Translation: Sky Sport Exclusive interview with Mick after his Haas exit
Source: Sky Sport F1 Germany
I: “Mick, good to have you here, after a difficult message I believe that you received yesterday. Tell us what especially your feelings are to get here to the paddock after such a decision, probably not easy.”
Mick: “Well of course.. yeah of course I would love to say that I will drive next year, but right now that’s not the case. Difficult, yes, of course it’s not easy, but I’m nevertheless happy looking back at the season. We continuously improved and did the best we could with this situation.”
I: “How was the situation yesterday? It has been speculated about for a while, where you had the feeling, everyone knew except yourself. Is that a wrong impression or was it really something that you only got to realise/know yesterday?”
Mick: “Yesterday was definitely the moment where it became real. I continued to fight hard, to give it my all, tried to give my best always and everywhere, therefore of course, disappointing. But on the other hand I know that I gave it my best and that’s what counts.”
I: “What were the reasons that Günther Steiner stated for why he couldn’t see a future, a future together?”
Mick: “Well they’re ultimately the reasons that he also stated in the interviews he gave. I think the biggest factor is experience. Ehm.. but on my part I also think that when we, or if we would’ve gone into the future together, it would’ve worked well. But in the end it was Gene’s and Günther’s decision and I have to accept that.”
I: “How did you see your development yourself? Because we certainly saw a constant improvement, especially after this difficult start to the second half of the season, where we always emphasised how calm you stayed, how collected, how convinced you were of your own work what then did end in points (what had been required). In Silverstone, in Spielberg - you had a lot of chances where it was prevented by your team, let’s phrase it that way, to drive into the points. So how do you see it yourself, regarding your development?”
Mick: “Yeah, the development is definitely palpable and also visible. Of course we would’ve liked a few more points to our name at the end of the season, but it went the way it did, that’s part of life, and that’s why I approach it like that. In the end I cannot turn back time, because I know that we left a lot of points to grab, especially at the beginning of the season, also on my part, but we continuously fought, gave it our best and that’s what counts for me at the end of this year.”
I: “I just talked to Sebastian Vettel, he said that every driver needs backup and he let on that he did was not really convinced by the leadership and the backup that came from Haas. What is the impression that you can tell us about? Did you have backup from Günther Steiner? From the team?”
Mick: “I had backup from Sebastian. I’m pretty happy about that. We always had a quite open communication between the team and I. We continuously worked on ourselves, we tried to improve everything that was there to improve. And I think if we look at the beginning of the season vs now that we kept this graph going continuously. The race pace was really good and the qualifying pace also improved towards the end, but yeah, was obviously not enough.”
I: “What do you take with you after these 2 years with Haas – on a sporting and personal level?”
Mick: “Well of course I would like to thank everyone for those two years. It was amazing to be able to start here. Formula 1 is a dream that came true but also a dream that didn’t end, yet. It’s definitely my goal to be on the grid again in 2024. I’ll work hard on myself and will see that I will have all the chess pieces in the right position to hopefully be successful.”
I: “I think it’s impressive what class you’re showing in this situation you’re in at the moment, to thank the team, set a new focus, to – and I am certain about that – gather strength to get to the right and I’m sure better conclusions. Mick, your thoughts on your future now. What do they look like? Can you take us along what your current thoughts are about?”
Mick: “Yeah I think a saying that fits quite well is that you have to.. ehh burn? to get out prettier than before? (I think he means “like a phoenix rising from the ashes” 😂) I think there’s a saying for that! But yeah, I think there are several options and one thing I do have now is time. So I will take the time to look at the options that I have and see that I take the right decision to have the best chance to.. yeah be successful in the end.”
I: “But you definitely want to stay in Formula 1? That is certain?”
Mick: “Formula 1 is the only thing I’m interested in.”
I: “Formula 1, nothing else. That’s good, we’ll take it. What do you need personally? What kind of environment, which atmosphere do you need to be able to show your best self?”
Mick: “That’s what I have to look at. Of course, it’s hard to judge it from the outside, but ultimately I want to be in a place where I can grow, where I can show the performance I have in me and just see that we can go into the tight direction.”
I: “If we take a look at this weekend, which will be the last with Haas here in Abu Dhabi – how will you approach it?”
Mick: “Sorry?”
I: “How will you approach this last weekend with Haas here in Abu Dhabi?”
Mick: “First and foremost with fun. It’s another year that has past – last year we’ve also been here in Abu Dhabi which has been a bit different with covid and all, but this year is a bit more open, more people around probably, so the atmosphere will probably be different. The car should be quite okay, I think we’re just on the brink on tenth place. That means if we managed to get it all right again, after the second free practice, (then we can) hopefully have it all in order to have a good qualifying.”
I: “How will you say goodbye to your team, to your garage?”
Mick: “Ehh, I have to see what special (thing) I can do for the boys, they’ve naturally been amazing this whole year! We had a lot of fun together so therefore I would want to thank them in the right way.”
I: “And Mick, what has also been remarkable was that your post that – as well as you present yourself here – has shown a great deal of class/greatness, had SO many comments, also from colleagues. I don’t know everyone that has commented there, but Esteban Ocon, of course, your great buddy, but many others more, Angela Cullen, Lewis Hamilton’s physiotherapist. Have you been surprised or happy about it yourself to get this reaction?”
Mick: “Yes, of course it’s nice to see that there is support everywhere. I mean I said it several times – I love this sport. How many have said: “We come back stronger!” and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
I: “How will the relationship develop with your team principle, with Günther Steiner?”
Mick: “Well I mean with Günther – we actually have an okay-ish relationship and I think that will stay that way.”
I: “Mick we’ll say thank you then. Good luck to what’s ahead of you. I have said it before I am certain that the energy that you’re getting here that’s being released will end in something great. We’re certain of it. We definitely wish you all the best.”
Mick: “Thank you.”

Do you have any headcanons for little Mick and caregiver Seb perhaps?
Ive never written this paring before, but I love them both so much, Im def going to write more of them in the future
Little Mick + Caregiver Seb !
Bike hangouts are a common activity, sometimes its short, sometimes its long, but they always go together
Seb definitely caries basic necessities with him at all times (things such as pacifier, bandaids, disinfectant)
Mick is shier than most littles, both when it comes to talking about is feelings and asking for things, so sebastian alwasy offers stuff or ask (also encourages mick to ask for whaetver he may need and talk about his feelings)
Mick has bought every sigle item in sebastians merch shop, multiple times. Its mostly what he wears when hes little- his favorite is the "save the bees" shirt
Because sebastians noticed thats his favortie shirt, he got a custom plushie matching the shirt which mick refuses to let go of

Out of all places, it happens in Sebastian’s office.
It’s the same office where he signed his first Ferrari contract with Britta on his side, the same room where he was told they wouldn’t renew his contract six years later. Something bittersweet yet triumphant welled in his chest when he first sat down at the other side of the desk. It hasn’t been a year yet since he’s claimed it as his own, but it feels like home all the same.
It’s the last days of the summer break. Charles has left already but Mick has wandered back to Sebastian’s office after finishing with his engineers. He’s flushed and golden from the Italian heat, goes to help himself to a glass of water from the carafe that’s slowly sweating on a tray. Somewhere between an email and a blueprint the sun’s started to set; the strands falling into Mick’s face are glowing.
Instead of flopping down in one of the plush armchairs for guests, Mick walks over to stand behind Sebastian, his warm palms coming to rest on his shoulders for a second.
“Good day?”
“Productive,” Sebastian shrugs. It’s basically the same thing. Mick chuckles and perches on the edge of the desk, straightening out his legs. It’s nice to speak German to Mick; Sebastian’s Italian is… well, enthusiastic, and while his English is almost second nature, there’s nothing like falling back into your most familiar with someone you care for. They only speak it when it’s the two of them; if Charles is there, Sebastian is painstakingly careful not to let his tongue slip into German. He’d never want Charles to feel left out.
“You work too much,” Mick says. It’s an old argument, but Sebastian can’t mind it too much, not when it gets them a few precious minutes of uninterrupted conversation.
“On the contrary, I work just enough,” he fires back. Mick laughs, his entire body lighting up with it.
“I see how it is,” Mick chuckles, “you’re taking all the credit for the standings, huh?”
“Someone has to if you won’t,” Sebastian points out with a grin. It’s a really good year; better than he anticipated. Even better for Mick, especially for his first year in red. “Seriously, Mick, if you keep it up–”
“Okay, let’s not talk about racing anymore,” Mick interrupts him, a flush spreading down his neck. He’s said it already: he doesn’t want to jinx anything by talking about it too much. But his smile is small, pleased; seemingly to shake himself out of it, he crosses his arms over his chest. “It’s almost eight, Seb, what are you still doing here?”
Sebastian gets up and stretches out his back, careful to not whack Mick with any stray elbows.
“I got caught up in my inbox again,” he admits. It’s not the first time that someone had to come up to remind him of the time. But Mick’s only twelve points behind Tsunoda and with the upgrades Ferrari will be rolling out… It’s important that he’s here to oversee it. There’s just always something else to take care of.
“I’m pretty sure it can wait ‘til tomorrow,” Mick tells him. When Sebastian rolls his eyes, Mick chuckles and slides off the desk. He’s closer than Sebastian thought he would be and he wraps a strong arm around Sebastian’s shoulders, reeling him in. Sebastian goes; Mick’s body is a solid, familiar line along his own. Sebastian closes his eyes and lets himself bask in the warmth radiating from him.
Then Mick ducks his head and presses his lips against Sebastian’s, warm and sweet. Sebastian’s entire body goes hot, then cold in under a millisecond. He stumbles backwards.
“Mick– what–” he stammers out. Now that he’s got the desk between them, he stares at Mick, who’s looking back at him calmly, if a little amused. His heart is rabbiting in his chest.
“Yes,” Mick asks, well; says, rather.
“I– We can’t,” Sebastian says. He runs his hands through his hair, fists them into the strands to anchor himself with the prickling points of pain.
“Why not?” Mick is still just looking at him with those blue eyes. Sebastian feels liplocked. Mick slowly circles around the desk and Sebastian wishes he wanted to back away. Was he a better man, he would. He stands rooted to the floor while Mick walks up to him with confident strides, cups Sebastian’s cheek with a large, warm palm. Sebastian’s own hands hang by his sides, useless.
“Don’t,” he tells Mick, unable to keep the plea out of his tone. Mick just brushes his cheek with his thumb.
“Tell me you don’t want this, then,” Mick says and doesn’t stop touching him.
Sebastian is not a good actor. He hates lying, the whole principle of it.
“Is that what you need to hear?” he asks instead. The smile that appears on Mick’s face is like an afterthought.
“Tell me you don’t want me and I will never bring it up again,” he promises Sebastian.
“You’re– you’re so young,” Sebastian says instead, stumbling over his words.
“When you were my age,” Mick answers, “you’ve already won four championships.”
“Ah,” Sebastian says, clutching at the straw. So this is about racing then, the championship, the points. He’s listing words in his head like they’ll save them. “And you’re well on your way to your first, Mick, you–”
“Don’t change the topic, Seb,” Mick cuts him off, his tone starting to ignite. “This is not about the standings. Just tell me, yes or no…” He trails off.
“I’m basically your superior, Mick,” Sebastian says instead, helpless. “Such an abuse of power, it’s. Not normal. I could threaten to drop you or team order you if you don’t do what I tell you to.”
“Don’t I already?” Mick asks. No, Sebastian wants to tell him. You’re always one step ahead of me. Like now.
“Wouldn’t you question yourself? Your success?” Sebastian barrels on. “ Wouldn’t you think that Charles is told to give you a tow because–? That you’re getting special treatment because, because of– because of us?” The last word, he can barely say.
Mick is studying him with large, serious eyes. He tucks a stray curl back behind Sebastian’s ear.
“You know, Seb,” he starts, “I only kissed you. I didn’t say anything. You’re the one who assumed I wanted something serious,” Mick says lightly. Sebastian feels his words like a slap, absorbs the pain, buries it deep inside his chest. Remember this, he thinks, remember this when you next dream of him. His lips are trembling. He’s aware of it but unable to stop it; if he bites down, he’s scared he’d only draw more attention to it.
Mick notices anyway. His thumb slides down and brushes over Sebastian’s mouth, just the lightest of touches. Then he leans in and runs the tip of his nose against the curve of Sebastian’s upper lip, gentle still. And then he’s pressing closer, slotting his mouth softly against Sebastian’s. Now it’s him who pulls back after a brief second, the time a half-breath would take.
“You assumed,” he murmurs, his breath hot on Sebastian’s lips, “because anything less is unthinkable. Not just to me, but to you too.”
Sebastian makes an involuntary sound, his body betraying him. His lips must be trembling even worse now. He feels found out, humiliated by his own greed.
“Why won’t you allow us this?” Mick asks with barely a whisper, and oh, his lips are chaste and full of life. Sebastian shakes under his hands.
He needs to put a stop to this. He’s already let it go too far.
Sebastian lifts his head and steps back; watches Mick’s hands fall into nothing. “Don’t ask this of me again,” he says, his voice too rough in the late night serenity.
He doesn’t waver by the door.
for @antimonyandthyme : surprise- or not!

F1 Professor AU
Lewis Hamilton is the professor of music? Literature? Business? Fashion? At some very nice university and Charles Leclerc is his protege.
Toto is the dean/board of directors/very generous donor, and Valtteri is a visiting professor from Finland.
Nico (professor of languages/communication) and Lewis used to work together on their phDs and became professors at the same time but then he went away and no one knows why and Lewis suddenly changes into this cool mentor person (tragic brocedes backstory)
Seb's there as a cheeky professor who got tenure early and is up to wacky shenanigans and is always having a fun time. George is majoring in engineering and so seb is his research mentor? Idk
So. As per the core curriculum of the university, George has to take an art/lit class and seb recs lewis (obviously) so George is very much fascinated by him and what he does and obviously Lewis is a sexy sexy man who every student is into.
Charles on the other hand is a big flirt (plus he's Lewis' star student, gotta be expected) and just for fun (or a little revenge?) Lewis sends him to Seb's class.
So basically we have George and Charles obsessing over the new profs and Lewis and Seb checking papers over wine and soft classical music (or at a nightclub, does it matter where they get their work done?) and talking about how well their students are doing and just having a swell time completely unaware of the competition their mentees have.
Lando is a freshman with a passion for art and Carlos is a first year at grad school doing oenology to take over the family business. Pierre is Lewis's TA interning at Red Bull and has a fling with Charles but they're chill. They're very good friends.
Esteban, the culinary TA to Romain Grosjean is very much into Pierre but it manifests itself in a competitive way and this is a major subplot (will they or won't they?)
Daniel is a business major who always has crazy ideas (backed by seb obviously) and he and jev (who dropped out but runs a decently succesful bar/mixology institute) have had run interesting businesses that unfortunately fail :(
Mick is the legacy student determined to carve out a name for himself, while still upholding his dad's reputation. I'm making him study theater/film/cinematography. Lance is the resident socially progressive frat boy (yeah he's a himbo here)
