Fire and Water

The current scene of my comic has a whole lot of this goin’ on

....so I wanted to share how I’m doing the fire and water effects xD To start with, I’m using Medibang Paint Pro, but this can probably be done in Photoshop using the same blending options. The brushes used (other than default) were from Yuumei’s cloud tutorial which I repurpose for.........a lot.

Fire

Use an airbrush and just sorta squiggle on the shape you’re going for. Erase a bit to give it fiery tendrils.

Duplicate the layer twice, so you’ve got this:

On Under Fire A, change the hue of the layer to yellow. Run it through a gaussian blur of ~20 to get this:

For Under Fire B, change the hue to red and run it through a gaussian blur of ~5-10:

Set both layers Under Fire A and Under Fire B to the ‘Add’ blending mode. This will give the fire a nice glowy outline:

Duplicate the base Fire layer again, and make it white. How I usually do color-switches like this is just lock the transparency of the layer (Protect Alpha) and then drop a rectangle of color over it.

Gaussian blur it, change the blending mode to “Add”, and reduce the opacity of the layer to ~65% (with fire and glowy things, there’s a lot of “blur+add”)

Duplicate the base fire layer again (leave it the orange this time), blur it a bit, switch to “Add” at ~50% capacity

Select the Fire layer and contract the select by ~10-15. Then, on a new layer, fill the selection with white, blending mode “Add”, ~70% opacity:

For particle effects (like embers and water splashes), this is where it gets a little woogly. I’m using Yuumei’s Whispy Cloud Brush, which I imported into Medibang with the following settings:

Using that brush, I drop some scattered motes like

Then I duplicate that layer, make the motes white, switch it to “Add” to make them more glowy:

Water

Water usually starts out with mooshing out the basic shape with a sorta taupe-y color. Your color choice may vary, it’s just the setting of my world casting everything in red that does this for me:

Once the base color is down, I use a watercolor-brush and add some “texture” to the water--what you see under the sorta smokey stuff. I added the smokey texture using Yuumei’s thick cloud brush to give it a bit more darkness in that spot. There’s a lot of coming back to adjust as the effect is built up.

You also see on this layer some splatters. These were added later on using the base water color and the standard Medibang Splatter brush.

Make a new clipping layer above the water base and smudge some white on there with the watercolor brush. I try to sorta follow where the water would “fold” (which in this case was along the stone’s edges):

On a new clipping layer (”Multiply” blending mode, ~75% opacity) I add a bit of shading. The water’s directly in the light here so the shading was more a soft gradient and some where the water folds around the rocks:

On a new clipping layer, with a thin white hard brush, add some wooshes where in the direction of the water’s flow:

On a new clipping later, using the splatter brush, I added some BIG white splatters and then smudged them up a bit. Switch the layer to Overlay ~30%:

And some more splatters using the base water color on a normal clipping later at 30% opacity:

Then to make the color more watery, I made a new clipping layer, Overlay, ~75% opacity. On that layer I added a teal overlay:

Change the base water later to 80% opacity to make it translucent:

For the seafoam, I mostly go nuts with Yuumei’s cloudbrush along the edges and folds of the water on a new layer (not clipping) with the Add blending mode at 75% opacity. To make it more splashy, I also added particle effects on the same layer using the splatter brush:

Lastly, I made a new layer under the foam at around 50% opacity. On that layer, I added some soft white fog using the fluffy cloud brush to give it a sort of misty effect:

All in all, there’s a lot of steps, but the important thing is they’re easily repeatable.

hello!! could you recommend some mangas that you think a person shoulf read at least once in their lifetime? i'm currently up-to-date with the tokyo revengers and monster no.8, but i'd like to try out different genres too :))

oh gosh, I've recently gotten myself into reading manga more this past year, so I'm no connoisseur, but I will definitely recommend some series (both finished and on-going) that I have found myself truly enjoying! here's a list:

d.gray-man by katsura hoshino

okay, so I finished reading this series recently on a recommendation (tysm maddy) and I am... I am completely enamored by it. from the art style to the storyline to the WONDERFUL cast of characters... it's just an all around magnificent story that, in my opinion, is so much better than any other shonen that I have read! there's so much to say about it, but I will be brief and say that this is definitely a must read!

orange by ichigo takano

this is a pretty beloved series... and for good reason. this shoujo seriously pulled at my heartstrings when I read it as it had a high focus on friendship and other difficult issues. there are some conflicting reviews with regards to the internal dialogue within the mc and the love interest, but like... I think it highlights how high schoolers act pretty well Lmfao

blue period by tsubasa yamaguchi

boy finds passion in art and chases after said passion through hard work! there are lots of introspective moments in this that'll hit you all at once because it's so relatable, especially when you think about your own passions and the hard work and dedication you put towards them.

look back by tatsuki fujimoto

this is actually a one shot written by the same person who made chainsaw man! gosh, I remember reading this... and then rereading it a couple more times when it first came out. incredibly heartfelt and reflective, a story that I think everyone should read as it's a masterpiece!

Alright I’ve got a hard question for you. If you were in the Haikyuu world and you get to be the manager for one team which team would it be? Keeping in mind all the other teams would be your opponents.

oh my, what a difficult question to answer I really think—SHIRATORIZAWA!

alright I know you didn't ask for my reasoning, but I will give it to you along with the pros and cons of the other schools LOL

shiratorizawa:

a major powerhouse school which sets aside a large amount of funding for their athletic departments. these are the kids that most likely get the fancy lunch boxes and ride the charter buses whenever they go play tournaments. they have a good reputation and attract the best players with their state of the art facilities and equipment! they stay winning. not only this, but the team is so FUNNY! I love the dynamics the guys have (ushiten and semishira just make me lol) and I feel like they're not too much of a handful (even though I write them to be lol again). dependable team, it's very easy to look up to the guys! I also look great in purple LMAO

kamomedai:

okay this is the team which I would want to manage next if shiratorizawa was out of reach LOL and I feel like people might think this is so left field, but I like where this school is located (nagano prefecture). this team has a solid play style and keep it serious on the court, but you also have the trio of hirugami, hoshiumi, and gao to liven things up. those three crack me up so much... I just know that gao tried to pick up hoshiumi once like he was simba in the lion king and then got his ass kicked for it... hirugami merely watched from the side and went "mhm, should have kept his mouth shut!" while telling you to enjoy the show...

seijoh:

pro: another hilarious group, especially with seijoh 4. I can really see this team making it a point to go out together a lot for teambuilding and to create lasting friendships and connections. they'll warm up to you real easy. there's probably never a boring moment with this team.

con: they never went to nationals. I'm sorry but I can't be with a team that constantly loses. it would kill me

pro: kita shinsuke and the rest of the team

con: the miyas' antics would drive me up the wall

dateko:

pros: cute uniform colors, has a signature playstyle that they pride themselves on, most of the guys seem like they would be incredibly helpful and sweet

hello how do u think karaoke would go with reader and the jackals ???? i can totally see meian trying to wingman atsumu by making him and reader do a really lovely dovey duet and he aims to fluster you but you're just so.......... pretty and atsumu can barely hold it together !!!!! bokuto finds it very funny and sakusa is so done with his pining already

omg this is so funny to think about because there are so many avenues for it, so I’m just going to make a quick summary of it with each character (sorry if this is not what you wanted lol)

atsumu ➝ ok imagine a “breaking free”-esque song... that’s the song atsumu picks for you to sing with him. that’s how he declares his love and it’s equal parts embarrassing and cute. everyone except bokuto and hinata cringe when he’s acting outlandish while singing (tries to make it more comedic... doesn’t really translate), but he gets flustered when you’re into the song, smiling at him and dancing your way over to him and he’s grateful that the lights are low in the room otherwise everyone else will be able to see that he’s turning tomato red. when you ask him to do another duet, he’s on cloud nine.

sakusa ➝ tried to stay back in the hotel, but bokuto effectively persuaded (read: forced) him to come. sits back and watches everyone sing, taking a sip from his glass of water every now and then. he joins in when you hand him a mic for a group song and then sits back down as soon as it’s over. his voice is on the lighter, floatier side when he sings. when bokuto and atsumu start belting to the backstreet boys he goes to the bathroom and never comes back.

hinata ➝ bubbly pop is his jam, you cannot tell me otherwise. all the songs he picks are so upbeat and make you want to dance. he’s so fun to be around and kind too, like he wants everyone in the room to be comfortable so he’ll be clapping and hollering and whistling whenever someone finishes singing. proposes group songs so no one is left out. puts on the funky costumes too (those big star shaped sunglasses and colorful mardi gras beads aren’t taken off until the end of the night) and controls the colorful lights in the room so that the room looks like a club.

bokuto ➝ the life of the party. he’s shaking those tambourines and maracas with all he’s got! will round an arm around your shoulder and pull you in as he sings “see you again” and you have to remind him that you’re not dying because he’s so into it lol he’s so funny though, like he’ll be the one putting on the costume pieces provided in the room and will beg you to dress up with him and put matching hats on with you. uses the entire room like it’s his stage, he plays the part so well and his vocals aren’t too bad (will sometimes crack when he’s trying to reach a high note, but that’s okay! he shakes it off in the next second). don’t pass up on karaoke with bokuto, it’s the experience of a lifetime.

inunaki ➝ will hype everyone up at the mic, even if they sound horrific. makes sure no one is hogging the mic (bokuto and atsumu) so that everyone has a turn. you expect him to sing ballads, but he goes all out and sings something so left field like “numb” by linkin park. no one expects it from him, it’s like an aggretsuko moment. leaves everyone speechless. no one ever believes you when you tell them about it and inunaki makes sure to never let that side of him out loose in public.

meian ➝ best singer of the group, hands down. kind of a boomer though, and will pick songs that no one knows from like the 80′s, so he’s going solo when it’s his turn to sing. the one instance you know a song and join him, he’s super grateful and more lively, trying to hype you up and harmonize with you. will be a bit of a wingman and nudge atsumu to sing a certain song with you while pointing at the catalogue.

dumb question but how does one get online/tumblr friends who share the same interests? lol i see everyone here know each other and are very supportive and im like 🧍🏽‍♀️

this isn’t a dumb question! tbh, I find it difficult to make friends online as I’m incredibly shy and often find myself unable to “make the first move,” but the wonderful thing about tumblr and twt and such is that you can easily see what other people are interested in and it gives you something to talk about! most people are open to making new friends (they’ll usually have their asks/dms off if they aren’t) and would love to chat about whatever has their attention at the moment.

trust me when I say that most people love to engage in conversation about their interests. if they post about their favorite series or character, then you can add your own two cents with a comment, or if they post art or a fic you can let them know how you felt about it! as long as you're kind then there's really nothing wrong with starting conversation. engagement within a community is key if you want to make friends on here.

here’s a list of what you can do to engage more within the community:

join a network -> it’s way easier to get to know people this way as it's a smaller group of people who have similar interests as you. there are always some content creation communities on tumblr and gc invitations on twt that're floating around.

send engaging asks/dms -> give them something to talk about. don’t send them something like “Can I be your friend 🥺” bc Uhh sure mate I guess, but where does the conversation go from there? personally, I like it when people share meta/headcanons for me about a work I enjoy since it makes for easy open discussion.

comment/reply on posts -> this is how I became friends w/ my closest mutual on here. I commented on one of her fics and then we started sharing headcanons and began to hit it off in the dms!

make content -> Lol this is kind of how I got most of my internet friends. this showed that I was pretty active within the community (was always in the tags...) and that kind of drew people to my account? I also feel like I got really lucky and shared/joined during the "height" of hq tumblr in summer 2020 when a lot of other ppl were sucked into it and wanted to read new content abt it Lmao like most of the ppl I engage w/ and talk to currently are mutuals/friends I met on here in 2020

lastly, I wanted to add that just bc you talk to someone on here =/= to being mutuals or friends or whatnot. sometimes you vibe with people and sometimes you don't. and it's fine either way! that's nothing both against you or the other person. you can find someone else out there that you enjoy chatting and spending time with.

@wackatoshi -> I feel like everyone already knows winter on this side of tumblr, but let me just sing my praises for her because she has such a way with words that after you read her works you’ll stare at that last word and go “omg I got to read that for FREE?!” seriously, I feel like everything she touches is gold and I so badly want to tell her this every day lol if you’ve never read her works… please get comfy in bed and go through her masterlist! it’s for your own good

@star-puff -> the talent in this one… it shines like the sun! seriously, meg is a fantastic storyteller that she’ll make you sympathize for characters you hate LMFAO there’s so much versatility between her works and each piece is so unique, she really knows how to set the mood and tone between characters in each scene… like she can work with ANYTHING... it’s nothing short of amazing

@neonghxst -> can paint a picture in your mind like claude monet’s water lilies with her words. el’s imagery in her works suck you in, like you’ll hear every sound she’s describing and she makes it so easy to close your eyes and picture everything. also has the prettiest hc’s ever?? her writing is a gift. not only that but she has a rockin’ personality; so fun to talk to and her blog makes you feel at home

@ahtsumu -> listen, I love flo’s headcanons they’re always so new and fun! I’m always nodding my head along to what she has to say like “yes, yes that is EXACTLY atsumu!!” her blog makes you feel like y’all are bffs lol like when she’s on the dash it’s basically the same feeling as watching a chick flick movie with your bestie. she’s such a joy (also has a jjk dedicated blog that you can follow @gojcsatoru)

@edensxgarden -> I think the best way to describe eden’s writing is the feeling when you’re watching a ghibli movie. there are these slow, quiet moments between scenes that are written so beautifully and make you appreciate the piece so much more. she could literally write about spreading nutella on a slice of bread and she would be able to make it seem so magical. also does writing for genshin impact!

on ao3:

infantblue -> I read her fic ampersand and fell down a rabbit hole for atsuhina. yes, it’s long, but you are so enraptured by the scenes and the feelings for each character that time will fly by and you’re already at the ending and you’re left with the same satisfaction of eating a full course meal made by your grandma. her writing is so immersive and you’re constantly thinking “oh god, what’s going to happen now?” do yourself a favor and PLEASE read her works

perennials -> writing that’s on another level. humor is top tier, the kind of humor that really bites and makes throw your head back as you laugh because they’re just that dang hilarious. I love it. you’ll have a great time reading their works. lots of haikyuu fics and they’re currently writing zelda: botw fics. truthfully, I’m not even into zelda, but I’m reading one of their fics because I love their writing so much… makes me wanna get a switch or watch a gameplay just to get into the lore lol also has tons of neat art that you should check out

wanderlustt -> another writer whose works are just so… wow. has such an amazing sense of humor and something I noticed about her works is that she really knows how control her tone? I don’t know if this makes sense, but one second I’ll be laughing and then she’ll do this careful tiptoe and guide you to the next scene and you’ll be so immersed in the situation. literally biting my fist as I read each line bc it’ll be from how she’s stringing her words so carefully and… it just feels so real dude omg please go read

alkhale -> I always recommend alkhale lmao I’m addicted to their writing. works flow super well and you’ll definitely find yourself reading well past midnight because you can’t put your phone down until you find out what happens in the next chapter. salute to alkhale for providing fantastic content! also on tumblr and ffnet, but I read their stuff on ao3

moosh, i just wanted some advice (even though i know this is a haikyuu blog), but i got a B as the final grade for a math class and i'm stressing out about it lowering my gpa and everything. i wanted to know if this is going to effect my potential of getting into college or other things and i'm just stressed about it

oh goodness. I can relate to what you're going through right now and I want you to know that getting a bad grade isn't the end of the world (even though it most certainly feels like it at the moment). it's not going to have a drastic effect on your chances of getting into college, so pleaseeeee don't stress. I know the stakes seem so high, esp when you're applying to college, but you should be proud that you finished the class and got through it!

you're fine for college apps and if you didn't get the grade you wanted this time, then the next semester you can make it a goal to do better in your classes and bring up your gpa! right now, you can't go back in time and retake the course, but what you can do is rest, relax, and destress. everything is okay and you got this :-)

Hello I’m the anon who asked which team you’d be the manager for way back when 👀 *ahem* uh yes I have come with another question for you.

This time however it’s a little silly. If you were stuck on a deserted island which 5 Haikyuu characters (yes characters do not just the boys) would you hope are with you and why is Atsumu not on that list? The Atsumu slander is real 👀🥺 but he’s still my baby 🥴 not to cheat on Suna 🤤 not to sound thirsty 👀

HEYYY how are you? I hope you're doing well! this is another interesting question that I've never really thought about and have since taken into consideration two groups. the "I'm here for a good time, not a long time" group and the "we're surviving this along with the apocalypse" group (ngl it was to hard to pick out a crew for each)

(read more included as I got a bit wordy with this answer)

"here for a good time, not a long time" group: hanamaki, bokuto, hinata, hoshiumi, akagi

"people will see that we're missing and will try to find us, so don't worry! everything will work out!" kind of mindset within this group that leads to our demise. very random group, but I think everyone on here’s a hoot. everyone is having way too much fun shaking coconuts down from the palm trees to really worry about long term survival. the harsh truth comes a week later with the sinking realization in that drinking coconut water and eating its meat isn't enough to sustain oneself. this is when the guys start clashing and fights ensue about roles within the group.

there are some strong personalities within this group which isn't necessarily ideal as it could lead to unresolved arguments... and no middle ground being met definitely means hostility in the group is bound to happen. it is a small group, but if someone decides to leave, then that means it will have a detrimental effect on survival capabilities. we need all hands on deck in order to make it out alive!

I have a feeling that people will go out on their own a lot to "find food" and all that stuff... no one is focused on shelter and warmth until it's too late with the sun already setting... a lot of "I'm built different" attitudes with these guys. it would be exhausting to tell them all the time that they can't take on a wild boar with their bare hands or to stop doing the tarzan yell whenever they go out looking for fire wood...

yeah, we need someone coming in within a week or else we're all screwed... but at least we're having fun during that week!

"we're surviving the apocalypse" group: aone, yachi, shirabu, ushijima, kuroo

you can't have too many strong personalities in a group (as seen above) or else you'll be setting yourself up for failure which is why I picked out people who wouldn't argue amongst themselves too much and are able to easily find common ground (the goal of making it out alive).

you can split this group into two categories: brains (yachi, shirabu, kuroo) and brawns (aone and ushijima). this is perfect as we need people to draft up plans while taking the landscape, the wildlife, shelter, etc. etc. etc. into account and we also need people to act upon those plans. there's balance in this lineup.

anyway, shirabu and ushijima are a pair because shirabu will do everything in his power to make sure ushijima is saved... no doubt, he will be making a replica of brazil's christ the redeemer statue with ushijima's face as a SOS signal for any passing ships and aircraft on the first day. kuroo would make a great leader as he's the most empathetic in the group and understands everyone's wants and needs. meanwhile, yachi will be able to constantly remind everyone about how dire the situation is while drafting up preventable measures no one else thought of for the unforeseeable future. aone, like ushijima, offers much firepower to the group and would be great for heavy lifting.

I saw discourse on who the smartest Haikyuu character was on tiktok and the fact that Terushima came up the most really says something. Yeah sure I believe that Terushima can be smart, but the smartest?? Doubt it when Kita is literally right there with his “what’s a failing grade” and top of his class results

LMAO I haven't really been on the hq side of tiktok but... yeah I agree I don't think he's the smartest when considering the entire character cast (agreed with you about kita being one of the smartest and let me also add in hirugami and akaashi). while I do think he's pretty book smart and can easily absorb information when presented to him (he seriously gives me the vibes that he looks up formula sheets 15 mins before an exam and memorizes them just to use once to ace a test), I think he struggles with common sense life skills which definitely... brings him down in the ranking of what's considered intelligent LOL like he gives me the vibes that he has no idea how to do his laundry at 20 years old
