Love on the Brain is honestly one of the best books of this season, of this entire year. It had me screaming the whole time, and every single chapter it was for a wildly different reason. Even if you try to imagine *some* of the outcomes, it still manages to surprise you in the best possible way.

May 8th is just around the corner, and do you know what that means? Making cute designs for the Dracula cast so I can get fully invested again and make jokes about a 130 year old book.
Full line up below.

Okay, now that Dracula Daily has reached it’s end I can finally scream about something that has bothered me for so long:
Why is it always Van Helsing or his descendant in vampire media that’s portrayed as the cool vampire slayer when the Harkers are right there! Yes, Van Helsing is amazing and important but he’s not the one wielding a knife and throwing entire coffins around or using a psychic link to gps locate Drac! Not to mention the fact that Jonathan obviously has something supernatural about him by the end of the story, so it could easily be that Mina is the same way. Which means that they could make for a really fantastic and creepy vampire hunter family! A descendant of Van Helsing? A super academic. A descendant of the Harkers? A vampire hater with possible mysterious vampire powers. It would work so much better!!!!

I have read Fellowship of the Ring more times than I have cared to keep count and every time I read Boromir’s, well, possession for lack of a better word, I have read it in fear, in discomfort, in horror, indifferently.
This was, I think, the first time I read it in pity. I looked at all the plans Boromir was making, how he would save his beloved city, how obstinate he was in his belief that the men of Minas Tirith would not be corrupted when wielding the Ring against Sauron —and I felt sad. He’s waving his hands and hollering and part of him is desperate just for the Ring, of course he is, he’s been traveling beside it with no hope for months, but he’s also desperate for hope. He’s desperate for a chance to save his people, save his brother, save his city.
Moreover, every time he calls out the Elves or the Wizards, you have to remember that he doesn’t know them. All he knows is that he traveled almost a full year to get their advice and they send him on, in his eyes, a hopeless venture. The one hope they give him is Aragorn, who promises to return and help save Minas Tirith with him, but even that all changes once Gandalf dies. They come to Lothlorien and of course it’s a welcome break, but they cannot, or maybe in Boromir’s eyes will not, help his people. And once they leave, Aragorn assumes his role as leader of the Fellowship in Gandalf’s stead more permanently and suddenly even that one, brief, uncertain hope of his is gone. Aragorn will follow Frodo. And it’s almost certain that Frodo will not go to Minas Tirith.
So is it any wonder, really, that tired, desperate, hopeless Boromir, out of his realm, out of his depth, already hanging by a thread when he joins the Fellowship and having been gnawed on by the Ring for months upon months afterwards, finally snaps once it’s clear that he will have to return home empty-handed and almost certain that somewhere far away Sauron is capturing the Ring and killing the companions that he had bonded with? Of course part of the Ring is making him lust for power, but it’s also his only “reliable” (in his mind) source of hope left to save his city.
And so I read Boromir’s (intelligent and thought out, mind you) raving and I don’t feel scared for Frodo, not after reading it so many times and knowing what ultimately happens, but sorrow for Boromir.

I'm following along with Dracula Daily and RE: Dracula this year! I've read the book a handful of times but haven't really ever drawn anything from it except for an Inktober sketch many years ago

I find this Dracula Daily hiatus particularly amusing because so much of this book to this point has been narrated by Mina and Jonathan. Suddenly they are both quiet and it's conspicuous.
But unlike Jonathan's earlier hiatuses, this one isn't ominous. We know they just got married. They're too busy doing what married people do on their honeymoon to tell us about it.

it´s so funny to me how all these witchy nonnas were out there telling their witchy daughters and grand-daughters to be wary of demons and especially of the Demon Princes, but alas, within the span of a couple weeks, they all individually came up with the grand idea to marry the Devil.

I love how Dracula Daily has given me a new perspective on Lucy. It’s completely changed my view of her.
It’s easy to dismiss Lucy as a shallow, golden child socialite to be, but now, reading the book in chronological order (and with the rest of Tumblr following along) I can’t read this latest letter without a great twinge of sadness, where before I largely dismissed it as idle chat.
The latest we heard from Lucy in her private diary was about how stressed and scared she is, how she feels isolated, how she feels the need to quiet people’s fears about her health and be fun and jolly, while in reality she is (literally and figuratively) drained.
And now, five days later, she writes to Mina after receiving her best friend’s glowing letter about how happy and excited she is to finally be married to Jonathan and their hopes for the future.
So Lucy puts on a brave face! She doesn’t tell Mina anything. What could Mina do anyway? All the way across the ocean? Better not to worry her. Yes I’m quite well again! No more sleepwalking for me! Definitely not :)
You and Jonathan should come back home soon! For Jonathan’s sake! (Please)
With this new lens, we read between the lines, and they paint a dreadfully lonely and terrifying picture.

"if only the characters knew they were in Dracula” meanwhile Mina is literally holding the novel Dracula in her very hands, sealed with her own wedding ring, and not reading it for beautiful romantic reasons

I'm not saying this is canon or anything, obviously it's hard to apply modern conceptions to older writings and we all bring ourselves to our interpretations. That said, there's something really special to me as a queer woman-adjacent person about how Mina loves Lucy and Johnathan. I still think about the scene where Mina watched Lucy sleep and thought about how beautiful she was, how her fiancé will be lucky to see her like this. She segways into thinking about how women in the future will be able to propose to their husbands-to-be. I think Mina has the same love in her voice when looking after Lucy and when looking after Johnathan. And of course finding someone beautiful doesn't have to be romantic. I just like reading Mina as bi/queer and drawing on scenes like these.
