Merlin always jokes how big Arthur's head is.

One day Arthur get's mad and puts his crown on Merln'sto proof they have the same size.

They don't.

Merlin's head is much smaller. But the crown get's caught on the ears.

Arthur has never seen anything more adorable in hid life.

Lancelot: Wow, you're so brave! You didn't even hesitate to throw yourself in danger.

Merlin: That's because I have no regard for my own personal safety. You can ask Arthur.

Arthur: *cowers in a corner in his room, more than half drunk and delirious*

One second he is breathing his last breath, merlin’s tear filled eyes glowing golden to the sound of merlin’s word, the next, he’s standing in camelot on the knight’s training ground and merlin’s blue eyes are filled with indignation.

“That was my mistake. I’d never be friends with someone who could be such an ass.”

It’s disorienting to say the least.

The pain in his chest has vanished, replaced by the pleasant buzz of exercise. The aching in his left knee from an old injury has vanished. There is now day instead of night. A light breeze is flowing and the air is warmer than it had been. He can hear people all around him where there had been the silence of a forest. But most important is that merlin looks achingly young. Gone is the weight of a burden pressing harder and harder down on him as the years passed. Gone is the sorrow from his eyes. Seeing merlin like this is as elating as it’s painful. Because the recognition is also gone. The knowledge of arthur that no other person held. of knowing and being known by someone better that one knew oneself. or atleast arthur had thought so until merlin confessed he had lied about a vital part of himself for the past ten years. 

loosing that with merlin feels like a stab worse than the wound that had been killing him just moments before.

As confused as he is by the situation he notices the audience they’re gaining and arthur has been trained since birth to appear to be in control of things and to always know exactly what is going on and going to happen.

so he says something insulting in response to this lier, this young, this wrong version of merlin and before he knows it they’re arguing, taunting and daring  each other - it feels like a tiny piece of hope that maybe he hasn’t lost merlin forever.

Merlin ends up in the stocks - again, he think’s it’s been too long to remember clearly - and arthur leaves to his rooms to have a breakdown out of the public’s eye.

Okay so I love the whole thing where Merlin is sadly waiting for Arthur to come back, but ALSO, I would love to see more fics where he is immortal and having fun with friends who are likely magical creatures hidden in plain sight.

I want to see him being a clumsier and wackier version of a Magnus Bane type of person, taking Arthur by surprise with the life he's made for himself.

I don't really ship anyone in Merlin but boy do I love Mercelot
