My favorite Nutcracker movies:
The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (1978)
Tumblr media
A short British stop-motion from the 70's. The story is not that close to the book by E.T.A Hoffmann, but it's sure worth to watch. They don't speak in it. A narrator (a woman) tells us the story of the Nutcracker. The movie starts with the parents who decorate the christmas tree and placing the presents under the tree. In this version Fritz is the oldest of the two children. Some movies use Fritz as the young one and Clara as the eldest. Louise, their older sister, is not in this film. The family invites their friends for a dinner and suddenly uncle Drosselmeyer arrives with a huge box. A big golden castle with marching soldiers and dancing ballerina's. But Clara is not interested in it, she wants the nutcracker that hangs in their christmas tree. Fritz of course steals the nutcracker from his sister and he drops the nutcracker on the floor. The parents are really mad at their son and uncle Drosselmeyer intervenes before it get worse. He tells everyone the tale of the nutcracker who was a prince that was cursed by the evil Mouse Queen. Clara falls in love with the story, believing that her nutcracker could really be a prince. When dinner is ready, Fritz decide to prank his sister and puts the nutcracker on the top on the castle. At midnight Clara hear mice and in the living room she sees a army of mice, leading by the Mouse King. At this moment her nutcracker comes to live and he fights with the evil mouse and win. When the Mouse King is defeated the doll transformes into a prince. The castle gets bigger and the prince takes Clara on a golden swan to his castle. (This is a bit unsettled because the prince is way older than Clara). She meets the Sugarplum fairy and jars with candy start to dance for her. But is this real, asks the narrator to us, or is this all a dream? The movie ends with Clara sleeping in her bed while it's snowing outside. Uncel Drosselmeyer never had a nephew in the movie.
Tumblr media
Why does the prince reminds me of Prince LU? And everytime I see his face...
The puppets do look a bit creepy but in my opinion it's one of the best Nutcracker versions I've ever saw.
2. The Nutcracker prince (1990) WB and Lacewood productions
Tumblr media
Ha yes, my favorite childhood movie I grew up with. Totally forgot this one until one day I found the dvd in a store back in 2002 or 2003. I was obsessed with it. The movie is very underrated and not everyone is pleased with it since the movie does not have really good reviews. The story is a bit close to the book. Louise is in the movie and I think this is the only animated film with her (?). Fritz is younger than Clara. Like in the book, under some different names, Trudy, Marie and Pantaloon appear in this version. The nutcracker is the nephew of Drosselmeyer, under the name Hans, like in Hoffmann his book. The character of the nutcracker is a bit lame. He acts like a softy. He doesn't know much what happend to him after the Mouse Queen cursed him. Mary seems the only doll who knows a lot about the situation. After that Pantaloon got wounded he must go back to the land of the dolls but the nutcracker has no idea how they suppose to go there until Mary explains that they must go throught the castle. The animation is still gorgeous for a animated movie that is 31 years old.
3. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (2004)
Tumblr media
German animated movie. But it has actually Russian animated roots in my eyes. The funny thing about this movie is that the Russian dub is way better than the other dubs. How? Easy: other versions needed to be changed because of a black doll. So what did they do? They put some different bad animated scenes in it to replace the scenes with the black doll. Which makes the movie so bad. The story is about a spoiled prince who gets cursed into a nutcracker. Later, Drosselmeyer gives the doll to Clara. It has a new twist but the movie is fun and nice. The character of the nutcracker is so brutal that it makes him funny. I love his design.
About the ending. In the Russian version, the nutcracker travels into mirrors and transformes back into a prince. While Clara is on a party she sees the prince in a mirror and places her hand on the mirror while the prince does the same. He falls out of the mirror. All the guests are gasping while watching the scene.
In other dubs: the nutcracker just walks into the party and changes into a prince in the ballroom.
Take my advice and watch the Russian dub. The voices are also way better.
4. Nutcracker Fantasy (1979) Sanrio
Tumblr media
Did someone said Sanrio? Yes, that's right. A stop-motion by Sanrio. With really nice songs and music, sometimes a bit scary, with Christopher Lee as Drosselmeyer, it's one of the best nutcracker movies. The only thing that bothers me is that Clara is in love with Franz/Fritz, who is way older than she.
5. The Nutcracker (1973)
Tumblr media
A Soviet/Russian short animated movie without dialogues. It's a mix between Cinderella and the nutcracker. Lovely music and animation which is kind of emotional for me.
I don't own any of these pictures, I found them on Google.

This week’s update of the The False and the Fair is short. Like, really short. Like, less than 500 words short.
There’s a reason for the chapter length, but since it won’t become apparent until tomorrow, I thought I would also do a little “making of The False and the Fair” post tonight. There will probably be more of these as the story starts wrapping up. It’s consumed so much of the space inside my head for so long, I have lots of little odds and ends coming out of my ears, wanting to be shared. This is fun for me, but I imagine insufferable for everyone else.
Anyway, here are four movies which have in some way influenced The False and the Fair. They are not all good movies, but each one has something about it that kept me coming back again and again.
Tumblr media
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri: An unnamed violence lurking beneath the surface in a peaceful small town is named by the titular three billboards, sets off a chain reaction of more violence, and spirals out of control.
Tumblr media
October Sky: Coal mining, Appalachian poverty, rigid family expectations, and dreams of flight. Also that one shot of Jake Gyllenhaal’s eyes looking up as the cage descends (yeah, this one).
Tumblr media
The Place Beyond the Pines: Characters struggle to break free from cyclical patterns of generational trauma in a run down yet verdant upstate NY setting. (Also the most misleading trailer in existence, this movie is not a thriller.)
Tumblr media
Brokeback Mountain: No, not this list for the reasons you think (I swear my story has a happy ending!). I’m obsessed with how the landscape functions as a character in this move. The mountains and wilderness aren’t just the backdrop for an iconic queer relationship, they are an integral part of it.

I wish I could find gifs of the scene from The Bells of St Mary’s (1945) that I’m looking for! Ingrid Berman’s sister character has a beautiful speech about how you don’t become a nun to run away. Like she says “You don't become a nun to run away from life, Patsy. It's not because you've lost something. It's because you've found something.” Like I vibe so hard with that!!! wish I could be a nun tbh, but between genderfluidity, schizoaffective, and PTSD? :’(
