romance movie recs?
Maurice (1987, dir. James Ivory. M/M) - the OG gays who get a happy ending no matter what society says actually
Secretary (2002, dir. Steven Shainberg. M/F) - what if you wanted a romance movie but you wanted it to be a romance between two very mentally ill sadomasochistic freaks having a workplace relationship, and it rocked. what then
The Shape of Water (2017, dir. Guillermo del Toro. M/F) - GET THOSE EGGS IN YOU, SALLY HAWKINS. YOU FUCK THAT MERMAN
Big Eden (2000, dir. Thomas Bezucha. M/M) - This is THE gay slice-of-life romance movie, it's so lovely and gorgeous, I recommend it big time.
Fire Island (2022, dir Andrew Ahn. M/M) - Pride and Prejudice but make it gay, Asian, and (even) hot(ter)
Crimson Peak (2015, dir. Guillermo del Toro. M/F.) - did you say GOTHIC romance? and also that you love and crave incest and hauntings and dead butterflies?
Hello, My Name is Doris (2015, Michael Showalter. M/F.) - Sally Field embracing that MILF life, God bless her
Populaire (2012, dir. Régis Roinsard. M/F.) - I have a kink for secretaries. you knew that when you came here
the above are all fun movies i love but some random other gay (men) romances that i've rated highly on letterboxd are I Love You Phillip Morris (2009), Bedrooms and Hallways (1998, dir. Rose Troche), God's Own Country (2017, dir. Francis Lee), Breaking Fast (2020, dir. Mike Mosallam), and My Beautiful Launderette (1985, dir. Stephen Frears)

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

After the U.S. invaded Iraq 20 years ago, Iraqi American playwright and actor Heather Raffo created and starred in an acclaimed play “Nine Parts of Desire” about the lives of Iraqi women.
She’s returned to the subject on film and through a distinctly American lens, setting a new version in Michigan. Jeffrey Brown of PBS went there to see the work for the PBS arts and culture series, CANVAS.
Tumblr media
Uprooted after her father’s death during the pandemic, an Iraqi American woman attempts to grieve at the site of the oldest Iraqi Church in North America.
What starts in profound isolation, becomes communal as Iraqi women, ordinary and extraordinary, come to her in spirit and ancestry with their personal stories of love and resilience.
Together, they offer a celebration of the Iraqi female experience and an explicit warning – the divisions Iraq endured are not unique, Iraq is a bellwether for America now.
Nearly 20 years ago, 9 Parts of Desire premiered to widespread acclaim on London stages and Off-Broadway, later becoming a global theatrical phenomenon.
Now, Heather Raffo adapts her multi-award-winning solo play about Iraqi women for the screen and for our current time.
From Iraq to Michigan, Raffo transforms into a wide cross-section of Iraqi women in her inspiring exploration of love and grief within countries undone by division, violence and loss.
Nine Parts, a film by Mike Mosallam, Heather Raffo and Nilou Safinya is streaming now on PBS.

Breaking Fast (2020)
Tumblr media
Director: Mike Mosallam
Stars: Haaz Sleiman, Michael Cassidy, Amin El Gamal...
This is a movie that follows the life of Mo, a doctor living in Los Angeles who is a practicing Muslim and also gay... The film starts with him breaking up with his long-term boyfriend because his boyfriend wanted to marry a woman as a cover so his father doesn’t find out about his sexuality. Mo is portrayed as this really stuck-up guy who, even though he is so closed off, really means no harm and just has his own way of dealing with life’s traumas. His gay friend Sam is a complete opposite of him - not religious at all and very indulgent as opposed to Mo who leads a very disciplined way of life. In the course of events, Mo meets a new guy, Kal, at one of Sam’s parties and a spark happens between them. Kal then decides to spend the entire month with Mo to help him get through his fasting period of Ramadan.
At first this movie was nothing special to me, but as it progressed it became so much better. Kal was really cute and a good partner for Mo, managing to warm him up and get him out of his shell. I was also really amazed with the progression of Sam’s character! At first I have to admit his character didn’t quite sit with me because I wrongly assessed him as superficial and shallow, but boy was I wrong! His character truly shines in the second half of the movie because in the heat of the moment he managed to verbalize such deep thoughts about life that I could truly relate to. You actually start to see that his indulgent and hedonistic way of living isn’t actually shallow at all, but just his way of coping with life and I really ended up admiring his eternal optimism and the strength to look at the bright side, something that I occasionally have trouble with. The movie really leaves you thinking in some parts, especially the opinions expressed in the arguments and the whole movie itself could be seen as quite controversial, even just by first glance - it features a gay practicing Muslim. I am always interested in learning about new or different cultures to mine and in this way the movie reminded me of Minyan, with the difference being that this movie presents the Muslim community while Minyan presents the Jewish community. Also the tone of the movies are different, with Minyan being more serious and bleak while Breaking Fast was more upbeat.
To me, this movie just has a perfect balance of everything - it’s serious when it has to be, it’s fun and quirky the rest of the time. I like how it presented the themes with dignity, but at the same time had the guts to bring it down a notch and make fun of it as well without it ever becoming insulting at any point. Really great work in my opinion.
Rating: 5/5

Breaking Fast https://bit.ly/3rVoJH8   Can you be gay and a devout Muslim? Breaking Fast wrestles with that problem in, yes, an issue-driven drama tangling with concepts that rarely get an airing. The title stems from the practice of breaking the dawn-to-dusk fast required of committed Muslims during Ramadan. What fasting actually means seems to vary depending on many … Read More »

Breaking Fast (dir. Mike Mosallam) x VQFF 2020.
Set during the fasting month of Ramadan, the gay indie comedy is a pretty endearing take on the conventional rom-com formula with a fresh Muslim relationship twist starring Haaz Sleiman and Michael Cassidy as an unlikely interracial same-sex couple.
It’s a thoughtful yet pointed rumination on the conflicts of devout religious faith and modern love clashing against different cultural expectations. Most of the performances feel genuine and heartfelt or true to different personal experiences.
Screening virtually at the closing gala of the 2020 Vancouver Queer Film Festival online on August 23.
