"In any story, the villain is the catalyst. The hero's not a person who will bend the rules or shw the cracks in his armor.He's one-dimensional intentionally, but the villain is the person who owns up to what he is and stands by it."
-Marilyn Manson
The night was spent getting a proper hold of their bearings. They knew where in Japan they were, but no idea how to get back. They also had no idea on how they got there, but that was a problem for later. For now, shelter and food were to two most pressing issues.
Chuuya and Atsushi had never worked together before, so they were stumbling around each other the entire night. Atsushi had been hell bent on them finding shelter before anything else, and Chuuya was insistent on getting money first. Atsushi was willing to break a few laws to keep them safe, but he was very vocal about not hurting anyone. Chuuya was willing to break every law he could think of in order to get his way. They could both agree that they'd rather avoid working together ever again after they've gotten back Yokohama.
It's terrible, working with someone so different from yourself. Stumbling over each other and getting in one another's way. It could cost a life. It could cost many lives.
"That'd be terrible for being undercover." Atsushi said. He was still holding himself under a mask around Chuuya.
Chuuya scoffed. "Since when are we undercover?"
"Since neither of us know where we are or what's going on."
"Oh? Is that snark I hear?" Underlings who sassed him never got out of it unscathed.
He was suddenly confidant in his answer, "Yeah. What about it? You can't attack me."
Atsushi isn't Chuuya's underling. "Who says I can't?"
"The truce between our two groups." Damn it. "Besides, I could go to local law enforcement and report you for assault and battery."
"But you won't." Good point. "If you did, then you'd be alone in unfamiliar territory. When you get back, the truce would be called off and you'd have the entire Port Mafia after your head."
Atsushi didn't respond, falling back into the mask of self preservation.
Chuuya sighed. "Fine. In order to keep a low profile, we'll do things your way."
Still not saying anything, Atsushi took a step ahead of Chuuya and went in search of an abandoned building to set up a temporary base in. It was late, probably near midnight, so not many were out. Those who were out were sniffed out and avoided. Despite everything, Atsushi made himself ignore the calls for help. Getting involved would mean being seen. Being seen would do no good at the moment.
Chuuya was reluctant to follow Atsushi, but he had to admit that the kid wasn't acting at all like he expected him to. He'd expected a coward or someone who would go running to help at the first scream, but he did no such thing. The kid kept sniffing at the air as they walked, leading through back allies and staying out of light.
"I can say for certain that nothing has happened to the ADA." Atsushi spoke softly.
"What makes ya say that?" Chuuya asked. He was genuinely curious. How did this kid know anything like that? Could he determine anything about the Port Mafia?
Atsushi's eyes seemed to be glowing when he looked back at Chuuya, the gold and purple covered in an almost not-there film. Eyeshine, Chuuya noted, is a thing all cats have. Helps them see in the dark. "I haven't lost control of my Ability." Was that supposed to be a reassurance? "The President's Ability is still working, so I can confidently say that he - at the very least - is okay."
"Based off of that," Chuuya added on, "Everything should be okay with the Port Mafia, too."
These were only assumptions and they both new that.
It was quiet as they kept walking, still out of light and still away from humans. It took another thirty minutes of wandering until they found a place to hole up. It was a very rundown building, but it was still standing. It didn't seem to have any other occupants, so that was a point in their book.
The interior was as rundown as the exterior. The floors had no holes, but every other board squeaked when stepped on. The lights didn't work, so it was safe to assume nothing else did either. While there was no holes in the walls or broken windows, the place was starting to show signs of life in the graffiti and plants creeping in. The stairs leading to the second floor weren't rotted through, but enough weight would cause them to collapse. Much like the first floor, the second floor squeaked on every other step. The paint and wallpaper was peeling at the corners, and the doors were falling of their hinges.
Chuuya didn't like getting dirty. He'd spent so long living on the streets that the thought of staying in this building was barely digestible. Regardless, he picked a room on the second floor and went in. "I'll be in here for the night. Don't bother me." He doubted he'd get any sleep, but it would be a good place to think.
Atsushi nodded and left the man on his own. Part of him said it was a bad idea, but the rest of him knew that they were forced to trust and rely on each other. He choose the room next to Chuuya's and curled up in the far corner. He was used to sleeping in places like this. The cellar in the orphanage was much worse than here. Colder, too. Less bright.
~~~
The new first order of business, Chuuya decided, was to sort out his thoughts. Based on the maps of Japan he'd studied when he first joined the Port Mafia told him that Yokohama was near the Chubu Prefecture. It had once been a part of it, but had declared itself independent a long time ago. When exactly, he wasn't sure, but that wasn't a pressing thing to know at the moment.
He'd gone to bed on Friday night had woken up Friday afternoon. He had a whole week missing from his memory and that was never a good sign. At least, the best case suggested a week. Without knowing the exact date, he had no idea how big of a blank was now taking up his memory.
The next thing Chuuya did was search his person. He was fully dressed in his uniform, so that meant he had woken up and gotten dressed somewhere during the missing blank. He was still fully armed with a gun under his vest and the hidden knives on his person. His phone was in his back pocket, but was dead. His wallet was inside his coat, but he had no cash. At least he still had his gloves.
The next thing to do would be to set out a plan of action, but that would have to wait until Jinko woke up. Getting their story straight was the next pressing matter, but he was gonna let the kid get some rest. God knows they both need it.
Oh you wanna know about my favourite fictional man?
I HATE THAT MAN! he's handsome,brooding,has dark hair and swarthy skin. If he existed in real life I would not even be within the same city as he was. I would be as far away from him as possible. BUT I LOVE THIS MAN. HE'S MY LITTLE MEOW MEOW. I LOVE HIM TO THE MOON AND BACK. I'LL EVEN HELP HIM BURY A BODY BECAUSE ITS A FICTIONAL MAN AND HIS FICTIONAL MURDER.
I'm sorry I don't write the rules about this. I have contradictory feelings.
"How did you know?" Derek asks because he didn't mention the date to anyone, and maybe that was a mistake he shouldn't repeat in the future.
"I put a tracker on your phone," Stiles says casually, and yeah, that sounds like him.
Stiles and Derek's relationship might not be the healthiest, but it works for them, so does it really matter?
Morally Grey Characters in SFF Books
Here are some book recommendations for speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror...) with morally grey or morally ambigious characters! This is definitely something I look for and I love having a twisted protagonist I can follow! Makes things a lot more interesting, I think.
The Poppy War, by R.F. Kuang
This is definitely a must-read when looking for morally ambigious characters, and if you've been looking for that then you might've seen this series around. This fantasy trilogy follows Rin, an impoverished orphan living in the Nikara Empire, who aces the Keju, a test meant to select the nation's richest into military colleges. Selected into one of the most prestigious schools, Rin must now face issues of colorism, gender and class, while the possibility of war dangles over the college's head.
Don't be fooled by the synopsis, though. The Poppy War is not a magical-school type of story. This series revolves around Rin's corruption arc - which Ms. Kuang crafts incredibly. The character development and the attention to detail with the world-building in The Poppy War are both impressive, especially considering that the first book in the trilogy was Ms. Kuang's debut. Rin's decisions will leave you screaming, crying and (you guessed it) throwing up, as she gradually destroys everything around her.
She Who Became The Sun, by Shelley Parker-Chan
Another debut, She Who Became The Sun is definitely reminiscant of The Poppy War in the sense that it not only features morally grey characters, but is also set in an Imperial China-inspired world. Here, we follow Monk Zhu, who assumes her brother's identity, sure that she is destined for greatness, and the people she meets in her quest to achieve this. Simultaneously, we read about Ouyang, an eunuch general who serves – and is lowkey in love with – Esen, the son of a province's Prince and the war they're involved in.
Ouyang and Zhu are prime morally grey material. Zhu is motivated by her desire to achieve greatness, which was profecized for her brother, and, as she assumed his identity, she believes is now her destiny. Ouyang, on the other hand, is a more spoiler-ly case - but trust me when I say his decisions are questionable at best.
This is another case of masterful character development, beautifully crafted by Mx. Parker-Chan. Not to mention their writing is absolutely incredible here, flowerly without being too much, and their inclusion of the themes of gender is so well done.
Oh, yeah, did I mention this is queer as all hell?
The Traitor Baru Cormorant, by Seth Dickinson
Since we're talking about books that are queer as hell, I give you: The Traitor Baru Cormorant! I finished this one the other day, actually, but this trilogy, soon to be a quartet, is definitely a must-read if you're into morally grey protagonists. The Traitor Baru Cormorant is about (say it with me) Baru Cormorant, a native of Tananoke, a small island nation that is conquered by the Empire of the Masks. The Masquerade's  homophobic and sexist policies affect Baru's family as one of her fathers is killed for being queer. Baru swears revenge, and she knows exactly how she'll exact it: from the inside.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant follows her path of revenge as she inflitrates the bureaucracy of this Empire. So, as you can probably guess, it's a very politically-driven book, and it's for sure very dense. I would definitely recommend it, though, if you're up for it -- The Traitor Baru Cormorant has probably the best representations of moral greyness I've ever read. Baru's character is so layered and complex. Her every move is questionable, though you know her motives are good, all focused on the liberation of her home, Taranoke, from imperial rule.
A Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin
Another dense, political one, but this definitely needs to be on the list. Mr. Martin is a master at creating dense plots with the most complex characters you've ever read - and none of them are good. Every single character (except for maybe Ned Stark??) in this series makes questionable decisions, and as the plot progresses they only get more fucked up. The A Song of Ice and Fire series, also known as Game of Thrones, the title of its first book, follows the political situation of Westeros and its surronding countries, as its noble families fight for power in the aftermath of a rebellion.
Although this is definitely a must if you're into grey morality, Mr. Martin's masterpiece comes as a big commitment. The series currently spans approximately 5,000 pages across five books, and it has been more than a decade in the making. Fans (me included) have been waiting for the mythical Winds of Winter for years, and after that is published, there's still A Dream of Spring, which hasn't even begun to be written. It's important to keep that in mind before diving into this one, but let me be the first one to tell you, it's definitely worth it.
I have a couple of more of these, so if you ever need a book full of morally grey characters, just drop me an ask and I'll get back to you with a couple more :)
Book: This man is the VILLAIN. He is EVIL and he kills his enemies in the CRUELEST ways. Do not cross him. He will cut off your tongue if you speak to him the wrong way. He is BAD. He is the embodiment of DARKNESS. He doesn't care about who suffers. He is selfish. He would even destroy the entire world for the person he loves.
GREY IS MY FAVOURITE COLOUR
In the shadows, where darkness takes its hold,
A villain's tale is too often left untold.
They cloak themselves in cruelty's embrace,
but beneath it all, a different story finds its place.
Their past is a beautifully misunderstood, tangled mess,
A life of pain, a heart in distress.
Innocence lost, betrayed by trust,
Their journey through the darkness is a must.
Heroes may rise, noble and brave;
Their sacrifices are what the world's hearts crave.
But villains, oh, the depths they descend,
For love or revenge, they fiercely defend.
They may seem evil, cruel, and cold,
Yet, for one person's sake, their story unfolds.
A selfish streak, manipulative art,
Yet they'd tear worlds apart to protect one heart.
The world sees monsters born in the night,
But villains were shaped by a different fight.
Lost souls bearing scars, their innocence refused.
In places of darkness, lost and so confused,
In the depths of pain, where lost souls roam,
They carry their scars, denied a peaceful home.
Before we blame their actions so wild,
Look at the scars of a wounded inner child.
A hero's sacrifice, while noble and bold,
Would leave behind my heart an empty, broken mold.
But with a villain's love,
As white as a black dove.
If they're the one who holds my heart in their hand,
Through flames and ashes, they'll still stand.
Selfish I am, it's true, in this love that I want,
From birth's tender cry to death's final haunt.
Born this way and unapologetically so,
I'll remain until my last breath's soft flow.
In my villain's embrace, I find my grace,
A love transcending time and space.
In their dark embrace, I find my peace,
As the world's storms never cease.
For heroes may fall, and the world may decay,
But in my villain's arms, I choose to stay.
In the painting of the night,
Under the moon's grey light.
My villain claims my love,
His heart a hidden dove,
His lips brushed against mine,
Soft and gentle as a black dove's wing.
Beautifully bathed in the lunar light.
In a world of black and white,
Grey has always been my favourite light.
Oh, the subtle shades that sway,
In the dance of my villain's way.
-NEELIHARA
I wrote this poem after seeing a show where the villain I loved was killed. I was left with a sense of loss, and I wanted to mourn this character. The poem is an attempt to explore the idea that even villains may have more to their story. It's a means to express my love and empathy towards the villain. Thank you for reading, and I would love to know your thoughts on my poem.
Short Prompt # 4
TW: Smoking, destruction mention
Supervillain takes in a long drag from their cigarette, letting their shoulders fall as they exhale. They subconsciously kick the air with their feet, perched on the rooftop of a dilapidated house in a lifeless part of town, one even a ghost wasn't expected to grace.
The place may not have been ideal, certainly far from warranting the title of 'pretty', but it was quiet. And for someone who was infamous for their penchant for destruction, the master criminal rather enjoyed peace.
But alas, nothing good seems to last long in this world, and their little break swiftly gets interrupted for the first time in forever. Except the stranger doesn't seem to be looking to intrude, if the careful, measured-out lightness of their steps was any indication.
Hero stood in front of them, arms folded across their chest. The sun seems to illuminate the outline of their features as though they were drawn in golden ink, eyes sparkling. It made them look ever the definition of angelic.
The irony of it was beautifully cruel, in an almost bittersweet way, the kind only the twisted likes of Supervillain could enjoy the taste of.
"Why would the agency send you and not Superhero to placate me? I'm assuming that's what you're here to do." The supervillain said that last part completely devoid of the uncertainty that came with their expression of choice. They flick the ash off their cigarette, fixing their gaze on their vis-á-vis.
The crime-fighter shifts their weight on one foot, seeming to shake a little under the villain's steel-hard stare, somewhat embarrassed by how easily they could read them, like a book thrown open. "Because they said I'm the only one you'd listen to," they shrug.
Supervillain laughs, a musically chilling sound. They blow a teasing ringlet of smoke in Hero's direction, watching in delight as their nemesis scrunches up their face, wafting the smoke away.
"Is lung cancer the next thing on your bucket list?" they question, trying to ease the tension. More for themselves than anyone else.
"Ha," they huff out, more amused than annoyed. They rather enjoy watching the tight line of crime-stopper's shoulders fade as they notice that revelation. Oh, how easily they could affect their emotions, how well they could play those strings. "Well, for once in life, the agency actually did something right."
"So you'd consider listening?" Hero's eyes light up only very slightly, but Supervillain never missed anything. They settle down next to them, trying to swallow down their uneasiness, but counting a little on the criminal's better nature. Brave, little thing.
"I won't make any promises. You know I don't like that kind of commitment. But if you go about things in my idea of the right way. . . then, I could be persuaded." They stand up, only to crush their cigarette underneath their boot, resuming their sitting position once more.
They were going to play this game, the question was whether it was by Hero's rules or their own? Or both mixed together to reach an equilibrium no one would've fathomed was possible?
