Summary: Dusk is just another outcast. Just another child for Ujiko to exploit once she reaches her full potential. The only difference between her and the others is that she's been plotting her escape since children started disappearing one by one. When the mysterious boy who's been asleep for three years wakes up, allowing her to break free, how will her life change now that she finally has someone she can count on?

Chapter 1: Runaways

“HE’S AWAKE! HE’S AWAKE!”

I can hear the children shrieking at the top of their lungs as they run by my room, and I jolt up in the small cot as the thin hospital gown clings to my lithe form. My name is Dusk Ryuuzaki, and I am fourteen years old with green eyes and pale skin. My dirty blonde hair hangs in my face, hiding my eyes like it has most of my life as I exhale upward, blowing the strands out of the way so I can see. My hair is long ; I’ve always been told to cut it, but I’ve never wanted to. I’ve been in this hospital for almost two years. I was twelve when Sensei “rescued” me and brought me here. I was living on the streets for only a day after my Quirkless parents threw me out. My Quirk is…complicated. I can painlessly transform myself into a dragon, yet the senses stay with me at all times. I have increased vision, sense of smell, sense of hearing, strength, and agility. Furthermore, I can breathe fire for about a full minute before it starts to hurt my throat. My Quirk times out in hour intervals, but they’ve gotten lengthier as I've gotten older. I’ve been practicing with the other children, honing our Quirks during our time at the hospital. Every now and then, one kid will disappear, never to be seen again. Sensei’s flower-faced friend assures us that they found a good home, but…I have to admit…things seem…suspicious. The one thing I’ve learned: don’t ask questions. Anyone who asks questions goes missing. Anyone who defies even the slightest order goes missing. Anyone who gets… too good at their abilities goes missing. So, I’ve swallowed my pride by deliberately messing up, taking careful note of every potential exit. I wanted to leave. I didn’t feel safe anymore. I decided to mask my curiosity. That is…except for my curiosity about the boy who just woke up.

He’d been in a coma for three years. Whenever we received breaks, the children would crowd around him, poking and prodding at him, wondering when he would wake up. They said the surgery took days; his skin was so badly burned that the doctor had to transplant practically all of it. Rumors circulated that he was some kind of Frankenstein's monster, but he didn't seem very monstrous to me. He seemed…peaceful…in an exhausted way. Oh, to be asleep for three years dreaming one’s life away. It sounds like a dream come true.

My bare feet hit the cold tile as I run down the hallway toward the large playroom. I stop dead in my tracks when I look through the open door to see the flower-faced friend speaking to him…and Sensei’s voice speaks through the computer screen in the playroom. I can’t see the boy…I can definitely hear him arguing with Sensei…no one ever argues with Sensei.

“No way…am I getting trained by anyone else.”

The voice is raspy and harsh, and the specific timbre chills my ears in a way that only particular sounds resonate.

“Well, you see. I’m afraid…we can’t let you do that,” Flower-faced ‘friend’ mutters, and, suddenly, his sunshine face contorts into an eldritch horror of a scowl.

‘This is what happens before the kids disappear.’

Flower-face lunges forward, and I watch as the kid dives beneath his legs, sliding and pushing himself to his feet as he breaks into a sprint, looking over his shoulder and not paying attention.

SLAM! THUD!

I cry out briefly as he runs right into me, knocking me over as we both fall to the ground. That’s when I see his eyes for the first time.

This boy has the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen; they're the most brilliant mix of sapphire and turquoise, like staring into the ocean itself. There’s no time to admire him; I can already hear Flower-face turning around.

“Get off me!” He shouts, shoving himself up as I jump to my feet, brushing off my gown.

“ You ran into me !” I retort before he starts running down the hall without a sideways glance.

“HEY!” I call after him; I know he’s running in the wrong direction. “COME BACK!”

I turn the corner and see him panicking at the dead end, staring up at the green and white checkered walls as if he’s about to have some sort of mental breakdown. He pulls at his hair, and, I swear his skin looks like it’s smoking.

“Hey, hey. This way! I know how to get out of here!” I call, waving him forward as I steal a glance over my shoulder. Flower-face slowly trudges down the hallway like a zombie; it’s like some kind of scene out of Stephen King.

“You’re just a stupid girl. What do you know?” he suddenly blurts, and my eyes narrow.

“Well, this stupid girl , is gonna get us both out of here. Are you in or do you wanna go to whatever fresh hell they have planned for us?” I snap, and he groans dramatically before dashing toward me. I run down the hall as I process the map I’d drawn in my head. Right as he catches up to me, I take a sharp left, using my draconic strength to break through the locked double doors as I force all of my body weight into the shove.

“Whoa,” the kid mutters under his breath as he follows me, and we burst into the courtyard. They only let us out here at night, but what I hadn’t considered was the enormous electric fence and barbed wire above the pillars.

“SHIT!” I hiss under my breath, and the boy raises his eyebrows.

“What do you mean shit ?! I thought you said you could get us out of here!” He screams, and a spark of anger flares in my chest.

“I CAN! LET ME THINK!” I shout back, and, suddenly, a sizzling sound creeps through the air; the boy’s tone shifts from rage to sheer terror.

“NO! NO! NO!” he stammers, and I realize that his skin is literally smoking.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” I stammer, registering the fear on his face.

“Get back! I don’t wanna hurt you!” he stutters, “Get away!”

Before I can blink, brilliant azure flames pour down his arms, leaping directly through the open double doors as they start to spread up the enormous compound. Within a few seconds, the flames only lick at his hands, and his eyes well with tears, only for them to evaporate within seconds. The blue flames remain in his palms as he thrashes his hands about.

‘He can’t control his Quirk.’

“HEY!” I shout, braving the heat and stepping closer as I shield my eyes from the blinding blue light.

“STAY BACK!” He screams; it’s a sound of pure anguish and confusion.

“HEY! I CAN HELP!” I snap, and, in a few steps, I’m right beside him. He looks at me like I’ve gone utterly insane. Another Quirk I inherited from my grandparents; my skin is fireproof.

I carefully take his hands in mine, pressing until our palms touch, and a faint hissing sound pierces the sky above the roaring flames in the hospital buildings. His eyes widen, staring into mine as if I’m some sort of alien life form.

“What…Who are you?” He stutters, a faint blush spreading across his cheeks as I stare up at him. He’s about half a foot taller than me, and his white hair is dusted with ash as the building continues to burn.

“Dusk Ryuuzaki. My Quirk is Fire Dragon; it’s three in one. That’s how. And…who are you ?” I smile, and he gulps as I release his hands, staring at his slightly singed palms.

“Touya. Touya Todoroki,” He stutters, and I nod.

‘Even his name sounds beautiful.’

“Nice to finally meet you. Now. If we’re going to get out of here-”

‘I CAN FLY US OUT! It’ll just be a little embarrassing…I need Support Gear clothes like that dragon hero.’

“How are we getting out? I’ve torched our only other exit?!” He exclaims, scratching his arm, and I slowly walk behind the lone tree in the courtyard.

“I said my Quirk is Fire Dragon. Do the math, Todoroki,” I snicker as I hide from him and, in one smooth motion, slip out of my gown. I ball it up and throw it around the tree straight for him.

“WHY ARE YOU GETTING NAKED?” He shouts, and I laugh.

“Oh, grow up. I don’t want to not have clothes whenever we get where we’re going. Can you hold onto that for me?” I call out as I begin to activate my Quirk. Painlessly, the change occurs; my skin turns over into dark purple scales, and my hair turns silver and forms a spiky ridge down my neck and two curved horns on my head, and a pair of silver wings sprout out of my back. As I’ve gotten older, my dragon form has gotten larger. I should be as big as Ryukyu when I’m an adult. Right now, I’m as big as a horse. I emerge from behind the tree, and Touya’s blinks, processing what just happened.

“Get on! We’re getting out of this place,” I growl, my voice coming out in a gravelly garble. He hesitates for a second, stealing one last glance at the blazing blue before hefting himself onto my back.

“Hold on to the spikes on my neck! It’s gonna be rough! I’ve never flown with anyone before,” I mutter.

“You wha- AHHHHH! SHIT!” He screams as I take to the air, flapping as hard as I can. He’s not too heavy, but it’s still like I have some cumbersome random weight on my back. He clings to my neck for dear life as I sail into the night sky.

“I’m gonna be sick,” He groans.

“If you puke, don’t get it on me,” I snort as I glide through the fog.

“Okay, I’m okay. I’m okay,” He slurs slowly, and I can feel his staggered breathing on the back of my neck.

“So…where…where should we go?” I ask as I steal a glance over my shoulder at him.

“I…I need to go home. I need to apologize to my family,” He murmurs quietly, and I cock my head.

“For what?” I pry, but he chews his bottom lip as he traces his hands over the lines on his face and neck from where they transplanted skin.

“I…don’t wanna talk about it,” He sighs.

“Well…where is home for you?” I yawn, and Touya sits up straighter.

“Suburban Musutafu. Do you know where that is?” He asks.

‘That’s where I used to live.’

“Yeah,” I mutter, and Touya pokes at the back of my neck. I look over my shoulder back at him once more; his cheeks glow a dull shade of pink in the moonlight.

“Hey, uh. Thanks…for…all that…back there. I know we just met but…I…I appreciate it,” He stutters, and I smile.

“Well…thanks for trusting me to get us out. I don’t know how much longer I would’ve let myself rot in there,” I remark as I return my attention to the horizon.

Touya’s been in the house for longer than he should’ve. He said he’d go inside, touch base with his family, and then they’d help me get home…I hadn’t told him that I didn’t even have one anymore. I'd already stopped using my Quirk and pulled the ratty hospital gown back on; I'm gonna need to find some real clothes to steal.

Wordlessly, Touya slips out of the back door, stalking back to me with his hands balled up into fists as tears stream down his face.

“Touya?”

“They thought I was dead. They thought I was dead…and nothing changed…,” He mutters to himself. I wouldn’t know anything about what he was referring to until later. He wipes away his tears.

“I guess, now, I’ll help get you home. Where is that for you?” He sniffs, staring at the ground.

“Nowhere,” I say without missing a beat. His eyes lift up to meet mine.

“Nowhere?” He echoes my words with a pitch at the end.

“Nowhere.”

His lips curl into a sad smile.

“Well…we both live nowhere now.”

Note

Do you perhaps have a list/numbers of chapters with important Dabi scenes in the manga? I don't feel like reading Mha at all anymore because Dabi is the only character I care about 😂

Things I expected from MHA because of the fandom VS canon

I started actively watching MHA last october, after dropping it years ago because the first two minutes bored me.

But in october I caught a fever and had absolutely 0 energy, so all I could do was resting on the sofa and watching TV. I decided to give MHA another chance, it looked chill and lighthearted after all, and I actually enjoyed it.

In fact, I enjoyed it so much I finished the whole thing in no time, and dragged one of my best friends along. In December I rewatched it with him again and ordered all the manga (including Smash, Team-Up Missions and the characters books). Now I'm up to date with every chapter, have merchandise, cosplays, read hundreds of fanfics and written a couple myself, and plan to go to one of the biggest conventions here in Italy all because of it.

I can almost say it saved me at the time. It wasn't a nice period, and MHA helped me a lot to ease my mind, find comfort and understand things from my own childhood. It gave me something to be excited for (like the weekly updates and the new season), other people to talk to, a creativity boost and even a job.

BUT!

I arrived in the fandom quite late, and the biggest reveals and theories had been already made (no, I didn't expect Dabi to be Touya, so thank you fandom for spoiling this :'D I was so mad!).

So here's a list of every difference between fanon and canon that shocked me - in other words, what happened in the manga that I didn't expect because of fans' headcanons. I'll keep this updated for my own pleasure v.v

EraserMic family & Shinso: I sincerely thought that Aizawa and Hizashi would be living together with Shinso and Eri (blame this on denki.darling on TikTok), and that we'd be seeing Shinso more frequently.

Hawks and the LoV: I believed Hawks would be spending some time with the whole gang, including Shigaraki, but they never actually met! He didn't even stay at their hideout, he only knew the PLF mansion in Gunga!

Hawks and Dabi: This is a tough one, as they're my supreme OTP. As I remarked in another post, they only share 6 canon moments together. Six. It's nothing. I was really convinced there would be more scenes of them together, also to build up the divorce betrayal scene, but there weren't. I started shipping them because of the fandom, not the anime, and only later caught up with the manga, so I spent a couple of days feeling really stupid and sad and questioning myself on why would I ship them if they really barely talked to each other. We don't even know about their first encounter! But eventually I sobered up and started shipping them even harder. Also, I totally fell for the childhood friends thing. Another stab in my heart when I found out it was purely fanon.

Dabi's past: Reading plenty of fanfiction, I thought Enji phisically forced him to train his quirk and that was the reason why Touya burned up and became Dabi, so when I read Dabi's past in the manga I was very lost, to say the least. I couldn't get it. Endeavor surely wasn't a nice father, but he wanted to protect Touya from his own quirk. He didn't push him! Instead, he pleaded him to let it go and focus on other things. It was Touya who did that to himself, and now throwing a tantrum because his dad didn't pay attention to him anymore. I started to dislike the character, and man, was I wrong. I reevaluated his whole story after chapter 350 in April. Seeing Touya like that, seeing him being afraid, alone, heartbroken and still wanting to apologize and put everything behind him broke me. And then he comes home to a household that seems to have forgotten about him, to a father that still beats his children, and that was his last straw, the final confirmation that his life never had meaning. Only then I started reading character analysis and understanding the truth. That neglecting children is abuse. That feeding a child with dreams up to the point they become his whole world and purpose and then stripping him from them is abuse. I was so blind to this and to my own childhood, because something very similar happened to me. Since then, I began relating to Touya a lot more. Not justifying his actions but understanding his pain.

Deku's corruption: This is stupid, but I was almost convinced he actually would have joined the League to be with Toga XD

With some exceptions for Quirkless Hero Izuku like Sleeper Hit or Prince of Heroes that are well-written and aren' t as angst filled with discrimination and whatnot, I feel like that Horikoshi editors have a point to make Izuku get a Quirk via OFA instead of being a Batman-like clone given the premise of MHA since the first volumes of MHA still have to succeed first before the rest can be made. If the story was about the rise of Batman in such a society, if may not hit well with the (JP) audience and we wouldn't get the 350+ chapters and 100+ episodes over the course of several years that we have now.

As popular as the Batman/Quirkless Hero Izuku in a superhero society concept is, especially for fanfics, there's still the fact that we would need to watch a teenager develop in high school and not the adult version for the official version, which might not be popular with the audience in the short and long term. At best, a Quirkless hero concept can only be a side series like Vigilantes and probably have the story be set in the USA given how Japanese society is in canon. A story like this can't become popular at first without a preexisting world, especially with what we've seen in competitive manga industry.

A topic into Quirklessness is best looking through these lens

I can't say for certain whether the editors made the right call about the protagonist having a power, but it's ultimately unnecessary to discuss Quirklessness. In fact, Midoriya no longer being Quirkless has incredible potential to discuss Quirklessness.

The series just... doesn't.

All Might was Quirkless and is again, but we still have no idea if Aldera is an outlier in discrimination or if other places are even worse. The anime added a line that UA used to prohibit Quirkless applicants and that tells us more than literally anything else in the manga.

Again, Shoji's face mask was a subtle nod towards the discrimination that he faced, and that's been there since Chapter Three.

Another very generic article by CBR... My Take on Ochako's popularity!

It was nice per say, to see some Uraraka content after a while, so here is my say on Ochako's popularity...

Ever since she was introduced, she was well liked among both, national (japanese) and international audience. She was cute, warm and a good friend to Deku. It was the time when the story was just beginning and there wasn't much to do.

Deny enrolling in UA and Ochako helping him out, there first brawl and then USJ. The Ochako moment that stood out to most fans including me was her arc in the sports festival, i.e. her battle with Bakugo.

It gave her a purpose to fight for and a strong backstory to back it up. Infact, in after 5 seasons of anime and 350+ chapters of manga, this is still considered as Ochako's best moment of all time and a lot of people still consider her as a favourite because of that. But this is when the downside came into picture: her obsession with Deku.

Most people aren't a fan of generic love interests and after finding out Ochako's entire character arc is going to be sacrificed just for that, we see a steep decline in her popularity.

From no 4, she declined to No 8!!

What makes it worse is that she doesn't get much screentime and development in the later arcs either as it is devoted to other comparatively new characters like Todoroki, Yaomomo and even Mineta.

So despite her plot points being introduced first, they are never really expanded upon in brief.

Despite being selfless as they were, it was treated as a wrong thing in Manga. Despite stating that she's poor, we never really see her struggling with money issues or managing her expensive life in UA.

Yeah, she still uses a fliphone but that's just about it. In the bonus material it was stated that she doesn't even eat sometimes to save money and that has caused her eating disorders but it's never explored in the manga.

Instead, her screentime is devoted to Mina teasing her about her crush as if they have no other important things to do in this world, while the boys are always practising to get stronger.

Yeah Horikoshi, women definitely are some alien species and don't have complex thoughts and problems of their own and talking about love is usually the only thing they do in their spare time, right?

We literally never really see her question her dreams with her reality. Like "don't heroes need money to survive?" Or "Aren't Heroes humans too? So what if they need money?" "It's our wrong?" "Is it still heroic?"

But nope! Instead, we get her creepy obsession storyline with Toga in an arc which wasn't well received by Japanese fans.

Surprise, surprise! It turned the tables as Toga turned out to be one of the most liked characters from MHA and eventually getting her own cover in the JUMP GIGA MAGAZINE.

And then viola! She decides to put her feelings aside for Deku as she thinks they were getting in their way of becoming heroes and again, surprise! In the next arc she gets next to no development at all!

The Overhaul arc was the final nail in the coffin for many stans because the arc that managed to last for 50+ chapters wasn't able to give a proper battle to Team Ryukyu.

They just appear in the starting and disappear for the rest of the arc, only to come back later claiming that they have won.

Of all the battles that took place, their battle was the only one finished off screen which is insulting considering in the next arc, Jirou already replaced Ochako as the female lead.

It was during this time, Ochako was at her lowest, barely managing to be in top 20 in the Japanese polls!

Season 5 did some scenes right and while something is better than nothing, but it can't ammend the mistakes of past where it looked like she just died as a character while all other people around her were growing only more and more dynamic.

And then again, we had war arc and we had Togachako 2.0 and again people were making videos like these...

It has 100k+ views of anyone wants to check out, it's available on YT. So yeah, her popularity declined again, despite recieving new moves, despite becoming more efficient in her hero work, this is what she gets.

Though, the recent arc did her some justice as she returned with a completely new vibe.

Many people were referring her as the SF Uraraka is back! Bringing home the fact that SF Uraraka is still very beloved and why wouldn't she. Everyone loves badass woman who can stand their own.

Her popularity is getting back on the track with each passing day. To think she is the female lead and she has never even achieved Top 3 and even now it only seems like a far fetched dream with tough competitors like Deku, Shouto and ofc, the unbeatable No 1 in popularity, LORD EXPLOSION MURDERER, KATSUKI BAKUGO!

Honestly at this point, even if she achieves a spot in top 10 in the polls that would already be like a gold medal to her growing character arc.

Although, even as an Ocha fan I still find it hard to believe that she'll be able to best the likes of Iida, Hawks, Kirishima and Aizawa that are already too well liked among the fans.

So yeah, this was my briefing on Ochako's popularity over the recent years.

She was established to be a week liked character but with the introduction of other charcters and her losing the focus of the main story, her popularity declined.

Even in the current poll, she was at 12th spot which only further amplifues the fact that she recieved her development too late in the story. Either way, she's working her way up and I would definitely be surprised if she isn't a part of top 10 already this time.
