Peter Lorre: Merchant of Menace
Article from "Motion Picture" magazine, February 1945, by Michael Sheridan.
Tumblr media
Keep scrolling past the cut to see close-ups of the delectable images - most (all?) of which seem to be from this photoset (and, sidenote, does that change anything about our dating of it?) - PLUS the full article that includes such gems as:
"Gory Lorre"
Calling Humphrey Bogart "Bogartburger" and wishing he could call Edgar Bergen "Bergenburger"
An underground Hollywood legend about his knife collection
The assertion that Peter rarely goes to nightclubs, preferring to "follow the sun with the same sly precision he trails most of his movie victims."

This last close-up is so you can read the inset better - and also I love how they made sure to get at least one burning cigarette in this spread:

Okay, now for the print!
The above shots and these first three images are from a partial copy found on the internet. The rest are from the magazine I tracked down. As such, my copy is creakily old and faded and I took pictures of it with my phone, not scanned (eep!) - but hopefully you can still read it.
And as always, take all Peter Lorre articles with a major side-eye...

"I don't think I would be at ease in such company."
If he really said that, that's a riot!

nehhh... guess I'm biting the bullet and finally posting this, since my hyperfixation is back with a vengeance and cringe culture is dead... (it has taken me three days to work up the courage to post this and I actually have a nervous stomach about posting)
This fluffy cretin is Peri and they're my RE:Village oc! They're a partial lycan... more info is under the cut. Plz be nice I'm unreasonably nervous. More info under the cut!!
Tumblr media
Due to managing to get treated on time, their transformation was halted, hence why Peri is more human than the other lycans in the village (the scars on their face are from the attack that turned them). They have heightened senses associated with the transformation. (Note: can be drawn as a more traditional lycan from in game, or even as one of the more advanced stages of the infection. However their personality will remain intact)
However, their brain is partially rewired, so they do have their moments of behavioral lapse. This includes, but is not limited to: breaking or wandering into others houses for shelter, including the Lords (note. They have their own house.), pack mentality randomly kicking in and leading to them randomly following groups of people, bouts of excitability akin to a puppy, and the very rare bouts of bloodlust.
They work making deliveries for the Duke when he's unable to do so, carting goods in her own wagon that she pulls along. Sometimes they struggle to pull it depending on the cargo though. Sometimes the deliveries end up late because Peri can and will talk people's ears off after giving them what they ordered, seeing they generally want to be everyone's friend. (That or they'll get distracted by who knows what)
Peri is very clingy if allowed to bond with someone, or if they just decide they like someone enough regardless of how well they know said person or creature. The reasons for this can be varied. They will often leave gifts for those they're fond of or close too, usually just odds and ends they've found that they think are interesting enough to be a gift.

US cover reveal: SWORDCROSSED
are we readyyyyyyyyyyy
Tumblr media
Illustration by Cynthia Sheppard, art direction by Christine Foltzer. Yes those are RED SPRAYED EDGES and yes this is a ROMANCE CLINCH.
High heat. Low stakes. Sharp steel.
Mattinesh Jay, dutiful heir to his struggling family business, needs to hire an experienced swordsman to serve as best man for his arranged marriage. Sword-challenge at the ceremony could destroy all hope of restoring his family’s wealth, something that Matti has been trying—and failing—to do for the past ten years. What he can afford, unfortunately, is part-time con artist and full-time charming menace Luca Piere. Luca, for his part, is trying to reinvent himself in a new city. All he wants to do is make some easy money and try to forget the crime he committed in his hometown. He didn’t plan on being blackmailed into giving sword lessons to a chronically responsible—and inconveniently handsome—wool merchant like Matti. However, neither Matti’s business troubles nor Luca himself are quite what they seem. As the days count down to Matti’s wedding, the two of them become entangled in the intrigue and sabotage that have brought Matti’s house to the brink of ruin. And when Luca’s secrets threaten to drive a blade through their growing alliance, both Matti and Luca will have to answer the question: how many lies are you prepared to strip away, when the truth could mean losing everything you want?

Taylor's use of fear tactics is like, just consistently so fucking funny. She tries so hard to appear menacing and scary and because of it she just becomes a one woman horror movie and I love her for it. Like that one fight with the merchants in 11.3, she surrounded a group of people with swarm clones that slowly approached them and closed the distance, and one by one the people tried to run through and collapsed under the bugs, and then she purposefully let the last guy go. And then for no reason other than being a dramatic dumbass, she herded him into alleyways and had him run until she had a swarm clone materialize at the end of the alleyway he was in, and then another one behind him when he turned around, and then she had them both slowly move towards him while growing ominously with more bugs.
His head whipped around as he realized he had no escape routes left, and then he screamed, a primal, despairing sound.
C'mon Taylor, you fucking broke him. What the hell girl. She says its to send a message and have the fear build her reputation, standard stuff that she stole from Bakuda and justifies as ok because she's the one doing it so its fine, but still what the hell! Would it not be terrifying enough to just fucking drown them all in bugs? Why did you need to put them in the horror movie situation? She's so fucking deranged, she does this shit constantly too. Has her bugs ripple in her hair to make it fan out like wind is blowing, the swarm voice, everything she does is so dramatic because she thinks she needs to be scary to survive even when she's already incredibly terrifying without even trying. I swear to god no cape puts as much thought into their presentation as Taylor does.
Oh also that whole fight where she put the guy in Bug Clone Stalking Hell took place while she drank a cup of tea, and she cared more about the fact that the tea was bitter than the fact that she just broke some poor bastard's mental stability in half with bugs. So much wrong with her.

Cosmere Characters: Would They Be Good at Pulling Pranks?
Yesterday was April 1, aka April Fools Day, a holiday that encourages people to pull pranks. So that got me wondering: if such a holiday existed in the Cosmere, would various Cosmere characters be good at this whole "pranking" thing?
1. Syl: Yes, but only of one type
Syl is a prankster in canon: she likes to stick things together! Your shoes to your floor, your hand to your spear, your butt to your chair...so yes, she is great at pranks. I bet if April Fool's Day existed in the Cosmere, she would be an absolute menace.
2. Lopen: Depends on who you ask...
I think Lopen's pranks would be like his jokes: not intended to be mean, but actually kinda mean. In Dawnshard, Lopen came to learn that his jokes were not universally fun and beloved, and I feel like his journey with pranks would necessarily be similar. He'd love pulling them, though!
3. Wayne: Yes, and everyone has fun
Sanderson once said that the difference between Lopen & Wayne is that Wayne can read the room. So I think Wayne would not only like pranks, but would also be more aware of their effect. Like...if Lopen is tying your shoelaces together when you're late for work, Wayne is putting googly eyes (which he invented) on all of your family photos while you're out.
4. Sarene: Yes (mostly against Iadon)
Sarene, Miss Malicious-compliance-and-weaponizer-of-other-people's-misogyny, would love an excuse to "accidentally" prank Iadon. She'd either do really obvious pranks and blame them on feminine confusion ("Oh dear I just wanted to clean but I guess washing your portrait ruined it??") or do really sneaky pranks that no one could trace back to her (cut to Sarene secretly weakening the seams on all of Iadon's clothing so that a good sneeze will make them all fall off).
5. Kaladin: Not anymore
We know that in canon Kaladin pulled pranks as a kid--he told Tien to save a lurg to dump in their dad's bath later. But I feel like nowadays, Kaladin is too gloomy and glowering to pull pranks. He might just enjoy Syl's sometimes though...
6. Steris: Maybe they're just not the most creative...
I think that if a Pranking Holiday existed, Steris would study up and do a textbook prank. Like, she's replacing Wax's sugar bowl with salt, and then he drinks a sip of salty coffee, and then she says, "Ah ha! You have been Pranked per the Social Conventions of today's Holiday!" And Wax would be genuinely delighted.
7. Dalinar: No--not at any point in his life
Blackthorn Dalinar would think a prank is "stabbing a guy in the leg and laughing." Modern-day Dalinar would be puzzled that anyone actually does pranks--aren't they, you know, kinda beneath you? The Codes would DEFINITELY not allow them.
8. Sigzil: No, too much paperwork
The Prank Authorization Form is 7 pages and takes 5 weeks for review and approval. Who has that kind of time???
9. Lift: Yes, absolutely
I can see Lift positioning buckets of water over, like, Dalinar's door or slicking the floor right as that merchant she saw yelling at kids walks by. Now--imagine Lift & Syl going on a prank spree together. You're welcome.
10. Hoid: Nobody knows
Hoid put paperclips in the pockets of every single one of Elhokar's outfits. He put edible glitter into Rock's stew, turning it into Glitter Stew. He found one of Kaladin's buttons on the ground and straight-up ate it while making direct eye contact.
But...were any of those things pranks? Were they plots? Were they just Hoid being Wit?
Nobody knows.
