I am thinking a lot about ancestry stuff again. The other day on Facebook I joined a Humboldt County History group, kind of expecting that it would end up being really whitewashed and I’d leave a few days later, but I saw there were actually a significant number of posts about the Native history too: the Yurok, Wiyot, Karuk, all of that. I saw some names there too of people that I’ve contacted in the last couple years about researching my own family, so I posted some old family photos in my introduction and they were well received. One person who reacted is a woman that I contacted a few years ago when I was still suspecting my family had ties to Tsurai, which I later put more pieces together and suspect that isn’t accurate anymore... anyway, I sent her a friend request and we’ve been talking a bit.
Tonight in our conversation she said ‘And you’re from Gold Bluff, right?” which I’ve learned is the way of really determining where someone is when you’re Native. The literal place where I was born is one way I could answer, or the town that I consider my hometown where I spent most of my childhood, or I could say the town of my adolescence-young adulthood, or the entire state in which I was born or where I currently live, and all of those things are true. Here what she is asking me is my ties with the Yurok. I responded with “That’s what we were told.”
I found another source on that actually! There is a History of Humboldt County book on ancestry.com and I found one of my great great uncles in it, listing his mother as a native of Gold Bluff. A lot of the extended family on the rolls have “Gold Bluff” listed as their specific tribe. I don’t know what the exact village name would have been (I still think it was Or-req’ if I go by that geography book I found ages ago) but her asking “You’re from Gold Bluff, right?” to remind herself of the conversation we had a year or two ago. yes, that’s where my roots are.
It reminds me so much of this storytelling event I went to at the local cultural center. They had a Lakota elder and his companion do drumming, songs, and talk about his time at residential school as a boy. It was a very powerful experience. I remember clearly at one point he was saying “[Town] is where I live, but this is not my home”. Home referring to Lakota territory in this case. That’s where his roots are.
And this past summer I did a Zoom meeting with Joshua Morin and some other  Métis people and he talked about how in Michif there are distinct differences in saying where you’re from versus where you live or where you were born. On this side, I’m from Red River and Choteau as far as historic Métis communities go. In Red River specifically: St. Vital, St. Boniface. Manitoba. I have roots there.
I remember years ago being really afraid actually of trying to connect with people as kin because I know all too well how much blood myth there is to white American history, and in doing genealogy research I’ve run into a few other blood myths in my tree as well. Here, this is known. These are as real in tree as Berwickshire is, as Alsace-Lorraine is, all of that. I feel like her asking me tonight, reminding herself where my roots are, is that acceptance that I was worried I wouldn’t obtain at the beginning. Finding documentation before the Gold Rush is probably completely impossible, but we know where the roots are still.
I think a lot of these feelings are coming out because of how on fire the whole state of California is. The smoke has reached Washington. My home, the home of much of my family, is burning.
