amazing that mulder came back to life not through god or science or the paranormal, not through any of the universal systems of control that he spends his life pondering, but through how fiercely the people in his life loved him. loved him beyond seeming insane or questioning the limits of the world, the way that he loves everything. skinner pulled him out of the ground because he just "couldn't live with the doubt." scully shoved her way past anyone to grab onto him, to sit and hold his hand in a hospital room for days when she knows he can't feel it, to stand in a surgical bay at 8 months pregnant and try anything (the realm of "extreme possibility" is much greater now). doggett runs through a parking garage, takes the hit.
krycek says, "we all have a life in our hands. i have yours, you have mulder's, scully has her unborn child. it's who's willing to sacrifice," and offers a choice, but ultimately they all make it out alive.
ultimately, of the dozens of people that were abducted and came back, of those that died and lived again, one remained human and flesh and blood.

I can't find the post where you've rambled about Kurt Crawford before! Please ramble to me about Kurt Crawford!
Hi hello and thank you for your patience as I answer this one month to the day from when you sent it!!!! 🙈 oops
The Crawfords was my original answer to @perpetually-weirdening's question "what character do you wish we learned more about" but I'm so happy to expand on that, I have a lot of feelings!!! xD
The thing about the Kurt Crawfords is that (unless I'm forgetting something big) they're the first clones we've seen that are explicitly said to be the progeny of abductees/the MUFON women. We've met other clones before including the Samanthas in Colony/End Game but those were rogues trying to figure out how to hybridize themselves into some kind of genetic variability that would let them look different and blend in. (they used discarded tissue from abortion clinics rather than stolen ova) The bounty hunter was after them for simply existing outside The Project.
The Crawfords are different. They're part of The Project. The first one that Mulder and Scully meet is the one they track down after finding someone is remotely copying Betsy Hagopian's computer files. This Crawford claims to be a member of Betsy's MUFON chapter, and he tells them there's a conspiracy to cover up the women's deaths. He leads them to Penny Northern, who (unfortunately) directs Scully to Dr Scanlon and her first attempt at treatment. The bounty hunter comes for Crawford #1 in Betsy's basement the minute Mulder steps away.
Crawford #2 turns up at the fertility clinic where Betsy and some of the others had been treated. This Crawford is dressed differently but Mulder doesn't know yet that there's more than one, and accuses him of having run off with the files they'd been working on in Betsy's basement. Between them and the Gunmen, they track down Scully's name in a research lab directory, which leads them to data on the branched DNA they'd already identified after Scully's abduction. But if someone's looking at this as a possible cause for her illness, maybe they're also looking for a cure, so the Gunmen help Mulder break into the Lombard facility where he finds a whole room of Kurt Crawfords.
And this is where IMO it gets so complicated and so bittersweet and so REAL. We learn very little about the Crawfords in the few minutes Mulder is with them but what we do learn is pretty significant for something that's never really talked about again. They recognize Mulder, they welcome him. They lead him straight to the drawer containing Scully's stolen ova (the first time we learn what the project did to her when she was abducted). They tell him how they were harvested, that the radiation used in that procedure caused her (and the MUFON women's) cancer. They tell him that the men who are claiming to treat this rare cancer are the same ones that caused it, that those men are actually working to hasten the women's deaths.
But!!!! what gets me most is this exchange:
Mulder: You're trying to save them. Crawford: They're our mothers.
What a thing to think, to feel, to say. The Crawfords came from fucked up circumstances and they're not really human. They're complicit in perpetuating it all by making more of themselves, but this is their life cycle, this is their job, this is what they know. From what we're shown we have no reason to believe that any of them has ever experienced what it is to have a mother in any sense other than a genetic donor. They're grown in tanks from tampered genetic material taken from tampered women without either party giving consent.
But they recognize that they owe their existence to these human women, who were violated and now suffer and die for it. And in those very few words he says: they don't want that. They recognize it's wrong. They're trying to stop it. (They are risking their lives; their subversion sends the bounty hunter after them.) It's their chance at redemption for the crime of being alive and that alone is painfully human.
They want Mulder and Scully to know the truth. The fact that they lead Mulder directly to where Scully's stolen ova are kept. That they let him take from that drawer without comment. They let him take the truth in his hand, surely aware that he might return it to her. (I like to think they hoped he would.) Because she, and the other women, are their mothers.
IMO one of the biggest elephants in the room for this whole show, although we don't learn about her until well after this, is Emily. How many others like her might there be? It's fucking TRAGIC to think about. But she's not the only thing to come from those stolen ova. The Crawfords are not the children Scully or any of the other MUFON women wanted. But they exist. They are grateful, in whatever way a hybrid clone can be. They recognize the sacrifice and suffering that brought them to life. They are doing what they can, in their own way, to set it right. Because to them, those are their mothers.
Knowing about the Crawfords and their subversion of The Project could never undo what was done to Scully or the others. But as gross and shocking a revelation it would be to know that inhuman things are being made in place of the children they can never have, what the Crawfords show us is that not everything that came from those violations are tragedies in the way of Emily and any other children like her. I wonder if it might have been a comfort for Scully to know that out of one of the worst things to ever happen to the abducted women, These Men Who Would Create a Life Whose Only Hope Is To Die have also accidentally created lives whose greatest hope is to save people, to save her and others like her. That these inhuman children the women never wanted have somehow grown to have a sense of empathy, a sense of justice, a moral compass, a desire to do what's right. Things a mother would want for her children, things a mother could be proud of. That they may not be human, they may not know what it is to be children, but they know that somewhere out there they have mothers, and they care.
I wonder if Mulder ever told Scully. I hope someday he did.

@spookyagentfmulder sent Scully gets a call on her phone. It's from Mulder. When she picks up, Fox doesn't immediately answer. When he finally does, he sounds distant.
"Dana, my apartment caught fire."
Tumblr media
RANDOM (NOT SO RANDOM) ASKS !
Tumblr media
"Mulder-" immediately she felt her stomach sink, the quiet alarmed a ringing in her ear to come to life. There was always the overwhelming sense of worry she had that SOMETHING could happen to either of them. Dana remembered too much her last phone call the night that Duane Barry came to her apartment, her mind always wondered how long the voicemail caught it.
Her teeth gnawed at the inside of her cheek, trying to find some way to keep her mind more patient than she felt. It was when he finally responded that she felt herself grow dizzy. "Are you okay? Fox-" her teeth dug into deeper as she closed her eyes. "Where are you?"

:) demily :) for ask meme
I would kill for them to be honest.
No, but whilst they’re not *my* ship, I’m fiercely protective of Demily because they’re so important to eachother, whether you look at that through a purely platonic lens or not, and their relationship is so pivotal to some of the best seasons of the show.
I love the multifaceted nature of their bond too - it’s like okay cool they bond over a novelist; they’ve both got this complicated relationship with religion that compliments the other; they love to pick on eachother and fight like an old married couple. He holds her hand whilst she’s dying and he refuses to leave her side because that’s where he belongs. He spends months tracking down the man who killed her because it’s the only thing he can concentrate on; it drives him half crazy. She returns from the dead, and it turns out the entire thing was a lie to protect her, and he just accepts it because god her being alive and back in his arms is more important than anything, any lie. The entirety of season seven is him holding her like a precious thing, this second chance, and yet when she says she’s leaving, because he knows it’s the right thing for her, it’s what she needs, he lets her go. That last moment, them dancing at JJ’s wedding, is them just savouring being together for a last time and it gets me in the gut every time.

even disregarding anything beyond s7, they literally live such joyless lives. like, the grief they have experienced is overwhelming, how could they ever truly be happy with that grief always hanging over their heads, the discomfort that would bring is enormous
well, no. they did not have joyless lives. like everyone, life happens to them and that means pain & grief but that doesn't mean their entire lives & existence are joyless.
we really only see them at work, we don't know what goes on outside of it.
they're actually really happy in season 1 & season 7. in season 1, they're getting to know each other, they become best friends quickly. the smile & laugh constantly, they tease each other. they always enjoy their debates & most cases. even when they're scary, even when they don't get all the answers. they get to know each other so well in that time and it's a gift to them both. they still have light moments in every season and you can't love like they do and be just miserable. in season 7, they're together. they're experiencing so many new things in their relationship that they've wanted for a long time and finally let themselves have. they're constantly flirting & smiling and talk about their feelings more openly than they have in the past.
and the other years, they find so much in each other when the world turns their back on them. mulder is scully's light when she loses melissa, when they close her case, during her cancer, with emily. he fights so hard for her and holds her up when she needs it. scully is mulder's light through every hard case, when he loses his mom, helps him find closure about samantha. she is always pulling him from the depths. he tries so hard to tell her what she means to him in his mulder way, and she finds so much meaning in a keychain & he's in awe of her. she's always asking him to get out of the car because the truth & work doesn't have to be all their lives are. and eventually he starts to learn and they play baseball and they dance and have movie nights and exchange gifts.
mulder & scully learn what to do with their grief, the love they can't give to the people they've lost. mulder fought for every child & family they came across and never gave up until they had answers, or were safely returned to their families. scully goes back into the medical field and helps every child & family she can. they go home to each other and they have a quiet life for a while.
yes, mulder was sick for a while but he comes out the other side more able to relax and he lives. he asks scully on dates, they go back to the work they love and it's much lighter than it was before. until they come across their son. there was pain in that, but there was also so much relief in knowing that jackson was loved. he had parents who loved him and took care of him and tried to get him help when he needed it. he played baseball. and for a little while they thought he was dead, but scully realized the moment his body disappeared that he wasn't really dead. and they sought him out and he gave scully small little gifts that he could. the snow globe, the knowledge that he was alive & could protect himself & that he really wanted to know her. he heard every word she said to him. my struggle iv ends very open ended. they think jackson was shot but scully is pregnant again, and they have a chance to be parents to another child like they always wanted. and you can believe they never see jackson again but that just. can't be the truth. it's open ended to leave room for them to come back, because the x files never gives us all the answers. because the fact that jackson is alive & they're having another baby is so hopeful. maybe we don't see them as a family in the end, but i think they made it clear mulder & scully never give up and jackson wants to know them. he wanted to protect them but he's just a teenager.
grief is hard but it's a part of life and it doesn't mean they can't be happy. it might never be pure, but there's no such thing as pure, untainted happiness. it's the human condition. we get to feel the whole spectrum of emotions and life grows around grief. you learn what to do with it. you learn ways to share the love you can't actively give to the people you've lost. but the connections & love don't go away. that love is belongs to you and there are so many ways to honor it, to share it with others and it can still be all about that person. that's what the x files is all about for mulder & scully. it's always what the show was about. chris carter was right: mulder and scully are the light in dark places. the show is all about their love, the way they love each other & the world & all the love they're surrounded by.

The Ship questions - Mulder & Scully, #15. 🤩👽
I was so excited when I got this ask! I haven't written for Moose and Squirrel in ages. Thank you, friend.
I hope you enjoy. This is what I came up with.
Based on this prompt list (I'm still taking requests!)
Scully watched he scenery slide by in green/blue flashes. They’d been driving for ages. Her tattoo itched, but she couldn’t discreetly scratch it without Mulder noticing, and it was still a sore spot for him.
Ed Jerse was a sore spot for him.
She couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d said to her…his rebuttal to her rightful assertion that it was her life and she could do whatever the hell she wanted. She pursed her lips, still gazing out the window as the world zoomed by. “Yes but it’s my—“ What? My what, exactly?
She chanced a glance at him. His plump lips were working on a sunflower seed. It was a disgusting habit, and she’d never had the gumption to tell him. He was spitting the shells in little cup he held between his legs.
“Jesus, Mulder. Can you toss those out the window?” Her brow was furrowed…she could feel an indescribable need to be cross with him…to pick a fight. She couldn’t scratch the tattoo, but she could do this.
Mulder looked over at her, his eyes narrowed. He made a show of working the shell out of his mouth and holding it between his lips. He cracked it with his teeth and spit it into the cup.
“No,” he said tersely. He stepped on the gas with a little more gusto, barely imperceptible, but she noticed. He kept his eyes on the road, hands tight on the wheel, little cup of sunflower seed shells stuck between his legs.
She sighed, resting her head against the window. They had hours to go, and she could use a stop…some fresh air to clear her head. Mulder’s simmering anger and annoyance at her lapse in judgement with Ed Jerse was making the confines of the car claustrophobic.
“What’s your problem, anyway?” Mulder asked her, his jaw tight. Scully whipped her head around. “I’m not the one with the problem,” she spat.
Mulder guided the car off the road and slammed it into park. He was deathly quiet. He put the cup of sunflower seeds in the cupholder, leaving the car to idle.
Scully rolled her eyes and opened the door. She paced beside it on the grassy shoulder. There was nothing but fields of green for miles…they were in bum-fuck-nowhere looking into a supposed miracle birth. Again, his idea, not hers.
She had her hands on her hips. It was hot. A bead of sweat rolled down her back, further irritating the tattoo. She heard the car door slam and closed her eyes.
“Talk to me, Scully.”
She whipped around, hands balled into fists. She was vibrating with so much pent-up anger she wasn’t even sure she could form words. Mulder stepped forward, closing the space between them. He was wary of getting too close, so he stood looming over her. He was so stupidly handsome and tall, she thought. It only pissed her off more.
“What did you mean to say, Mulder. 'It’s my what?'” She looked up at him, eyes softening a little. The sun was behind him, and it threw his shadow between them. “What claim do you have over me? We are work partners. That’s all.”
A muscle in his jaw clenched, and if she didn’t know better, she would’ve thought he was still eating sunflower seeds. But they were in the car, which was still idling.
“I thought we had an understanding,” he mumbled in that sultry bedroom voice of his. It made a different type of heat unspool in her belly.
She pursed her lips, mouth turning down at the corners. “I don’t know what you mean, Mulder. You’re not making any sense.” Her anger had abated. She was tired. Hot and tired.
Mulder, closed the distance between them, a large hand on her upper arm. His hazel eyes were darker than usual. He spun her around, pressing her front to the side of the car.
“Lemme see it,” he gritted out. “I want to see it.”
Scully swallowed, pulse racing. “Mulder—“
His fingers toyed with the edge of her shirt, asking for permission. She swallowed. “Go ahead,” she said tightly. “If that’s what you want.”
She felt the warm breeze hit her skin as he lifted her shirt in back. He slipped his fingers beneath the waistband of her pants, and she couldn’t hide the little gasp that escaped her lips.
He pulled them down just an inch, revealing the ouroborus.
She was trembling. She had her hands braced over the car’s hot metal roof. The burn on her palms distracted her from the burn between her legs.
Mulder thumbed over it, gathering the sweat that he collected there. He pursed his lips. “It’s peeling,” he said dispassionately.
Scully swallowed. “Yeah,” she said.
Mulder stared at it a few more moments before he pulled her shirt down. He placed his hand on her back, a small press of apology. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I take a lot for granted. I take you for granted,” he muttered.
Scully held her breath. She pushed off the car and turned around to look at him. His eyes were wet. Her previous anger had left her drained and shaky. She reached out and placed her hand on his arm. “Come on Mulder. Let’s get back on the road.”
Mulder nodded. His long strides took him to the driver’s side in just a few steps. Before climbing in, he took the cup of sunflower seeds and poured them out onto the ground. They were back on the road without a word, miles of green farmland stretched out in front of them.

what do you think their lives would have been like if scully got to keep emily?
if i said and then they lived happily ever after, would you all laugh in my face?
no, i think it would’ve been hard, especially at first. i always got the sense that like…for as much as wanting kids was always on the forefront for scully, and consequently for mulder, they never really had like…a plan…for how that would work…logistically, the plan probably would’ve been close to what they did when she was pregnant with william. scully leaving the field, teaching classes again. mulder left the fbi at the end of s8 and in a perfect world, he would’ve been home.
but that plan only worked because of the specific circumstances that they were in then. they had already learned the truth about samantha. they had doggett working the x-files. both of them could leave. that’s not something that would’ve been possible, back when they found emily. they would’ve had to keep going. (mulder would’ve had to keep going, and, conversely, consequently scully). and that would be hard, in taking on a child, especially one with emily’s medical needs and traumatic situation.
that’s part of the anxiety in emily as an episode, and part of what i really respect about mulder in it. he’s worried about what would happen. he thinks it’s dangerous for scully to pursue the adoption. but he tells the judge that he doesn’t have any right to question what scully wants, and that he doesn’t believe that anyone else does either. even though he knows, it would change things.
but for all of the ways that it would’ve been hard…wouldn’t it have also just been the best? they found a little girl. they spend their whole lives chasing after lost girls, and they found one. and she drew silly pictures and she was shy like scully and she only ever smiled for mulder. and they just loved her. that scene in the end, at the funeral, when mulder says that maybe she didn’t just exist to die. maybe she existed to be found, to be loved. they found her and they loved her.
i think something like this in their lives would’ve gone a long way, to be honest.
emily had to die just like melissa had to die just like samantha’s been dead from the beginning. there is no other end to this story, etc etc…
maybe they would’ve stopped, if this found little girl required it. maybe she would’ve been enough. they stopped when william was born.
and even with all of the help and the support and the conditions that they had then, where were they a year later?
