 30th century, and he discovered the multiverse. At the same time, other versions of him were doing the same but some had ill intentions. He is killed by a Loki variant named Sylvie. In doing this, she unlocked the multiverse.
Now the sacred timeline no longer exists without He Who Remains. All the work the TVA has done has been undone. It didn’t just change future events, but past events as well. Every timeline that branched off can now become a Nexus Event, creating another universe.
In the show, What if…? We learn there is a being that observes the entire multiverse called The Watcher. He can view all of time and space but is unable to interfere until the existence of the multiverse is threatened by Ultron.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, we get introduced to the multiverse again. Different versions of Peter Parker (and his villains) are transported to the current MCU timeline due to a spell that Dr. Strange performs that does not go according to plan.  These are not alternate timelines of Peter. Instead, they are Peter’s from totally separate universes that the current one would not have had access to when He Who Remains was alive.
 At the end of WandaVision we see Wanda, now the Scarlet Witch, reading a book called the Darkhold. Then, in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, we learn that she has been using the Darkhold to study the multiverse to find her children that she lost using a method called ‘Dreamwalking’.
We are introduced to a Character named America Chavez, who has the power to travel through the multiverse. Wanda wants to harness America’s power. In this story, we get to see brief images of what some of those universes look like. Some are very similar to the main timeline (referred to now as 616) and others are incredibly different, like a world where everything is made out of paint.
Also, in Multiverse of Madness, we learn about a phenomenon called an ‘Incursion’. This happens when two or more universes collide, resulting in the annihilation of one or all of them.  In the post-credit scene, we are briefly introduced to a sorceress, named Clea, when she approaches Stephen Strange. She explains that his actions have created an incursion and needs his help to stop it. They enter the ‘Dark Dimension’ which we saw in the first Dr. Strange film when Stephen entered it to face Dormammu.
We have seen an incursion once before in What if…? when Dr. Strange becomes Strange Supreme. In this universe, Stephen loses his love interest, Christine Palmer, in an accident and tries to undo it using the time stone. We learn from the Ancient One that her death is considered a ‘Universal Point in Time’ and cannot be undone. His attempt to do so results in the destruction of that entire universe.
Let’s circle back to He Who Remains for a moment. In Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania Scott, Cassie, Hope, Hank, and Janet are trapped in the Quantum Realm which is a subatomic dimension that was explored briefly in the previous Ant-Man films. Here we meet a variant of He Who Remains who goes by the name Kang the Conqueror.
Kang has a ship that allows him to travel the multiverse, but the engine (AKA power core) of his ship is not functioning. We learn that this variant of Kang was banished here by the ‘Counsel of Kangs’ and he is trying to escape. Ant-Man enters the power core to repair it for Kang to save Cassie. Here he is trapped in a paradox where every probability becomes a reality creating countless versions of himself. He eventually fixes it with the help of Hope. They defeat Kang as he is seeming sucked into the power core himself.
The credit scenes show the Counsel of Kangs (including Rama-Tut and Immortus) announcing that the Kang they had banished to the Quantum Realm is dead. Then we see Loki and Mobius, in the early 20th century, find another Kang called Victor Timely, setting us up for Loki season 2.
So, that’s the facts and basically everything we know so far in the MCU about the multiverse. I do briefly want to get into my opinions and interpretations.
When He Who Remains was killed, it altered the reality of the current timeline in other ways as well. Not every branch in the timeline can cause a Nexus Event or a new universe. Some branches may end naturally on their own, or eventually re-join the timeline they started from.
We know that the events of Endgame and the time heist they performed were part of the sacred timeline and were supposed to happen.  I have seen some people asking what [insert character that was introduced in Phase 4] doing during the events of Infinity War and Endgame. My theory is, they did not exist then.
Let’s take America Chavez, for example. She has the ability to travel across universes. However, there is no way she would have been able to reach 616 as the timeline was completely isolated from the multiverse thanks to He Who Remains. Plus, if she did somehow reach it, she would have been swiftly pruned by the TVA.
I have another example, in the sacred timeline, a meteor containing vibranium crashed into earth, eventually creating the Kingdom of Wakanda. However, it is possible that a branch in the timeline means that two (or more) vibranium meteors crashed into earth allowing Talokan to emerge. When the sacred timeline existed the branch involving the second meteor could have been reset. Instead, the timeline branched out and re-joined the current timeline instead of creating another universe. This could be why Namor was not around during Thanos’ attack.
There are, of course, other possibilities as well (Namor might have been among the snapped, or did not want to reveal himself to the surface world) but there is a possibility Talokan only exists due to the death of He Who Remains. The same could be theorized about other characters like Shang Chi, the Eternals, and Moon Knight.
Anyways, I’m excited to see where the Multiverse Saga takes us next! Let me know your thoughts.

Nobody's perfect. Not even superheroes.
But God, I am so very, very tired of investing in major female characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only to see them meet an ignominious end. Let's set aside the fact that it took 21 tries to even get a female-led film, 2019's Captain Marvel. There have always been interesting, bad-ass women in the MCU — they just keep being done dirty.
The men of the MCU routinely save the day, seemingly with nine lives to spare (not that I'm complaining about having more Tom Hiddleston in my life, but for the love of the Norse gods, how many times has Loki been brought back from the dead?). Meanwhile, the women of the MCU's greatest asset seems to be the most stereotypically feminine of traits: sacrifice.
Don't get me wrong, sacrifice is a heroic quality. It takes a special kind of person to lay down their life for the greater good. But it gets exhausting when that special kind of person seems to be mostly female (thank you for your service, though, Tony Stark and Vision).
First, there was Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), who, in the quest for the Infinity Stones, sacrifices herself for the Soul Stone, sparing Hawkeye's life. Her justification? Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has a family who needs him. So what does that say about Black Widow's adoptive sister Yelena (Florence Pugh) or other close friends who make up her found family?
A lot has been written about that narrative choice, and it's arguably the most polarizing death in the MCU. Especially since it came after Natasha's character endured outright sexism for years, particularly in the Age of Ultron, where the script reduced her to her reproductive choices, having her call herself a "monster" because she can't have children. Despite all that, it might've been possible to take her death as a moment of valor that served the storytelling — if Marvel didn't keep recycling that motif to motivate its male characters.
Here lies Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), Ajak (Salma Hayek), Wanda/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and the newest addition to the dead fierce ladies club, Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). And that's not even including the saintly mamas who have died to light a fire under their sons (hi, Thor and Shang-Chi). Or the varying degrees of lip service to female empowerment Marvel has come under fire for over the years.
Sure, a past version of Gamora may be alive in the multiverses, and not even Elizabeth Olsen knows if her character is permanently dead after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But I bet you can guess how she (maybe) died at the end: That's right, sacrificing herself for the greater good, even after being villainized for "breaking the rules," something her male counterparts do regularly. Sure, Wanda's rule-breaking might have cost many innocent lives, but it's not like she caused a universe-destroying Incursion (looking at you, Doctor Strange) or unleashed a wave of supervillains in a last-ditch effort to get into college (you too, Parker).
Even with all that, it was not until Thor: Love and Thunder that I finally reached my breaking point with Marvel's treatment of its female heroes' mortality. And I had such high hopes! Throughout the press tour, Natalie Portman made much of her return to the MCU being predicated on Jane finally having something interesting to do. The trailers showed Portman's Jane kitted out as a fully-fledged Lady Thor, complete with a winged helmet and wielding Mjölnir (did I maybe cheer more for this than even Steve Rogers proving his worthiness? Yes). What's more, here, she would not only become a hero in her own right, but she'd get to team up with another MCU favorite, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).
Imagine my irritation when the interesting thing they've finally given Jane to do is have cancer and die (yes, I know this is a storyline from the comics; it's still annoying). It's pretty evident from the earliest shots of her in the film that she's not long for this world. But it's a real pain in the Asgard that, like Natasha, Gamora, and Wanda before her, she only gets to step into the spotlight just as it's about to be extinguished. There are flickers of hope that becoming a Thor will strengthen and heal her. But for dudes, with great power comes great responsibility. For ladies, with great power comes an expiration date.
When Thor finally forces Jane to stop cavorting as a Thor and seek genuine treatment for her illness, he acknowledges he'll have to try to complete his mission alone. That is until Jane swoops in at the last minute to save the day (and his very well-toned butt), knowing full well the effort will kill her a lot sooner than if she waited in her hospital bed. Just like the women before her, she makes a choice — and that choice is to die for the sake of the world and the man she loves.
There is nothing wrong with this choice at face value. It doesn't make Jane (or Wanda, or Natasha...) weak or lesser than any of the male heroes of the MCU. Indeed, it's a death so noble it earns Jane a place in Valhalla. But it would be more emotionally satisfying if I hadn't seen it so many times before. And if it didn't feel like that, while the men of the MCU get to be arrogant, wholesome, angry, remorseful, and any number of complex things, women's clearest path to heroism seems to be death.
Sure, I want more female superheroes. More kick-ass ladies who I can dress up as for Halloween and cheer on. But not if their only purpose in the plot is virtual martyrdom. The MCU has taken great pains to make its heroes nuanced figures who grapple with the human cost of their adventures; it makes the case that there are many ways to be a hero. Unless, of course, you're a woman. (Florence Pugh, Hailee Steinfeld, Brie Larson, y'all might want to get a clause in your contracts, just saying).
Because women are expendable. We are living in a world where women are fighting for their lives and their rights daily, where misogyny is insidious, and women regularly fear violence from strangers and partners alike. It's easy to feel that the cost of our lives is cheap, that we mean more in death than we do in life. The MCU, intentionally or not, reiterates that narrative.
I don't want a fictional world of heroes where a woman's greatest superpower is death. It's a hill I'm willing to do anything but die on.

I got a theory about Phase Four of the MCU. I have no idea if anyone else has posed this or something similar so, this might not be as interesting as I think it is. Or I could be waaaaaaaaaay off base. I’m going to put it out here anyway cause why not.
I think Phase Four is disjointed because the movies and TV shows are taking place in different multiverses from one another and that is going to be a big reveal in Phase Five.
You still with me?
Okay, let me explain.
Theory Time Below the Cut! (WARNING! SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE MCU TO DATE!)
Phase Four started out with our heroes who were brought back by the blip and living with the aftermath. It was Wanda dealing with the loss of the family she always wanted and never got the chance at. Sam and Bucky were trying to figure out their place in a post-Avengers world. Things were still anchored in the Infinity Stones saga, dealing with the aftermath of half the population returning and the chaos it created. WandaVision and TFATWS along with Hawkeye work as companion pieces in their way. They are the only three shows that live in the aftermath of the Snap/Blip. She Hulk and Ms Marvel mention the events of Endgame but the chaos of half the population disapearing and returning are not a thing anyone deals with or even mentions in either show.
Then Loki sets up the multiverse that was hinted at in Endgame with the first season ending on the fracturing of the Prime Timeline Kang tried to keep as the only timeline. New timelines similar to the MCU started to form. Every movie and series since has been disjointed from the story line Phase Four started with.
Hawkeye, WandaVision, TFATWS, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man: NWH and Doctor Strange: MOM all take place during the Prime Timeline. Everything else might have some commonality, but are in a diferent universe.
Spider-Man: NWH and Doctor Strange: MOM have a connecting thread, but none of the other moves do. Every Phase Four entry since Loki have virtually no running plot thread or even seem to acknowledge something that happened in a previous series, not like how Phases One thru Three did. No mentions of two kaiju sized Egyptian Gods fighting in streets of Cairo in Ms Marvel or She Hulk. How has no one seen the dead Celestial sticking out of the ocean? Wong mentions that memory erasing spells are messy, but is that a reference to NWH or something else that happened in that universe? The end credits of episode 5 of She Hulk hint that mutants may already be a thing (shoes referencing Deadpool, Cyclops, Cable, and several others) and I wonder if that is a fun Easter Egg for us nerds to squee over or a hint.
Kang and the Multiverse saga is coming so, what if Phase Four is setting up all these other ‘verses and not outright telling us so it can be a reveal in Phase Five. Phase One set up the idea of Infinity Stones and Thanos before it was finally revealed that would be the overarching storyline during Phase Two.
OR...
No one is communicating and I’m putting more thought into the MCU than the creators are.
(I feel like the latter may be the truth)

MULTIVERSAL RULES
There are so many rules of multiversal travel in the MCU that I am kind of confused trying to keep track of all of them. So, I thought of compiling a list of multiversal rules introduced so far to make it easy to keep track of everything we have been told so far. *I will keep updating this list as new rules are introduced.
The multiverse is a concept we know very little about 😂😂 (Doctor Strange)
Changing the past doesn't change the future, it only creates a new timeline (Endgame)
The Avengers closed off the branches in timelines by returning the stones from where they picked them up, essentially creating a closed loop. (Endgame)
HWR rearranged the multiverse into a singular timeline called the Sacred timeline (Loki)
The TVA is tasked with maintaining the proper flow of time, as predetermined by HWR (Loki)
HWR isn't concerned with protecting timeline or avoiding time displacements. He only prunes events that lead to the rise of his variants and the multiversal war between them. That is why they let Steve go back in time in Endgame, maybe because his diversion didn't lead to Kang's variants rising (Loki)
Stepping off the predetermined path creates a nexus event (Loki)
The TVA tracks variants with their temporal aura (Loki)
To fix a nexus event, the TVA resets the timeline, which loops the timeline back to the time before the nexus event, leaving the variants without a place on the timeline (Loki)
The TVA can't reset a nexus event past the red line, also called nearing the apex (Loki)
The TVA need to show up in real time to fix a nexus event (Loki)
Nexus events are caused by chaotic alterations of predetermined outcomes (Loki)
It is impossible to start a nexus event in an apocalypse because everyone and everything is destined for eminent destruction (Loki)
While pruning the TVA just transfers the matter of the timeline to the Void at the end of time (Loki)
The Void is the beginning of a new timeline (Loki)
Killing HWR maybe resetted the timeline paving way for the Kang variants to fight each other again (Loki)
Sylvie killing HWR reactivated the multiverse, which led to all the phase 4 multiversal projects like NWH and MoM 🙂 (interview here)
There are certain fixed events in a character which cannot be changed or it would change their entire course of history. These are called absolute points. (What if episode 4)
Doctor Strange couldn't save Christine because her death was an absolute point, which led to Strange becoming a sorcerer, and changing that would create a paradox (What if ep 4)
Two variants can have totally different appearance and physical features (Loki, NWH), even their relatives can be totally different people in each timeline (the 3 aunt Mays)
It's possible for certain events to not have happened in certain timelines, like no Avengers in Tobey and Andrew's timeline (NWH)
Dreams are the windows into the lives of our multiversal selfs (MOM)
America Chavez can open multiversal portals (MOM)
The gap between universes is called gap junction. (MOM)
The first rule of multiversal travel is that you don't know anything 😂 (MOM)
Food is free in most universes (MOM)
There is a universe where everyone is made of paint (MOM)
Meddling too much with the multiverse can cause two universes to collapse. This is called an Incursion (MOM)
It's possible for variants from other universes to carry new germs which can be harmful to the said universe (MOM)
The MCU universe is 616. The Illuminati one is 838 (MOM)
The darkhold has a spell which allows one to possess their alternate variants body. This is called dreamwalking (MOM)
There is a difference between alternate timeline and alternate universe (this one I deduced myself)

The Multiverse Saga: Phase Four Cosmic and Legacy Origins. How do you feel about Marvel's Phase 4 now that we're close to the end and the pieces are starting to lay themselves out before us? (SPOILERS for all Phase 4 Marvel movies and series.)
Tumblr media
Phase 4, the way I see it, has set up two different storylines. One on Earth and one Beyond. The opening act of an epic story of intergalactic scale set on the cosmic stage is complete, left on Ms. Marvels cliffhanger. And by the end of the year all 6 of our original Avengers legacies will be passed on to new heroes: Sam Wilson, Captain America. Yelena Belova, White Widow. Kate Bishop, Hawkeye. Jane Fostor, Mighty Thor. Jennifer Walters, She-Hulk. and Riri Williams, Iron Heart.
Cosmic Origins
"There's an entire chapter dedicated to you in the Darkhold. That's the Book of the Damned. The Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged. She has no coven. No need for incantations... Her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. It's your destiny to destroy the world." - Agatha Harkness, reading the Darkhold Prophecy."
Finally Wanda's origin story. We see in the final episodes the horrible traumas that forged her into the mythical being known as The Scarlet Witch. The death of her parents and terror of being stranded in a war torn country. Being manipulated by a force of evil into being experimented on in a trial no one else had survived. How the Mind Stone itself, the self-contained thoughts of the cosmos, saw the potential that she had repressed within herself, and bringing it back to the surface. And the losses of her brother, Pietro. Her found family, the Avengers. Her lover, Vision. Herself, in the blip. Finally her children, in the Westview Hex. Then returning to a world with no one left to care for her and no one who cared for what she sacrificed for them. All alone with nothing but the Darkhold to soothe her.
"We freed the timeline. We found him beyond the storm. A Citadel at the end of time. He's terrifying. He planned everything. He's seen everything. He knows everything... Someone is coming. Countless different versions of a very dangerous person and they're all set on war. We need to prepare." - Loki, in the new TVA.
Sylvie made a decision that can never be undone, for good or better, the multiverse is open, and it's mad. Loki sets out the rules of multidimensional travel that the Avengers played fast and loose with. The series introduces us to the sacred timeline. Which as I understand it, is a grouping of parallel universes nearly identical to the MCU-verse. There are countless universes that the TVA allow to exist, ones in which Nathaniel Richards does not exist, and ones that don't cause Nexus Events. This so called "Sacred Timeline" is what the Ancient One in Doctor Strange spoke of, a multiverse sure, but one bound by the will of He Who Remains. We also later find out that what the Time Variance Authority calls a "Nexus Event" is also known as an "Incursion". Any universe that doesn't fit these qualifications gets pruned. This is how the Avengers are able to time travel, not by travelling through time in their own universe, but to that point in time in a parallel universe. This is why the Ancient One explains in Endgame that her timeline would be doomed without the time stone. That can't possibly be the same universe as the MCU, if it was her reality being doomed would mean the MCU-reality being doomed.
"I don't understand. This shouldn't be possible." - The Watcher
"Oh, but anything is possible in a multiverse." - Ultron Supreme
The Watcher is right, something like this wasn't possible. Until now.
"They don't match any artifacts from our codex... They're not vibranium... Not like any alien tech I've seen. How long did your Dad have them before he gave them to you?... About a thousand years... The thermoluminescence indicates they're older than that. By a lot... The first time you used the rings we felt it, in Kamar-Taj... What is it?... A beacon. They're sending a message... A message to where?... *beep beep beep* I'm so sorry I have to deal with this..." Wong, Bruce, Carol, Shang-chi and Katie, discussing the Ten Ring Bands
An ancient alien technology hidden on Earth for untold thousands of years, suddenly releasing a beacon and sending a message. To where they originated from perhaps? Then a few days later when this meeting is being held Carol is interrupted. Something very urgent has come up and she needs to leave immediately. Heading into space on a mission, could it be related to the ten rings beacon? Shang-chi better prepare himself for whatever is coming.
"The end of one life is the beginning of another. Our universe is a constant exchange of energy. An infinite cycle of creation and destruction. Celestials use energy gathered from host planets to create suns, generating gravity, heat, and light for new galaxies to form. Without us, our universe will fall into darkness. All life will die... I created the Deviants for the same purpose I created you. Every Celestial host planet has its own predators. I first sent the Deviants to exterminate them so intelligent life could grow. But there was a flaw in their design. They evolved. Became predators themselves. And I lost control of them. I built and programmed you, Eternals, to be synthetic beings and incapable of evolution, to correct my mistake. Sersi, Ajak has chosen you to take her place as the Prime Eternal. Do not fail me." - Arishem the Judge, explaining the World Forge to Sersi
In Eternals, Arishem takes Sersi on a cosmic cruise to give her, as the new Prime Eternal, a lesson in how the ecosystem of the universe is structured and how it works. This was a nice lore dump that is going to become much more important in the future films when more Cosmic Entities that live on a Galactic scale begin to make their presence. What lies beyond Earth and the 9 Realms for our Eternals?
"They're starting to come through and I can't stop them... We're too late for that. They're here. They're here because of you."
"What if everyone forgot who I was?... They're coming here because of me right? Because I'm Peter Parker? So cast a new spell. But this time make everyone forget who Peter Parker is. Make everyone forget... me... It would work right?"
"Yeah it would work. But you gotta understand, that would mean that everyone who knows and loves you, we... We'd have no memory of you. It would be as though you never existed."
"I know. Do it." - Doctor Strange and Peter Parker, as the weight of an incursion hangs over them.
Can I just stop for a moment to say what a performance by Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland on these lines, what a delivery.
Strange blames Peter, but truthfully we know the blame lies with Sylvie. As the Watcher put it "This shouldn't be possible". But now that He Who Remains is dead and the TVA is being run by a different variant of Nathaniel Richards their goal is no longer to eradicate contrivances in the sacred timeline nor to stop Nexus Events. For if they were they would be there to stop this from happening. This makes the incursion Sylvie and Loki were about to cause a walk in the park. An incursion of a nigh infinite number of universes, right on the MCU-verse's doorstep. Hanging right over top the Statue of Liberty. Will anyone ever truly know what happened, or what Peter sacrificed for them? A truly epic climax that is only bolstered in hindsight by the info we learn next.
"Eon's ago the first demon, Chthon, carved his dark magic into this tomb. These same spells were later transcribed, into the Darkhold. There's no telling what soulless monstrosities lie within."
"They've been waiting for me. This isn't a tomb. It's a throne... Billy and Tommy. What if they get sick? In the infinite multiverse, there's a cure for every illness. A solution to every problem. I won't lose them again."
"Try as you might Wanda, you cannot control everything."
"But I can. Look around you. It's carved in stone. I was meant to rule everything." Wong and Wanda, investigating the Darkhold Castle on Mount Wundagore.
The multiverse, at last one of our heroes goes on a desperate journey through the multiverse itself to save a universal hopping teenager on the run from the Scarlet Witch. It is here we learn the truth from none other than Professor Xavier and Reed Richards themselves, well multiversalthemselves, that what the TVA call nexus events, they call incursions. Now this universe isn't parallel to ours so how could it have existed all this time? Well that's the funny thing about space time, everything is happening everywhere all at once (that other movie really nailed the title). This means that while that universe has existed for millennia in it's own timeline, that timeline was only allowed to grow past safe boundaries because the TVA no longer exists to prune unsafe universes. Richards himself confirms this when he states that our Stranges presence is harming the stability of their reality and risking an incursion, which the TVA would have stepped in to resolve. In the end Strange comes face to face with one of the greatest threats in the universe: Himself. A mirrored reflection starring back at him showing him what could have been as he examines the remnants of a New York ravaged by incursion. An image of what Strange saw come so close to happening to his own reality and so many more just months ago.
"In exchange for your life, do you swear to protect the travelers of the night, and bring my vengeance to those that would do them harm?" - Khonshu to Marc Spector, as he lie bleeding out alone in the deserts of Egypt.
The Moon. One of the most important celestial bodies in our galaxy. And it's God, Khonshu. Moon Knight opens us up to a whole world of supernatural entities lurking among those on Earth. Inspired by and representing different aspects of nature and the cosmos the Egyptian God's have long since abandoned Earth. All but Khonshu and Ammit, two sides of an ideological coin battling for the souls of humanity. The other Gods ignored them, choosing to live instead in the mystical realm of Overvoid. Which Khonshu only describes as opulent and disagreeing to his tastes. What lies in Heliopolis and what significance will it play in this interdimensional story?
"I wish that you would just focus on you. Your story. I mean, who do you want to be in this world? Do you want to be good, like we raised you. Or do you want to be some, you know, this cosmic head in the clouds person. You think about that... Cosmic." - Muneeba and Kamala, after Kamala's powers are activated by the mysterious Bangle at Avengercon
Ms. Marvel takes us on a flashback to 1942 where we meet Kamala's great grandmother Aisha and her Jinn companions as they raid what's left of an ancient structure that was once occupied and inhabited by the Ten Rings under Wenwu, for the artifact they're looking for. A mysterious Bangle found on the arm of a humanoid with blue skin. What link does Kamala's Bangle have to Shang-chi's Bangles? The only person who could tell us more is Carol Danvers, last seen investigating a mystery threat after the ten rings let off a beacon and only returning once she found the matching Bangle that pairs with Kamala's, causing them to switch places leaving Carol stuck back on Earth while Kamala is lost. This leaves us on an epic cliffhanger for what's coming next in the multiverse saga phase 5. But this is only one side of the story.
Back on Earth the Avengers legacy lives on. Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton, Thor, Bruce Banner and Tony Stark have all either passed away, or moved on from their station as an Avenger. The next six projects take great lengths to give their new legacy characters an awesome, and respectable introduction to those who have taken up the mantle of Earth's Mightiest. But with such a great legacy comes downfalls, those who couldn't live up to it and failed, those who were wronged by the righteous actions of the Avengers. Lurking in the shadow of that legacy lies Val, slowly, methodically building a team of those wronged by the Avengers. The Thunderbolts.
Legacy Origins
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
The first series focuses on our new Captain America, Sam Wilson, and shows us all why he deserves to be the one holding that shield and taking up that mantle. There will never be another Steve Rogers, but Sam isn't trying to be Steve. He's his own man, who follows his own principles of what he think is good and right, just like Steve always did. Sam doesn't ask "What would Steve do?" he asks "What am I gonna do?". This is what leads him to reluctantly working alongside frenemy Bucky Barnes, The White Wolf, formerly The Winter Solider, and one of their greatest former adversaries, Baron Zemo. As well as eventually the disgraced former Captain America, John Walker, later U.S. Agent. Three different levels of reformed villainy, all with ties to Captain America, exactly what Val is looking for.
Black Widow
In Black Widow we meet Yelena Belova, Natasha's beloved, albeit faked, younger sister. And she encapsulates everything that is right with Nat with new flaws of her own. Stuck trapped a member of the Red Room for so long because her sister provided Dreykov with the perfect cover for him to disappear. Forced to harm her widow sisters that dare stand out against him. She is finally freed only to be snapped away and returned in an instant to a life without her sister. Now she is ready to take on her own Avengers level threat. Opposite the Widow sisters is Dreykov's daughter the menacing Taskmaster hunting them across borders with ruthless intent and the ability to master any fighting style she analyzes. A cyborg made for war, and freed from enslavement by the very person who put her there in the first place. Is that enough to make up for what Natasha did to Antonia? Val would sure like to know after she failed to turn Yelena against Clint.
Hawkeye
Kate Bishop had always wanted to be a superhero since the day Hawkeye saved her during the battle of New York 2012. He showed her that anyone had the capability to become an Avenger and in return 15 or so years later she proved to him herself that she was capable to do so. Failing to doubt herself she consistently runs head first into situations she is wildly underprepared and ill experienced to deal with. But that surefire assurance in herself is exactly why she's made it this far and she isn't afraid to jump off a building to prove it. Clint's alter ego is the reason she got in trouble in the first place, by imitating the Ronin she brought the wrath of a woman who lost her family by his hands. Will Kingpins interference be enough to mend ties between them? Or will Val use Maya's suffering to her own advantage?
Thor: Love and Thunder
Jane Foster flies high with the reforged Mjolnir putting herself on the line while in sickness to defend the people of New Asgard and Earth in Thor's self-reflective absence. She puts on a full display of heroism worthy of the title Mighty Thor and fights without questioning her own demise until the very end when there was no one else able to save Thor from the God Butcher's grasp. The ultimate personification of self-sacrifice worthy of leading Asgard. However Jane does not lead, the role of King falls on Bruunhilde, the last Valkyrie. While she loves her work she is just so BORED of being a King all the time, she craves a break for more adventure and ends up unfulfilled when the Thor's save the day without her. If a mysterious woman with no name happened to come knocking on her door with a new assignment, she just might take it up. Hell Val's going to need a heavy hitter like Thor if the Thunderbolts want to stand a chance.
She-Hulk
Who you gonna call? She-Hulk, Attorney at Law. She goes green so you get green. What can she say Banner's cousin isn't a fan of the publicity She-Hulk gets over her, but she's got a new job, a new office, and hopefully some new pairs of shoes. Jen is the perfect person to continue the Hulks legacy on Earth. Hulk thinks humans hate him, and for fair reason, but She-Hulk might help allow the public to view Hulks, and an Abomination, as people too. Emil Blonsky doesn't like when you call him that anymore though, he'd prefer to be sipping green margaritas on a beach with his seven soulmates but unfortunately for Blonsky, Val's got other plans.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Tony Stark, Iron Man. There never was and never will be another like him. Thankfully for legacies you don't need to be just like them, you just have to embody their spirit. Riri Williams has spirit in droves and she makes a suit of armor like you wouldn't believe. She looks up to Tony and prefers it that way, no one wants to look down to their hero. If the rumors are true that one of Starks rivals makes an appearance opposite of her in this movie, well then I think we have our answer who Val's final Thunderbolts recruit may be, until then we just have to wait and see.
If you made it this far thank you so much for reading this I really appreciate it. This is a passion post of mine I have been thinking about for days now and finally sat down to put it out into words. I love Marvel, I love the MCU and I love everything Phase 4 has given us. The multiverse saga is going to be a sprawling epic tale combining at least three different teams of heroes, The Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four and The Avengers. What a lucky fandom we are.
I'd love to hear any thoughts from this community about Phase 4 as a whole, the overarching stories individual stories, theories about what's next, or about my own theories shared here, anything! I don't consider anything I said to be fact, only opinion and if you think I interpreted something incorrectly or if you have a different interpretation please share! Phase 5 looks so exciting and Phase 6 is going to be mind bending I can already see it.

[18+] Breaking the Barrier
```Breaking the Barrier - Marvel/DC panfandom 18+ roleplay - Not a solely erp/smut driven server, but it does include it. ```
***PLOT:*** The Snap. It was felt throughout the universe the first time, and again when Thanos destroyed the stones. It sent a power surge unlike anything that'd ever been seen-- causing an effect no one knew until Tony Stark bravely sacrificed himself to destroy Thanos and his army. With the third and final snap the barrier the separated our universe from the rest of the multiverse began to tear. Sorcerers from both sides frantically worked along with top scientists to stop it, but all they could do was quarantine the spots the openings appeared. However, this doesn't stop new ones from gradually ripping the fabric in more places around the universe. Villains and heroes alike are making their way through the openings for reasons all their own.
Will this be contained to only their neighboring universe? Or will more unexpected universes and planets begin to unveil?
Recently, those lost in battle are beginning to reappear dazed and confused in the universe including the infamous Loki, Tony Stark, Black Widow-- along with many others lost over the past several years... Who all will return? Is this an indication we could see more of those they fought so hard to stop. Both heroes and villains on both sides are on edge, and looking for answers.
Rogue Pt. 1 || Loki
Title: The Deal
Pairing: Loki x TVA!Reader/GN!Reader
Word Count: 1.1k
Warnings: slowburn, language, in third person, spoilers for Loki S1E1!
Summary:  Everyone has their own motive. TVA Agent Y/n L/n wants their original case back that was stolen by one Agent Mobius M. Mobius. Both Agents want to catch the rogue Loki Variant that has been killing the TVA’s Minutemen and causing breaks within the Scared Timeline, risking a Multiverse event. While wanting to close the case in order to further their own careers within the TVA, they end up seeking the help from the least expected person, another Loki Variant who is trying to keep from being reset. Forming an unlikely alliance, all three race to catch the fugitive to further their own goals.
Tumblr media
Hunter B-15 was pissed.
Pissed at Agent Mobius for requesting to question the Loki Variant, at the Variant for making a fool of herself, and at herself for not pruning the damn bastard the very first chance she had. She would have gone back and given Mobius a piece of her mind, but her ego was bruised, and she did not want to worsen it by going near the Variant again so soon.
However, she was still on a warpath to mend her ego and she couldn’t really go to their superior seeing as Judge Renslayer had a soft spot for Mobius. So, instead, she was headed to the next best person to rip into Mobius, Agent Y/n L/n.
B-15 knew Agent L/n would love to yell at Mobius as he stole the Loki Variant case from them to further his own career.
“Agent L/n, we have a problem,” B-15 said, walking up to the agent’s desk and dropping a thick file on top of the one they were currently hunched over.
The agent let out a sign, dropped their pen on their desk, and leaned back into their chair, looking up at Hunter B-15, annoyance painted over their face.
“Why is Loki Laufeyson’s file on my desk?”
“Because Agent Mobius currently has Loki Variant L1130 in his interrogation room,” The hunter crossed her arms over her chest, voice dripping with venom. “And L1130 got ahold of his Time Twister that Mobius left within his reach while he left the room to talk to me.”
“You’re fucking kidding me,” The agent rolled their eyes while standing up, threw the previous file they were looking at in a drawer, and grabbed Laufeyson’s file. “Are they still in the interrogation room?”
“Yes.” B-15 had to bite back the smirk; her little plan was working.
“Okay, I’ll see what I can do,” Agent L/n said, heading towards the interrogation room.
B-15 knew that sending Agent L/n in Mobius’s direction wouldn’t do much, but it gave her someone to watch after Mobius and the Variant while she licked her wounds.
Tumblr media
Loki Laufeyson wished that this whole Time Variance Authority thing was some elaborate, sick scheme but deep down he knew that it wasn’t. He did not want to believe that any of this was true as he was told his entire life was dictated by 3 beings called Time-Keepers, none of his choices were his own, Infinity Stones were used as paperweights here, and people who didn’t do what the Time-Keepers wanted were killed. Then there was the fact that he was the indirect cause of his mother’s death, his family actually loved him, his and Odin’s death played out before his very eyes, and he was destined to be the villain.
His family loved him, and he couldn’t go back to them with this knowledge because like now and the Scared Timeline, he learned of their love when it was too late to do anything about it or in the case of his future self, start to build a relationship and then die.
It hurt.
It was also a lot to process and now this TVA Agent was asking for his help to stop a Variant that was killing their soldiers and it so happened to be another version of himself and in return, he would get something better than salvation.
This was a very large pill to swallow all at once.
“Who better to figure out how to catch the God of Mischief than you Loki? You are no other than the God of Mischief.” Mobius said, try to sway him into joining his cause.
Loki tilted his head and placed his hands on his hips, he started to say something but was cut off by someone new entering the room.
At first, he thought it would be the hunter coming back for revenge but instead, it was someone he hadn’t seen before. There was a fire in their eyes and a file in their hand, one he assumes is his own.
“What the fuck do you think you are doing?” The person seethed, pointing an accusing finger at Mobius as they walked further into the room.
“Oh, no, no, no, no,” Mobius rushed over to the new person. “You are not ruining this for me.”
He went to go grab their arm, but they easily slapped his hand away.
“And what exactly could I be ruining when are already are in the process of potentially causing more timeline splits? I busted my ass off to build this case and-”
“You don’t even know what I’m planning, the deal that I’m making, one that you are currently interrupting.”
“I don’t need to because I can already tell you’re going to mess it up, you’ve already lost this variant once.” The person raised their voice, gesturing towards Loki, not breaking their stare with Mobius.
While Loki watched the two go back and forth, he crossed his arms over his chest and used their bickering to think over the offer Mobius gave him. He knew that Mobius didn’t know exactly what he could offer him yet, it was clear that he didn’t by his vague offer. There was a risk with agreeing to something that he wasn’t sure on what he would get in exchange for his help.
“This isn’t your case anymore Agent L/n; you no longer have a say in what I do or don’t do with it.” The rise in Mobius’s voice cut off Loki’s thoughts, drawing him back into their argument.
The agent chuckled and stepped closer to Mobius, “What do you think Judge Renslayer will say when she finds out that you lost this variant in the middle of your interrogation by him getting ahold of his Time Twister that you left alone with him.”
Mobius sighed, placed his hands on his hips, and looked away from them. “What do you want?”
“I want back on this case.”
“Fine, but Loki is going to help us locate the fugitive,” Mobius turned to look at Loki, finally including him in the conversation. “That is if you will help us.”
Loki looked between the two, considering his options. If he didn’t agree, he would be reset, but if he did agree, it would give him more time to figure out how he was going to get out of this mess.
“I’ll do it.”
“Great!” Agent L/n beamed and held out their hand for Mobius to shake, “It looks like we have ourselves a deal.”
“I’ll go get you added to the case,” Mobius replied, letting go of their hand.
Agent L/n turned to Loki, holding out their hand. “I’m Agent Y/n L/n by the way.”
Loki hesitated before grasping their hand, “Loki.”
“It's nice to meet you Loki.”
After seeing zombie!Wanda vs Ultron, I had a thought. Is the MCU perhaps the only timeline/universe where Wanda realizes her full potential? I think that would make sense.
It would also fit into the Loki/WandaVision theory that Kang sensed Wanda's awakening, and that that's what he was reacting to when he was like "lol oops well Idk what comes next". It would be interesting if Wanda's awakening is actually also what caused the Sacred Timeline to branch in the first place.
So then that would set the timeline like this:
The Avengers time travel to retrieve the Infinity Stones, undo the Snap (I refuse to call it the blip sorry not sorry), and kill 2014 Thanos
Wanda returns to life, goes to Westview, starts Wandavision
Meanwhile, Loki runs around at the TVA
Wanda awakens as the Scarlet Witch, and the Timeline begins to branch
Sylvie kills Kang
The Watcher begins his vigil (which exists outside and above the multiverse so it's essentially timeless), What If...? begins
Spider-Man 3
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Right??? Am I just yelling into a void rn? Who knows
SPOILER WARNING: Do not read if you haven’t seen all of Season 1 of “Loki,” currently streaming on Disney Plus.
Ever since “Loki” first premiered in June, Kate Herron, who directed all six episodes of the Marvel Studios series, has had to pretend like she knew far less than she really does. For one, she couldn’t acknowledge that the homages to sci-fi classics like “Blade Runner” and “Brazil” that she’d baked into the elaborate sets for the Time Variance Authority — the cosmic bureaucracy tasked with maintaining the sacred timeline — were “meant to be sinister” rather than just “playful and quirky.”
For another, Herron was delighted to see fans theorizing after the very first episode that Kang the Conqueror — a character already set to appear in the Marvel Studios feature “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” as played by Jonathan Majors — was really pulling the strings of the TVA. But until the finale streamed last Wednesday, she couldn’t even hint that those fans were only half right: Majors does play the mastermind of the TVA, but he’s a variant of Kang referred to as He Who Remains. It’s only after He Who Remains encounters Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his female variant counterpart Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), and Sylvie plunges a blade into his heart, that the multiverse is reborn, creating the possibility for Kang the Conqueror to emerge.
Again, though: Herron couldn’t acknowledge any of that, even to those closest to her.
“Nothing has prepared me better for working with Marvel than playing tabletop games with my friends,” she says with a laugh. “It definitely taught me how to have a good poker face. You have to hide your hand — and sometimes lie.”
Now, thankfully, all of that is behind her — as is “Loki” itself. Despite receiving widespread acclaim for her assured, ambitious, and visually sumptuous work directing the show, Herron says she has decided not to return for Season 2 of the series.
“I gave it everything — in my soul, in my heart, everything,” she says. “I feel so proud of the work we’ve done. And yeah, I’ll be enjoying Season 2 as a fan.”
She’s quick to sing the praises of everyone she worked with at Marvel, and she says she’s “sure” she’ll work again with the studio. For now, however, she’s ready to take a holiday, and then turn to a project she’s writing herself “that’s really close to my heart that I really want to make.”
“It’s my own decision, but I just feel like my part with ‘Loki’ is finished now and I’m just excited to see where his story goes,” she says.
Before she parts ways for good, however, Herron spoke with Variety about bringing Jonathan Majors into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what she thought of the shocking revelation about infinity stones and what she would like to see happen in Season 2.
She always knew “Loki” would introduce Kang and the Multiverse…
Tumblr media
From the very start, Herron says, she and head writer Michael Waldron knew that their six-episode run of “Loki” would always end with Loki and Sylvie meeting He Who Remains at his citadel, the result of which would cause the creation of the multiverse.
As Episode 6 makes clear, both of these events were massive turning points for the future of the MCU — and Herron still can’t quite believe she got to be the one to make them a reality.
“We were just, like, waiting to be told, ‘Actually, guys, we’ve had a change [of heart],'” Herron says. Instead, Herron says she and “Quantumania” director Peyton Reed participated in casting Majors in the role.
“I was just like, pinch me,” she says. “I can’t believe I was at the table for that, because I know it was such a big decision for them all.”
Herron also decided to have Majors provide the voices for all three “Timekeepers” who are supposedly at the head of the TVA, but are revealed by Sylvie to be nothing more than “mindless androids.”
“We didn’t have someone cast for those voices,” she says. “I remember thinking, well, ‘Wizard of Oz’ is clearly a reference for us. We should have the wizard. It’d be great if it’s Jonathan. So we sent him all the art of the timekeepers. And he just kind of came up with these incredible voices for each of them.”
…but not with a cliffhanger.
Tumblr media
The most significant decision of the season, though, may be that it ends with a giant cliffhanger, when Loki discovers he’s in a brand new reality for the TVA in which Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) don’t even recognize him. But while Herron knew how this season of “Loki” would end, at first, she did not know that there would be any more seasons after it.
“When I started, there wasn’t a discussion of Season 2, exactly,” she says. “It was just that season of ‘Loki.’ As we got deeper into production, everyone was very happy, and obviously there’s so much to explore with Loki. It felt like we should continue the story. So I think the cliffhanger ending came in later in the process.”
Herron says she sprinkled in some hints to viewers that Loki is in a new timeline, like redressing sets to look slightly off, and recasting Eugene Cordero’s TVA receptionist Casey as a hunter headed to the armory in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. But her favorite bit is that the final line — said by Mobius to Loki — is the same as the first line spoken in the show, by a woman in the Gobi desert, also to Loki: “Who are you?”
“That was kind of the question of the whole first season,” Herron says.
She was just as shocked about the Infinity Stones as everyone else.
Tumblr media
In the first episode, Loki discovers to his horror that not only does his magic not work inside the TVA, but Infinity Stones — heretofore believed to be the most powerful objects in the known universe — are just inert rocks there. The revelation sent shockwaves across the Marvel fandom; Herron was right there with them.
“That was in Michael’s script when I first got it to pitch [for the directing job],” she says. “I remember being like, ‘WHAT?! You put me through so much!’ But then I thought, ‘Oh, it’s kind of genius, because it shows how powerful the TVA are. Who are these people? What is this place?'”
Herron especially appreciated how her shock — and the audience’s — mirrored Loki’s own as the rug gets pulled out from under him. “I was quite excited by it,” she says. “It really shows you that there’s a new power in the MCU — and it’s not what we we spent the last decade dedicating our lives to.”
She told Kevin Feige she wanted gender parity among her crew.
Tumblr media
Prior to “Loki,” Herron’s most high profile job was directing the second half of the first season of the Netflix dramedy “Sex Education.” She got the “Loki” job thanks to a 60-page pitch memo that filled out just about every detail of the world of the show. After hiring her, she says Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige asked her, “What are your terms?”
“This was the first time I was gonna get to hire my heads of department on a television show I worked on,” she says. “I was like, I’d really love [the crew] to be 50/50 across gender.”
Herron says she wasn’t out to fill any jobs on the film with a specific gender. But, she says, “There aren’t enough women in these roles. They’re out there. It’s a lack of opportunity. It’s not a lack of interest.”
She did end up hiring two women for critical roles that are still rarely occupied by women: cinematographer Autumn Durald (“The Sun Is Also a Star”) and composer Natalie Holt (History’s “Knightfall”).
“I felt like she was inside my mind,” Herron says of Durald. “We have the same taste. And I love the way that she talks about light as a character.”
Herron hired Holt unusually early for a composer, after she’d completed editing the first episode during the pandemic shutdown. She knew that the particular sci-fi film noir look of the show that she was developing with Durald needed similarly unique music, and she liked that part of Holt’s pitch was focusing on Loki’s identity as a character.
“Her music then started to inspire how I wanted to shoot other scenes,” Herron says. She’s especially enamored of Holt’s vision for her dynamic and foreboding theme for the TVA.
“She was like, ‘Oh, let’s have that theme be Kang’s’ — well, He Who Remains, I guess, in our show. But I hope that will go on to be Kang’s theme. That was the real fun of it is that you feel like he’s really played a hand now across the whole show, because you realize that music is his music.”
Herron, Durald, and Holt all deliver distinctive and superlative work that’s nothing like the MCU has quite seen before — and nothing quite like anything previously in their careers, either. And that’s entirely the point.
“I think for us, it was about just showing people what we could do and that we could do it at this level,” Herron says.
The episode in which Loki comes out as bisexual was inspired by Alfonso Cuarón and Richard Linklater.
Tumblr media
Every episode of “Loki” features multiple extended scenes of two characters just talking to one another, a rarity in a comic book production. Herron says that cutting Episode 1 together during the pandemic lockdown and seeing the scenes between Loki and Mobius (Owen Wilson) play out so well “definitely gave us confidence” to continue that rhythm for the rest of the show.
That was especially true for Episode 3. Written by Bisha K. Ali (who went on to create the upcoming Marvel Studios series “Ms. Marvel”), the episode is essentially an extended meet-cute between Loki and Sylvie as they get to know each other on a planet doomed for total annihilation.
“Bisha’s reference was ‘Before Sunrise’ and ‘Children of Men,'” says Herron. “And it lit my brain on fire. It was kind of weird. It was almost like a bottle episode in the sense that we’re just with the two characters, but obviously, it’s Marvel, right? So they’re bonding in this Apocalypse, which also feels very Loki at the same time.”
That episode is best known for making Marvel Studios history, when Loki casually mentions that he’s had dalliances with both men and women. Herron says that when she first interviewed for the job, she asked if the show was going to acknowledge Loki’s sexuality, which had long been established in the comics as bisexual or pansexual.
“I think everyone wanted to acknowledge it,” she says. “It was just really about giving a care and consideration and doing it in the right way. I think everyone knew it was gonna be quite a big moment. So it was just really about doing it in a way that felt respectful. And honoring it.”
Herron also confirms what many fans had suspected, that she deliberately made the lighting scheme for the scene evoke the blue, purple and red of the bisexual flag. “We knew what we were doing with that scene,” she says with a smile.
She has a lot of ideas for what she’d like to see in Season 2.
Tumblr media
Since Herron will be watching Season 2 of “Loki” only “as a fan,” she is also free to wildly speculate as to what she’d most like to see happen — like how, wherever Loki story leads, “we’ve opened the door” for the character to explore his sexuality with men as well as women.
Otherwise? She says she wants to know where Judge Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) goes to when she leaves the TVA in search, she tells Mobius, of “free will.”
“I love her,” Herron says. “Gugu used to always call her an indoor girl, which made me laugh, but she is. She’s in the office, but she used to be this kick-ass Hunter. So I’m like, Okay, well, where’s her path going?”
Herron is also keen to learn more about Hunter B-15’s backstory — since she deliberately decided to hide it in the scene in Episode 4 when Sylvie shows B-15 her repressed memories as a variant.
“I was like, we shouldn’t see her memories,” Herron says. “It’s a character that thought they had power and realizes they have no power. It felt really powerful to at least give her some power in that scenario. The memories are private. They’re hers.” She pauses. “Also as a fan, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, who is she?!'”
“And obviously, you know, Loki and Sylvie?” Herron continues, on a roll. “He’s in a completely different reality. What’s going to happen to him? How will he get back? Or will he get back? And where’s Sylvie? She’s still in the Citadel? And the multiverse of it all. What the hell is going to happen?!”
Herron chuckles at her own excitement. “So I think there’s so many questions to be answered, and so much more road to travel with all our characters,” she says. “You know, I’m really proud that I got to set up Loki’s story here. But there’s so many different aspects of his identity and personality that’s yet to be explored. I’m excited to see where it goes.”
Synopsis: After his lucky escape, the Tesseract takes Loki on new adventures--but unfortunately, his journeys through space do not go unnoticed and he soon ends up on TVA’s radar. The deal is a simple one: Become a recruit and help the Time Variance Authority fight time crimes to earn your freedom again eventually or die. Loki accepts the challenge. It would not be long until he could use their own weapons against them, after all. If only that, however, were his only concern. Least of all did he expect that with his reluctant arrival at TVA, a woman would step into his life and wreak havoc in his heart. He does not know what it is about her that he seeks her presence like a bee hunting for honey--but he is determined to find out.
A/N: Gaaaah, I haven’t nearly pre-written as many chapters as I would like to have pre-written before starting to post but I just can’t wait any longer! I finally want to share this story with you guys, I am so hyped about it! So, without further ado--enjoy the first chapter of “Pastel Blue”! I hope you like it! ♥
Chapter 1
Tick Tock. That clock on the wall was driving her crazy, it had been ever since she had been assigned to this dull office. She spent most of her time in the lab, working in midst of dangerous and highly sensitive equipment and delicate devices.
Tick Tock. She was going to smash it—with a big hammer, perhaps, or even better, a jackhammer. It was ugly too. Made of wood and obviously antique, late 18th century probably. What had Mobius been thinking?
Oh yeah, him. Mobius M. Mobius, her I-am-not-your-father-but-I-will-treat-you-like-my-daughter supervisor and babysitter, thank you very much. Granted, he was old enough to be her father, taking into consideration that in her mid-twenties, there wasn’t much need for a parental figure in her life anymore.
Tick Tock. She sighed. The pile of paperwork she had been handed this morning had seemingly not shrunk by even an inch. She could swear she had not been stalling today. Breakfast, work, lunch break, work… Tick Tock. She rolled her eyes. No. This was unreasonable. Grunting a few not so decent swear words, she gathered the spreadsheets and dozens of handwritten notes, sending the calming ruffling of paper through the air and exited the room without so much as thinking about what Mobius would think about her wandering places around the TVA during work hours again.
Besides, the kitchen and common room right around the corner of her desired destination was equipped with the best coffee machine modern technology had to offer. Hot chocolate with mint and a hint of vanilla? Oh yes, please!
At this time of the day, the lab in question was deserted. Pens, pliers and other small tools lay scattered all over the metal tables as if someone had just finished their work for the day. Some of the devices in here could cause major damage if activated accidentally or even at the wrong time. Now there was the thrill, the proximity to endless possibilities.
After turning a few laps around the tables to see if anything had changed or improved at all since the last time she was here (which would be yesterday), she eventually made herself comfortable at the huge desk fully equipped with a cup holder, sockets and a fancy table lamp. The chair was the best part, enabling her to swirl around whenever she felt like she needed a refreshing spin.
She had just pulled out her burrow from her hair, having twirled it around one of the lighter strands. Her guess was the sun had bestowed its warm kisses upon her chocolate brown hair in the summer. Leaning over her papers, she got back to work.
But it was only five minutes until she heard the heavy metal door with the see-through glass panel being pushed open, followed by someone clearing their throat.
“Jess, do you have a moment?” Mobius asked. Jess tilted her head, the slightest frown accompanied by a gentle smirk decorating her face. What, no chastising for changing work locations today? She swirled around on her chair, expecting to see the man in question in his grey suit and the signature scar across his nose stare her down with arms akimbo. Instead, he was holding on to the door tensely, right next to him, seemingly out of place in the threshold, a man with raven hair and the most stunning pair of blue eyes she had ever had the pleasure to lock her gaze with. Her eyes were blue as well—Loki’s, however, seemed to shimmer green in the artificial light of the lab. She didn’t get much daylight, all the way down here.
“M?” Jess smiled. She rose, ignoring the slight trembling of her knees as she approached the two, keeping a safe distance. Her heart skipped a beat with every single step, her chest resembling a magnet pulling her towards Loki like a powerless needle.
“I’ve told you, repeatedly, to stay in your own office.” Ah, there it was.
“I have asked you, repeatedly, to re-locate my office here.” She retorted with a smug expression, eyes darting over to Loki. Mobius shook his head. “An introduction is probably redundant. Jess, this is Loki.”
He was wearing the orange prison clothes TVA had manufactured a few years back. She had to admit, orange suited him rather well, bringing out his cheekbones and the dark hair framing his flawless face. His lips were thin, his jawline to die for. She would be lying if she denied his attractiveness. Loki was a god, after all. Most prominent to his appearance, however, were the shackles around his naked wrists and the metal collar hiding most of his long neck—a chunky but firm reminder his powers were all but a myth as long as the light was blinking bright red like a traffic light screaming stop at him like a sleep-deprived police officer.
Loki lifted his chin, allowing pride and confidence to flood his aura. Out of all the people he had encountered in this strange place so far, alterations of his very own self on an old-fashioned projector included, she was by far the oddest. Jess, so he learned, wore a colourful choker around her neck as well as two bracelets of the same kind. They reminded him of sugar pearls. If he had asked her about them, she could have revealed to him that they were indeed candy necklaces—and that she wore them because Mobius had stressed there were no edible snacks allowed at work. The elegant pieces of jewellery hanging down her earlobes, however, appeared to be non-edible. Two delicate silver charms, holding what Loki identified to be moonstones. They suited her, complementing the long brown hair and the outstanding colour of her eyes. Blue—just like his.
“The God of Mischief.” She completed, the fraction of a second after he had studied her conspicuous appearance. She added a court but polite nod. “I was kind of hoping to meet you one day.” And so she was. The rumours had spread across the entire facility like wildfire, reaching even the Minutemen based in different timelines. Loki, the Norse God of Mischief, had stolen an Infinity Stone and escaped his respective timeline—a timeline reaching all the way back to 2012—creating a new branch of reality entirely. Unsupervised, he could have caused serious damage to the very fabric of time and the multiverse. He had to be stopped, had to be captured, had to be persuaded.
Mobius had expressed his interest in getting the infamous Trickster to work for him frequently. Loki was skilled, intelligent, witty, a talented fighter and most of all, one of the most capable users of magic the multiverse had to offer. His stories of victory and defeat were known to most of the TVA and yet, they resonated with her to an extent her colleagues could never fathom. Above everything Loki had had to experience—above all Loki will have had to experience—there was a thick layer of loneliness clouding his aura like a blanket of ice-cold snow. It was a suitable comparison, given his heritage.
“I didn’t just hear that.” Mobius intervened. He sized her up like an unpredictable teenager. “The God of Mischief has retired. Loki here has just agreed on working for us.”
“With you,” Loki interrupted. “Not for you. Reluctantly.” That would leave her wondering what exactly it was Mobius had offered him in return.
Jess chuckled. “Now that is a matter of opinion, trust me. I would know.” Raising an eyebrow, she gave Mobius a challenging glare.
“I need you to cover a shift.” He responded matter-of-factly. Jess’ eyebrow rose even higher. “Reese just jumped back from 1792.”
“And?”
“He almost made his personal acquaintance with the guillotine. They’re patching him up in the hospital wing right now.”
Sucking in a deep breath, Jess took a step back, realising just what kind of favour, no, requirement Mobius would ask for. Reese had been in the TVA for more than three decades—he had not aged a day since his accession as a matter of fact—and his experience and excessive excitement over the Avengers had made him the perfect candidate to keep an eye on Loki while he was still not to be trusted—if he was ever going to be trusted, that was. He was the God of Mischief, after all.
“I’m on probation, remember? What makes you think I should cover for him of all people?” Loki rolled his eyes and for a moment, you almost felt sorry for excluding him from a conversation that was clearly about him.
“Call it an experiment. Prove to me that we can rely on you and I’ll end your probation.” Jess resisted the urge to shake his hand off her shoulder when he leaned forward to touch her in a fatherly manner.
“Sir, do you have a moment?” A Minuteman had appeared behind them. Jess had never quite figured out how they moved so quietly. Their shoe soles must have been made of feathers. In turn, the stilettos she usually wore to smuggle a few more inches to her height were loud and made satisfying noises ricocheting through the hallways when she walked, emitting confidence and even smugness. She needed that boost every once in a while.
Mobius nodded. As he released Jess’ shoulder and pushed past Loki—who did, much to her amusement, not move an inch for the senior manager—he pointed a finger at him. “Behave.”
The lab door fell shut behind him, drowning all noises from the outside like a soundproof recording room. Jess gaped at Loki for a second, her body once again threatening to overwhelm her with the magnetic pull she felt towards the Trickster, fascination setting her veins ablaze.
“You do not look human.” Loki suddenly said, breaking the uncomfortable silence. Jess pouted.
“Excuse me? I am hoping you meant that as a compliment, I am as human as I’ll ever be.” Loki frowned, then responded with a hum.
“I take it you hop timelines for him too then, fixing the damage others have done.”
“Me? No.” Jess shook her head. “I am not a Minuteman. I wish I was, trust me, but I have got nothing to do with that, unfortunately. I work in the linguistics department, spending all day translating protocols and time recordings from all sorts of languages. Now I know what you’re thinking. With its technology, shouldn’t TVA be able to translate everything using a smart computer program?” She shrugged. “Well, technically you’re right. But there’s a bunch of languages out there that simply don’t exist either here on Earth or any other known realm. We’re only human—and a computer program is only as smart as its creator. It can’t translate a language that does not consist of words, for example, that would go against the very human comprehension of its programmer.”
“Then how do you speak them?” Loki probed.
“That’s my superpower. I don’t know why I can understand them, I just… do. And what did it get me?” She raised her hands in a dramatic motion. “Paperwork. Lots of paperwork. The only way for me to get in on the real action is this place here. Take a look at this.” Loki watched her move towards what resembled a toaster, shaped like a metal suitcase that had been left open. Smiling, she reached for a shining red apple on the table and placed it on the black surface before activating the switch. She had seen the scientists do this dozens of times before. In fact, she was sure she could handle most of the devices in here in her sleep. As the small machine hummed to life, it sent a deafening vibration through the room and then, just like someone had hit fast-forward with a remote, the apple shrivelled and rotted.
“Pretty cool, huh? It works the other way around too once it recharged. They haven’t figured out how to make it work for living beings, including humans, just yet, though. This is just a prototype anyway, the real thing is supposed to help re-animate the dead for a short amount of time to solve time crimes and shit. I swear I’d get a major in science if I lived another life. My father was one. Before he died, that is.” Jess wasn’t quite sure what made her open up to the God of Mischief and tell her about her personal family drama. She usually babbled when nervousness got the better of her but this was a new level of openness entirely. They all knew her story, after all, but apart from Mobius, they all pretended they didn’t. “You see? TVA is not all bad, even if it may seem so at first. M can be an arsehole sometimes, I know. He calls our main timeline in which everything began,” Jess continued with a dramatic voice, “the Null-Time Zone. I never figured out why and he won’t tell me.”
“Because you don’t listen, Jess.” Mobius answered, holding the door open with the Minuteman who had asked for his advice impatiently but mutely waiting for his turn again behind him.
“So?” She probed, pointing at the God of Mischief with her chin, her arms crossed. “If I am to play babysitter for a while, where am I staying? Where is Loki staying?”
“Your place.” Jess blinked, incredulousness spreading on her face like a clean swipe of butter on warm toasted bread.
“My place?”
“Your residential unit is supervised and equipped with modern alarm systems, just in case you decide to make trouble again, remember? We’ll position security outside the door in addition to that, killing two birds with one stone. Besides, it’s only temporary. Reese should be up and on his feet again in no time. The blade only grazed him before he made the jump back.”
“That does not sound reassuring!” Jess stood up straight to prove her point and yet, even compared to Mobius, she was nowhere near tall enough to make an impact with her body language at this time.
“You can take the rest of the day off as compensation. Show Loki to your unit. Make yourselves acquainted. I’ll send security to collect him in five minutes—to the second!”
 ~*~
She seems familiar almost… like part of me has known her forever. It was a thought which jumped into Loki’s mind and implanted itself in his head like a parasite. A mere mortal, how could there possibly be a connection between them? But it wasn’t just magnetic fascination and intrigue. Loki felt a need to keep her in his presence much like she was about to be his cherished bride. Irritation crept up the back of his neck as he followed her through the branched corridors and back to the modern lift he had had to use upon his arrival.
He would only love to know just what it was that had gotten her on probation. Abuse of machinery for her own selfish purposes, perhaps? A prank which had gone too far and done damage to the organisation? Murder? No. Despite her toughness, he could not imagine the delicate mortal standing next to him in the elevator being capable of killing anyone.
When the elevator doors slid open again, the young woman gave him an almost sheepish smile. She hardly appeared worried by having to escort him all on her own, across empty hallways which were only too inviting to overpower her and escape. Something held him back. She did, so he realised with another wave of irritation electrifying his body.
“…the most dangerous missions they usually leave to Justice Peace and Death’s Head. Ever heard of them? They are like celebrities around here.” He heard her say just then. But Loki couldn’t possibly take less interest in this so-called Time Variance Authority. All he needed to know was that it was yet another, partially human-led secret organisation imagining with the naivety of a child that they held power over him. SHIELD had made this mistake in the past and they had paid the bitter price. TVA would be no different.
“The units here are labelled with our initials and the department number. This one.” Jess pointed at the first door coming into sight to their right and quite apparently, Mobius had not made any empty promises concerning Jess’ safety and surveillance. As they turned around the corner, they were greeted by a grimly looking security officer clutching one of those small devices Loki identified as a Taser, one which of the like Darcy Lewis had once used on his brother. He kept a straight face even as Jess unlocked the residential unit using her fingerprint and entered but gave him a provocative smirk before following her.
His own chambers back on Asgard—another life entirely, so it seemed now—were a reflection of who he was with their green accents, the countless books, the tidiness and the ancient parchment rolls on his dark mahogany desk from Vanaheim. If anything, analysing her personal living space to the very last grain of dust would satisfy his need to learn just why he felt so drawn her, perhaps.
The first item of furniture he took in was the long bookshelf towering all the way up to the ceiling, every inch filled with clearly read books about as thick as his wrist. He made a note to study the titles later. A coffee table full of empty peanut shells and a new package of peanuts still sealed neatly in their plastic bag, a caramel sofa on which he found more sealed peanut bags as well as a golden cushion with cheesy pom-poms. A drawer, a TV with large speakers and another electronic gadget resembling a fridge and two separate doorways which led to a bathing area, so he presumed, and her bedroom. Even with the overall lack of more furniture in the room, Jess had somehow managed to add her very own personal touch to the sterile residential unit.
“The bathroom is to the right, you’ll find refreshments and snacks in the fridge next to the TV. My bedroom is out of bounds. I hope you enjoyed the tour.” She chuckled, grabbing a blue leather jacket from the hook on the entrance door behind them. “Big meals are eaten in the cafeteria at certain times of the day though. Mobius wants to strengthen the team spirit but the cooks never say no to a late breakfast or a midnight snack if you ask them nicely.”
Loki narrowed his eyes at her. “Don’t you feel like a prisoner in this place?” A lackey for someone else to take the credit for your hard work, he added silently. He knew two of that kind—one being his brother, the other his alleged father. Loki suppressed a begrudged growl. Just in that moment and before she had a chance to reply to his provocative remark, there was a vigorous knock on the door.
“That’ll be your cue.” Jess announced. Loki had to force himself not to turn his head and catch one last glimpse of her as the grimly looking security man escorted him back to Mobius and, other than Jess, kept pushing him forward like cattle and yet, he was convinced he could feel her curious gaze resting on his back long after he had turned back around the corner, stepped into the elevator and even when he was reluctantly reunited with Mobius near the lab where they had first picked her up.
He was speaking to the same Minuteman who had interrupted them earlier—quietly, vividly and so engrossed in the seemingly heated conversation that he noticed Loki and his new bodyguard approaching only after his exceptional hearing had picked up shreds of information he made another mental note of using against them, sooner rather than later.
“You do realise that they’ll come after us with a vengeance, right? That could be the end of TVA once and for all, you know very well what he is capable of.”
“Let that be my concern. This is just a temporary solution—one which I am very curious about.”
“But it already—“
“I realise it already happened and that’s exactly why I’m doing this. All we need to do is stop it from happening again by observing the situation intently, stitch up the loop and we’ll be safe. This isn’t my first rodeo, Dave, you of all people should know this.”
“And what about the Tesseract? Wouldn’t it be smarter if we—“
The security officer cleared his throat, announcing their arrival.
“The Tesseract,” Loki interrupted with a glare, strutting towards them like the king he was born to become and despite his shackles, “belongs to me. It called out to me, it is mine.”
“You’ll find a lot of people in this facility who will disagree with you on that. Trust me. We’ll make sure you won’t get your hands on that cube again.” Dave snorted. “I hope you like your new lodging. Now come on, mischief maker. You’ve got a lot of work to do.”
~*~
A/N: And Scene! So what do you think, what do you think, what do you think? 🤯 I’m so excited to dive into this story! and here I am squeaking in juuuuust under the wire with a ficlet for @lokibingo, written for the square “Very bold of you to assume that you know anything about me.”
this is a promise with a catch (Loki & Sylvie, 952 words, start of episode 6) Rating: general Warnings: minor references to Bad Stuff With Thanos, references to canonical character deaths Summary: In the Citadel at the End of Time, Loki considers the offer from Miss Minutes and He Who Remains. He can't not. The words thrum over and over again in his mind: You can kill Thanos, so simply and easily, as if the suggestion alone doesn’t feel like a punch to the gut.
“It’s crazy,” Miss Minutes says, which is quite possibly the most honest thing Loki’s ever heard her say, “but he could make it work. All of it. Everything. Exactly the way you’ve always wanted. And you can have it all, together.”
You have no idea what we want, Loki almost says—a reflex, and not an entirely accurate one. Of course she knows enough to get close, because the TVA does too, even if they don’t fully understand.
“It’s fiction,” Sylvie says firmly. She doesn’t seem very tempted, and Loki can’t blame her. Miss Minutes has no truly attractive offer for her, after all—she would have to make the conscious choice to overwrite all her memories with false ones, even assuming they could do it well enough and seamlessly enough that she wouldn’t doubt her new memories later. She would still know, in the moment she agreed, that she was choosing a pretty lie.
The offer to Loki, on the other hand…
He thinks about it. He can’t not. His mind has always been like this, flicking through possibilities, playing out scenarios, weighing his options even when he knows some of them are unacceptable (although his definition of “unacceptable” has gone back and forth quite a bit, lately). And in this case of course he is tempted, because—
The words thrum over and over again in his mind: You can kill Thanos, so simply and easily, as if the suggestion alone doesn’t feel like a punch to the gut. Forget the Avengers; self-righteous as they are, they were never his true enemies, which Miss Minutes would recognize if she took two seconds to look past some of the assumptions in his TVA files. If he could actually end Thanos, somehow, with or without the Infinity Gauntlet—take a little bit of revenge, yes, but more importantly stop the Titan from hurting or killing anyone ever again—
He could save everyone. He could return to Asgard a hero—even Midgard might forgive him, if he could prove Thanos had sent him. With the Gauntlet he could fix most of the problems ravaging their planet, and then they might well call him a hero too. He could protect Asgard from the Dark Elves—from everything, probably. Save his mother. Save his father, maybe, if that part isn’t an inevitable consequence of Odin’s age, and even then Loki would have those years, to do what he could to…have a family again. He could prevent Ragnarok, even, if the TVA allowed it—and why wouldn’t they, if they were really willing to change the Sacred Timeline for him in the first place? He couldn’t prove what Thanos meant to do with the Infinity Stones, maybe, so the universe’s inhabitants might not know that he’d saved fully half their number—but he would know, he would be responsible for preventing death on a truly cosmic scale, and that would matter.
And Sylvie, even if she couldn’t bring herself to accept a lifetime of happy memories while knowing they were fake—she could live, if he convinced her to agree to the rest of it. Stop running, stop hiding, go back to Asgard, have the next best thing to her own family back again.
He could save everyone.
…except, of course, that isn’t the bargain, not really. The reward is an illusion, even if the TVA’s ruler somehow keeps every single promise, even if that promise involves allowing them to forget the TVA’s existence. Loki would have to make his decision, fully knowing in that moment that he was making himself complicit in the continued existence of the organization that strips free will from everyone in the universe and regularly destroys numberless lives to do it. He could tell himself it was better than the alternative and he might even be right, if their claims about devastating multiversal war are true. He is a prince, after all (and, very briefly, a king), one who grew up understanding the value of pragmatism. He is still practical enough, he thinks, to choose the lesser evil, if better options really do not exist.
But he doesn’t know. He has nothing except propaganda and a temptation from the same (deeply unsettling) source—and giving in to the temptation would make him little better than Thanos, with all his lies to himself that the destruction of half the universe was necessary to save the half left behind.
Well. Maybe more than a little. Even in his relatively short time on Sanctuary, Loki came to know Thanos well enough to be confident that the Titan’s motivations were no more than self-serving lies to hide even from himself the truth that he wanted the universe to suffer, that it made him feel powerful to cause pain.
(For just a second he imagines Mobius interrogating Thanos and wants to laugh, even though it isn’t really funny. It’s been that kind of day. Or week, or year, or…whatever.)
If the threat of multiversal war is real, if the constant sacrifice of variants and everyone unlucky enough to be in their vicinity truly prevents more suffering than it causes—even then, it is still an evil thing to choose. And if he chooses it now without that certain knowledge, knowing that he is sacrificing countless variants of, quite possibly, everyone who has ever existed and choosing to do so purely for the sake of his own happiness and that of the people he loves—
Better than Thanos, yes. But not by much. Not by enough to live with it.
He exhales. “We write our own destiny now.”
“Oh, sure you do,” Miss Minutes says. “Good luck with that.”
Norns, he hopes he’s right this time.
I got this interesting idea for how this season of Loki could end.
So, imagine with me, if you will...
It's the end of the season, all the timelines have been fixed, every discrepancy accounted for, the antagonist defeated, everything back in it's proper place... except one thing.
Loki realizes that he is the last anomaly and he has to return to his own time and play out the rest of his life like he is supposed to in order for the timeline to completely restabalize. This means that he's gonna have to leave Mobius and the TVA behind. It crushes him because at this point in the series, he's grown close to everyone and has had such amazing adventures. This is the first place where he has truly felt acceptance, almost like your standard found family trope.
Somehow, he had to have known this was coming; this is what they had been working towards for the past long while. Admittedly very sadly, he prepares his goodbyes and grabs the Tesseract to open a time gate/portal thing to return to his own place in the timeline.
Mobius is the one who stops him from leaving just yet. Loki starts to force out his goodbyes before being cut off.
"Wait, I have a question for you."
"Don't make this harder than it needs to be."
"I'm not, just hear me out. If you had the chance to stay, would you?"
"What's your play?"
"It's just a question: If you could stay, even if it meant abandoning your timeline and family, would you stay?"
Loki thinks about it for a minute. All the problems he has caused for Earth, his family, and all the good he has done fixing the timeline. Loki just nods in response to the question. Mobius smiles at the God.
"If you want, we can just put the Tesseract back and let you stay here as an agent. That's really the main problem, taking an Infinity Stone out of its place in time."
"You could really do that?"
"Sure, why not?"
"But what about my effect on my timeline? Taking me out of it would probably keep it damaged."
"There's an emergency measure we have that can remove your presence completely from that timeline. All those events you caused will find a way to happen without you if we remove the code. That's why I'm asking. Because no one would remember you."
Loki keeps thinking, again remembering the hurt he caused in that timeline. Maybe it's better this way, he thought. He agrees to the proposition. Mobius takes the Tesseract to send it back and shakes Loki's hand, welcoming him to the team while dubbing him Mr. Tesseract. You know, to commemorate the time.
A little while later, Loki remembers something he was shown about his future, one of the last things he says to Thor before he dies in one particular timeline. He opens up a time gate to get to that timeline.
Cut to New Asgard. Thor is hanging out in a field, probably exercising on a lovely warm day. He suddenly hears a woosh and a ding. Then, the crunch of feet on grass. Thor turns around and we see his face light up once he sees Loki, his back facing the camera and his hands in his jacket pockets.
"I told you the sun would shine on us again."
Fade to black.
***
I kind of like this idea because a) it makes true Loki's promise like the showrunners hinted might happen, b) it sets up a possible season 2 seeing as there are rumors of it being already in development, c) sets up Loki being in Love and Thunder, as well as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, and d) gets the waterworks going.
Let me know what you think!
hey hey hey, loki breakdown coming up,
so uhhh basically, I'll begine with a recap-
The Avengers of Earth 199999 travelled back in time to get the Infinity Stones to reverse the snap and they returned the Stones back to their original timelines just to ensure that there are no split Dark Dimensions where the above said reality is, as The Ancient One said, "their chief weapon against the forces of darkness".
Now, your beloved Captain America did return the Stones, yes, but because of the clumsy Avengers, yes, Stark, Nebula and Scott Lang to be exact, there were a few alternate Dark/weird timelines that evolved and remained unsolved as by the end of the movie.
Now, chief examples of these are -
The timeline where Loki used the Tesseract to escape, i.e., the upcoming Loki series,
The timeline where in 2014, there is no Thanos cause he travelled in time to Earth-199999 and got himself snapped,
And the timeline that Cap created just to have a normal life-
Now, The Loki series focuses on the first point I made, so yeah, let's begin.
The Marvel Multiverse has a section of Time Cops called The TVA, aka The Time Variance Authority, that is, these people oversee all the worlds and make sure no one screws up the future, the past, or the present and life continues as it is. Now, a background history from the trailer - The man in the lift is Mobius M Mobius, the director of TVA, and he controls everything, so he can blabber and tease Loki with no one to stop him - anyway, the TVA has an arch nemesis in the comics, ofcourse, cause we need supervillian duhh, and his name is Kang The Conqueror/Nathaniel Richards. This man, with the Collector, brought about the Contest of Champions, so we know he's no joke. Anyway, Kang is a time travelling warlord who brings his own self back from alternate timelines to work for him, this creating infinite Kangs, all ruled by a Kang Supreme at the end of Time. Now, what he desires is Chaos- he wants Time to be dissolved so that the only aura that exists is of Kang himself, aka The Conqueror- also, Judge Ravonna Renslayer, seen in the promos, is Kang's love interest- so, yeah, Kang is our best bet as a bigger villain-
So that was the comic part- now for the trailer. Apparently, the Avengers meddled in the timelines, but the TVA saw the other small broken timelines and needed someone to blame, and of course, it's Loki. Interesting fact is, they appear to be extracting some sort of timeline-setting-right work from him, cause someone is still messing with the Times, idk who but someone. Now, funny story - in the TVA conference room, they show Loki the iconic Avengers 2012 pose where Hawkeye draws an arrow and the other drama queens pose, but the second visual that is shown is of Loki rescuing Asgardian people during Ragnarok, which is fishy, because this Loki was just defeated by The Avengers in 2012, and he does not know about the 2017 events of Ragnarok.
So obviously, the TVA is showing him his future and will maybe show him his inevitable death at the hands of Thanos to get him to do their dirty work. So, as evident in the trailer, Loki visits alternate timelines, sets things right [somewhat]- So we see alternate worlds, mixed timelines, beautiful scenes, planets, it's just- hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh--
There has been footage of a fire sword- ARSON, hehehehehe, so, that's Lævateinn, Loki's sword from Norse mythology- another sword was seen strapped to his back? and I'm guessing that's Gram, Bane Of Asgard, his Truth Sword- it can force anyone to tell the truth- kinda ironic, as Loki lies all the time and HE gets a truth sword?????? apart from that, he has his knives- hhhhhh, his knives
Now, there's a hooded figure that appears and also there's been some speculation that Black Widow was the woman sitting on the bench in the trailer- but that's Lady Loki, guys, cause as we know, Loki is a gender fluid god, so he can and he does, so there's a "she" too, yay... now for the ending flight of the trailer - that is the legend of D.B. Cooper- he hijacked an American flight and stole money and parachuted, but the funny thing is even though the passengers gave a sketch and he wore typical rounded shades just like Loki does, in real life no one ever found him, just a couple of bills in the river where he parachuted- now that's where the series connects to this modern mystery, cause Loki looked just like the man, he parachuted, and when the Bifrost came, he left some bills, so yup that's another cool detail. Also the last reel is from the Loki Runs For President comic book, where Loki actually runs as a President for the USA- all of these are Variants of Loki, a manifestation of his Chaos as he navigates through timelines and realities and spreads his own brand of Mischief Magik- the new shot shows him being a diva in ancient Rome- so he caused Pompeii?!?!?!?!! we'll see- it was not a wise decision to give a god of mischief the power to time travel, sigh, bad move from TVA-
Now, my continuity opinion is that it will connect to Ant Man 3, aka Ant Man And The Wasp - Quantumania. Kang the Conqueror has been confirmed for Ant Man 3, and we know he connects to the TVA. Now, he bears an importance to the Quantum Realm - back in Ant Man and The Wasp, when Hank rescues Janet from the Quantum Realm, just before they go back to normal size, a brief glimpse of a miniature city is seen - a Quantum city - now this is most probably Kang's city, Chronopolis, inhabited by all Kangs and ruled by Kang, so he is the villian. Maybe Janet knows him, she survived all these years, and maybe she plans to thwart his plans of time domination using Quantum Energy. So maybe the Stopping Of Kang is started by Loki, but he being Mischief personified does little, so it continues in Ant Man 3.
Hoping for a Kang/Heimdall/Frigga cameo!!
thanks for reading, this got a bit too long--
Summary:
It’s all hands on deck at the Time Variance Authority when Steve Rogers sets out to return the Infinity Stones after the events of Endgame. Everyone’s taking bets on just how much damage to the timeline Steve’s going to cause as he careens through past events. Steve, on the other hand, is working out his grief about the loss of Natasha and Tony, dealing with his sense of being a man out of time, and aching to find his way home to rest. Problem is, Steve’s looking in the wrong directions and maybe, just maybe, getting mad and lashing out at Fate will finally make him realize he already has what he’s looking for right beside him. Well, that and a friendly nudge from a guy who might be just as blind as he is.
This is a major fix-it for Endgame with Steve/Bucky as the main pairing, a hint/potential Mobius/Loki, and me pretty much tossing out the canon, saving everyone, and giving them a happy ending. Written for Marvel Big Bang 2021
My Reaction to “Avengers Endgame”
Yes- I still haven’t seen this movie.  Yes I know exactly what happens in this movie.  I mainly avoided it for a while due to overhype but with some convincing from my brother, Imma sit my butt down and try to watch this.
Pressing... play!
Right off the bat, I feel like I should warn you guys and say that I have... my opinions... about stuff.  Plus I’m a dumbass about Marvel so just bear with me.
I like that Disney Plus has to warn us about product placement
Clint!
Are we gonna see little Nathaniel running around- THERE he is!
We are gonna see Clint’s entire family get freaking obliterated
Is all the rumbling from the sky or are those airplanes freaking crashing to Earth in the distance?
What if they pulled a reverse WandaVision and showed the people getting snapped out of existence in a future film or show?  That would be freaking terrifying.
They’re [Tony and Nebula] playing paper football...
I wanna see more of THEIR interactions aboard the Milano.  The shots of them just repairing the ship are great too.
“I’m fine.  Totally fine.”  Everyone ever.
I also like you see the visual difference between Tony and Nebula.  While he’s growing gaunt and haggard from loss of oxygen, you can still see that Nebula looks absolutely fine because she’s like 75% android
So between 1995 and now, what the heck has Carol been up to?
“Thanos wiped out... 50% of all living creatures.”  So like entire ecosystems are just demolished.
*anthropology major part of my brain scrambling for answers*
“We lost.  And you [Steve] weren’t there.”  HE WAS IN WAKANDA!
Wait so the arc reactor ISN’T in Tony’s chest anymore?
“Where the hell have you [Carol] been all this time?”  Good question!
*silently bops to opening theme*
For some reason, I just really want the ship radio to randomly turn on so you just see everyone sitting awkwardly as “Piano Man” plays over the speakers
*Thanos slowly cooks his food*  Faster, all together now!  COOKING CAN BE FUN!
“I [Thanos] used the stones to destroy the stones.”  ...what?
“I am...[Thanos] inevitable.”  *starts humming “Inevitable” from TGWDLM*
“I [Thor] went for the head.”  YES YOU DID
[FIVE YEARS LATER] All righty so we’re doing this
*gasps*  Is... Steve running the therapy sit downs like Sam did in “The Winter Soldier”?  That’s awesome.  I really like this tidbit.
I’m also really liking Alan Silvestri’s score for this so far
I’m really trying not to nitpick but I feel like it would take more than 5 years for greenery to just completely overtake a suburban neighborhood
Also wow pre COVID life looks great you guys
“There’s a part of me that doesn’t even wanna find him.”  Are they talking about... Clint?  Is Clint just going the full vigilante route?
DOES HE KILL PEOPLE?!?
I really like Steve and Natasha’s friendship in these movies but for some reason I don’t feel like we get enough of Natasha for me to get behind her on an emotional standpoint
Are they gonna use the quantum realm to jumpstart the multiverse for Phase 4?
Also speaking of multiverse, I honestly really don’t want Spiderman:  No Way Home or Wandavision to get too cluttered by that
I like Tony’s lake house.  And he got a whole vegetable garden going too.  Kudos!
The little kid who plays Morgan Stark is adorable
“Not if we strictly follow the rules of time travel.”  Which we obviously won’t.
“We’re gonna need a really big brain.”  So where the [expletive] is Banner?
“Stranger danger.”  *snorts*
“Dab!”  *rolls eyes*
So is the whole Professor Hulk thing permanent?  I know he’s gonna be in the She-Hulk show but I’m wondering how they’re gonna tackle that.  And they’re gonna have Tim Roth too!
*smiles when Tony takes Morgan to bed*
Steve Rogers here [when they do the first time travel tests] is a Look ™
Maybe don’t let the GIANT GREEN MAN keep pressing a bunch of tiny tiny important buttons on a dashboard
*laughs at Steve shaking his head in disbelief when they finally bring Scott back*
*Tony’s car races toward the Avengers base*  NYOOOMMMM
*Tony rolls down his window*  It’s Britney, bitch
“And maybe not die trying.”  And you definitely will.
This whole bit where Scott keeps losing his dorito only to get another one from Bruce feels like a Doritos commercial.
*jams out to "Supersonic Rocket Ship by The Kinks*
Did they just keep reducing the green pigment for Hulk or what?
*sighs when they reveal Fat!Thor*
MIEK’S ALIVE!
Please tell me Noobmaster69 is Kid Loki, whom we meet in the Loki series
“Don’t... say that name.”  “Yeah we actually don’t say that name here.”  I like this.  I like that Thor has so much resentment for killing Thanos at the wrong time and that he felt that could have done better cause he’s A GOD.  So the fact that THANOS was on equal level and BEAT HIM-
Hawkeye’s killing people
This sword fight’s great [between the Yakuza person and Clint]
WHY DIDN’T THEY BUILD ON THIS [Clint and Natasha’s connection] ???
*laughs when Rhodey suggests killing baby Thanos*
These shots of Clint going through the Quantum Realm looks like something straight out of Andy Park’s concept art and that’s awesome
“Well I [Scott] haven’t [encountered an Infinity Stone] but I don’t even know what the hell you’re all talking about.”  *snorts*
“The Aether, firstly, is not a stone.”  Thank you!
The little glance Nebula gives after Thor mentions the Dark Elves just make me think that somewhere down the road, she has either A) encountered them or B) has encountered other Asgardians besides Thor
“Guys if you pick the right year, there are three stones in New York.”  “Shut the front door.”  *laughs*
Also underrated trio:  Steve, Natasha, and Bruce.  Gimme more.
Wait a minute, in 2012, Doctor Strange wasn’t active yet.  So are they gonna go see- OOOOOOOHHHHHH
[NEW YORK 2012] Oh here we go
*cracks up when Bruce very half-assedly smashes stuff on the street*
“I’m looking for Doctor Strange.”  “You’re about five years too early.”  Wait a minute.
HOW DOES SHE [the Ancient One] KNOW?!?
*giggles at Thor and Rocket sneaking in the background with a bored Loki in focus*
“That’s my [Thor’s] mother.  She dies today.”  I love this scene already.
Also WHY IS THOR- or the Thor films in general- have like the most well written characters in the whole canon?
It’s those movies, Guardians 2, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, aaand.... I can’t think of any more of them.
Oh yeah and WANDAVISION cause THAT HIT ME LIKE A TRUCK-
Rocket just said he thinks of the Guardians as his family I’m gonna die...
What about their [Natasha and Rhodey’s] friendship?!?  I want more of that!
“Ronan’s obsession... clouds his judgment.”  ...HUH
*Thanos uses his sword to lift up Nebula’s chin*  Aw heck no
“As far as I’m concerned, that’s America’s ass.”  *has to take a second before nodding in agreement*
Wait is that Jasper Stillwell?
“Flick me.”  That bit alone could be taken out of context
“We’re in route to Doctor List.”  Who’s Doctor List?  Is that a code name?
“Hail Hydra.”  THE BASTARDS WENT AND DID IT
Please tell me this hand off scene is gonna be the opening for the Loki show.  Please tell me this is gonna happen.
*Loki takes the Tesseract again*  AND HE’S GOOONNNEE!!
LET’S GET TO FREAKING JUNE ALREADY!
*ends up quoting “Yeah, I know, I know” along with Steve*
I’m really glad Tilda Swinton actually came back for this cameo
*keeps slapping my laptop screen when people keep saying Doctor Strange made a mistake when it was an explicit point in Infinity War where he encountered 14 million other AUs to find the best result*
Are you telling me that this whole plan could derail because Nebula accidentally hacked into her own WiFI network?  Are you seriously doing this?
*Thanos and Ebony Maw scan Nebula’s duplicate memory bank and track her down*  Are you freaking kidding me?
...I have 96 minutes left?!?
“The future hasn’t been kind to you [Thor], has it?”  Frigga is underrated
So for these shots with Jane, are they just reusing different shots from Thor 2 or just footage from deleted scenes?
Can we talk about how Frigga is absolutely the best parent Thor has?  Meanwhile her husband ODIN is like “oh yeah by the way you have a secret sister totes magotes i’ll die now byeeee”
*sings along with “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone*
*laughs when we cut to Quill just very badly singing along to his iPod in the distance*
I want a bonus short with just Rhodey and Nebula doing their thing
*Nebula gets her memory taken over by 2014 Thanos*  Nooooooo...
Are the glasses that Tony wears here part of EDITH from “Far From Home” or are they like a prototype?
Also I haven’t seen “Far From Home” yet because Sony hates me
Doctor Zola?!?
*jams out to the music playing when we see Hank Pym’s lab*
“A little girl would be nice.  Less of a chance that she’ll end up exactly like me [Howard Stark].”  *gasps softly*
Oh my God, he’s [Steve] in Peggy’s office
Alan Silvestri is really killing it with this score
JARVIS!!
Wait and that’s the guy from “Agent Carter”!
Ohhh that shot’s [of Thanos’s ship coming out of the clouds] awesome...
*2014 Nebula hands Thanos the Pym particles*  Oh are you kidding me...
The CGI for Red Skull is also awesome
*gasps when Natasha reveals that she never knew her dad’s name when Red Skull told it to her*
*is super bummed out when Natasha sacrifices herself*
Kevin Feige really went and said “so Phases 3 and 4 are gonna make everybody cry” and the writers went “YES”
Wait doesn’t Cap go and return the stones at the end of the movie?  How’s he gonna handle meeting Red Skull on Vormir then?
“It’s like... I [Bruce] was made for this.”  Please someone get Mark Ruffalo his own Hulk movie before he combusts from giving out more spoilers
So Thanos used the Pym particles to time travel then.  Honestly that’s kinda genius
I just noticed that Scott shrank himself right as the explosion hit the windows
I really want someone to just drop one F-bomb somewhere in the MCU and I really hope it’s Clint because he would 100% say it
*starts singing “Hollaback Girl” when Thanos arrives*
Here’s my question;  how did Thanos acquire Nebula then?  With Gamora, it was with the genocide of her people.
“We [Gamora to Nebula] can stop him.”  LET’S GO!
[Thor uses his storm powers to summon both Stormbreaker and Mjolnir] *softly* Ohhhhh that’s badass...
Now I’m just imagining the cast just in the green screen room just hitting Josh Brolin with a bunch of foam weapons and making all the sound effects while poor Josh is just struggling under the weight of the Thanos reference head on his mocap suit
Who does the voice for FRIDAY?
AN:  Irish actress named Kerry Condon
*Steve deems himself worth to wield Mjolnir*  OKKAAYY OKAAYY
Love how Thanos is like “yes, I’m gonna stab you with an AXE”
“In all my years of conquest...”  Steve you suuuucckkk...
Are we getting the Chitauri again?
“On your left.”  *laughs incredulously*  O-ohhh my God...
*Everyone starts coming out of the portals*  Oh my God I’m getting chills
I would have lost my mind in the theater
I HAVE ACTUAL GOOSEBUMPS RUNNING ALL OVER ME.  This is how good this is
WAIT ARE THOSE THE RAVAGER SHIPS ABOVE THEM?!?
“Avengers... assemble.”  Oh my God this is amazing!
M’BAKU!
Also “Endgame” really just said “We are KILLING FOOLS TODAY”
How are they gonna tackle Peter and Gamora’s relationship in Guardians 3?
[Horn plays La Cucaracha] LET’S GO
God I’m gonna turn feral
*has to pause to scream in excitement when Wanda touches down in front of Thanos to fight him*
*puts hands on head*  OHH MY GOOOOODDDDD
They’re literally just playing Keep Away with a teenage boy.  Marvel, everybody.
*Captain Marvel destroys Thanos’s ship*  WELL IT TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH
OK I got mixed feelings about that [the girl power team up scene]
*Thanos unsuccessfully headbutts Carol*  Oh shit!
*Doctor Strange holds up one finger*  Oh my God this is it
Someone definitely tore off when Thanos pushed Tony off
It was in that moment he [Thanos] knew- he effed up
*All of Thanos’s army dissipates*  Byeee...
Is it bad that I’m not crying at Tony’s death?
*gasps when Peter reunites with Ned at school*
Wait the whole time heist takes place within ONE DAY?
“I love you 3000.”  I really hope we see Morgan again somewhere in one of the movies or shows.  Actually a cool way to reincorporate her would be in the Ironheart series whenever they make it
Even Drax is wearing black!
It’s the “We should be getting therapy but we got a TV show instead” trio [Wanda, Bucky, and Sam]
Wait is that guy- was that guy- the little kid from Iron Man 3?
AN:  Yes
So right after this funeral, Wanda’s gonna storm SWORD right?
AN:  This was finished up on 2/26 so probably YES
*Thor crowns Valkyrie the new leader of New Asgard*  I now cannot wait for “Thor Love and Thunder”
Wait Peter’s looking for Gamora!
Still cannot believe that the time travel suits are completely CGI
I know they had a body double for Chris Evans here but I do think it would have been cool if they used the body double’s voice for Old Steve instead of Chris trying to sound old
He [Steve] put the shield in an art portfolio bag...
*says “No, no I don’t think I will” along with Steve*
*silently jams out to “It’s Been a Long, Long Time” playing during the credits*
Wait and that was the song Fury was playing in “Winter Soldier”
Oh they even got the actual signatures!  That’s awesome!
