An old thought I found sitting in my phone notes: in 'Desperado' Adrien uses the snake miraculous over 30,000 times before he finally accepts that he's trying to be something he's not and gives back the snake.

In 'Miracle Queen' Ladybug gives him the snake again, but this time as Cat Noir rather an Adrien. When he unifies the powers, he's channelling the snake in full sincerity.

It's his Second Chance - after failing so monumentally before, he gets to try that power again - and he wields it well without the deception and games.

It shows that even back then, just before the turning point in New York, Ladybug was beginning to see Cat with new eyes and give him more respect. In 'Desperado' she laughed at Adrien's joke as Aspic, but groaned when he told it as Cat Noir. She told Aspic they didn't need Cat, but by the end of the series she was acknowledging just how much she relied on him. He held her when she cried and gave the support she needed when she lost faith in herself.

She rewarded this by entrusting him with the snake, after previously shrugging off her loyal partner in favour of her crush. The switch in her mind / heart was there. She just wasn't ready to acknowledge what any of it meant. And he proved himself to her. This time, he got it right, because he was simply being himself.

I mean...they still could've given him some hair, but...it was a sweet thing to happen.
