Treasure Island sketch doodles, the love of my life
Still absolutely love the doodle of Dr. Livesey and Jim snuggling like father and son, looks weirdly messy but still alright, also wholesomeness
Also doodled Jim’s parents cuz of curiosity. Jim’s mum was based on this one pic from the picture book of TI where she and Jim find the map from Billy Bones’ treasure chest. Also Jim’s dad has elements from the original novel, just this ‘poor father’ who I’d love to think as looking tired and very humble
And bonus doodle of newborn Jim with the biggest set of hair in the entire world while his parents are like ‘wOAH.’

Ah yes, Jonathan escaping a vampire lair and having a violent brain fever for six weeks but on his first able correspondence still making sure to apologize to his boss and that his boss knows he wasn’t slacking on work. I too am in my 20s, stuck beneath the heel of capitalism, and have anxiety.

I handed to him the sealed letter which Mr. Hawkins had entrusted to me. He opened it and read it gravely; then, with a charming smile, he handed it to me to read. One passage of it, at least, gave me a thrill of pleasure.
"I must regret that an attack of gout, from which malady I am a constant sufferer, forbids absolutely any travelling on my part for some time to come; but I am happy to say I can send a sufficient substitute, one in whom I have every possible confidence. He is a young man, full of energy and talent in his own way, and of a very faithful disposition. He is discreet and silent, and has grown into manhood in my service. He shall be ready to attend on you when you will during his stay, and shall take your instructions in all matters."
Inspired by this post looking through Dracula's earlier letter to Jonathan, let's see what the Count might take from this section of Mr. Hawkins' letter.
Red = Jonathan is young, has only worked for Mr. Hawkins so far. He's only recently grown into manhood. He's likely to be a little bit naive and inexperienced, easier to toy with.
Orange = Jonathan may not look it at first glance, but he has great drive and he is smart. Not only will he be able to competently answer Dracula's questions and assist him with the work he's officially here for, but this means he's more likely able to endure a good deal of torment before breaking down completely. He'll be entertaining for a while to come.
Green = He will try his best to complete this job, even if just out of loyalty. He won't speak up for himself. How much pushing will it take to break his silence?
Blue = He's going to do what Dracula wants. Whatever he wants. He's obedient. How far can that be pushed? What kinds of unexplained orders will he follow?
Like... Dracula was expecting Mr. Hawkins. He would probably still have fun/use him as a resource as planned, but an old, experienced lawyer who is no longer in the prime of his life wouldn't be nearly as interesting for him, or for nearly as long. We see what his tastes run towards later... and Jonathan fits them all perfectly. No wonder he smiled so charmingly after reading this.
From Dracula's perspective, this description of Jonathan is more and more exciting. It absolutely gives him an idea of the kind of guest he has even beyond what he's already learned/confirming some things he's seen (Jonathan didn't speak up in the ride to the castle even when it was obviously not a straight trip there. He tried to save the driver from the wolves.), and it's all the sort of information that will make Dracula eager to test Jonathan. To see how far he can push him, to draw this out as slow as possible.
I don't think Jonathan was the only one here who felt " a thrill of pleasure" reading Mr. Hawkins' letter.

by this post I write for him to Mr. Peter Hawkins, Exeter, to say, with his dutiful respects, that he is sorry for his delay, and that all of his work is completed. -Sister Agatha, August 12
I wanna dissect Jonthan's words so bad.
He sends his love to Mina ("he wishes me to convey his love") but to Mr Hawkins, who he once had called second father, he is sending "his dutiful respects".
He is saying sorry for the delay, but the work is complete! That's the important thing, not that he's well! ''Don't worry, I completed your assigned task! I did good! I am sorry it took a while! I shall return for more work soon! Please send me money for my trip back and so those people can keep taking care of people like me!''
I believe that while Jonathan sees him as a fatherly figure he didn't have, he recognizes that their relationship is one of employer/benefactor and employee. Hence why he has said
"What could I do but bow acceptance? It was Mr. Hawkins’s interest, not mine, and I had to think of him, not myself;"

Van Helsing: Ah, John. It is a sad thing to ask, but, have you put your affairs in order? Seward: Yes. In the event of my untimely death, I'm leaving all of my worldly possessions to me. Van Helsing: ...to Mina? Seward: No, to myself. If I die and become a vampire, I should still want all my things, I would think. Seward: It's a funny old loophole. Mr. Harker said he'd never had to consider it before while studying law.

It's been exactly one year today since I first watched treasure island in it's entirety. It's so crazy to me because it feels like it was only a couple months ago. Nevertheless, I drew some silly sailors to celebrate. Even though the Mr Stick disease has melted my brain I still have a special place in my heart for these silly cartoon men

Captain Jim Hawkins Headcanons
Hello hello! I adore writing about Jim Hawkins. Despite the awkward design of him in The Battle at Procyon video game, I have loved exploring his future as a captain. Here are a few of my Captain Jim Hawkins headcanons:
Jim takes risks with his ship and crew on missions. While other Naval Officers would follow protocol to the letter, Jim throws the rule book out the window. This leads to others thinking he's rash and incompetent. In reality, the risks Jim takes are perfectly calculated. He would never put his crew in unnecessary danger for his own ego. He weighs the odds which is why his gambles typically pay off.
He's a young captain. Despite his fellow crew being trained to serve their commanding officer, some can't help but passive-aggressively talk down to Jim. When meeting with base command, Jim will occasionally run into an Admiral or two with more years in the field who see Jim as 'too inexperienced'. While this irritates Jim, he converts the frustration into a drive. He goes out there and rattles the stars despite how people treat him.
He was issued a standard Naval Officer tricorn hat upon graduation, but he never wears it because he prefers the wind in his hair while out among the stars.
He takes great care to oversee his lines and tackle. He's not about to repeat the fear of losing a crew to a lifeline failure.
Sometimes he takes the longboats out on a test run, and the rest of his crew all refuse to join him because of that one time with that one stunt...you know...Jim being Jim.
At first the crew aren't sure how to react around their young captain with his pink shape shifting companion, but Morph quickly becomes a favorite. An annoying favorite, but a favorite nonetheless. Sometimes Jim asks Morph to report in on how the crew are handling their emotions because morale is just as important as a job well-done aboard ship. Morph keeps people in higher spirits on those long or heartless missions.
Mister Onyx is Jim's best friend from the Academy for good reason. Whenever Jim's own emotions are bubbling over or impacting his command of his ship, Onyx acts as an anchor. He essentially forces Jim to sit down and take a breather. He also keeps Jim from making decisions that serve only Jim's passing whimsy and not the collective.
I'll think of more soon, but just my initial first post woo!

Four magical scenes set in open water, where light has a diminished reach.
Our Flag Means Death — As Edward “Blackbeard” Teach lingers in the open water, before him is a vision of his lover Stede Bonnet, trident in hand, as a merman with a fabulous goldfish-like tail.
Mr. Queen — Jang Bong-hwan is held and kissed by a princess, Kim So-yong (later Queen Cheol-in), who had swum to him from out of nowhere. A green aurora-like light forms a wide circle around the two.
The Shape of Water — The Asset kisses Eliza Esposito, whose red dress opens up in the water while her left shoe drifts away from her foot. Not that she needs it any longer.
Swiss Army Man — Hank discovers a bit of a win-win upon kissing the lips of the undead Manny, who bubbles with air through a grin.

Maybe I was trying to write something involving Phil when I felt the urge for a quick sketch. Maybe. This information is unconfirmed and unofficial.

man i skipped ahead to reread the july 26th entry where mina receives the forwarded letter from jonathan & like. the thing about hawkins is like. okay so in theory he should receive jonathan's june 19th letter today, or maybe by tomorrow morning, but definitely around now based on expected postage times. except that in about a month from now he's going to write mina that this letter from jonathan has only just arrived, & we know it's the june 19th letter specifically bc jonathan described the contents of all the letters & mina briefly describes the contents of the one she was forwarded & this is how it lines up. but mina doesn't mention the apparent discrepancy in dates, & we also don't know much about what was in hawkins' letter to mina. we know mina wrote to hawkins first, asking if he'd heard anything bc she was getting worried, & he writes back "oh well what do you know this letter just arrived" but like. does he say anything about how the letter must have been delayed? does he add anything about how it's kind of worrying that jonathan hasn't materialized in the four weeks since this "hey i'm starting home tomorrow" letter was written? surely mina, writing about how worried & uneasy she's feeling, would have mentioned it if hawkins was also worried. but surely she'd have mentioned if he wasn't worried, as a counterpoint to her own feelings, like she repeatedly does later on in the story. did hawkins just not say anything either way about jonathan coming home, just literally passed on the letter with a note about when it arrived & let her draw her own conclusions? did he express worry & mina's just not writing that down bc it makes the situation feel a little too real? mina doesn't write anything about the letter getting delayed either, but she only discusses its contents, nothing about when it was sent or when, based on that, she expects jonathan to be back in england. why does she never write anything about when she expects jonathan should back in england, especially when it seems like he's probably overdue by then? for that matter, why does hawkins never pass on the follow-up june 29th letter which implies that jonathan's been delayed in bistritz for ten days? did he not receive it for whatever reason? even if he didn't, mina hears absolutely nothing from hawkins until he forwards sister agatha's letter to her nearly a whole month later, what's the deal with the radio silence from him when mina's clearly worried & jonathan's clearly overdue? what did he write in his letter to her?
on the other hand the problem with the dates could just be a minor timeline error on bram stoker's part, & whatever details don't quite line up are bc this was just a transitory part of the novel which was never meant to be scrutinized at this level.
