Queer artists 04/30 - Mickalene Thomas
Mickalene Thomas is an African-American queer artist working in paint, collage, printmaking, video and installations. Her work engages with art history and popular culture to explore representations of women in relation to race, gender, sexuality, and notions of beauty.
Her works depict women of colour, often referencing European painting tradition including white female nudes. In the work above, Sleep: Deux Femmes Noire Mickalene uses a mixed medium of photography, collage and woodblock printing to reference Gustave Courbet’s 1866 painting Le Sommeil (pictured below).
