A good day for birdwatching!
I had a fantastic bird walk today, with a few unresolved questions that @lies or someone else might be able to help me with if I’m lucky.
The walk was initially through a residential area, but I ended up on a beach. I saw at least 24 species, the highlights of which included:
red-breasted mergansers (new to me, at least since using eBird but possibly ever)
common goldeneyes
black oystercatchers (one of my top favorite birds)
a pelagic cormorant
brown pelicans
a great blue heron
a really good look at an osprey circling around near the shore
a Nuttall’s woodpecker (which is apparently previously unreported here, but I actually feel pretty confident about this ID)
a yellow-rumped warbler
a few black phoebes, both in the residential area and at the shore.
The unresolved questions:
I saw two shorebirds flying along the water’s edge, when I was slightly above. The backs and wings had a very distinctive black-and-white pattern on them, and the birds were not particularly large. I would guess they were American avocets, but that’s a bird that hasn’t been reported at that location before, and I’m not confident enough to report them as such. Is there anything else they could’ve been? Willets seem to be brown on the back with black and white only on the wings, and what I saw was definitely black and white on the back too.
I saw what I thought was a sparrow eating an apple in a tree in someone’s yard. It looked possibly like a sooty fox sparrow, but (a) that’s not the right subspecies for this location I don’t think and (b) fox sparrows eat insects, not fruit. The bird really reminded me of a hermit thrush in terms of the plumage --white breast with black spots, cinnamon near the tail-- but the beak was yellow and was a sparrow-y sort of shape.
I also saw a sparrow with a very stripey front (black on lightish) with a stripey brown puffy crown. Song sparrow? or is that not enough info to be sure?
Is it possible I’m wrong about the woodpecker? It most definitely had a black back with white horizontal stripes, and was small and a woodpecker; I didn’t notice any red on it though there could’ve been a small amount of red on the head. No other bird I’m familiar with, or that was listed in Merlin as a woodpecker or sapsucker that lives around here, seems to fit that description.

Fic: Righteous Anger
Klaine Spring Fling: regular
Words: ~1400 words
Rating: Teen and up
Summary: Our favorite missionaries brace themselves for an encounter with Elder Clarington.
This is part of my Mormon!Klaine universe. It takes place a few days after the scene I posted yesterday,Look Once.
My Mormon!Klaine Masterpost. (More recent posts are in bold.)
Notes: Elder Nixon is Warbler Trent. Elder Clarington, like his canon counterpart, is a douche bag. As such, expect incidental anti-Catholic sentiment, gender role ridiculousness, and homophobia.
––––
The day’s weather forecast predicted unseasonable warmth. Kurt broke out his short-sleeved button-ups from where they were stored in his suitcase, sliding them neatly into the drawer next to the long-sleeved ones—short-sleeved on the right, long-sleeved on the left, because otherwise they looked exactly the same and he would never be able to tell which was which without unfolding them.
He would be so glad when he returned home and could have a regular wardrobe with anything-but-regular shirts, each one different from the next. He wasn't going to keep a single white button-down from his mission, not even for sacrament meeting. He wouldn't be involved in blessing or distributing the sacrament anymore, so no one could make him. The new bishop would just have to put up with him wearing what he wanted.
“Whoa. That’s … fitted.” Elder Anderson’s eyes went wide when Kurt entered the kitchen. He was also wearing short sleeves, but they were normal missionary fit, with an inch or two of give around the bicep. Kurt’s, on the other hand, came close to cutting off his circulation when he lifted his hands above his head. He knew he’d grown since last summer—he’d let both of his winter suits out twice—but he hadn't bothered checking his summer shirts in that time. He hadn't expected to need to wear any until June, maybe even July.
“I was worried about that,” Kurt grumbled. He started to turn around. “I'll change.”
“No. You don't have to do that. It looks fine. It's not like your buttons are popping off or anything. And it's going to be really warm today.”
“I don't want to get in trouble with Elder Clarington.”
“Elder Clarington can take a long walk off a short pier.”
Kurt felt himself smirk. "Is my sass rubbing off on you?”
“I've always had sass. It's not my fault if you haven't noticed.” Elder Anderson winked. “Anyway, you could always wear your jacket around him. We won't be hanging out with him that long, and you shouldn't have to suffer through a hot day just for a few minutes with him. Besides, he might not notice.”
“Elder Clarington notices everything.”
“Well, if he notices, I'll ask him why he's staring at your hot body. That'll shut him up, right?”
Kurt snickered. “Ooh. Good way to use his homophobia against him. I like the way you think.” And, yup, Elder Anderson was definitely straight. No Mormon guy who had any inkling of same-sex attraction would be so bold in declaring his objective assessments about the visual appeal of other men. Though Kurt shouldn't let himself believe that Elder Anderson appreciated his body even on an objective level. He was just brainstorming ways to needle Elder Clarington.
They met Elder Clarington and his companion, Elder Nixon, at the bus stop near the branch building after lunch. It was already creeping toward the mid-twenty degrees Celsius by the time they arrived; Kurt had made the right choice to stick with his snug short sleeve shirt, otherwise he would've been sweating like a pig from biking the five kilometers from their previous appointment. As it was, he regretted that he had to roll down his pant legs now that he was off his bike. His calves would have appreciated the breeze.
It was good to see Elder Nixon, if not Elder Clarington. Kurt had been companions with him many transfers ago. He was unassuming and gentle, rarely speaking up unless something really irritated him. Predictably, he could hardly get in a word edgewise next to Elder Clarington. They had barely exchanged guten Tags when Elder Clarington launched into, “So how did your Catholic mass go down on Sunday, elders?”
“Ha, ha,” said Kurt. “You do know that George Frideric Handel was a Protestant, don't you?”
“Of course I knew that.” Elder Clarington’s tone belied his assertion. He didn’t know jack about Handel, or music, or what made worship ‘Catholic.’ Rumor was he had never stepped into a single historical cathedral during his entire time in Germany, because he would have no part of ‘the great and abominable church’ and ‘whore of Babylon,’ even though it was no longer official Mormon doctrine to attach those appellations to Roman Catholicism. “You still didn't answer my question.”
“We have no answer for your question,” Kurt said, trying to keep his voice even. “We didn't attend a Catholic mass on Easter.”
“But we did attend sacrament meeting. And it was wonderful,” interjected Elder Anderson. “We had so many investigators—Doro and Stefan included, of course. But also some students from our English group, and a woman we helped with moving, and—"
Elder Clarington didn't seem to be listening. His eyes passed over Kurt’s arms, but didn't linger there. They wandered up to his hair, assessing its length, then over to Elder Anderson’s hair, before finally landing on Elder Anderson’s chest. “What's up with that tie, Elder Anderson?”
Elder Nixon frowned apologetically.
“It’s a … tie?” Elder Anderson said.
“It has pink in it." Elder Clarington said this like it was a significant fact. "Pink is a girl’s color.”
It barely had pink in it. Just thin pink pinstripes against a light blue background. Besides— “Pink isn't a girl’s color,” said Elder Anderson. “Colors don't have gender. And it's perfectly acceptable under the dress code.”
“No, it's not. You're not supposed to wear anything that would distract from the message. Wearing pink is like announcing you're gay, and I don't know why you would want to confuse people like that when you’re not and the church doesn't condone that behavior. Just ask your companion. He struggles with same-sex attraction and, while don’t completely understand why the prophet would send someone like that on a mission, I find comfort in the fact that at least he dresses appropriately. I have never seen him wear pink, because he knows this is a mission and we are representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ. You are going to confuse investigators.”
Elder Anderson looked like he’d forgotten how to exhale. His lips were pursed and the edges of the ears were as red as lava. “With all due respect, Elder Clarington, keep Elder Hummel and your thinly veiled homophobia out of this. If you don't like my tie, fine. But you have no valid reason in your role as zone leader to criticize it—or Elder Hummel.”
Elder Nixon flashed a secretive smile at Kurt. I like him, he mouthed.
Kurt’s heart pitter-pattered. It always thought of his companion as … not exactly a pushover. More like, accommodating to a fault. This side of Blaine? Direct and full of righteous anger? Kurt liked it.
“And,” Elder Anderson continued, “I would appreciate if you don't bring that hostile attitude of yours into your baptismal interview with our investigators. They are very nice people and deserve to be treated with respect.”
“Hey," Elder Clarington said, holding his hands up like he was trying to wave back a barking dog. "I respect investigators. I respect you. I just want to make sure that you are respectful of your role as a missionary, Elder Anderson. Clearly, we have a different understanding of what that means. But since it's just a tie, I won't report it to President Steele.”
Elder Nixon finally spoke up. “Oh, come on, Elder Clarington. You know President Steele would give you the biggest, longest lecture of your life if you wasted his time with that. We both know the real reason he named you a district leader is because you complained about everybody else’s leadership so much, he wanted you to learn the hard way how difficult it is to do the job.”
“That's not true!” Elder Clarington’s cheeks flamed red. “He was inspired. Leaders make their decisions by inspiration.”
"And you don't think God could inspire President Steele to put you in your place?” Elder Nixon was on fire. It was beautiful to see. Elder Anderson was right. There really was a difference between self-centered anger and righteous anger. “Now, can you stop berating our fellow missionaries so we can get on with what we're here to do, which is to help their baptismal candidates move closer to the covenant path?”
“Ugh. The three of you. You’re, like, the kumbaya choir, aren't you? Whatever. You all are boring me." And then, as if it had been his idea all along, Elder Clarington added, “Let's stop wasting time and go do God’s work.”

My favorite Klaine fics written by Amberlovesocean/Cleverboots
Oceanlovesamber/Cleverboots (also known as GrandmaCleverBoots) wrote numerous Klaine fics over 8.5 years. I like all her fics so it was super hard to come up with this list of favorites. The story titles link you to AO3.
Bound for Glory (also on FF.net)
Kurt is assaulted after singing at a school dance and is left for dead, thrown aboard an empty train car at the railroad freight yard to hide the crime.
He wakes up to find he's been tossed off the car somewhere in an Oregon logging camp, 2500 miles from home. A curly-haired kid named Blaine finds Kurt and protects him by hiding him in his cabin and teaching him how to survive.
My note: This was perhaps her most popular series. Totalling 467k words, it will keep you entertained for a very long time. She wrote to me that her grandchildren helped inspire her in the later stories when Kurt and Blaine become parents.
~~~~~
The Kurt Project  (also on FF.net)
Blaine and the Warblers have set up a hotline loosely based on The Trevor Project to help confused and depressed gay, lesbian, bi and trans kids in Lima and Westerville. One night before the hotline is fully operational, Blaine is alone in the building - no supporting therapists, counsellors, or other professionals to help and he hasn't had his peer counselling training yet.
Blaine answers the phone to find a distraught boy on the other end, and all the boy wants is a pair of warm socks before he jumps into the icy white water flowing under the bridge to end his life.
~~~~~
The Beach House (also on FF.net)
Kurt is rushing home in a thunderstorm and finds a small boy cowering in fear from the storm.
Blaine goes to pick up his son from daycare only to find they have left him behind when the storm hit.
Can one little boy reunite two estranged lovers who have lost their way in the world? A trip to an isolated beach house on the coast of Maine might be the answer they're looking for.
~~~~~
Volunteer Angel (also on FF.net)
This is a story of recurring destiny. Kurt is trying to cobble together a new reason to live after losing his mother and grandmother. He finds himself in a nursing home, applying to become a Volunteer Angel to cheer up the elderly residents of the home. Kurt hears a voice singing a song he never heard before, but for some reason he knows all the words. Perplexed, he finds the man and steps into a different world when the man turns into more than Kurt had known was possible.
~~~~~
Room In The Attic (also on FF.net)
While working a summer job with Puck, Kurt finds a pigeon with a message tied to its leg, written in blood. The race is on for the two boys to find and save the victim of a cruel imprisonment and sneak him to safety. The deception doesn't end there as Kurt finds himself lying to his father to try and save Blaine's life as help comes from a most unusual source.
Sequel: Room for Two Hearts (Sequel to A Room in the Attic)

The spring wildflowers are out in force now! Warbler Ridge in spring might just be my favorite place on Earth! The sunshine, the breeze, and the carpets of wildflowers were heaven this morning. There are spring beauties, dutchman's britches, squirrel corn, violets, trout lilies, toothwort, rue anemones, bristly buttercup, yellow violets, phlox, and oxalis. The may apples have emerged, though it should be another week or two before they bloom, and the trillium is getting really close to blooming.
We hiked about 4 miles along the Warbler Loop and Cemetery Ridge trails. Someone is doing restoration work in the cemetery, putting fallen gravestones back in place, repairing broken headstones, and cleaning grave markers. There was even a new headstone that I don't remember from last time I was up there.

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Tabula Rasa
Tabula Rasa has 8 stories at Gossamer, but there are even more X-Files fics at AO3 and her website. She writes Mulder and Scully in a very lovely way. I've recced 3 of my favorites of her fics here before: Bird in Snow, Fall: East on M St, and Skuamorph. Big thanks to Tabula Rasa for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
I'm always extremely pleasantly surprised to get kudos (or, very rarely, a comment) on my old fic, but I'm always happy to see it! I did post them all (I think) to AO3. I'm not surprised people are still reading fic, though. It's an iconic show and now with streaming, it's really easy to watch older shows and natural to want fic about them!
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
XF was my first fandom, definitely my first online fandom, and so it will always have a special place in my heart. Also... I had a great time! I stumbled upon and joined the Scullyfic email list by accident, but it was the best thing I could have done. I learned a lot about how to be a writer and how to be in fandom, and those lessons are still important to me. Foundational. Also, in terms of modern fandom drama, XF was more low-key on the drama (although it didn't seem like it at the time!). But I learned something that's always served me well: find like-minded people, and hang out with them. Don't worry about the rest.
Also... you can't control the show, but you kind of can control the canon.
Because of Scully, I ended up taking a forensic anthropology class in university-- and now I have a Master's in a forensic science! Part of the Scully Effect, and proud of it!
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
Definitely mostly email list! I never really got the hang of message boards. Posting fic was exhausting, and tbh I never figured out how to work Ephemeral. I checked it every day, though! I loved, after a new episode, everyone sending in their thoughts and reading everyone's experiences together. Fandom was a lot more work back then, tbh!
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
That fic can be just as good, or better, than traditionally published works. There are works of XF fic that have stuck with me for years now, far more than some books I've read. That fan writers can know the characters better than the show writers. The fandom in general was really smart, and mostly more adult than me (I joined fandom when I went away to college, so I always felt at the younger end of the scale. That was good though!).
Also, my first time reading and writing porn. Not gonna lie, I was shocked the first time I accidentally read smut. But I adjusted fast. lol
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
I was still a kid (now we would say preteen) when the show premiered- I think in middle school. But I was already into ghosts, aliens, monsters, solving mysteries, and I'd already imprinted on the dynamic thanks to Square One (really)! I was also just old enough to start developing celebrity crushes. Hilariously, I did not twig to the fact that I'm bisexual the entire time I was in XF fandom, despite having enormous crushes on BOTH Mulder and Scully. Ahhhh!
Also, my whole family was into the show, but I was definitely the one with the hyperfixation. I used to take notes and record the episodes as I watched. It just had the right stuff and hit at the right time. And I've always been obsessive.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
As a kid I also really liked Star Trek, and someone had given my dad a book about the history of Star Trek, which I read. This included mentions of fandom and fanfic. As soon as I had a private-- and perhaps more importantly fast-- internet connection (in college), I went looking for XF fanfic, and that was that. Hooked immediately. Also I shipped them A LOT so that's what I went looking for.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
I tend to not go back to a fandom once I have a new fandom, so I wouldn't say I'm in it. I did hang around the edges for the revival, of course, because I wanted to experience that with the same people, but since the revival was mostly not that great (with a few exceptions), I didn't get pulled back into it. But I still think of the people I knew in the fandom a lot, and always hope they're doing well.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
I've never left fandom, and I've been in a BUNCH: Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Bandom, Supernatural, now CQL/The Untamed and other Chinese-media fandoms, with many smaller ones in between or on the side. I feel like at their core fandoms tend to be similar, although where you host the fandom makes a big difference: Livejournal, tumblr, twitter. I think that because fandoms now tend to be bigger and more diverse (which is good) there tends to be more wank (which is bad). In some of them I was close to a group of people, some of them not. Honestly the best thing is when someone you know from an old fandom is in your new fandom. It's so much fun. I have really good friends thanks to fandom, and I've had them for YEARS. Like. 15 years.
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
I tend to focus more on ships than characters, but some of my all-time favs: Scully, Hermione, Sirius Black, Castiel, Lan Wangji, Xie Lian. That's just fandom-oriented ones, otherwise we'd be here all day. :D
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
I don't often rewatch episodes any more, although if I come across an ep on tv I might. I definitely still think about them though! For example, I'm a teacher now, and just a couple weeks ago one of my colleagues mentioned he'd heard the students saying they shipped two of their classmates, and he was like "Ship? I don't get it" and I was like "HOO BOY, do I have a story for you!" And I explained how shipping came from XF fandom, and why. That was fun. I definitely still think about Mulder and Scully too-- I mean, they're cultural touchstones, so they do come up sometimes in greater pop culture. Also, I was in Hannibal fandom for a while, and Gillian Anderson is still The Best.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
I haven't read XF fic in years, even the ones I remember as being really significant/important to me. I still have my all-time favs saved on an external HD though! Fic in another fandom- every day lol.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
Blinded by White Light by DashaK has stuck with me. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the Ruby-Throated Warbler by I forget I'm so sorry -- that's lasted as my ideal post-canon MSR and as an interesting and different way to tell a story.  [Lilydale note: It’s by rah.] I was always thrilled to see fic by Brandon, JET, MaybeAmanda, Syntax6... and, frankly, everyone on the Scullyfic/ Emuse list. So many talented people in that fandom!
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
Things Outside, which is the only thing I've ever written based on a dream, and I'm really satisfied with it. It was hard to write but so much fun to revel in the weirdness. I always kind of wanted to write more because I know a lot more about the situation, but otoh, I like the open, ambiguous ending (usually I am very HEA).
In other fandoms, King & Country in bandom (MCR) and in Supernatural I'm very proud of Hope and Clay. I struggle to write casefics even though I love to read them, but that one really worked out.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
I don't think I'll ever write something new. There is an old fic that may be done but it was smut so I was too shy to post it at the time. In theory if I find it and it's decent, I could post it!
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
I do! I write fic very slowly, but I do write still! I have a million ideas for stories, but I'm so slow at the actual writing part.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
I usually take a jumping-off point from canon, or of course, something I need to fix or expand on. Or sometimes I start telling myself a story as I fall asleep and the idea grabs me long enough I can manage to write it.
What's the story behind your pen name?
I was getting into fandom and realized people didn't use their real names. I flipped through my history book looking for inspiration, and decided tabula rasa was a great name for a writer. I tend to add an X because it's rare to get "tabularasa" as a username, and the X is indeed for X-Files (so I'm something like tabulaxrasa most places). I usually go by Tabula Rasa or Tab, though. And I still use it because 1) it IS a great name for a writer; and 2) it's not fandom-specific so I can keep it in every fandom.
I identify with it so much I have answered to this name in class (oops). I have a "Tab" t-shirt (as in the soda, but I have worn it to Comic-Con for ease of ID-- better than a nametag!). And my mom got me a necklace with a "tab" typewriter key as a charm, which I adore. Yes, I have accidental merch of myself.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
As you can tell from the above, my family knows (my family being my parents and sister). They are supportive! I think my mom read a couple stories? But obviously she has to know the fandom to get it... I got my sister into fic, and we even wrote a couple fics together (in Gundam Wing). She's a lot more selective about fandoms, but she's joined fandoms on her own, too. She's just not in one constantly, like me. :p
I tend not to tell not-online friends unless I have felt them out and know they're super fannish, or they bring it up first.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Most of my old fic is now on AO3 and I hang out on twitter a lot, @tabula_x_rasa
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
I'm really glad people are still in this fandom! It will always be so important to me. Thank you Lilydale, for this nostalgia trip!

First Lines Meme
@klaineharmony tagged me and I love a good game. This’ll actually cover all the fandoms I’ve written for, too, so I’m excited to see if my tone shifts much from place to place.
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favorite authors!
Most recent first:
1. “As much as she loved a quiet meal at home with her family, Shelagh appreciated their monthly invitations to dinner at Nonnatus House.” - Points of Contact, Call the Midwife
2. “Shelagh wasn’t sure she had ever heard a sound more beautiful than the click of the bedroom door knob as it unlatched to admit her husband.” - Special Delivery, Call the Midwife
3. “Shelagh had thought she was above eavesdropping in corners in Nonnatus House after Trixie and Cynthia had roped her into their spying on Jenny and Alec all those years ago, but apparently, some things stayed with you.” - What’s in a Name?, Call the Midwife
4. “She didn’t want to, but Shelagh eventually succumbed to the force of her waking mind.” - Remember Me, Call the Midwife
5. “Sister Bernadette rubbed her thumb back and forth over the knuckles of her other hand, trying to focus on keeping a steady rhythm as the car slowly made its way toward Nonnatus House.” - With Open Arms, Call the Midwife
Midpost callout on myself: Hey girl, you really love establishing your POV character from the fucking get-go, huh?
6. “Jack and Davey had a plan.” - There’s This Secret Escape Plan I’ve Got, Newsies
7.”’This is absolutely the hardest part of being in a poly relationship,’ Kath said, flopping backwards onto the mattress.” - Triptych, Newsies
8. “None of them like winter, though their reasons and reactions differ.” - Hold Each Other., Newsies
9. “’What’s Santa Fe got that New York ain’t?’” - Just Be Real (Is All I’m Askin’), Newsies
10. “Jack was on top of the world.” - We Just Might Win, Newsies
11. “Katherine was almost ashamed of how long it took her to realize what she was feeling.” - We Will Find A Way, Newsies
12. “A warm hand slipping into his made Archie stop in the middle of the school hallway.” - Awareness, Riverdale
13. “’Rachel, help. I’m attached to Blaine.’” - Klaine Advent 2017, Glee (This is just the first line of my first prompt fill, obvi.)
14. “’Don’t be sorry,’ Archie says, pulling Ethel into a hug they both need.” - I Won’t Ever Let You Go, Riverdale
15. “Diana is accustomed to seeing Steve’s ghost.” - Presence, Wonder Woman (2017)
16. “’Attention, Warblers!’ Sebastian’s voice rang out from the balcony, prompting everyone on the lower floor to look up at the head of their organization.” - Restored, Glee
17. “Blaine spread his arms and inhaled deeply, enjoying a rare day of Fall warmth in Ohio.” - Stay With Me, Glee
18. “’I’m so excited!’ Blaine said, swinging his and Kurt’s joined hands higher than strictly necessary as they walked up the stairs of the subway station.” - Game Plan, Glee
19. “’Oh, goddammit,’ Kurt said, staring down at the narrow yet surprisingly deep crack in the pavement below the bleachers.” - What You Need, Glee
20. “When the buzzing and ringing of his phone alarm finally become impossible to sleep through, Kurt had to restrain himself from just flinging his phone out the window in annoyance.” - Here With You, Glee
My callout remains true: I really love establishing a POV and really just starting in medias res with my fic. Probably because I don’t have to establish a universe like an original author does, you know? We can just cut to the chase.
I think my favorite is either the opening of my first Klaine Advent fill or the first line of “What’s in a Name?” just for the nostalgia of the old Nonnatus days.
Idk if I know ten authors who haven’t been tagged! @knightsofthegaytable @chaossmagic @spookytrixiefranklin @bobasbook Do the thing!

Hello im reading constantly like 24/7 and l almost read all fics on archive so l was wondering if you recommend your best fics on fanfiction.net preferably long ones thank you
I manage a community on Fanfction.net called Klaine Fiction: Reviewers' Choice. I try to keep it current with fics I enjoyed reading. You can sort by word count to find the lengthy fics. While you’re there, you can check out my own fics under the user name VoyageAsia. I have four fics over the 100k word count (I don’t tend to mark my own fics as favorites)
Here are a few fics that might not be listed in the community, mainly because I haven’t read them, but other readers highly rate them. - HKVoyage

My note: Crowded House is in my top ten Klaine fics of all time. Kellyb321 posted the first chapter in January 2013. It is now 894k words over 115 chapters! The updates have slowed down, but when a new chapter is posted, it is long. The story is coming to a conclusion, so I think you could read it without worried about it not finished. I suspect if you leave reviews as you read, it will spur Kellyb321 to continue writing!

so i've got some (unpopular?) opinions on glee competitions:
s2 sectionals is my least favorite ND performance (except maybe for the gangnam style situation). i was so glad that rachel wouldn't be on the spotlight for once, but then quinn and sam were SO boring that i was begging for her to come back.
don't come for me, but i didn't love valerie either. i was thrilled to see my girl santana get her solo, but i don't like this song (mike and brittany were perfect though).
the warblers were so superior in s4 sectionals. they deserved the win despite marley's fainting.
speaking of it, i love how the warblers perform relying so much on their voices and harmonies, and using few to no instruments at all. i wish the new directions did that sometimes too.
fly/i believe i can fly is one of my favorite numbers ever, and this may or may not have to do with santana and blaine rapping.
this is debatable, but in my opinion the troubletones were better than the new directions during s3 sectionals. their vocals, dancing and song choice were on point. if they needed the TT to lose for plot purposes, they shouldn't have made their performance so good.
i found vocal adrenaline's setlist in nationals s3... questionable, to say the least. starships was kind of weird (higher than any other?). knowing jesse, the choices didn't feel like something he'd put together, and didn't showcase that epic feel VA had in prior seasons.
i know journey songs became somewhat of a joke in the glee fandom, but s1 regionals medley is just... *chef's kiss*.
that's it, i'm currently rewatching the show and i'm about halfway season 4. let's see the upcoming performances and i might do a part 2 if i have something to say about those.

On my Way and Big Brother? :D
big brother answered here! so for on my way...
My favorite song: gotta be Cough Syrup, no contest. tbh this might be my least favorite competition set list ever lmao. and that's including the warblers' songs too. it is not a good bunch imo :/
My favorite quote: "New plan. I'm going to fake an epileptic seizure" "You're not an epileptic" "That's why I'm going to fake it"
My favorite moment: Kurt's scene with Karofsky in the hospital. Also the deleted scene where Quinn tells Rachel she's too young to get married
My least favorite moment: this ep is such a mess holy shit. finn gets an embarrassing photoshopped pic of himself, which is the worst torment any of the glee kids have ever faced. karofsky gets outed and tries to kill himself. which makes finn and rachel realize life is short and they want to get married asap 💀 there's a fucking competition. a would be wedding. and quinn gets into a car crash. oh my god it sounds like 5 different chapters of a shitty fanfic lmao
My favorite character: Kurt bc of course. Karofsky harassed him for years and he still goes to visit him in the hospital with flowers to tell him that this isn't the end of the world and gives him hope for the future. If you hate Kurt... what are you doing??

Blaine Solos Ranked
With the success of the Kurt Solos Ranked, I thought I’d see if I could do Blaine’s as well.  Which has become an interesting and complicated endeavor.
First of all - there’s the whole issue of what constitutes as a solo -- especially when he often times has an entire back up group singing along with him.  Things like the Warbler numbers I counted -- because he sings the lead in the song by himself.  Not counted are group numbers where he is featured - such as Hey Jude and This Is the New Year.  Mostly, I stuck to what Glee Wiki counts as a solo, so if you have issues, take it up with them.
Secondly, when ranking Kurt solos, I took a lot into account of how heavily the song ties Kurt’s story.  While nearly all of Kurt’s solos tie in with his story, the Blaine solos don’t always do so.  So, mostly this is just what I think of them.
Thirdly, the Blaine fans that I have met are, well, fairly passionate about his music, so I want to say this.  There aren’t really any bad Blaine solos.  Unlike Will and Tina, who were subjected to poor song choices, Blaine’s performances, across the board, are pretty stellar.  So, I’d like to remind everyone that this list is pretty arbitrary and based on my subjective biases.
So going in - take the list as it is, just a fun look at how one person ranks the solos. :)
Btw - the trivia on Glee wiki says that Blaine sings 31 solos, but I only found 29 -- do they mean the two songs added to the Warblers CD? Or am I missing a couple??
29. I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You (Prom Queen)
Tumblr media
Look at the list of Blaine solos, and arranging it to a list of things I like more than other things, this just kept sinking down and down.  The biggest reason is that I just don’t like the song.  Yup, that’s it.  Nothing exciting about that really.  But I suppose adding to that is the fact that this performance feels way more Darren than it does Blaine, and that the onscreen performance is mostly Finn and Jesse fighting over Rachel.  As I said earlier, there’s nothing /bad/ about any of Blaine’s solo, I just like all the rest more.
28. Piano Man (Movin’ Out)
Tumblr media
This is a perfectly fine albeit generic rendition of this number.  So, here’s my thing about this one - when they did Piano Man in season one, not only did the song fit a bit more into context with Will and Bryan Ryan being somewhat washed up losers, there was a grittiness in not only the song but the visuals as well, and we get to do something that TV can do, which is transport us into the atmosphere of the song.  By the time Blaine gets to do this number, all of that context and TV atmosphere has been kind of washed away.  And this feels like a number that everyone would have fun singing at Darren’s piano bar because it’s a classic, and less because it has relevance to any of the story.
Look - a lot of these numbers are fun numbers just for the heck of it, but since they had already done this one, and since this is supposed to take place of the NYADA audition, I’m marking it down.  You can do a lot with this song, and this performance, mostly, didn’t.
27. Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Tumblr media
This is another one where I just am not a fan of the original song, and I don’t go back to listen to it very often.  That said - it is super fun to see Blaine joining all the clubs and being super interactive in school, even if it’s tinged with the sadness that he and Kurt aren’t connecting much these days.
26. Bills, Bills, Bills (The Sue Sylvester Shuffle)
Tumblr media
This one has grown on me over the years.  It is a bit random - the Warblers’ singing an impromptu (and somewhat obligatory) Destiny’s Child song for the Superbowl episode.  It has zero story resonance.  But it is hilarious to see how much furniture Darren Blaine stands on during the number.  If nothing else, the number is fun, and the Warblers look like they’re enjoying the hell out of doing it.
25. When I Get You Alone (Silly Love Songs)
Tumblr media
This one, still, is one of the cringiest things they did on the show.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s hilariously ridiculous, and Blaine singing to a dude in The Gap about sex toys is just, well, something memorable.  It also is getting points for Kurt’s annoyed looks and Darren’s pink sunglasses.  But overall, it still makes me uncomfortable to watch.
24. Fighter (Big Brother)
Tumblr media
So, mostly, this just isn’t a song I like all that much.  Vocally, Blaine sounds fine on it - and does a decent job with it.  That said, I can’t take it as seriously as I’m supposed to.  There’s something I find unintentionally hilarious about this little, teenage grandpa angsting over his brother.  I know it’s got the infamous shower sequence in here - and I get it, I do.  But the fact that I can’t keep from giggling through it is why it’s a bit lower than the rest.
23. Against All Odds (Guilty Pleasures)
Tumblr media
First of all, I’ve always confused by the debate about this song.  It’s clearly for Sam, because Blaine’s an intense guy with intense emotions, and any song he sings for a person he has feelings for is going to be intense.  Go back and watch When I Get You Alone -- that was intense for a dude he got coffee with twice.  I love Blaine (and Darren) with a piano and his voice, and this is one of the ones that was performed live, so that’s cool.  Not my favorite Phil Collins’s number - so that’s mostly the reason for the position here.  Also not the most visually engaging.  But the song is performed well.
22. Hopelessly Devoted to You (The Role You Were Born to Play)
Tumblr media
I’ve never realized just how many angsty Blaine songs he has in his canon.  It’s kind of like the equivalent of Kurt crying through his solos.  He does it well, and I don’t really have any faults for this one.  It’s visually entertaining as well as sounding pretty good.  But not a favorite song of mine, and therefore just gets notched a bit lower.
21. Last Friday Night (Pot o Gold)
Tumblr media
I actually really like this song, even if I’ve probably heard it enough to be fine with not hearing it again for a long time.  The performance is cute - there’s a nice high energy about it (with the exception of Santana’s dower expression during the whole thing because random season 3 conflict).  However, this is kind of the height of whole Jukebox Blaine thing, where he’s trotted out to sing the hot new single of the summer, and then we just stash him away in the background to sit next to Kurt platonically until he’s needed again.  I like the song and the performance, but am frustrated by the gratuitous context.
20. It's Not Unusual (The Purple Piano Project)
Tumblr media
This one is flirty and high energy and Blaine looks super cute dancing on the stairs.  I don’t really have any faults for this number.  But I’m not particularly emotionally attached to it, either, so so in the middle it goes.
19. Hey, Soul Sister (Special Education)
Tumblr media
I unabashedly love this song - even though I feel like I’m not supposed to since it was way, way over played when it was popular.  But I do.  The performance, however, isn’t the Warblers’ best -- across the board I feel like competition numbers rarely are -- and I’d argue it’s one of Blaine’s weaker vocal performances (sorry Darren), but it’s still fun, and the arrangements for the Warbler songs have always been pretty stellar.
18. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (Michael)
Tumblr media
While the song itself is a bit strange, and while I’ve never been a huge MJ fan (sorry my dudes), I think this number is a lot of fun.  It’s visually pretty entertaining, and I love the second half where they bring in all of the different styles MJ had donned over the years.  It’s vocally pretty stagnant, so Blaine doesn’t have to do much here, but it’s about the spectacle anyway - and I enjoy what they did with it.
17. Something’s Coming
Tumblr media
It’s always nice to hear Blaine do a Broadway number to give us a break from the mostly pop music he sings.  While not Blaine’s strongest number vocally (he struggles just a little more on the Broadway ones), I love that he brings the stage alive when it’s just him singing.  He’s incredibly visually engaging, and what he may lack (a little) with the vocals he makes up in energy and enthusiasm, which is always a joy to watch.  Plus, there’s something particularly more attractive about early season 3 Blaine (possibly the fluffier, less gelled hair) that adds a nice touch.
16. Not While I'm Around (Bash)
Tumblr media
Interestingly, the studio version of this song has everyone on it, and I’m so glad they let Blaine sing it on his own - because I feel it’s much more impactful that way.  Not only is this the only real insight we get into Blaine’s head during this episode, but it’s raw and emotional (in a good way), and that adds to story unfolding on our screen.  This might be, perhaps, the shortest number on the list, but its impact is stronger than a lot of the other numbers on the list, which is why I enjoy it a lot more.
15. Beauty School Dropout (Glease)
Tumblr media
My favorite Broadway number that Blaine does on the show.  I kind of love that there’s a lot going on during this song.  Not only is Blaine doing an amazing Teen Angel, there’s the moment in the middle Blaine sees Kurt, and the layered look on Blaine’s face as he tries to hold it together is pretty remarkable.  It’s one of my favorite acting moments from Darren, and one of my favorite times the story of the characters is layered over a seemingly disconnected performance.  Plus, Blaine sounds fantastic on this catchy little number.
14. Silly Love Songs (Silly Love Songs)
Tumblr media
This is one of those charming Warbler numbers that doubles as an ending feature that actually gives relevance to the story of the episode.  It’s cute and sweet and flirty and fun and everyone gets something interesting to do during it.  I don’t have a lot of commentary to add about it - but it’s a classic for a reason, and because of that, it deserves a higher spot on the list.
13. You're My Best Friend (Puppet Master)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure I fully understand the casts’ aversion to the puppets (though I’ll acknowledge that it’s probably weird to perform with a puppet of yourself).  That said, this number is kinda cool visually, and a nice break from what can be tedious choir room songs at this point in the series.  I also enjoy the song and think Blaine sounds nice on it.  Plus - Blaine totally has a backup career in children’s programming if he ever desired.  It is weird that Blaine’s singing to puppets in the first place, but I do adore this one.
12. Don't Stop Me Now (Diva)
Tumblr media
I enjoy that Blaine’s version of being a diva is just adding a leather jacket and pants to a number he performs exactly the same otherwise.  Again, not much to comment on here, but I love the song, and Blaine sounds great on it, and while it isn’t hugely impactful to his story, I like that it shows Blaine being the ambitious little go-getter that he is.
11. Misery (Original Song)
Tumblr media
This is another one of those songs that I unironically love.  It is the most upbeat song about being miserable that I’ve ever heard, and while a lot of this song has to do with Kurt and his own mental state, has there ever been a more perfect song for Blaine? (well, yes but I’d digress if I went on about that.)  I love so much about this song, from the choreography to Blaine’s obliviousness with Kurt as the number progresses.  It’s fun and energetic and the most entertaining a subject as misery can get.
10. Cough Syrup (On My Way)
Tumblr media
This might be the most controversial pick on the list, since I know for a lot of Blaine fans, this is their favorite number.  I think it validates what a lot of people had been thinking - that there’s a lot going on underneath the surface of an outwardly peppy and energetic Blaine Anderson.  And, I do like this song, and find it haunting -- it’s much different than the songs Blaine usually sings.  It’s more emotional and tortured, and it’s fascinating to watch him sing his way through it.  That said, the actual performance of this I rarely ever watch.  It’s laid over Karofsky’s suicide attempt, and I find that sequence incredibly difficult to watch.  So, while I do think a lot of the praise this song gets is completely valid, I can’t claim that it’s my favorite.  I’m giving it an obligatory spot at #10 because I do think it deserves to be acknowledged as one of Blaine’s best solos.
9. It's Not Alright but It's Okay (Dance With Somebody)
Tumblr media
Funny enough, as just a song, this isn’t one of my favorites.  But I love, love what this song does.  Clearly, by now I’m sure you’ve figured out, I love performances that have a lot of layers to them - and this one definitely does.  There’s a great duality going on here between the awkward sadness that Blaine actually sings in the choir room versus the controlled anger that Blaine displays during his own fantasy.  (It’s also one half of a conversation with Kurt that gets resolved when Kurt sings I Have Nothing later on.)  I love the complexity of emotion that goes on during this one, and it remains one of my favorite performances on the show.
8. My Dark Side (Dynamic Duets)
Tumblr media
Yes, this song is amazing! Again, another one of those performances that has a ton packed in it -- that has the additional quality of sounding and looking fantastic.  I love that this song is entirely about Blaine, and where he is in his life.  We get more tortured Blaine, but this time it’s in a more upbeat, pop-y song that suits Blaine incredibly well.  But mostly, I love his interaction with the Warblers during it, the choreography is brilliant as they slowly start to bring him back in as their leader - and that moment where he parts them and he walks down the center reclaiming his position.  There’s a lot to unpack here, as it easily meshes with the themes of the episode - of dark vs light and of heroes not always being heroic (but worth it anyway).  I love when there’s deeper symbolism in a performance, and this has a ton of that.
7. All of Me (The Untitled Rachel Berry Project)
Tumblr media
Look, it’s probably no secret that I really love Blaine (and Darren) just sitting at a piano singing.  And I really love this song in general, too.  Blaine’s last solo on the show (unfortunately!) is as tortured as many of the others on this list, but the thing that stands out for me about this one is its simplicity.  It’s just Blaine by himself, working out how he feels about his situation through song.  It’s not really meant to be heard by Kurt (or anyone else) but it’s also a shame that so rarely Blaine gets to let his real emotions be on display, which he does here.  The performance is also beautifully shot, and intentionally evocative of another infamous Blaine solo that’s a little higher on the list.
6. Raise Your Glass (Original Song)
Tumblr media
This is quintessential Warblers, and quintessential performance Blaine.  This song is amazing on its own, truly.  But the Warblers bring so much warmth and joy to it -- it’s such an engaging and energetic song, I often listen to it as a pick me up.  No - this isn’t essential to Blaine’s character story, but I think it represents all the fun and ridiculousness Blaine and the Warblers arc brought to the show.
5. Somewhere Only We Know (Born This Way)
Tumblr media
There’s something hauntingly beautiful about this one.  Blaine (and the Warblers) sound great on it, and it’s the beginning of Blaine having a tortured and emotional underbelly to his personality.  But more so, this song is about endings, and this is a turning point in Kurt’s and Klaine’s story as we say goodbye to Dalton and move on with the rest of Kurt’s journey.  And it’s a dialogue between Kurt and Blaine, despite the sea of people around them, things are changing between them for better and for worse and for... just growing up, and this song encapsulates that beautifully.
4. All You Need is Love (Love, Love, Love)
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, this one is 100% about the context within the show.  When I first heard the song, when it was released before the episode, it was kinda like - cool, Darren’s singing a Beatles cover.  But the actual performance, the fact that this is essentially a love letter to the Klaine story, makes it one of the most precious and romantic numbers in the entire show.  Blaine pulls out all the stops for Kurt here, and I can never just watch the performance, but always continue on to the proposal as well.  It’s a beautiful performance, and a beautiful moment for Klaine and an utter highlight for the show itself.
3. It’s Time (The New Rachel)
Tumblr media
Perhaps a number I’ve seen more than any other, I just love this number so much. Yes, it’s a good song.  Yes, Blaine sounds great on it.  And yes, the choreography is a ton of fun.   But it’s also Blaine, very much himself, torn between being a child and growing up.  There’s an unspoken dialogue between Kurt and Blaine during this song, about moving on from being stuck, and while this number is very childlike in it’s choreography, the subject matter is a little more mature -- being about moving on from the places your feel safe and journeying out in the world to be the person you’re supposed to be.  There’s also a duality here -- where Blaine is stuck in the childlike land of high school as Kurt moves on to college and New York.  This is another turning point in their story (as is all the songs done on these steps for these two), and I absolutely love that.  But, it shouldn’t be discounted that it is a really good song that Blaine sounds really good on -- which is why it makes it one of Blaine’s best solos.
2. Teenage Dream Acoustic (The Break Up)
Tumblr media
I’m sure that no one is surprised this at the top of the list. But what I can’t stress enough is that this is, hands down, one of the best performances done on the show period.  Katy Perry’s original version of Teenage Dream is a trashy, forgettable pop song.  What Darren Criss did with it is nothing short of magical.  But then to bring this arrangement and add in his most phenomenal acting performance, even if it did break all of our hearts.  The thing I love especially about the show version (vs the studio version) is that we get to see Blaine slowly break down and become unraveled while singing it.  The performer that Blaine is starts to break down and this performance becomes an utter mess -- which makes it all the more powerful, moving, and heartbreaking.  I love everything that this number chooses to be -- from exposing Blaine’s character, to the breaking of the fairy tale romance that is Klaine, to letting it be an end of one thing while the beginning of another.
Meanwhile, on another note, I’ve heard Darren sing this enough in his own performances that I have somewhat disassociated this version with the Klaine break up - but that doesn’t make this arrangement less powerful.  Darren took a somewhat throwaway song and made something uniquely beautiful with it -- and that’s incredibly special, too.
1. Teenage Dream (Never Been Kissed)
Tumblr media
I’m sure you’re gasping with surprise.  But, this is no. 1 for a reason.  While I think the acoustic version is better sounding (there’s just a tad too much auto tune here for reasons I’m unsure about), this number is the epitome of all Blaine numbers.  It’s his introduction to the show, and so much of Blaine’s character was cultivated out of this performance.  On top of that -- this performance made Kurt alive again, and it’s the beginning of a wild and beautiful story that would be the Klaine love story.  It also became a major hit for the show - thrusting the music of Glee to a height that it never really could match again.
The scene is iconic and classic.  The song is iconic and classic.  Everything that is Blaine and the Klaine love story is wrapped up in this one.  And every time I come back to it, I can’t help but smile - which is why this one remains at the top spot for me.

Top 5 favorite things you’ve written - drop some links!
This is always so difficult. I love all of my stories for different reasons, and you might get five different favorites from me on any given day. For this particular set, I decided to do five different fandoms.
Mending Our Mistakes (Little Women, Jo/Laurie)
After Beth's passing, Jo and Laurie do their best to mend their friendship and, perhaps, finally become something more.
'Til The Stars That Were There Before Return Above You (MCU, Steve Rogers/Peggy Carter)
Peggy goes to the Stork Club for her date with Steve, as a private memorial. But Fate and Time - and Steve himself - give her a second chance.
A Warblers' Reunion (Glee, Kurt/Blaine)
When Wes and David plan a Warblers' ten-year reunion and ask Kurt and Blaine to sing, the two Broadway stars know their friends are scheming. They decide to do some scheming and plan some surprises of their own. (This was started after season 2, and so is mostly wish fulfillment based off that season, though there are tidbits and references from S3 as well.)
Tilting Off the Edge of the World (Chronicles of Narnia, Pevensies)
An experiment in world-crossing, in which one of @rthstewart’s Peters (of the RAF and the French vineyards) finds himself confronted with an England and siblings that are his own, yet not his own – Almyra’s Edmund and Susan.
(I wrote this ten years ago for Rth, and I still can't believe it's been that long. I think this is my favorite out of all the Narnia things I've written.)
We'll Be There To Defend One Another (Newsies, Sarah/Jack, David/Jack, David/Kath, Sarah & Katherine)
Sarah Jacobs is in love with Jack Kelly. She knows (though she shouldn't) that her brother David is also in love with Jack. Katherine and David love each other, too, in their own way. With Katherine's help, Sarah is going to make sure everyone gets to be happy.
In other news, Jack and David uncover a conspiracy against the railroad unions, Katherine finds a new story in a familiar location, and Sarah finds herself drawn into the work of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
(Or, the fic in which the author has historical notes at the end, and tries her best to explain the complexities of marriages and same-sex relationships in the 1900s - while also letting her characters push the boundaries of said relationships.)
(I feel like I never stop talking about this 'verse, all, but I do love it so. And it's been more than usual lately because I've been working on a new chapter. Thank you to those of you who put up with me and my endless thoughts about this fic! :))

Hello again
I appreciate you taking the time to reply and no disrespect was taken. I always enjoy seeing what a non Blaine Stan thinks, if they can back up their arguments succinctly with valid arguments . Even if we isn’t agree. Yours is a good analysis, different from the usual accusations that he’s toxic, abusive, whiny clingy, and the same scenes over analysed and misconstrued. I’d be very interested in hearing your views on Kurt, perhaps in Pm , as we don’t want to be ripped apart by extreme stans. Who are your favoured characters on Glee?
Hi! And I’m glad to hear! Concision isn’t my strong suit if you couldn’t tell lol so the response is below the cut
I’ve seen some of those arguements and while I get where they’re kind of coming from, I wouldn’t say there’s an inherent toxicity to his character. Like he’s not the best but he tries and he’s one of the few that seems to genuinely recognize his mistakes, own up to them, and apologize.
As for Kurt, it’s a mix of the biphobic comment from s2 and how it never feels like his mistakes or flaws are perceived that way? By himself particularly. I’ve heard that the whole biphobic thing was a reflection of the writers but by putting it in the show it becomes part of his character and then it’s a whole debate of “is this poor/lazy writing or intrinsic to him?” and either way you see it changes how to view the scene and while I’m all for the benefit of the doubt on it, it’s never something readdressed and I just feel... For me I feel like it’s part of his character and while he could’ve changed his opinions later in the series, I don’t really know. Idk it’s a very personal thing more so then “I hate him”
Then for his mistakes the Chandler situation comes to mind and while Blaine may have jumped the gun with calling it cheating and the song (though I appreciate the drama of that whole scene and concept), it doesn’t seem like he ever felt bad about it until Blaine admitted to feeling afraid of being alone once Kurt moves to NY. Like his attitude prior to that confession when they meet with Mrs. P frustrates me because even if it wasn’t cheating or intended to hurt Blaine—it did! and Kurt doesn’t feel remorseful at all (song choice was just... really bad and the episode painting Blaine as the one who should feel the most guilty? particular with the shot of Blaine at the end of the performance?) I just feel like he’s rarely shown to feel guilty for his mistakes and the show rarely has him face consequences for them.
And it sometimes feels like he’s sometimes waiting for things to happen because the universe owes him for the shit he’s gone through. Not to say that he hasn’t gone through some terrible things, because the universe really didn’t treat him kindly on a lot of things. Mostly I just don’t vibe with his character. Like you ever meet someone and you can’t completely figure out what but you’re like “I just do not care for you”? It’s like that. That being said, I understand the value of his character and his arcs in the show—particularly in earlier seasons—and appreciate his character for that and such and I don’t mean for any of this to be hateful because he seems like a good person and I don’t passionately dislike him or anything. He, like most characters on the show, deserved a lot better and had a lot of potential the show kind of didn’t see through.
And I apologize but that’s as much as I can really say on my opinions for him and I hope none of that was too mean? comes across unfounded? For him particularly it’s just a lot of personal things that affect my perception of is character and whether that disagrees with people 🤷🏻‍♀️ but yeah. I don’t like discussing it much as to not step on any toes.
But hmmmm... Would you be surprised to hear Blaine is my favorite character? I guess for me “liking a character” and having a “favorite character” are separate ideas. Sort of. My favorite characters in any media tend to be the ones I can connect to and feel a lot of feelings about. Blaine, thus, is exactly that plus his singing is great and I think Darren does a great job at playing Blaine. And I appreciate his particular level of chaos:
“GAP attack! First day at this new school I’m going to sing in the courtyard! Let’s have a sing off in a parking garage! My bf moved states so I’m going to join 23 clubs and run around in a superhero costume for a superhero I made up but is definitely a play on a certain original sidekick’s second alias! How else to show this dude I love him than to get back together for a day then propose with a big song by all the glee clubs ever at the exact spot we met!” + him hopping on furniture and pianos (oh gosh the stress it gives me everytime they stand/sit on the piano—)
and him being ready to fight people bigger than him (Sam, Karofsky) I know is rooted in his past with bullying but outside of that context it’s a little funny. because I’m sure he can throw a punch but he also looks very small and his willingness to throw a punch when all the McKinley boys start their fights by pushing each other for a while is a little hilarious. Blaine really captures that more absurd side of the show. Y’know the whole high school musical “people don’t actually break out into song like this” except Blaine definitely does.
Other characters I might say are favorites: Marley, Sam, Tina, Santana, Brittany, Elliot, Burt. Do The Warblers as a whole count? And overall my heart just breaks a tiny bit for the potential all the characters had to grow and change over the show but kind of just... didn’t? And Finn as a teacher was good for him and I do wish we had gotten to see that develop more.
Moral of the story is that when it comes to Glee I think way too much about everything and my opinions on it because WOW there are a lot of very strong opinions on it and as a show with a great amount of diversity not necessarily being great writing/representation... There’s just a lot to juggle. Sometimes I’m just like “I like how your voice sounds in this song! You’re in my top 10!” or “If the show developed why you’re doing what you’re doing waaaay more then you’d be a really intriguing character that I feel a lot of emotions about!” Idk it’s like most characters I’ve empathized with at one point or another then also been like “wtf? who does that?” so yeah. Glee overall just has a weird place in my heart. It’s terribly good and also really messed up and I think there are songs they shouldn’t have done and I’m so glad the show isn’t around to do but also some of their covers and performance are brilliant and terrific (cough syrup, smooth criminal, and ND nationals performance in s3 among them).

PRESENTING … FONDUE FOR TWO, HOSTED BY JOEY HUMMEL-ANDERSON.
featuring… this week’s guests, @giannastone & @angel-alexanderr
fondue for two is a weekly internet talk show hosted by joey hummel-anderson. fondue for two, joey, and the muckraker team strive to get all the steaming gossip while he interviews guests of his choice over a steaming pot of cheese.
[JOEY'S ROOM, SAME SET AS BEFORE]
JOEY: Hello everyone and welcome back to Fondue for Two! We're doing a Glee Club edition this month, which means that I will invite the captains of each glee club that actually matter around here... Today we have the captain of the Warblers, also known as my boyfriend, Xan Puckerman! And we have a very good friend of mine, Gigi Stone! She's not captain of the Canaries, but after the so called slushie incident, Aubrey won't talk to me... Either way, are you guys excited to be here?
XAN : Always excited to be in your bedroom, Joseph.
GIGI: Can we keep the flirting to a minimum today, boys? But yeah, I’m excited to be here. You clearly made the best decision by inviting the most talented Canary.
JOEY: Don't worry Gigi, we'll try. Okay, first question is for Xan... Is it true that everyone at Dalton is gay? Or is that a rumor that was created many years ago?
XAN : While I personally believe that everyone is at least a little gay. The number of out and proud homosexuals at Dalton Academy is lower than you might think. So yeah...definitely a rumor. Possibly a little bit of a problematic one while we're at it.(edited)
JOEY: Well... That's interesting to know. But I'm pretty sure that most people will still think that. Gigi, next question is for you! Do you have a date for Candyland? And if you do, who is it?
GIGI: Duh. Of course I do. I’m going with your brother, actually. Trace asked me the other day.
XAN : Love that for you two.
GIGI: He’s so cute, right? I’m excited.
JOEY:  He didn't tell me that! That's cute... Why did you say yes? You know what, that's not important... Since we're talking about Valentine's Day, the next question is for you two: if we weren't all going to Breadstix, what would your perfect Valentine's Day be like? JOEY: Let's stop talking about my brother...
XAN : honestly? i'm not a big holiday person. being born on a holiday kinda ruined all holidays for me i think. but for sake of not looking like an asshole on the internet, i'll say i would be doing something cute with my boyfriend
GIGI: That’s... cute. In a sad sort of way. My perfect Valentine’s Day is being pampered from start to finish. Flowers, jewelry, chocolate. The whole nine yards. GIGI: Trace, if you’re watching this.. Play your cards right and you might be promoted from bench warmer to MVP.
JOEY: 4th of July is a holiday? I thought people just liked to throw fireworks on that day because it's fun, I don't know... But all of those are good answers. Okay, next question, what is the hottest piece of gossip going on at your schools right now? And this is an important one.
XAN : i'm simply not a messy bitch so i have no clue.
JOEY: C'mon, there's gotta be something going on at Dalton!
GIGI: Margot’s dad like literally paid off our coach so she could have a solo at Regionals. Embarrassing, right? Couldn’t be me.
XAN: i will not tolerate Margot slander in my presence. XAN: she's my favorite canary.
JOEY: Wait, did she really do that? Who told you that? I need to know if this is real. Sorry Xanny!
GIGI: It’s literally all anyone can talk about at Crawford? Which is annoying because there’s a lot more interesting things to talk about, but regardless, let’s just say it’s not the first time it’s happened.
JOEY: You heard it here first, people! It won't be a problem though, since you guys lost either way... So sorry about that. But at least the Warblers won! Moving on, who do you guys think will win at Nationals?
XAN : i might be biased. but this is the most competitive warblers year of recent years. i think we could go all the way.
GIGI: Obviously Vocal Adrenaline. No offense to either of you. GIGI: Well, I guess that’ll only happen if they finally kick Giardi off the team.
XAN : i will say...i've heard some rumors about vocal adrenaline's regionals set and i'm a little....terrified for lack of a better word.
GIGI: Say more.
JOEY: Say more right now!
XAN : not to incriminate myself, but i produce rap tracks for this freshman in the warblers. In exchange, he keeps tabs on some of the other show choirs in ohio. let's just say....vocal adrenaline is tributing one of the best vocalists of all time. XAN : expect to cry if you have tickets this weekend.
JOEY: Dua Lipa?
XAN: Not Dua Lipa babes.
GIGI: Interesting. Thanks for the tip, Puckerman.
JOEY: Well, that's kind of scary then... But to answer my own question, I'm sure that the New Directions have a chance too, but we'll see... JOEY: Next question, while we're talking about the show choir world, am I the only one who thinks there's some sexual tension between Julien and Gooby?
XAN : who the hell is gooby?
JOEY: Davis!
XAN: I don't know. That guy gives off heavy asexual vibes to me. Like the definition of soulless automaton. I should know I shared a room with him on the ski trip.
GIGI: (laughs) Davis is the farthest thing from asexual. Soulless? You might be onto something there.
XAN: have you copulated with the enemy???
JOEY: Yeah, have you Gigi? Because that's kind of weird and I can only imagine having sex with Gooby is like sleeping next to a loud breather...
XAN: Or a very unsexy android
JOEY: Or even an emotionless Henry Cavill!
GIGI: Do you two seriously live under a rock? Davis and I have been on and off for the past year and a half or so.
XAN: i don't really pay attention to heterosexual mating patterns...
JOEY: Wait... I thought people from Vocal Adrenaline weren't supposed to sleep with people from other schools... Isn't that why Ivy broke up with Julien?
XAN: i thought Ivy broke up with Julien because he's a cabbage patch kid in a high schooler's body
GIGI: I don’t know why Ivy broke up with Julien, and quite frankly, I don’t care. And to answer your question, they can’t date people from opposing teams during competition season.
JOEY: (chuckles at Xan's comment) Xan, don't be mean! JOEY: Well, yeah, but... Haven't you guys been hooking up for the past year? How does that work?
GIGI: Next question. I didn’t come on here to talk about Davis.
XAN: You heard the lady, stinky.
JOEY: Fine... Who do you think is going to be the most shocking couple at Candyland?
GIGI: Some of these losers actually landing dates is shocking in itself, but I, for one, am interested to see who shows up with the belle of the ball.
XAN: i don’t know about shocking, but I watched Chad texting Bri while we were eating at breastix....and if those two end up back together it would be the LEAST shocking thing in recent history. XAN: actually no...the canaries losing with an all country set would be the least shocking thing in recent history
GIGI: Interesting jab from someone who sang songs from a children’s movie. All I have to say on that front is that the Canaries will never be singing another country song again. You can bet on it.
JOEY: Chad and Bri dated? I had no idea about that... JOEY: But I have to agree with Xan, it was kind of lame... And Trolls isn't a kids' movie! It's a movie for all ages! I love that movie... I'm kind of curious to see who Leo McCarthy is going with, I feel like I haven't seen him in a long time. JOEY: What do you mean about the Canaries though? I thought Aubrey was captain still...
GIGI: And I thought Ivy would never let Julien out of her clutches, but here we are.
XAN: (laughs) not clutches!
JOEY: Okay... Well, that's all the time we have! Before you go, you have to say one nice thing about Gil the Fish... I feel like we haven't been giving him enough attention lately. [points at his fish bowl]
GIGI: I think it’s SO sweet that you bought a fish that looks like Kenna Giardi.
XAN: gil don't listen to her she didn't mean that. you're much sexier than kenna giardi!
JOEY: And that's it! Thank you for being here and for everyone else, don't forget to tune in for Fondue for Two some other time! Bye!
[ THE END ]
