Summary - A small rewrite of the diamond scene from Book 1 Chapter 11 (Drake’s birthday) and… beyond.

A/N1- Welcome to my first attempt at smut. Nobody asked for this, this is entirely unprompted and unasked for (except by me haha). This is just where my brain went, and well... don’t judge me too hard lolololololololol. I’ve debated posting this all week, but I’m finally going to relent and just do it and most likely hide forever. But I have to shoutout @ao719 who encouraged me, and read through my first draft. 💚 All errors in this final version are mine and mine alone.
A/N2- I am considering this a part of the Ghosted AU, but only for ONE reason, and that is to put it on the same masterlist. But this is a ONE SHOT and DOES NOT ADD TO NOR CONTRIBUTE TO THE STORY WHATSOEVER. This is literally just an excuse to try my hand at lemony writing, nothing more.
A/N3- This is my sad attempt at a submission for the @springfeverpitch event. I have no idea if this even qualifies, but they said anything smutty, soooo…... I’m going to test that theory with this, LOLOLOL. I have no idea what 'day' it qualifies under, (4?) I’m honestly not even sure what this monstrosity should classify as. 🤣🙈🙊

Liam watched Riley as if she would give him the answers to all the world’s problems at any moment; she fully transfixed him. When he paid the operator of the bull, he assumed Drake would ride, since it was his birthday. But when Riley volunteered and bounced her way over, Liam knew already he was done for; the second she mounted that bull, he felt himself grow undeniably hard.
He observed with the utmost attention. Then a particular song came on; Liam had never heard it, but the squeal that came from Riley and her excited bouncing told him she was familiar. But he realized there was a high probability the pair would get caught sneaking around, and that would only cause more problems in the long run. And, he didn’t want to be this drunk when it did happen.
He finished his shower and put on a clean pair of boxers and pajama pants before he slipped into bed, pulling up the covers to envelop his body. He lay on his back and fell into a deep slumber as fantasies of Riley filled his mind.

Bastien heard Liam’s yells from his position outside and barged into the room. “Is something wrong, sir?”
“I…I don’t think so…” Liam answered unsurely as he rubbed his uninjured wrist. “Has… has anyone come in here?”
“No, sir. I’ve been outside your door since you arrived. Nobody has been here.” Bastien reassured him. “Why? Do you believe there’s been a breach?”
“No! No. Nothing like that. I was only asking. Thank you, Bastien.”
Bastien bowed with a bewildered expression, but left the room. As soon as he did, Liam stood up and made a quick dash to the bathroom to check himself in the mirror.
He searched his reflection with intent; Liam saw that his neck and upper body were pristine and unmarked, no signs of the late-night fornication to be found. He checked other areas of his body, but no remnants of his wild encounter remained. He ran his hand through his lightly tousled hair and stared at his reflection for a long while, trying to make sense of what he could have just experienced.
He shook his head with a quiet laugh before he said, “I am never drinking tequila before bed again.”

hello, question! I really like your fic and I was wondering, could you maybe say which ones inspired it/just what fics you liked in general? It would be neat as hell to be able to read more fics with a similar flavour >:)
Interestingly enough, "Right By Them" actually had the opposite inspiration as to what you're thinking, where it wasn't inspired by what I found but what I didn't find. Basically, I've read a fuck ton of time travel fics but 90% of the time I found myself disappointed or losing interest as things didn't go even remotely how I thought they would, or I didn't like how they wrote Elias or how they kinda shuffled him out of the way for the sake of fluff or something. Don't get me wrong, there are a few I like that I can (and shall) recommend, however, my main inspiration for this fic summed up to "No no, that's not right. Here, this is what I think would actually happen!" and then I sat down, thought about it, and plotted the whole thing out.
Basically, I'm just writing the time travel fic I wish I was able to find to read lololol.
Now, I do have some inspiration, but it's mostly for tonal stuff as opposed to actual plot points and themes.
I really like "The Timeline of Thesus", it's absolutely hilarious and it holds a special place in my heart for Kid!Jon and Elias are dynamic. I aspire for my comedy writing in "Right By Them" to be as funny as some of the stuff that happens in "Timeline of Thesus"
On the flip side, I also absolutely adore "Nature Has Taught her Creatures to Hate", which isn't so much a time travel AU as an alternate-history AU where things happen a bit differently. The descriptions of emotion and tension are *chef's kiss* and I aspire for my writing for my tenser scenes and introspective scenes to be as good as this. 100% would recommend it, but it is a bit dark.
Another is "Don't Listen to a word I say (The screams all sound the same)" is deffo my inspiration for how I shall eventually write Jon and Daisy's dynamic come their S4 interactions. (I'm trying to keep things a bit vague as to events of the actual podcast/series, as I know some people who haven't finished the series follow this blog). But overall I really love this dynamic with them.
My last recommendation for a time travel fic has to be "Once More". Written fanstaically, felt like I was reading a movie. Though I must warn you if you read this one, out of everything I've written for "Right By Them" I have never once felt the urge to shed a single tear, regardless of all the sad stuff happening... Chapters 12 and 13 of this fic had me ugly crying the entire time. You have been warned.
Those are my recommendations for now! I have a ton more fics I liked but I restricted my recommendations to time travel related or character dynamic related. If you're interested in more however feel free to ask.

Of the different groups that arrived so far, this trio shone brightest. A sloth, a fae, and little kid was quite eye catching after all, especially considering the sloth was floating as well. But, this allowed them to group up with friends all the easier.
With Floyd practically bouncing across the sand, it was well timed Zuza had took his leave. He floated off and to find some shade, even if he was acting as a guardian, he still planned to relax as well. Matilda had let Lilith off her her shoulders, just in time as Floyd had began acting up already. He peered towards Lilith and began teasing "Hmm? Is that a princess I see? If you're not careful the big bad sea monster will get you~" Lilith was already used to Floyds oddness and giggled "No you won't! I'm a strong princess! You'll never catch me!" Floyd gave a toothy grin and bared his hands like claws. Lilith only laughed more as she took off running towards Cheka to go play.
Matilda gave a content sigh seeing Lilith start to play with Cheka while Leona kept a lazy eye on them. Ripping Matilda's attention back to him, Floyd tossed a volleyball towards her. She caught the ball effortlessly, her competitive spirit flaring up "Challenging me to a game? I won't go easy on you." Floyd's face lit up "Hah! As if I'd let you!" The menacing aura was intense, sending shivers up their teammates spines as the two approached the court. No matter which side you were on, there was no safety...

These are mostly my subjective preferences so I'm not saying it needed to be perfect. Some issues are beyond their power and that's fine. Feel free to disagree.
What I disliked:
Adrien's characterization. They replaced our golden retriever with a half-baked sad boi. The new inner conflict just felt forced. I'm not saying they shouldn't have gone for it but it could've been more developed, personally.
The songs. Am I the only one that thinks the pacing would've improved if the songs were omitted entirely? The movie as a whole felt a bit too fast paced. I liked that they added a new rendition of the mlb opening but it would've been more impactful if it was saved for the scene when we finally see the full Ladybug transformation
Ladynoir dynamic. Super unpopular opinion ik but it just felt heavy handed to me. The sparring scene was cute though I liked that better, but ugh that song just...no. too cheesy that's its clear they went for the fanservice. Show!Ladybug would've shut it down so fast. She's a busy girl and they have no time for such things (no matter how serious Chat's feelings actually are) And Chat Noir would've taken it! Cus he likes that about her! Ladynoir isn't cheesy. It's the chase! The push and pull! The back and forth!
Lack of Plagg. Farting and eating cheese??? Really??? THAT'S how majority of his screen time is spent? It's not that itself but maybe there could've been a scene or two more of Plagg actually being a kwami and not just comic relief
No fleshed out Chat Noir beginning. This goes hand in hand w the previous point. There should've been a first meeting scene between Plagg and Adrien as well, AND a full transformation scene. It could've been the first one shown before Ladybug's, symbolizing how readily he took on this role compared to Marinette
Zero marichat. This is petty and immature but I don't care. Let me be petty. Best ship in the love square but zero rep? Hmph
What I liked:
Marinette's characterization. It's like they put our boi Adrien on the chopping block for Marinette's sake and you know what? I'll take it. She's 1000% better here. I love the juxtaposition between her general clumsiness and her being Ladybug, a fucking symbol of luck. Her anxiety is relatable too lololol. And finally her crush seems more tolerable and not at obsessed stalker fangirl levels
Gabriel. I miss evil dad Gabriel too but I like complex characters more. He's still ruthless as Hawkmoth but at least he's shown to actually think about Adrien and care about him, in his own limited way
Tikki. No nonsense and straightforward. She actually feels like someone who'd fight Plagg with fists and I love that lololol. Would've been nice if we heard them bicker or at least interact, perhaps just their voices, once they got out of the box but that's just me
"Stronger Together". I love love LOVE how they emphasized that though both are natural opposites and naturally would clash, they need one another. It isn't just the Ladybug show. Though I miss Lucky Charm, I like that they removed/modified it. Chat isn't just Ladybug's sidekick. But she's still kinda more powerful at least the scales are balanced a bit better
Overall the movie is cute and a good watch. Someone who's not as nitpicky as I am would definitely enjoy it.

BTS: I’ll write a DVD commentary about my personal favorite passage from [that fic]
sorry this took ages, I forgot about it in my drafts 😅
so first of all I think it’s worth noting that this is in a general darklina doc titled this lol
for my other BTS fic thing I read through the entire fic and made comments through out so I’ll just do the same thing here. it’s uh pretty short PWP so let’s see how this goes…
minor thing but a few people have read this as a continuation of the canon scene set in his cabin and that’s not actually the case! with the set up I was trying to establish that it’s more of a missing scene during the rest of time they’re hunting the sea whip
also him not looking up is not entirely a power play lol he’s just a nerd
this I was trying to mimic the book vibe where extended descriptions of the Darkling just make it feel like she’s staring at him for a very long time.
I was thinking he’s poring over one of the journals
so a couple things, I always interpret the Darkling as uniquely and uh tbh sexually fixated on the amplifiers on Alina and like what they represent. he’s just really weird about it!!
anyway I also just forever find the implication that he doesn’t need an amplifier, but his power only makes things fucking worse really interesting? all that power and it’s completely useless! I think he’s definitely bitter about it.
anyway the first book also makes it really clear that she does not have fuck off insane power like him? to the point where I also doubt she would turn out to be immortal tbh! I find the implication that he’s basically manufacturing an immortal companion for himself really fascinating. lbeyond the baseline of having a very unique power, their experiences probably would not be similar at all but he’s just that desperate for them to be.
mostly self explanatory, but generally there’s not much room in the canon book for her to feel much betrayal? or sort out whatever burgeoning feelings she may have had for him before things imploded dramatically. I think in reality it’s just a writing issue sjfjfkhg but you could read it as her refusing to really view anything that’s happened through an emotional lens.
so this is some unacknowledged and unwanted hurt coming to the foreground. like “so you did like me a little 🥺”
and also that annoys her! which is why she’s more like “lololol you’re attracted to me? embarrassing! aren’t you embarrassed!” which is the trajectory that leads to her kissing him first.
SO while she is playing a very immediate petty game, he experienced a mental record scratch and went straight to omgomgomg *soulmates*
I think he is being sincere with her here. he’s just like are you finally ready to abandon your petty qualms and obey me without question and come back to my side??
I think he’s a very emotionally starved and obsessive character and simultaneously hardcore resents her for both bringing this out in him but also that she doesn’t meet his predetermined idea of what the object of his obsession (the fated sun summoner and his like immortal companion) should be like.
and Alina’s just like ………..huh?
I’m not going to screencap the entirety of the making out portion but shdhfgf I’ll be real with you, anon, I get so tired of describing the physicality of like kissing or sex. I literally got so bored I repurposed some descriptions from another fic for another ship I wrote ages ago and altered it to fit this scenario. I don’t think any of the original text is at all recognizable/there’s barely any left tbh after editing but I did need the jumping off point in order to not just be like “uh… kissing… more kissing?”
so this starts an entire bit where he’s nagging at her lmao and she’s mostly… not cool with it really but willing to play along if he gets her off dhfjffg but then he’s like “you betrayed me” and she’s like “okay hold the fuck up who made who massacre an entire city of civilians???”
anyway, more minor note at the time of writing, and still currently, I felt like the dialogue line about mentioning silken sheets was more my own writing style bleeding through rather than like perfectly IC word choices but I ran with it because I liked it lol
lol he takes any excuse to power trip. I mean he does already make her beg in canon 🤷♀️
she’s ready to go with it a little for role play/kink purposes but he’s pushing it lol.
sorry she’s going to have a fucking crisis (lol literally) after this!!!! I don’t think the actual plot trajectory would change much though. she’s probably going to feel worse, he’s going to be speaking in even more insane double entendres. but that’s about it!

Hello there friend! Omgeeee don't be nervous lololol. It's a very good show and really pretty. The soundtrack was fantastic. The cast was greattttt. You should definitely try it for sure!!! I am only nitpicky cause wellllll i thought the drama was gonna be one thing and then it turned out to be another. I do love what they did do and still veryyyyy much loved it overall but there like 3 things i mostly felt ehhh about (under the cut cause maybe spoilery but not reallyyyyy)
I didnt enjoy how the FL went thru soooo much compared to ML. The fact that her life was kinda just sadddd the more we learned about it made me go..... realllyyyyyy like reallyyyyyyy. (This is gonna sound terrible, but i wanted his life after to be more miserable 😂 idk yeah he had a hole in his heart but he was successful lol.)
I didnt like how they wrote ML's side lady or how they did the whole thing idk how to describe it...
Also the story with the son was fine and i liked the connection to the whole thing but i could have had less of it. We could have had more scenes in the present with the Leads together..

Everything you write is just so great and on point, you understand the character of Stu really well, and I was wondering if I could please get some headcanons of Stu Macher as a dad? Because I get the feeling that the kids would prefer him over his s/o lololol maybe because he would be a kind of lenient and fun parent but I’m wondering what you think <3
Oh I'll tell ya what you think anon! And thank you for the compliments! I'm glad you enjoy my read of his character. It makes my near obsessive levels of analyzing scenes with him and Billy frame by fucking frame worth it lol.
Stu Macher as a Dad Headcanons:
So firstly, I don't think it'd be a good idea to have kids with Stu until way later in life. I'm talking like mid-late 30's.
This is because Stu matures much later than most. His 20s are for sure going to be for leisure and fun, and likely so are his early 30's.
Stu wants to live that rich boy life with little responsibility for as long as possible. His parents will let him ride that out for as long as they can keep the business running without him, largely due to guilt at not being around much for him (and Stu absolutely guilt trips them about it whenever it suits him.)
And even once he's active in their real estate business, he won't be itching for a kid right away.
He has thought of it before though - mostly in passing. The idea of building a family with you is a certainly appealing fantasy, when he thinks of the fun parts.
As a dad, he wouldn't want to do what his parents did which is parent with their money. Stu's parents love and spoil him, but they were always busy and incredibly hands off. Stu grew up with many nannies.
Even though he wouldn't want to parent with money, that doesn't mean he's too keen on wanting to deal with the difficult parts of raising a child. He'll want a nanny to do stuff like change diapers, tutor, or have the sex talk with a kid.
He'll definitely be there to hang out with them though. He'll take his kid(s) to amusement parks, camping trips, go to their sports games (as long as it's a sport Stu likes, that is), etc.
Anything their kid wants, they get. You can expect him to be enthusiastic about all their interests. They wanna take archery class? Hell yeah. They wanna learn guitar? Most expenses classes paid for. They wanna quit 2 weeks later? No problem.
That's one of the worst things about Stu as a dad though, he doesn't instill the values of sticking to things and not quitting when bored or demotivated. This is funny, because Stu himself is a pretty determined person and doesn't really quit easily. He just can't be bothered to deal with wrestling with a kid to stick with something when it's easier to just let them do something else.
Speaking of quitting, whether Stu quits his killer career depends on the same stuff I mentioned in his Married Life and Ugly Side of Marriage HC's. It depends on your read of his character and how involved, of at all, Billy is in his life.
Personally, I can see him quitting. Between the business, children, a spouse, and a large disposable income that allows him to do virtually any leisure activity, I think Stu would be able to find happiness elsewhere, at least for a looong while.
The kid(s) will definitely favor Stu in their adolescence, but once they reach adulthood they will for sure appreciate you a lot more.
Stu thinks he wants a son, for the same reasons most guys think they want a son. But if he has a daughter, he is absolutely putty in her hands. Spoils her like crazy and will favor her for sure over his sons if he has them lol.
If Billy's still around, he's the cool uncle who's a bad influence lmao. The kid(s) loooove when Uncle Billy visits.
I have a feeling that Stu's kids would somehow be able to tell something is off with their pops. Like even if Stu does stop killing, that doesn't mean his mental issues are magically fixed. Unless Stu decides to get therapy at some point, his more manic moments will show and sometimes scare them for sure.
Stu does noooot care if the kid(s) are home when he wants to have sex with you. You're gonna need to be extra quiet or make sure to lock your bedroom door everytime if you don't want little Timmy or Susie walking in on you lmao.
Oh Stu absolutely laughs if his kid(s) fall or hurt themselves. In a surprising twist, he even does so with his daughter(s). He still thinks anyone getting hurt is hilarious, and as long as it's not serious or fatal this includes his brats.

i really wanna know more about their instagram life (?) lololol and ofc everyone's including their followers' reaction to jimin's post 👀
Mkay, so I think jimin tae and jk are the most active on insta, just because their careers involve a lot of photography and traveling and they have fans everywhere that like to know what they're up to. They post anything and everything and their fans eat it up. The number of followers Jimin has in the chapter was taken straight from Jimin's actual follower count on Instagram rn
I think Jin and Hoseok are also pretty active but not as much as the maknaes, they update when when it has to do with business and don't really put as much of their personal lives or daily stuff out there, for example, Jin would upload stuff of him behind the scenes shooting a movie or Hoseok would upload stuff about his dance school or music.
Namjoon and Yoongi post almost not at all, unless they're working on a project and want to raise awareness, but its always super vague, most of the time it'll be like, an upcoming album cover with a date on it for everyone to freak out about, or a snippet of a song they're working on and then radio silence for like a month.
You'll see some of the follower reaction in the next chapter, but you're trending basically. The mc is not in the habit of checking her phone, but she will, because it's about to blow up with notifications. I like to imagine that people would be so confuse as to how your only followers are some of the hardest ppl to get to follow you, i imagine that the boys following count is also pretty low, I think maybe Yoongi or JK have the highest and its like 10 or 15, and it's mostly super exclusive movie directors or singer and producers, so them following you and posting you randomly is a bit of a mystery

how i would have changed s2 of hsmtmts
obvious disclaimer but im not a screenwriter or anyth so im not claiming what i want is best, this is just for fun lololol
okay so first of all nini would still have dropped out of yac but she wouldn’t have gone back to east, she would have transferred to north bc she was too ashamed to tell anyone she left at first and maybe she still wants to explore who she is away from ricky and the others
nini could join north’s batb and this way maybe we could have some playful rivalry with lily and nini and more scenes with antoine shdhdjdj also it could have been a great opportunity to flesh out lily’s character so those scenes where she reaches out to ricky and her confession at the end of the season actually make sense lol
speaking of ricky ,,, i think he should have left the play at some point hear me out. he only joined in the first place because of nini and barely wanted to do it at all once he realized he wasn’t gonna be able to perform with her. he could have joined crew and been a manager with natalie or smth considering he rlly does see the theater gang as a second family. also this would leave so much room for ej and ricky development and bants since ej joined the av club and began to pursue film. they could have some convos where idk ricky asks ej how he figured out what he wanted to do after duke didn’t work out and ricky could actually develop some interests that arent the play or nini ,,, maybe fucking art club i mean he did p good on that centerpiece for carlos’ quinceañera.
with ricky not being the beast anymore i think seb should take his place that would be soooo good. and since seb isn’t chip anymore carlos won’t make those snide comments about chip being a small unimportant role and we can just cut that whole fight bc it was dumb and bad. we could still have seb being insecure that carlos is only dating him bc there aren’t really any other gay guys at school. in a heartbeat is great and i did like ricky being supportive in the background it was kinda funny too idk dhdjdjfj
ooh i almost forgot abt rini ahshdj okay so i still think they should break up. but in my version there’s no ricky pulling an ej 1.0 and deleting comments off of nini’s insta, cause with ricky in art club and nini at north trying to figure out what she wants i think one of them would realize that they’re going in different directions and only got back tgt because they made each other feel safe cause what they had was familiar. this could be triggered by ricky mentioning smth abt nini at yac and then nini breaks down and tells him that she dropped out and is at north and doesn’t know where she’s going. and then they can both realize they aren’t good for each other rn and have a less tragic mutual break up.
honestly i really liked the scene of nini taking charge after miss jenn freaked out cause with the character detail of nini giving every person in the cast of productions she’s in a thank you note she just seems really like someone who is suited to lifting others up. this could still be explored at north, maybe she could help lily through her issues that were briefly implied in ep 11 and nini realizes she wants to be a drama teacher and encourage kids to go off book and put themselves into their acting, something she couldn’t have at yac.
okay now ej ,,, so like i said in ricky’s section, more bants between them cause i feel like friendships kinda fell by the wayside due to all the relationships so more friendship !!!! also the scene where ej tells his dad he’s not going to duke shouldn’t have been an ending scene, it should have been fleshed out with his dad pushing back saying how he pulled all these strings to get him in and ej saying he doesn’t wanna go if his own hard work couldn’t get him there. and also more scenes of ej doing av club things !!! and realizing he rlly likes film and wants to do it OMG IT WOULD BE SO COOL IF HE BROKE THE FOURTH WALL AND ASKED THE DOCUMENTARY CREW ABT THE FILM INDUSTRY god i would love that. the only scene we rlly got of ej doing film things was at the quinceañera which made me kinda sad. uhhh also i just wanted to specifically mention how ej got mr mazzara that job at cal tech bc it really showed how he wanted to be there for people not just for gina, who he had a crush on, but for mr mazzara who supported him outside of romance, so i wanna keep that for sure.
gina !!! okay so i mostly liked her arc in this season, the only changes i would make would be to flesh it out a teeny bit (god this hypothetical s2 would have to be like 22 eps at least shdjdjdjfj) anyways besides ashlyn singing home to get gina to stay i think there should be a scene where they actually talk in her room abt how gina feels safer when shes on the run (second chance reference ilysm) hhhh and also a scene of her and carlos actually working out compromises for their choreo cause i liked that bit of development too and fleshing that out would make gina an even better foil for lily, who felt a need to hog the spotlight like gina used to. with gina’s own arc fleshed out her character would feel more whole independently from romance and portwell would be even more rewarding than it is in the current s2. the only thing i would really change abt portwell is that they would kiss !!! in the finale but thats bc im biased.
ashlyn should have gotten a more fleshed out storyline about being insecure about not being a good enough belle or the typical belle. there were some throwaway lines when north did their typical dramatics but the only two real scenes that showed it were when ash talked to big red about it and when she was telling nini she wanted to do a run in “home” bc lily did it. ashlyn should get more screen time where she has to grapple with the reasons she doesn’t feel good enough and big red can still support her but also gina too bc i would like more roommate besties interaction.
kourtney could still date howie, that harry potter shit was cute but there needs to be smth else for kourtney’s arc. idk she’s still into fashion so maybe she could be out here trying to create her own line or smth? this doesn’t have to be resolved in s2 like making a wholeass line takes time and she could work on it into a potential s3. kourtney just didnt get much outside of howie and the stuff at the beginning of the season where she said nini inspired her to be independent and that's why she got a job was just dropped?? so i think that fashion could fill that for her if she’s still dating howie cause like having her whole arc just be the pizza place kinda overlaps w big red’s mini arc abt how he wasn’t settling for hospitality, its what he wants to do with his life.
ik what ur thinking. anna, even if you added more episodes, where would u find the room to add all these plotlines?? well first we cut (most of) the seblos fight, so thats some time saved. honestly most of the time that we r going to gain is going to be from cutting ms jenn’s time. things like ms jenn’s and nini’s car ride would get cut, but mostly all of ms jenn’s romances would get cut down. considering she’s the teacher and isn’t actually a character with an arc how does she have THREE love interests this season?? like all of the weird tension between her and zack can be cut, like just some short scenes of them being competitive can stay. all of the stuff with ricky’s dad can go bye bye we don’t need it. i did like her w mr mazzara so most of that can stay i just didn’t like how he said he would give up cal tech for her, ew no that would be gone.
the MENKIES !!!! this is the last thing im gonna address cause in a perfect world every character would get a long fleshed out arc but then the season would be waaay too long and also im mostly trying to work within material the show gave so this is mostly made up of “realistic” deviations from what actually happened. lol idk what that even means it just makes sense to me. but anyways!! uhhh bro idk i thought them dropping the menkies was funny but it also made the finale really BAD lmao. in this finale, seb is the beast, east still had to deal w the fact that they’re underfunded compared to north but no one is injured, lily is less of a poorly written character and maybe ppl are even rooting for her, and wow i just realized i never actually said what role i think nini should have in north’s show. OOH she could be student director instead of lily cause lily both being in the play while also directing was weird considering omg i just checked and according to her wiki page shes a FRESHMAN?? and they let her be student director? lol hell nah. okay so with all that in mind ,,, the menkies should have been the season cliffhanger instead of portwell. east and north should both be nominated, both schools perform at the menkies, and then the award winner is about to be announced and THATS when it cuts to natalie and the end of the season.
one, this actually gives more tension for a summer s3 as we would be waiting to see the consequences of whichever school won. also i bet people would be wondering if nini’s gonna be transferring back to east or staying at north. people would also prob wonder if ej would be getting the scholarship if east won and what that would mean for his interest in film.

My first thought is, you don't gotta interpret everything in a negative light.
Not every strong reaction is a bad reaction.
I'd be a phony ass fraud if I sat here and told you with my two thumbs that I didn't raise a brow at that moment. I did.
Especially when you contrast that episode with run 112 which falls on all fours with this current situation- ok may not all fours.
But in that video, like many others, RM had suggested they form teams based on the sunglasses they wore, just as he had suggested they form teams based on the seating arrangements.
Of course he'd meant it as a Joke just as we discussed in a previous blog post. Personally, I expected they make a draw, rock papers or even dance in circles like they did in the other episode to decide who got who in the competition.
But it seems in all the times he's been paired with JM he's been supper thrilled about it. He even warned the members not to underestimate him and JM when they'd unanimously concluded they were the disadvantaged team in the game- Jin not even bothering to ask them what their scores were on Korean.
He reset the timer to 10 seconds when Jk pointed out he wasn't good at reading fast
When the time stopped and they were asked to make a team of four, he turned to find JM almost immediately as if to make sure JM was part of the four, he held on to his arm to prevent RM from breaking the link.
He was supposed to pair with Yoongi and Jimin with Tae but he didn't even try to find Suga. At least V did try to find Jimin. He moved towards JM and when he realized JK was hugging him he went for Suga.
Throughout the episode he was giving JM tips on how to cheat and shot when he wasn't sure of the answers.
Yet in the last run, he didn't seem as enthusiastic about being paired with JM- or so, he'd have us believe. Smirk.
He ain't slick. Lol.
To me he seemed, on the surface of it, either really salty about the others having Jin or RM on their teams or upon reflection, just plain ass overcompensating for something.
I'd go with the later.
It's similar to how, Jimin got the Sauna card and he'd complained about not liking the Sauna but then swapped cards with Tae so he could be on JM's team.
Or how he'd make a theatrical show of wanting to win a competition but smirk satisfactorily to himself when he loses.
I really don't think it's a big deal.
Personally, I love watching them paired up and doing such activities. It's a great way to see how they work together as partners and as a team.
It's also a great way for them to spend time with eachother, enjoy eachother, nurture their bond and strengthen their relationship.
Fanservice or not, scripted or not, you cannot deny that spending time together doing activities together is good for building a relationship.
They spend a considerable about of time together off cameras but a lot of their time is spent on cameras and at work.
They gotta find a way to make their relationship work on the work as I keep saying. All that 'fanservice' people say they are doing? That's them making it work. They gotta find a way to go on dates, feed eachother, hold each other's hands, tell Jokes, laugh at eachother's jokes, express their attraction for each other, flirt, share eachother's interests and do things couples do without inviting public scrutiny to their every interaction and invasion of their privacy.
So where they see an opportunity they go for it. For JK it's the the little decisions he makes on their behalf like choosing where they will sleep, what activities they can do together, wanting the bigger room, making sure JM wins the presidential suite, or choosing a room detached from the other rooms.
He invests in his relationship the best way he can. Same goes for Jimin.
I keep saying this whole fanservice culture is a win win situation for them- for even any queer idol couple in the same band.
What seem like a challenge could technically be an opportunity for a date for them without dispatch breathing down their necks.
A typical example would be this. Jimin said he wanted to go get Yoga with the others but ended up going with YoonKook on their brewery excursion.
The more time they spend together, on and off cameras the more closer they get and the more they get to know eachother on a deeper level.
But you have to bare in mind, they need their personal spaces too in order for their relationship to function properly.
Jimin used can be very needy in his relationship but for the most part he enjoys his independence too.
Jk has always had a strong sense of independence but he can equally be quote needy and over attached once he is in a relationship- especially when things are going great for him.
Spending time apart, persuing personal goals and interest is good for them.
If it helps, think of moments when they hang around eachother as Jikook dates and when they hang quietly in the background of videos do think of those as them having their me times at work...
Would they miss an opportunity to 'date' or hang privately with eachother? I don't think so.
It's in their dicks interests and the interest of whole production team and crew to allow them to be around eachother as often and as much as they want and can.
I for one, I'm not prepared to sit through yet another excruciating episode of Jungkook wanting Jimin- physically and emotionally. I'm still dealing with the PTSD from the last BonV four episodes.
Y'all buy me Ko-fi please. I don't intend to sit through that shit sober.
If Jk is pushing to be on JM's team and what not it's mostly because he feels he needs to spend more time with him. If he's not pushing for that it just means he or they are both allowing for space and room in their relationship for eachother to pursue other activities and interests or even connect with other members- unless of course they are having relationship problems which I don't think is the case.
Jimin is particularly good at this.
He goes out of his way to nurture his relationship with the others even on set.
He does this especially with Tae.
He'd take Tae to go see places he and JK had already been to, he'd request to take pirate rides with Tae- even though JK is available and won't hesitate to let him know, he often make plans involving Tae or even the others- in Soop when Tae asked him to go ride around the town with him he chose to stay and manspread on Jin and Yoongi. *I'm cackling. Lmho.
Jimin is a funny guy.
Now does this mean he doesn't like spending time with Tae or that he's changed? Hell no.
Hell, Tae does the same thing from time to time too. I mean when he found out he had picked a Sauna card he asked to swap it knowing very well Jimin had picked that card too. Soulmates coulda soulmated that shit in hot piles of steamy.
Sure JK lurks around sometimes. He is the resident intruder stepping on Jimin's other ships' neck. Love him for this. Lol.
Perfect Disney villian.
Tae had to drag his ass away from the kitchen for intruding when he and JM were cooking in the Kitchen. Let's not talk about him physically removing him from JM's car or all the times he's complained about JK raining on his Vmin agenda.
When V wanted to be on a team with JM this man literally sabotaged him, hugging Jimin first. It's his laughter afterwards for me. Lmho.
V needs to insure his Jimin cos at this point it's trademark infringement. Hashtag soulmates. Lololol.
Jk needs to go ahead and free Vmin.
But JM does this too, in much more subtle ways- I'll never forget the look he had on his face when he had to get off the bus and walk home as punishment. It was the most heart breaking thing I ever seen.
Then he had to hang off Hobi to get JK to leave his friends and come to him.
It's why I used an ellipsis the last time I talked about Jimin being very mature now. Old Jimin would have, clapped back, made JK pay for that outburst if he genuinely thought JK meant what he said or believed JK really wanted to be on a team with someone else.
Y'all don't see him when JK compliments other people? He stays kicking his feet under the table🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used to pinch a gurl I liked when other gals talked to her when I was little- In my defense, I didn't even know I liked her or that it was straight up abuse💀
Jimin can be pretty scary and petty when he's mad or offended.

Jk answered yes when JM asked him that. But do you really think he meant it?

green knight still in my brain and i need to rant about it lololol
just saw a review about queerness in both the new movie and the original story, and that the movie has a rather homophobic view on the Lord’s and Gawain’s relationship and the changes weren’t exactly good.
Iiiii don’t really see it that way.
Mostly cus Arthuriana has been reread and repurposed and retrofitted so many times over so many centuries, and especially now with all these modern fantasy versions of the characters in books and cinema, and I feel that this was a really fresh and relevant way of telling the story. As for removing much of the scenes with Bertilak and Gawain and their game, and changing how and why they part ways was necessary for how Gawain is portrayed in this one version.
Gawain is terrified of making choices and taking responsibility not just for his actions but for his entire life. He sleeps in brothels instead of going to mass and lies to his mother’s face about it. He sits with the knights of the round table and drinks and laughs cus this is where he belongs as nobility, but he himself has no tale to tell for himself and has never earned the title of knight, or was even acknowledged by Arthur until the beginning of the story. He rides out in the shadow of a decaying kingdom of legend because it feels like his chance at greatness is already gone before it even came.
Then the Green Knight comes and he bites more than he can chew.
Fast forward to the Castle of the Lord, my man Gawain allows himself to be seduced by the Lady. She brings to him not only the offer of release of responsibility for his oath through the green sash, release from accepting death, but also release from tension, from chastity, from the responsibilities of being the knight that he always wanted to be. “You’re no knight” she says, and he realizes what he did. He runs off from responsibility (again), but gets spotted by the Lord. When the Lord kisses him, Gawain knows that a kiss is not all the he received in the house, and he knows that the Lord knows too. Admitting that he has the girdle is admitting that he has no honor, no courage to face what is ahead. So he doesn’t, and instead tells the Lord off.
I don’t read his cageyness as disgust of the kiss, but rather his usual bravado in the face of his own weaknesses. It was the same shaky upper lip stance of when he begged for a sword, and when he cut off the head of the Knight, when he said searchingly that he wanted to have honor and the Lord asked “you’re asking me?”. Gawain is a mess of a man, full of doubt and fear and holding on to life when he doesn’t even know what he’s holding on to at all. He knows what he should strive for but he doesn’t have the courage to do his own ideals justice.
Also reminder that earlier in the movie, before he leaves for his quest, Essel mentions that he can’t get it up anymore. That morning with the Lady was probably the first time that he could got sexually excited, and it was the same time he had the sash since his mother gifted it to him, as he was leaving. The link of the green sash with Gawain’s ability to enjoy sex, and the dialogue of green as life as well as decay, isn’t by accident.
Ultimately this movie feels very asexual despite showing and speaking about sex plenty of times. Sex in this movie is less about one’s preferences and sexuality, and more about the utilitarianism of it. Sex is either pleasure without responsibility (Gawain laying with Essel constantly and not even responding to her actual confession and proposal of her feelings for him) or sex is for producing heirs (Gawain and his royal wife in the ending vision). Sex itself is never the focus, but rather a means to an end. Besides, Gawain never shows romantic feelings towards anyone, regardless of gender, cus romance would imply having to take responsability of his own feelings and attitudes, and we all know how he is with responsibility.
Was it the best choice? No, god I wish we had gotten a nice queer Arthurian movie, and we can never have enough representation these days considering how often media miss more than they land on the good side of things. Are fans of the source materials wrong to be uspet? Absolutely not, you guys would know better than I, I’m still new to Arthurian stuff. And I think the director could afford to be more direct when faced with these questions and properly explain why he decided to tell this particular retelling, considering the queerness of it. That’s also something worth critiquing.
These changes are a major step away from the source material, and trust me I love my queer knights as much as anyone, yet I still think they were relevant for the ending we got and the story being told in this version. The queer lens on it isn’t very flattering and I agree on that, but I don’t feel like the allosexuality lens is the best queer lens to look at it.

SouGou theories, thoughts and speculations based on canonical evidence
Alright, I know I am so epically late to the party just like I was with Haikyuu and TsukiYachi but I am here now and I am so sad that a lot of the SouGou shippers have...disappeared...
Regardless, I still want to put forward my own thoughts and speculations on these two because they have given me brainrot over the past few weeks.
So much like the earlier post I did with TsukiYachi, this one will be similar, except I am basing everything on the anime as I have not read the light novel (tbh light novels aren’t really my thing so...). Just to reiterate, when I make any speculations and theories, they are always based on canonical evidence, and of course my own interpretation. I put forward solid evidence so people can see where I am coming from and what I am yapping on about. People are free to draw their own conclusions of what they see in canon, so just because I have a theory with evidence, it does not invalidate another person’s theory of the same evidence...if that makes sense?
Every time I watch a new anime, I always come in with a very neutral mindset. I have a fascination with relationships (hence my ship heavy blog) so I ship characters based on their level of chemistry and compatibility.
Because I am so fashionably late to the party, a lot of the speculations below have been discussed by other SouGou fans. Essentially when I read some of their posts, they pretty much validated what I saw. So I want to credit all those SouGou stans who did the hard yard first on their speculations of these two. This post may already have what was speculated, but it’s nice to have it all in one big post. I will of course add my own thoughts and interpretations as well. So, happy reading!

Gou’s Relationship with Other Characters
Sousuke did not make his debut until Season 2, so for all of Season 1, the focus was on Gou and the other characters. To be honest, nothing stood out to me in terms of shipping potential with Gou in Season 1. I do not go into watching anime with the intention of shipping characters - the shipping just automatically occurs when two characters have good chemistry. So with Gou in Season 1, all I saw was a manager being incredibly supportive, friendly, strong willed and determined to see her friends through the swimming club. You may have read my other post on Free! and toxic masculinity, but I did mention in there that what I loved most about Free! was the friendship and the emotional vulnerability. Because Gou is a side character, we never get to see too much of her and how she would develop as a character outside her obsession with muscles. But as viewers, we get the gist of her sweet personality.
Kyoto Animation
Before I dive into the speculations, I want to point out something with KyoAni. For starters, this studio is known for its amazing adaptational works of manga and light novels. When it comes to anime that does not purely focus on romance, they are so so so good with romantic undertones. As much as I do enjoy romance anime, I enjoy ones with subtle undertones of romance even more. I have watched a large portion of anime from KyoAni and I can definitely come to the above conclusion. Although Free! is not a romance genre, there is very subtle light teasing of potential developments between certain characters. Like I mentioned in my Free! post on toxic masculinity, I will disregard that just because the male characters are hugging, crying and showing vulnerable emotions to each other, it does not necessarily mean that there is a romantic development. The very subtle undertones of romance I could see is mostly between Gou, Sousuke and Momo (I will explain more later). So what I am trying to point out in this paragraph is that Free! does have minute traces of romance, because based on what other anime KyoAni produced, there are similarities in how they portray romantic undertones.
SouGou Initial Meeting
The initial meeting did not particularly stand out to me until I watched more scenes and interactions between SouGou later on in the series. What I noticed was the level of admiration Gou has for Sousuke. Again, this was not apparent when I watched the initial meeting scene on its own. I had to see a culmination of scenes between them to realise.
Oh gosh just look at how happy she is seeing Sousuke. If you go back and watch this scene again, she legit just shoved Momo out the way and ran to Sousuke. Lmao poor Momo!
Also....

Gou just looking so happy staring after Sousuke...ughh my heart....
Middle School
Just something I picked up. When Rin transferred to Iwatobi during middle school, it sounded like Gou did not go with him. So she stayed behind in the same middle school together with Sousuke after Rin left. See below.
Because Gou is one year younger than Sousuke, the scene above just sounded like he stopped talking to her when he left for Tokyo when he was a first year high school student and she a third year middle school student...and then the below scene confirmed when and the reason...
In the above scene, Sousuke explained that he hurt his shoulder in the summer of his first year of high school, and then he heard from Gou that Rin was visiting Japan at the time, so I am guessing SouGou must have stopped talking to each other around that time when Sousuke injured his shoulder. The injury was most likely why he stopped talking to her because he knew the consequences...that if Rin found out through Gou... then yeah... so to him it was better to cut off contact with both siblings...omg my heart...my poor baby Sousuke...
Anyways, point is they were definitely still talking when Rin went to Iwatobi and then later Australia. So I wonder how close they were to each other...? They do sound very close...wonder if they walked to and from school together...omfg my heart hurts again...aaaahhhhhhh
Childhood Friends
This trope is so cute and I really like the whole ‘he is my brother’s best friend’ kind of thing. Because we all know how overprotective Rin is of Gou and if there is anyone who is good enough for her, Rin would definitely think it be Sousuke.
LOOK AT HOW PRECIOUS THEY ARE OMG. Love this official artwork of all three of them. And Sousuke has such a sweet gentle expression when he is looking at Gou...
Best part also is that subtle teasing of these two. Anime is always about camera work and specific panels as well, so it just looked like to me that they really wanted to emphasise this scene between SouGou. The snow, the Christmas tree, the childhood friends - all in one frame.
Indirect Moments
These are the moments that started me on the SouGou ship!
Gou sees Sousuke at the train station right after he has been brooding about his shoulder injury
Gou sees Sousuke at the hospital
What I really really liked about these scenes is that every single time Sousuke was having a down moment, or a vulnerable moment in relation to his shoulder injury, Gou happened to be there and witness it. It may be coincidental that she always happen to be in a place and time when Sousuke wasn’t feeling great. I was initially wondering why she never approached him in the moment and then you look at Sousuke’s pissy face and that’s probably why lmao. Regardless, Gou probably knew his state of mind, and hence decided to leave him to it. The look she gave him was more out of curiosity rather than concern but because the anime never went into detail about what she was thinking at the time, it’s hard to tell. Most important thing is that Gou was there during his vulnerable moments, before anyone knew of his shoulder injury...
Jelly Momo
Ngl, I absolutely love Momo, not only because he’s a hilarious character but because Sousuke always unintentionally cockblocks him when it comes to Gou. I just find it so funny. The poor thing. And Gou just has absolutely zero interest in him....
The thing is, Momo knows that Sousuke constantly gets in the way...it has happened several times already and I think he is also beginning to realise that Gou is probably quite fond of Sousuke, hence his very vocal comment about paying attention to him. i just love it how the anime framed it like this because you know it’s a running gag going on between all three.
Also, the look on Sousuke’s face in that above scene...you can’t see it but if you go back and watch it, and it’s only a split second when Momo moves his head, it’s absolutely hilarious. He legit has a “wtf” look on his face 😂
Just going to put this above scene here where Momo gets dragged away. Poor thing. I think at this point, Gou is catching on to something with Sousuke...
After Momo bombarded Gou with his hilarious hobbies, these two just ended up alone together ❤️
Season 3′s ending credits depict a lot of parallels between characters as well as some level of competitiveness between them. So maybe it is just a coincidence here but Sousuke and Momo together probably continues to depict the hilarious running gag between them and Gou. LOL!
Gou’s Concern
No really, when Sousuke walked out and decided to swim with his shoulder injury, the concerned look on Gou’s face. This was the first time in the whole entire series (season 3 included) where Gou showed this much concern...my heart.
When there are problems in the Iwatobi swim club related to a character, a lot of the issues and concerns revolved around the other characters helping each other (Gou would be excluded). She is just a supporting character that does not get a lot screen time. Aside from her managerial duties, we don’t see too much of her during important/significant moments for a main character - unless she is interacting with Rin in some way. So her very minimal “interactions” with Sousuke during his vulnerable moments are considered somewhat significant (even if she just saw him walking by) because they are more symbolic than anything.
Off Screen Interactions
Okay, the amount of times Sousuke talked about Gou...they clearly talk a lot off screen and whether that be through text messages, phone calls or meeting up, I believe they are a combo of all three. I have several reasons to believe that they do hang out together quite a bit.
1. The amount of times Gou keeps bumping into Sousuke randomly (ngl the times the audience sees is probably only a fraction to what actually goes on behind the scenes)
2. In the later episodes, they have been seen walking home together.
3. Some of the things Sousuke said to Rin about Gou would warrant more of a face to face conversation rather than something through text message. I mean unless they talk on the phone (that would be so fucking adorable aaaaahhhhhh)
4. In the CD drama, they have been shown to hang out just the two of them over mediocre stuff so I am sure that would have met up and talked more about other more deeper things with each other
Gou obviously confided in Sousuke how lonely she felt because her older bro was neglecting her
LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF TIMES HE TALKED ABOUT HER! That obviously indicated they do interact quite some bit off screen. Judging from the things they talked about, it sounded like she was filling him in with what’s going on in her life..and you know just every day stuff... I love it! They are so casual and so comfy with each other <33333333
Platinum Abs
Not counting the fact that I almost choked on my drink when I saw this for the first time, but I was curious to see what Gou thought of them. So I waited....and waited...and waited...and it never came, despite the fact that she was in his presence multiple times when he was looking like this....
And I came across several older posts that pointed this out and it totally validated what I felt as well. Gou, the muscle obsessive freak has not spoken a word about Sousuke’s nationally ranked swimmer’s perfect body. WILL YOU JUST LOOK AT THEM? HE’S FUCKING MASSIVE!! Like..all over....holy shit just look at those guns...like damn fine man.... anyways... so Gou, why have we not heard a single word from you about them? To her, they are probably the best of all the characters in the series ...
And my guess is... Sousuke is most likely special to her. She does not see him as merely an object of muscles (much like she does with the other characters including her own bro) but something more. And whether that is consciously or unconsciously, the outcome is still the same. Because when someone means a lot to you and if you like someone in that way, you are less likely to see them as an object of some fantasy...
The OVA
Yo not gonna leave this one out and if there is anything that really pushed this ship further, it was definitely the OVA.
Sousuke is so pedantic about what people call him (unless you are Nagisa...which he has almost no words for ...). So the only one who can add “kun” to his name is Gou <333333
I’m not going to delve too deeply into this as
1. It is self explanatory
2. A lot of people have already discussed this topic
But, overprotective Sousuke being a sweet guy and lending Gou his jacket is something out of a shojo manga. Even more shojo is that he;
1. Did it himself and not just giving the jacket to her
2. Got overly pissed off at Ai for drenching Gou
3. COULDN’T LOOK AT GOU WHEN HE GAVE HER THE JACKET....like the whole time....ksfklafkhgdshgjdsh
Sousuke isn’t very good with expressing himself, so this scene, out of his own sheer awkwardness, really played into the intimate nature of this potential ship. I’ll explain more later...
P. S. LOOK AT HOW ENORMOUS THE JACKET LOOKS ON GOU...she so schmol (and Sousuke is just massive...). Legit they look like a couple on a date...
Sunset Meeting
Ngl when I first started watching Season 3, this scene came out so unexpectedly I had to replay it just so it would process in my mind that it happened. But aside from the fact that it was framed in a shojo manga kinda way i.e. Gou running towards Sousuke, then walking together in the sunset and then talking about deep and meaningful stuff...you get the drift...I absolutely loved it how Gou was the very first person Sousuke told about his surgery’s success. Omg..swimming and the success of the surgery just meant so much to him and he was already telling Gou about it...
Everything about the particular scene was so so intimate. The scenery, the conversation, the tone of voice, the colours used......everything! Just look at how happy Gou is....
And damn they walked home together ... my heart cannot take it anymore aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
Running Gag
I did notice this trend going on but it didn’t cross my mind until I read a post that it was like a thing between SouGou. Honestly it is so so cute! Gou has this excited pitched, giggle-ish, admiration-like tone every single time she calls out and runs to him. It’s so sweet. You actually never hear it ever when she talks or calls out to any other characters in the series, so Sousuke is indeed very special to her <3
Also...something about Sousuke walking alone and Gou either noticing him or running to him...
Gou and Momo’s Mistaken Date vs. Gou and Sousuke’s Mistaken Date
In Part 4 of the Free Take Your Marks movie, Rin walks by a burger shop and noticed Momo and Gou sitting together and having lunch. He mistakenly thought they were going out on a date, and before the rest of the Iwatobi team could come to the table after order their food, Rin gets a call from Sousuke telling him that he cannot find his way. So Rin dashes off to save Sousuke still with the misunderstanding. The episode is absolutely hilarious on Rin’s part.
Then in the CD drama, there is a story titled “Sousuke and Gou’s secret date.” Of course it is a case of ‘mistaken identity’ but as I stated earlier, these two would hang out with each other to discuss superficial things, so I am certain that they do hang out with each other on occasions to talk about other more deep and meaningful things as well. Considering the things Sousuke has been telling Rin about Gou, you can make an educated guess that SouGou do have their alone times quite a bit off screen.
Anyways, so this is the part where I believe Free has its subtle romantic undertones. I mentioned in my toxic masculinity post that when the male characters were being vulnerable, hugged or cried, that it does not necessarily mean they are gay, or that there would be any romantic development between the characters. You could say the same with SouGou as well, however, the difference lies in how the anime framed it, and the biggest tip that pushed from just a friendship kind of thing to a teasing of a potential romantic thing is the “secret date” part and the running gag between Gou, Sousuke and Momo. We know Momo clearly has romantic interest in Gou, and the interesting thing is...Sousuke being placed in between Gou and Momo numerous times throughout the anime to signify that there is a potential triangle going on. Does this make sense? It is the nuances as a viewer that you can pick up, and it is even more so if you can understand Japanese. I sometimes switch the subtitles off and really just watch what they say and it’s a completely different view. Hard to explain...but that is the vibe I get.
Extras
I just had to put this scene in. JUST LOOK AT GOU LOOKING AT SOUSUKE OMG. She totally loves him <3 YOU CAN’T TELL ME OTHERWISE!!!
I always love me some official artwork of these two, and disregarding the fact that there are four other guys around and Nagisa just being the little helper he is, SouGou wrestling is something I just need to have in my life <3 I just love the light subtle tease between these two. Thank you KyoAni! And them holding hands... I’m ded...
Sousuke’s Feelings
This is purely interpretation based on what I have seen so far and of course when I am writing a full post like this about SouGou, it does help piece the puzzle together a little more. Tbvh, I strongly believe that Sousuke has repressed feelings for Gou. My reasoning is quite complex. Sousuke is a bit of a difficult character. He is aloof, serious and can be standoffish. He is not good with expressing his emotions and feelings, yet he does questionable things if he thinks it is for the best for those he cares about. Obviously noticeable when he lied to Rin about his shoulder injury, and of course completely stopped talking to Rin and Gou after being injured. But he deeply cares for those around him, and will go out of his way to help, even if it is to the detriment of his own welfare.
Sosuke hanging out with Gou and talking to her and being around her is already an aspect of his kindness, that he would do this to anyone he cares about. But what I meant about repressed feelings for Gou was more evident in the OVA, and I think that is where the slight nuances come into play. Sousuke is overprotective of Gou and he most likely sees her as a little sister, considering he grew up with her alongside his best friend. But I think when it comes down to more intimate moments i.e. giving Gou his jacket and just not being able to look at her, I think that small nuance does give a small insight into Sousuke’s feelings for Gou. It may be minute but it’s there, and the way the anime framed that scene, it evoked a host of response from the viewers. That in itself is enough for viewers to make a determination as to what Sousuke might be feeling towards Gou at the time ... and it was probably more than a platonic kind of way...
Just to let you know that Sousuke most likely would not act on these feelings because of who he is as a person. And if there is any possibility that things could go awry between him and Rin that concerns Gou, Sousuke would not put their friendship in jeopardy. So if there was ever a way that Sousuke’s repressed feelings for Gou could surface, it would be if Gou initiates.
Gou’s Feelings
If you read through this entire damn thesis so far I think you could see that Gou’s feelings for Sousuke is a lot more overt. She is so incredibly fond of Sousuke and it is just the way she behaves around him, speaks to him and looks at him. It sends a different vibe comparatively to when she interacts with any of the other male characters. Because Gou is a side character, as viewers we don’t get to see much of her, her development or her thoughts and feelings, especially in relation to Sousuke.
Concluding Thoughts
What an incredibly long post. I didn’t realise how long it was until I scrolled back up. But really, this was so fun to write. I enjoy writing about side characters and the little hints that anime and manga give us as viewers. This is the best thing about storytelling, that is so much more than what you see before you.
The great thing about SouGou is the incredibly compatibility they have with each other. They have a lot of the common tropes found in anime that sets them up for a future pairing. I mean,, Free is not a romance genre so there wouldn’t be any emphasis placed on how one character feels about another in a romantic sense. So the anime has placed some gentle teasing in the background with its frame (usually what you see in shojo manga for example), official artworks, and CD dramas. It’s a very subtle undertone that the viewers would have to dig through and pick up out of the mass of fanservice and the storylines of the main characters. Yet this is the reason why I love KyoAni because of its numerous layers of stories and undertone!
In my opinion, if there was ever any pairing that comes out of Free, it would definitely be SouGou - it’s because the way the anime (and probably the light novel as well) set them up and emphasised on important aspects of their relationship without going into detail about it.
I gotta say, the reason why I love these two so much is because they remind me so much of TsukiYachi pairing from Haikyuu. There are parallels between the characters and I think I just enjoy shipping ones with that level of complexity and compatibility - the whole opposites attract kinda thing (and the height difference).
So what do you think? Are there any SouGou stans out there left? I’m keen to see what the 2021 Free movie will entail for these two and the potential release of Season 4 (most likely in 2022).
