The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-January 28, 2023
By David G. Firestone Brad Keselowski #6 Castrol Ford Mustang-A good color scheme, and a great design scheme will always earn an A. Corey LaJoie #7 Celsius Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as last year, same A grade. Kyle Busch #8 Netspend Chevy Camaro-The only good thing I can say is that I like the shade of red. Beauty & the Bieber (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Continuing their signature style of combining childhood classics with modern music, the PattyCake guys decided to tackle a tale as old as time for their next project. In addition to Justin Bieber's melodies and the musical motifs from the 1991 animated film, they also included elements from the forthcoming 2017 live action remake.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — Beauty and the Bieber
performers: Jamie Fritz (Belle); Earl Elkins, Jr. (Beast); E. Michael Evans (Gaston); Joey D'Angelo-LaJoie (LaFou); Alexander Browne (Lumiere); Brad Pettitt (Prince Adam); Leah Lowman (village girls); Anita Wakim (Enchantress)
original songs / performers: [0:15] "I'll Show You" by Justin Bieber; [0:53] "Baby" by Justin Bieber, feat. Ludacris; [1:09] "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber; [1:21] "Never Say Never" by Justin Bieber, feat. Jaden; [2:12] "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber; [2:36] "Company" by Justin Bieber; [3:30] "Beauty and a Beat" by Justin Bieber, feat. Nicki Minaj; [4:10] "Sorry" by Justin Bieber; [4:22] "Let Me Love You" by DJ Snake, feat. Justin Bieber; [4:44] "Cold Water" by Major Lazer, feat. Justin Bieber & MØ
written by: "I'll Show You" by Justin Bieber, Michael "BloodPop" Tucker, Sonny "Skrillex" Moore, Theron "Neff-U" Feemster, & Joshua Gudwin; "Baby" by Justin Bieber, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Terius "The-Dream" Nash, Christopher "Ludacris" Bridges, & Christina Milian; "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, & Ed Sheeran; "Never Say Never" by Adam "Messy" Messinger, Nasri Atweh, Thaddis "Kuk" Harrell, Jaden Smith, Omarr Rambert, & Justin Bieber; "Boyfriend" by Mike Posner, Mason Levy, Matthew "Blackbear" Musto, & Justin Bieber; "Company" by Justin Bieber, Andreas Schuller, James Wong, Leroy Clampitt, Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd, James "JHart" Abrahart, & Thomas Troelsen; "Beauty and a Beat" by Max Martin, Anton "Zedd" Zaslavski, Savan Kotecha, & Nicki Minaj; "Sorry" by Justin Bieber, Michael "BloodPop" Tucker, Sonny "Skrillex" Moore, Justin Tranter, & Julia Michaels; "Let Me Love You" by William "DJ Snake" Grigahcine, Justin Bieber, Andrew "Watt" Wotman, Ali Tamposi, Brian Lee, & Louis Bell; "Cold Water" by Thomas "Diplo" Pentz, Justin Bieber, Karen Marie "MØ" Ørsted, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, "King Henry" Allen, Philip "Jr Blender" Meckseper, Ed Sheeran, & Jamie Scott
arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 17 March 2017
My favorite bits:
combining the rhythmic strings and the villagers' greetings from "Belle" with the melody for "I'll Show You"
Belle explicitly giving Gaston the brush-off
the tinkling minor motif from the animated movie as Belle enters the castle
Earl's fantastic growl at the end of "Never Say Never"
LaFou's gleeful fawning over Gaston and dancing on the tables
the sneaky ♫ "May-be" ♫ from "Company" overlapping with the tavern scene and leading into the "Be Our Guest" instrumentation
the Beast's lovely vulnerability during the dinner and dancing
using the crunchy horn motif from "Battle on the Tower" to create menace in this version of "Let Me Love You"
Earl's voice being layered over the final lyrics after the transformation

Trivia:
○ The obvious starting point for this project was Jusin Beiber's "Beauty and a Beat", which Tony and Layne had performed as part of VoicePlay's "Wow! Vol. 1" medley during the 2015 Sing-Off tour, but one song does not a full plot make. The guys delved into his extended catalogue to find songs that fit certain story beats and would blend well with the animated movie's score.
○ This was an incredibly ambtious undertaking. According to the PattyCake guys, preparations took five months, and filming spanned "six long days" (and nights, clearly).
○ All that hard work paid off, though, since they were able to time their YouTube release for the same day that the Emma Watson movie hit theaters.
○ VoicePlay recorded a Beauty and the Beast medley for "Once Upon an Ever After" (2012), their first album with Tony as a member of the group. Excerpts from that arrangement later appeared in their music videos "Be Our Guest", "Aca Top 10 – Disney Sidekicks", and "Aca Top 10 – Disney Villains". They also included "Belle" in their "Aca Top 10 – Broadway" countdown.
○ "Love Yourself" was the first song in VoicePlay's PartWork series, which they started as preparation for Tony leaving the group.
○ Layne occasionally used "Baby" as his interruption at the end of VoicePlay's "Road Trip" medley / comedy sketch.
○ On top of their usual studio work, this production required multiple location shoots:
The outdoor village scenes were filmed at the Casa Feliz museum.
Beast's castle interior was the Ballroom at Church Street, which closed in 2019, and was demolished 2023.
The tavern was an actual bar, the Tap Room at Dubsdread.
○ Between the main cast and dozens of background folks, they needed so many costumes that Tony enlisted his sister Anita to help wrangle them all.
○ There are several of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni among the main cast:
Michael (Gaston) played Dracula and Frankenstein's monster.
Joey (LaFou) played Wolfman and Dracula.
Brad (Prince Adam) was a dancer in the final "Mashup" iteration of the show.
○ There are also many friends and family among background cast and crew, including several cast members from previous Unexpected Musicals. Olivia Adkins and Leah Lowman are among the village crowd as Snow White and Cinderella. Rachel Copeland and Matthew Buckner are in the tavern crowd, but not as their previous characters. Many of the other villagers were clubgoers in "Hocus Heathens".
○ This video got a nice write-up on Huffington Post.

Welcome back from Skate Canada! What a great comp to get to watch live! Would you mind sharing your personal highlights?
not at all! i was thinking of making a thread on twitter but actually it's better to just put all my thoughts in one post here haha. i'll do my best to record some thoughts before i forget.
women:
it was wonderful to see rika, i really hope her injury is getting better and she takes it easy until nationals. her skating is very lovely and polished. i was feeling kind of stressed about her jumps before the competition but she was great in the free! the titanic program is good for her. i'm happy she got the highest PCS of the free skate.
rinka was really solid in general, i'm thrilled for her amazing gp debut. to think she started out with no gp assignments at all! her spins could use some work and i would have liked to see more speed in her step sequences but i think she'll get there. i love her tight air position on the 3A.
really happy for starr, i haven't seen her skate that well in a long time and i'm happy she medaled. would also like to see more speed and ice coverage from her.
young kind of got hosed by the judges, personally i would have given her silver here. i love her short program, the detail in her step sequence is fantastic. i don't like her fs as much, it doesn't stand out to me but maybe it will grow on me.
(horrifically embarrassing moment when the announcer announced young as "from japan" in the medal ceremony. the gasps of "NO" from the audience... yikes! anyway the girls were all really popular and went around after the medal ceremony signing autographs and taking photos with fans, eventually the announcer had to ask them to leave the ice so the zamboni could come out lol.)
i felt really bad for maddie schizas and the flower holder situation. that was stressful. i saw some flowers falling apart once they hit the ice as well. brings me back to 2017 skate america and the dead flies on the ice, but at least those weren’t going to trip anybody.
in general, the women's event was very "what just happened here" - we don't usually see this much movement in standings between the sp and fs in this discipline! otoh it's kind of cool to not be able to predict the results. few other performances i enjoyed include: ava ziegler (she's quite expressive), niina petrokina (interesting programs), yuhana yokoi's fs (her 2As are super airy...but oh, why must she always bomb the sp), lindsay thorngren's spins.
ice dance:
i like ice dance but am useless at figuring out scoring, so basically just going by vibes here.
lajoie/lagha were the revelation of the competition for me, i became a fan after watching them live. i was zoning out a bit during the rhythm dance (most of the RDs this season are just...not very interesting to me) until lala - they have amazing energy and a really fun program! they skate big and fast and just fill up the rink.
green/parsons are great skaters (especially michael) but i am not feeling their programs this season at all, which is a bit of a shame because i loved them last season. but since they just changed coaches, i’m sure it will take a while to adjust to the new training environment; hoping for the best for them. they had a hilarious exhibition, do check it out if you haven’t.
fear/gibson - lewis always looks like he’s having a great time out there and i enjoy that.
gilles/poirier - i think i like their free dance? although it does have a lot of music cuts. paul’s skating skills are A+.
pairs:
i love miura/kihara SO MUCH. they skate with so much passion and joy and just look like they’re having the time of their lives out there. the quality of their skating compared to the rest of the field was really, really obvious. they were by far the fastest team with the best skating skills and most stable pairs elements. big throws, fast and effortless lifts that covered a lot of ice. i’m still astounded that they’ve improved this much in only a few years. i’m really happy they won here, especially considering riku’s injury and the fact that they’ve only been doing runthroughs of their free for a few weeks (!!!) manifesting a world title for them this season, please gods give me this.
also enjoyed: chan/howe, sitting in the twist corner so we could see all the twists up close
men:
the men’s sp aged me about 50 years. so...many...pops...and falls...six skaters scored below 70. i think we were all a bit catatonic by the end of day 1. luckily the men (mostly) redeemed themselves in the free, and it was a good event to end on.
the energy in the arena exploded after keegan’s skate, and i can see why. he’s just fun to watch! he’s extremely fast, skates super close to the boards, and doesn’t do anything halfway. even his mistakes are dramatic - i thought he was going to go flying over the boards after saving a 3A - but for his last season, he had a great free skate to end his last skate canada.
i was worried about matteo, but he delivered one of the cleanest skates of the night! i can’t believe he landed the 4Lo, because he was popping all of them in practice. really happy for his medal. he’s so charming and i became a bigger fan after seeing him. the audience gave him lots of love after his free, which was good because it was very dead during the sp.
poor kao broke his lace during the free skate warmup, came back out with 20 seconds to go and landed a 4T right before the warmup ended. this kid. he was rock solid in all the practices and had the only clean skate in the sp, so honestly thanks for that. i love his speed and power, he goes into his jumps with no hesitation at all. just jaw-dropping quality jumps. he’s rough around the edges but has lots of potential. i’ll even forgive him for the beauty and the beast music because he’s only 17 and it’s cheesy in a good way. also proud of him for not getting level 2 spins this time.
also enjoyed: shoma’s free (shows his good qualities well), camden (he’s just nice to watch, jumps be damned), deniss’s exhibition (one of the few interesting exhibitions in the whole gala)
general thoughts:
audience tended to be pretty canadian-centric when it came to cheering, but shoma, miura/kihara, and rika got the loudest cheers after the canadian skaters.
the food is some of the worst i’ve had in an arena, and my standards are not high to begin with! all the water fountains were out of order as well. the only good thing was that security never checked anyone’s bags, so we ended up smuggling in food and ordering out.
not sure if this could be heard on the livestream but there was an extremely loud, squeaky noise whenever the rink’s A/C turned on. it was unbearably annoying but also unintentionally hilarious at times - like when a skater was doing a spin or step sequence and the A/C would make their skates sound like a speeding car skidding on a road.
overall it was a fun weekend! but also exhausting haha. i haven’t been to a skating competition in several years so it was great just to see live skating again. my favorite thing about live skating is the sense of speed and ice coverage that is completely different from watching on a screen - and of course, the audience reaction to a good performance. there’s really no replacing that feeling.

Lake Placid ID Int'l Seniors 2022:
Tumblr media
Lorraine McNamara/Anton Spirodinov 🥇 (WISA): RD George Michael Careless Whisper; Ile Axe, Batucada
FD Rain in Your Black Eyes
Tumblr media
Felt like they were inspired by Green Parsons FD from last year to do something in that vein, but less modern dance. I saw her compete in Lake Placid 2019 with her former partner and liked that she had a quirky vibe that didn't feel like anyone else. Last year felt like major growing pains for a new partnership, so it was good to see them do well here. He had a twizzle error in the FD, and I think there was one in the RD as well. They put a Latin beat underneath Careless Whisper in the RD but it still felt a bit disjointed with the other piece
Tumblr media
Eva Pate/Logan Bye 🥈 (Novi) : RD: Barbatuques, Beautiful; Jamie Foxx, Fly Love; Real in Rio
FD Riverdance, Reel Around the Sun
Igor so often gives his teams music which was used kind of indelibly by another team- the last number of this RD is Lajoie/Lagha's bird FD from last year
The FD is a crowdpleaser, a good vehicle for them - they don't yet have the independence between their feet and that quiet upper body that Irish step dancing has but looking forward to seeing how this evolves in style and precision as the season goes on
Tumblr media
Katarina Wolfkostin/Jeffrey Chen 🥉(MIDA): RD: Watazu, Samba Lagoa; Juls, Summer in the Ends
FD Florence + the Machine, Light of Love, Dog Days are Over
They won the RD, but judge #4 from Australia had it out for them- Judge #1 gave them 8.25 for Composition, but Judge #4 gave them 6.25. She scored them a good point lower than any other judge in every category. How does this work, does Charlie or one of the people there from USFS go raise a stink? Because Judge #4's scores were more in line with the rest of the panel for the FD. Side note that Charlie seems so happy- he was laughing at the boards a lot and was upbeat every time I saw him
Tumblr media
Emily Bratti/Ian Somerville (MIDA): RD: Club Des Belugas, Gadda Rio; Millaway, Butterfly; Club Des Belugas, Hiphip Chinchin
FD LaLa Land: Another Day of Sun, A Lovely Night, Someone in the Crowd
Tumblr media
This FD music felt like a smart choice, light and bright and a good fit for them. parking was a nightmare the first day, and he gave me his parking spot and was nice about it lol he looked familiar but didn't recognize him until the RD (hiphip chin chin!)
Tumblr media
Haley Sales/Nikolas Wamsteeker (IAM.O): RD: Pink Martini, Quizas, Quizas, Quizas; Pink Martini, Ohayoo Ohio
FD Phantom of the Opera, Josh Groban/Kelly Clarkson All I Ask of You, and soundtrack
Tumblr media
I know Phantom's a warhorse, but it's so good to see them skating to something big that builds and has impact. Felt like this will help them in their fight to move up in Canada. They don't lack intensity, but sometimes their music choices feel too low key. Like their RD music felt puzzlingly flat, and like Billie Eilish last year, was harder to pull off because it doesn't give them enough energy - it's kind of sultry and sophisticated in the sound, but it didn't pop in the rink, which is a shame, because the RD has some striking elements, like the lift. maybe it will grow through the season, but bigger music helps them
Tumblr media
Mariia Nosovitskaya/Michael Nosovitsky: FD Edith Piaf: La Vie en Rose, Padam Padam, Milord
Tumblr media
Lily Hensen/Nathan Lickers (IAM.O): RD: Afro Cuban All Stars, Amor Verdadero; Bueno Vista Social Club, Chan Chan; El Rubio Loco, Salsaton
FD Hozier, Work Song and Movement
The song the fandom speculated VM would skate to in RTR, here it is😭
Tumblr media
Elysia-Marie Campbell/Liam Fawcett: RD: Karol G, Punto G; Chanel, SloMo (Eurovision Dancebreak Edit)
FD Sleeping Beauty
love a classical program - there weren't that many in the competitions
Tumblr media
Samantha Ritter/Daniel Brykalov (IAM.O): RD: Santana, Black Magic Woman; Santana, El Farol; Santana feat. Mana, Corazon Espinado
FD Harry Styles, She
Tumblr media
They're both tall and long limbed - was wondering if Madi Hubbell might be very helpful to them since she and Zach are a tall team as well
Tumblr media
Jenna Hertenstein/Damian Binkowski (WISA): RD: Shakira, Chantaje; DJ Luc14no Antileo, Reggaeton Old School; Lecenzo, Danza Kuduro
FD Artem Uzunov, Unio Mystica; Brandon Fiechter, Sands of Arabia; Yasal Akpence, Last Harem

What were Caroline and Michael like before the Olympic season? I know that was a huge breakout for them but it seems like everyone is saying something has been off since moving to MIDA. Do you think something is off or is it just that the breakout season was an anomaly? Also I rewatched that program and Caroline should always have a costume with a turtleneck that look was stunning on her (reminded me of Tessa)
They had a (to me) pretentious modern dance program in leotards and everyone and their mother thought they were groundbreaking artists when really it was slow, boring, and every single lift had Caroline Green in the literal fetal position, because she was lacking core and leg extension.
The gossip is that Caroline wanted to go to IAM, and Michael wanted MIDA, they've ended up at MIDA, and haven't had an interesting program since. Green and Parsons were also outscoring Lajoie and Lagha, and now the Canadians are well past Green and Parsons.
In the 2021/2022 season, Gr/P got bronze at Autumn Classic while L/L for 4th; Skate Canada Gr/P got 4th, L/L were 6th
Lajoie and Lagha were able to go to the Olympics and Worlds in 2022, and Green and Parsons did not, they were US #4 behind C/B, H/D and H/B, while L/L were Canada #3. However, Green and Parsons got 4CC gold that year, because none of the top teams went to that competition.
After the Olympic season, they switched coaches, and a tide turned.
Marjorie and Zak came out so strong that year, they won both their senior Bs, with a wide margin from gold to silver too. Then L/L got bronze over Gr/P at Skate Canada, by a little over a point. L/L weren't at Worlds, but they went to 4CC and got bronze, while Gr/P ended up 5th.
This season as well, the tide turned more: Marjo and Zak made it the grand prix final this year, Caroline and Michael did not. Lala got silver the CoC and Gr/P got bronze, and they were 15 points behind the Canadians.
This was a big break down of scoring/placement between these two teams, but it's just to demonstrate they Green and Parsons seemed to be on the rise -- and they still are -- but they've been overtaken by a team they used to beat. They are now also being over taken by Carreira and Ponomarenko, another team they used to place above.
I understand them not being happy. I think the fact they are they currently sitting 3 points behind Cpom after the RD is infuriating to them, they looked dejected and mad in the k/c when their scores came up.
I think they are an okay team, but personally I just don't they think have It. The elusive thing that makes you want to watch more. Also, like I said above, MIDA has given all their teams absolute duds when it comes to programs, there hasn't been a good one since they opened their school.

Uno Refreshes Season Best In Figure Skating Short Program At Cup Of China
Tumblr media
Figure Skating Series Cup: Reigning world champion Shoma Uno set a new season best score for the men's short program as the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series Cup of China got underway here.Skating to "Love You Kung Fu" and "Clair de Lune", the Japanese talent, who turns 26 years old next month, hit his trademark quad flip, a quad toe-triple toe combination, and a triple Axel, which was credited for "highlight distribution", to score 105.25 points. He also earned a level four for his spins and a level three for the footwork, reports Xinhua. The previous men's short program best score of the 2023-2024 season was held by US teenage sensation Ilia Malinin, who scored 104.06 points on October 20 at the season-opening Skate America. "I did a good job with the jumps today and the whole package," Uno commented at a post-competition press conference. "At this competition, I don't think about the result or the points, I just want to show my program," he added. European champion Adam Siao Him Fa came second to Uno's strong lead, trailing by 14 points. Kazakhstan's Mikhail Shaidorov stood third further 1.27 points back. Local favorite Jin Boyang, a two-time world bronze medalist, placed fourth with a personal season best of 87.44, beating Italian Gabriele Frangipani and Japanese Kazuki Tomono to the fifth and sixth respectively. Skate Canada champion Sota Yamamoto of Japan only ranked in eighth with errors on his jumps. The ISU senior's GP newcomers, Xu Juwen and Dai Dawei of China, sat on 10th and 11th with scores of 65.57 and 64.25 respectively. World bronze medalist Loena Hendrickx of Belgium led the women's short program with 70.65 points, despite an unsuccessful Axel. Japan's Rinka Watanabe and Hana Yoshida followed in second and third. Niina Petrokina of Estonia was close to the podium in fourth place at 62.58 points, while China's Chen Hongyi and An Xiangyi, another Chinese debutant to the senior figure skating, came fifth and sixth on 62.57 and 61.86 points. Skate Canada champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of Canada and European silver medalists Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini of Italy finished 1-2 in the pairs short program on 70.39 and 66.33, and China's three-time Olympian Peng Cheng and her new partner Wang Lei rounded out the podium with a score of 62.91. Skate America champions Annika Hocke/Robert Kunkel of Germany came fourth, while the other two Chinese pairs, Zhang Siyang/Yang Yongchao and Wang Yuchen Zhu Lei finished fifth and seventh on 58.71 and 49.95 respectively. In the ice dance event, Skate America silver medalists Majorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha from Canada led the rankings temporarily after rhythm dance, claiming 82.02 points to edge two-time world bronze medalists and compatriots Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier to second place by just 0.98 points. American pair Caroline Green/Michael Parsons, the 2022 Four Continents champions, came out a distant third with 76.07 points. China's youngsters, Chen Xizi/Xing Jailing and Shi Shang/Wu Nan, finished the rhythm dance as the bottom two among nine pairs, after the Olympian pair Wang Shiyue and Liu Xinyu withdrew from the event due to Liu's injury. The Cup of China, the fourth of six events of the ISU Grand Prix Series in which the world's best figure skaters collect points towards the 2023-2024 GP Final in Beijing on December 7-10, continues here on Saturday with the free dance and free programs of men's, women's and pairs figure skates. NASCAR - Bristol
NASCAR.com
BRISTOL, Tenn. — Denny Hamlin landed a knockout punch in the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Some random observations from a NASCAR noob.
Denny Hamlin looks strong at the right time. He always seems to be fast and has a crazy high racing IQ.
Kyle Larson also looks amazing. He can drive up through anything to get to the front. He’s been first, fourth, and second in the first elimination round of the playoffs. Definitely the strongest of the field at them moment.
Christopher Bell continues to land pole positions and can’t manage to make it to victory lane.
Corey LaJoie finished the second stage in second place and I couldn’t be happier for him! He’s a “middle of the pack” racer and is not supposed to be up in front. He even lead a number of laps. He’s part of a smaller team and is getting better and better each weekend. 👍🏼
Last years Cup Champion, Joey Logano, is out of contention for this years championship after an accident forced him to retire the car.
Bubba Wallace continues to his race craft each and every week and has managed to get into the round of 12. I’m super happy for him and I hope he can make it to at least the round of eight. That would be an amazing accomplishment for 23XI Racing.
I know the Bristol Night Race is very popular but I found it extremely boring. After a couple laps of racing up front it seems like it turns into a single line of cars doing laps. Now, there were times where the racing did get interesting, but overall I found it boring. That’s not typical of a NASCAR race for me.
Bristol is not doing a dirt track next season. That’s too bad. I found that race to be much more exciting. Cars had multiple lines to choose from and the racing was exciting, not to mention Michael McDowell’s two spins that resulted in 360 degree saves. It was an incredible sight to behold.
Kevin Harvick is also out of the playoffs. It’s a real shame as it’s his final season as a driver and he has yet to win a race this year. The man proves his excellent fact crave as a driver every week as the Stuart Haas Racing cars aren’t very competitive, except for Harvick’s. Yes, he’s that good.
It was good to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Xfinity race on Friday night. He drove really well, lead a number of laps, and I have to believe he had a really great chance to win the entire thing but his car caught fire late in the race and he had to retire it. Let’s get that man back in a Cup car a few times a year!

Favorite livery was Tyler Reddick’s 45.
My picks for the Final Four.
• Kyle Larson - Hendrick Motorsports • Denny Hamlin - Joe Gibbs Racing • Chris Buescher - Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing • Tyler Reddick - 23XI Racing
Champion: Kyle Larson
If it’s not Larson I think it’ll be Denny Hamlin.
Of course I could be full of hot air with that list but I really like it!
