It's been a fun time have Des in the GM's seat, with Adam getting to be a player at long last in one of his favorite systems. In this last episode of the mini-campaign, One for Sorrow and their biggest fan get in their own way on their way to save the day anyway!

Funeral Pyres (a short dnd campaign)

Hello Hello,

It's been a while since we've gotten the chance to play together. Still, I need to start scratching together a short campaign for whenever we're able to once again battle beasts and burdens.

This is the first post of this new campaign, which I'm planning to run over a 2 or 3 1-hour-long sessions. The players have busy lives, so we unfortunately can never play long... but here's the story so far and possible stuff to think over.

As always this will be a messy stew of ideas that may or may not be refined and re-defined over the coming days.

Thanks for your patience, and if you find this with an unfinished ending I do apologize. Anyways let's get to it.

General Overview and Outline:

"You have been invited to a funeral of a former great king Morvak, leader of the island of Cretaros. The large island is lush with life, known for it's warm climate, exports of wine, and uniquely less-human population*. It is considered a haven for many who would otherwise be judged in the larger world.

You somehow know Morvak's son Momuk, who was the one to send out invitations. Whether a childhood friend or an ex-lover (I won't judge) - or perhaps an old ally of Morvak's - you have secured an invitation to the festival of remembrance being held in the king's honor.

However, details of the king's death are few and as you make a steady approach aboard a ship bound for Cretaros you can't help but feel a creeping feeling of unease. One thing anyone would know of Morvak was that he was a champion, a warrior and the idea that a simple death awaited him can not sit right with you.

*(think 30% humans, the rest are creatures like minotaurs, satyrs, maybe even throw in some npcs of more peculiar lineages like harpies or medusa's if you're down with that)

Notes Before starting:

Momuk was the Minotaur from the Prison Break one-shot I posted forever ago - I did this so my players would have an easy-in for how they know him. I can make him a page/synopsis to attach here at some point if anyone wants.

This is - clearly - a Greek style setting, but feel free to fuse it up with whatever vibe. Story-wise I don't think it will concave if the setting is a western instead of something.

Players Don't need to be invited to the funeral - at least not for how I'm running it. Maybe your knight or bard just wanted to pay their respects but don't know anyone, or perhaps your rogue or cleric know a bit more of what's going on than they're lead everyone to believe. That can definitely lead to some interesting storytelling.

an adventure set in an industrialized city--

the air is thick with factory smoke, and the traditional craftspeople are being overwhelmed by big business. inchoate guilds and unions are beginning to form, but every day is a struggle for workers' rights.

it's become necessary, in a city where the sky is clogged with smog, for professional wizards to construct towers and spires from which they can track the heavens and maintain a link to the stars. but only the large, monopolistic wizard companies -- and the rare independently wealthy wizard -- have the means to build such a tower.

our heroes have a simple job: help a nascent working-class wizards' union scope out a site for their own tower, raise funds to pay for its construction, and ensure that construction goes smoothly.

why would you need a crew of adventurers to work a job like this? surely the wizardry magnates don't mind a little competition? surely the unionized wizards don't pose a serious threat to the companies' continued exploitation of the working class business model? surely the evocation barons wouldn't arrange a few assassinations or deadly explosion to sabotage this tower and the union, would they?

#i'm picturing an adventure for like 2nd-level D&D characters but you could use other systems too #could segue into a larger plot about corruption in the city's upper echelons #or just be a cool mini-adventure/intro to a campaign that unites the PCs #d&d #ttrpgs
