I would have loved to see more interactions with the seelies- people who can’t lie but are crafty and secretive sounds fascinating. Think of the dialog! Alec going to magnus for advice since he has centuries of experience talking to them, Alec playing mental chess while trying to maintain peace. Would have loved getting more- but let’s be real, Cassaundra and the show writers weren’t clever enough to actually make any conversations like that of value.
SAME!!!!! honestly i would have loved to see so much more of the seelies. like bro do you understand that their culture predates the VERY EXISTENCE OF HUMANITY??? they are the ONLY kind of downworlders whose culture is completely detached from any human culture, not only because of predating it, but also because of the relative isolationism - which means human culture barely had any influence on their culture and history AS it developed
so like you can literally go fucking bonkers??????????? you can make ANYTHING. they have a whole ass society that doesn't have to have ANY ties to mundane concepts or history AT ALL. complete creative freedom. you could do ANYTHING! and don't get me started on the potential this has, within storytelling, to contextualize a lot of stuff modern western culture sees as natural or timeless as actually pretty fucking specific - like monogamy, cisheteropatriarchy, the gender binary, racism. all immortals have that potential of course since they can come from an array of different cultural and historical backgrounds but seelies in particular have SO much potential that is NEVER! FUCKING! USED! it all goes to waste and they are just a generic vaguely monarchic society that behaves literally exactly as modern western cultural standards. WHY. i'll never stop being salty, especially within sh where all this potential was there and instead they just villainized the seelies like no tomorrow for nO FUCKING REASON, and included a whole plotline about their ruler being a terrible power-hungry person and then proceeded to act as if that would have no influence on the seelies under her rule? thanks for nothing
like i know the seelie queen was so badly written that her own motivations even as a power-hungry wacko didn't make sense or were consistent (like why give simon the mark of cain for example, and for god's sake what kind of power-hungry crazy bitch gives their main enemy the power to literally kill her and destroy everything she has at the blink of an eye, like??? she literally tried to assist in her own genocide, it makes no fucking sense, i fucking hate it here) but if they are going to make her Terrible the least they could do was show how that impacted the people under her rule, especially if they are going to have meliorn be fucking tortured and either forced to display the marks of said torture or choosing to display them themself, like? please give your plotlines one singular thought
but of course it's easier to villainize seelies and reduce them to their obviously tyrannical ruler so they can go back to focusing on the shadowhunters and their issues. nevermind the fact that seelies are obviously equivalent to native ppls/third world countries resisting colonialism/imperialism in sh's stupid ass racial metaphor, which makes making their ruler a big bad unequivocally evil villain that is ruining everything A Choice. and a particularly choicy Choice considering they cast a middle-eastern man to play the most important seelie character. but if they are going to do that they could at least address how the people under her rule suffer and how that's a direct consequence of shadowhunter colonialism and interference, but why would we fkcnig thdo that!!!! when we can have love triangle drama or whatever
and tHEN there is the whole aspect of being unable to lie which is bound to have such an impact on their culture and history since they have to rely on other forms of communication to protect themselves - and considering the whole "tyrannical rule" plotline, to further the queen's agenda in the first place. and how telling the truth without preamble would probably be considered a huge display of trust in a society that has culturally developed so many ways of talking around things. like again the potential of the cultural and historic background for that society! it makes me go insane!!!
anyway all of that to say #JusticeForSeelies and #SeeliePlotlinesNow 2021 and forever. and YES i would have loved to see more interactions between them and other characters, particularly magnus because 1- admittedly i'm a hoe; and 2- magnus was clearly the one that had the most experience talking to seelies and that others relied on for that communication. he also seemed to be the most comfortable with them, which indicates there is either some sort of history there, or magnus just happens to feel relatively at home with the workings of their culture. which makes sense, because magnus also had to develop pretty similar defense mechanisms due to his, A- work as a warlock representative who has to interact with shadowhunters on the regular; B- history with having to deal with asmodeus, which required him to be very smart about what he disclosed and how, especially considering that he had to have been planning banishing asmodeus for a long time before he got to do it; and C- just history with abuse in general. we've seen the way he closed his heart off to new people; but at the same time, magnus is obviously an extrovert and likes to be around people in general. this meant that, in order to be able to both be in the kind of environment where he thrives and protect himself/his heart/his feelings, he had to learn how to interact with people while putting on a convincing façade, which requires pretty much the same sorts of wordplay and defense mechanisms that seelies use
magnus is good at wordplay, he's good at using talking to his benefit; we've seen that. he is also good at hiding and deflecting. he is notably not good at directly lying - every time he directly said A Lie such as "i am perfectly fine and not bothered by this at all :)" it was way less convincing than it was a clear display that he wouldn't budge. even alec, who has difficulty with social cues, noticed the lying and seemed concerned about it. so like. clearly his defense mechanisms were less lying and more dancing around subjects, directing conversation to safe topics, and guiding people to making certain assumptions and seeing sides of his that were safer and he preferred
so in that way it makes sense that magnus is somewhat in his element when dealing with seelies. i think "comfortable" is a strong word because this whole song and dance takes a huge toll on anyone's mental health and energy (which i think is something that could be very interestingly explored in seelies, their collective psyche, and their culture, the way they build relationships, etc. let meliorn have partners they feel 100% comfortable talking without preamble with 2k21), but it's something he is used to and a dynamic he can fall into without as much effort as others who would be second guessing themselves more and going slower, which clearly gives the seelies, who are used to it, an advantage
and like i know that i'm implying a confrontation or sort of situation where they are on opposing sides to seelies here, which i kind of am because i am thinking mostly about magnus' interactions with the seelie queen specifically, since she was the seelie he had the most meaningful interactions with. his interactions with meliorn were very few and almost never relevant, i barely remember them happening outside of generic downworld cabinet interactions tbh. but i don't just mean that because again, stop villainizing seelies 2k21
i also mean just generally that magnus would be in a more comfortable position talking to seelie strangers and slowly working into building a relationship and mutual trust. and just generally understanding them and the workings of their culture because he can empathize with the way they have built their social defense mechanisms. no one is 100% truthful to strangers, but seelies always seem kind of- analytical. and the cultural difference + anti-seelie racism makes them seem untrustworthy to most people, but magnus Gets It, so the potential for friendships! and the mutual understanding and the relative comfort around each other! and both parts understanding the enormity that is letting their walls down gradually and being more direct as time goes by. like.... aaaaaa
and yes magnus becomes a sort of reference on talking to seelies, mostly because he is good at "playing their game", but also making it a point to humanize seelies and making the other parts understand where they are coming from and how they feel :) and just improving their relations, particularly with other downworlders
im not going to get into alec because 1- the relationship between shadowhunters and seelies is already filled with oppression and a lot of complications, and particularly now that the seelie realm is politically fragile due to the loss of their ruler (however terrible she might have been), it would play into either white savior narratives or just straight up colonialism, especially given how alec as a leader already has a history of trying to build tutelage over downworlders (i don't care what his intentions were, it's still true, and although he's learning... well. he's learning, continuous action); 2- that would be more a relationship of opposition and i'm not that interested in that. but i would love to see seelies rebuilding themselves and their relationships and alliances with other downworlders particularly, and all the better if magnus is playing a part in that :)

They're going to keep to the book connections as much as possible and which were if I remember correctly Alec/Magnus and Clary/Simon so those two are definitely happening. Which leaves Jace, Izzy, Meliorn and Lorenzo. And considering Jace owes Meliorn a debt it only seems logical he connects to him. Leaving Izzy with Lorenzo.
So those worried Alec is going to share an alliance rune with Lorenzo can chill out.

I hope I'm not a bother but I've questions that bothers me & I would really love to hear your thoughts about it. Lilith killed all of the seelies knight so did Meliorn died? What do you think about Cat suggested Magnus to seek Asmodeus for help? That has been bothering me.. And what do you think Magnus had gone through as a child with Asmodeus? I cried when Magnus said 'I was a child' in those wrecked voice so I can't stop thinking about what did Asmodeus made him do when he was a child..

Nope. Meliorn wasn’t shown in that scene and we know Jade was filming during the production of 3B. Our savage Seelie Knight is alive and well. Maybe Meliorn wasn’t in the court during Lilith’s attack?
What do you think about Cat suggested Magnus to seek Asmodeus for help?
Not the biggest fan of that, ngl. Cat was the one that brought the news that the warlocks couldn’t help Magnus (not in Brooklyn, and probably not in the US, considering she mentioned a High Council). I get that she knew that plan was done with. But to suggest seeking Asmodeus? That plot device was too on the nose for my taste.
I’d rather she’d told Magnus to “look somewhere else”. Maybe even throw a “you are the most powerful warlock I know. All you need is already inside you” or something to make Magnus think of his heritage. That wasn’t the smoother writing.
And what do you think Magnus had gone through as a child with Asmodeus?
Magnus said Asmodeus taught him to be a “proper” warlock. I imagine that means Asmodeus taught him how to use and control his magic, how to bend it to his will. I also imagine those lessons were less “make that rock fly” and more “destroy everything”.
Magnus was a kid when Asmodeus brought him to Edom. Kids are ruled by their emotions and I’m sure Asmodeus preyed on that. He probably fueled every bad emotion Magnus had, channeling it into destructiveness. We see bits of that when Magnus snaps when in anger. Only now he can control himself and stop before he hurt others.
By the way, I don’t think it is a coincidence that Magnus is the strongest fighter we’ve seen among warlocks. Lorenzo could use offensive magic, but Magnus can fight with it. He has a technic to it, one that allowed him to harness more power and hit just the right way.
We also have to remember that “child”, to warlocks, can mean anything from 5 to 105 years. We don’t know how long Magnus stayed with Asmodeus. A lot could have happened and I wouldn’t rule murder and torture out of the picture. Whatever Asmodeus felt like would make Magnus a better ruler.

Luke’s Reaction to the Racial Profiling
I liked the touch of how Luke had a noticeably different reaction to the unfair racial profiling of the downworlders by the Clave.
Even though Luke has very clearly experienced discrimination as a downworlder, and likely as a Black man, he has a more complex relationship with this narrative than initially evident.
Notice how Magnus, Maia, Dot, Raphael, Meliorn, Simon, and Luke all reacted to giving a DNA sample based on zero evidence and being GPS tracked:
Magnus protested the DNA check but was forced to comply angrily and as an act of defiance while scathingly judging the treatment because it was Alec who asked him. (I honestly think he would have cursed anyone else who tried this stunt.)
Dot chose to run when she saw them coming and protested the racial profiling because she was a woman/witch, an Asian woman at that, living during the Salem Witch Trials when so many women and even some men were violently murdered in bogus “legal” trials.
Maia took a more physical approach to her protest because she knows what it was like to be harassed and stopped by the NYPD for being Black. (This reaction was a very Anti-Fascist and Black Panther stance, imo.)
Raphael refused the racial profiling DNA and GPS protocols because of the downworlders’ history of being hunted, brutalized, tortured, and murdered but he volunteered critical information with regards to his knowledge of the crimes to help the shadowhunters solve the case while avoiding using fascist methods. (Perhaps he was more willing to help because of his lingering feelings for Izzy. Arguable.)
Meliorn chose to avoid the shadowhunters and hunt down the culprit on his own, either to kill her himself or turn her in to the Clave.
Simon refused based on his own family’s history of being Jewish in Poland during the Nazi Regime and explained exactly how the Clave’s current methods mirror those horrendous acts.
Luke volunteered to give his blood in the idea that he had nothing to prove and in slight defiance but drew the line at the Clave policing his wolves and at the GPS chip tracking.
I don’t know if this was intentional but I honestly think it’s because he was a shadowhunter (fantasy cop) and is currently a member of the NYPD.
Luke lived his formative years as a member of the privileged class, then got pulled into a hate group/cult, then joined the NYPD. Because of his experiences on the other side of this fantasy race-coded inequality as a shadowhunter and former Circle member, Luke is more likely to side with shadowhunter ways. He’s shown this before in the show while doing what Clary wants.
I don’t mean to imply that he is an “Uncle Tom” or that he is not a minority or has never experienced shadowhunter discrimination against werewolves. That idea is patently not true. I also don’t want to imply that his method of handling the situation was the wrong way or the right way. I put no value in that. Each person reacted according to their own personal experiences. In that vein, I think Luke’s previous life and his current NYPD status made him have a different reaction to the racial profiling than anyone else.
He has his limits, of course, as he can see the inequality of this entire thing and he refused to have his wolves chipped and was very firm that he would police his own pack himself. So he was riding that line as his personal tactic for how he would protect himself and his people, which I think suited him as a leader last episode.
Anyway, just some thoughts I was having while thinking about the episode. Feel free to add on.

20. What is something you wish more people noticed about this fic?
probably that this fic was as much a meta-critique of the way the show handled costuming/styling for magnus in seasons 2-3 as much as it was an in-text exploration of gender expression, sexuality, and (to an extent) internalized homophobia. that blooper from season 2 of matthew saying "you look very...season 1" after there's a brief return to color-and-glitter magnus after the body-swap episode was honestly very telling, and while i love a good waistcoat on a beautiful man, the "let's take just a TON of the softness out of this character" choices were...very loud. (a few people did pick up on it in the comments, though!)
21. What is something you didn’t expect people to notice or gravitate towards in this fic?
people really latched onto the wink toward magnus/meliorn (and to an extent, magnus/meliorn/alec) which is not something i have any intention to write but also still found both hilarious and delightful.

Hello, Jilly :) You probably wont see this. But I was wondering if you wrote any metas/fics regarding Alexander's first time with Magnus on here, Twitter or whatever? I mean the way YOU feel it all went down. Would you mind sharing the links? I'd love to read it if it's not too much trouble to ask.
I absolutely still check my tumblr nonny, I usually see my messages (minus the occasional tumblr glitch of course). I’m not always in a place where I can reply quickly, but. 🤷♀️ (Eventually is better than never?)
Anyways.
I haven’t really written or meta’d about their first time, though I was considering writing something for it for my soulmark fic, if I ever manage to get back to it, something mostly very sweet and slow, probably. On kind of the opposite end of the spectrum, I do also have a PWP ‘pro bono’ canon divergent thing I twitter-threaded about, though I’ve not managed to write that one either: https://twitter.com/faejilly/status/1159137895040606208?s=20
RE: The actual show, I honestly quite liked what 2x18 did, and never felt any particular need to add to it via fic. They’re happy, giggling and delighted in each other in a way sex scenes usually don’t portray. But sex (especially purposeful first time together in a relationship sex) should be happy, or why are you doing it?
It seems obvious, from the way Alec acts around Jace and Izzy when they’re being overtly/casually sexual (re: Meliorn & ‘the book club’ etc.), ie straight-forward and neither judging or embarrassed, from how he had a harder time telling Magnus that he’d never had a relationship rather than the fact that he’d never kissed/had sex before, that TV!Alec doesn’t have a lot of sexual hang-ups. He isn’t upset about Magnus’ sexual history, he just thinks Magnus will be upset with his lack of one in comparison. He’s not exceedingly anxious about having sex with Magnus for the first time, just a perfectly reasonable :new thing?: level of anticipation/caution. (I think his behavior could easily be read that he’s not nervous for himself, but for whether it’s a reasonable thing to expect out of Magnus at this point in their relationship.. though obviously that’s not where the text of the show went, I don’t think it’s an entirely nonsensical interpretation of the subtext/performances.) There’s... not a lot to do with that for a fic beyond fluff/smut moments, which I feel like I do quite a lot of, even if it’s not specifically their first time.
I will say, if you want a really good “what does it mean to start a sexual relationship?” fic, I’d recommend “before we begin” by thingswithwings (twitter/ao3/dw) because it hits pretty much everything I feel like I might have tried to say so I’ve never felt any particular need to try my own hand at it.
Not to say that people shouldn’t write multiple takes on the same concept/trope/etc... I just. *shrugs* Never really occurred to me? I’m not against the idea of it, I just haven’t had any particular ideas for it either? I mean, I’ll add it to the Unending WIP List of Doom and see if anything comes of it, but I have no idea if/when that might happen.

3x20 Reaction / Commentary
I wonder why, considering it wasn't hard at all. They barely had a plan and even had time to include some personal drama in their fight. Wtf. The only thing I can imagine why no one ever managed to kidnap her before is because no one wanted to have a hostage as irritating as the seelie queen.
Hahahahahaha hilarious. Also, lol, no I'm choosing not to think of the implications because they are TOO DISTURBING, YOU HEAR ME @intezaarlily XD XD XD
HAHAHA I CAN'T THE WAY SHE PETULANTLY SHAKES HER HEAD
I mean, compelling argument. And very fitting since we learned from that Lilith Debacle that the Shadowhunters' go to solution for everything and anything is torture.
But what I find way more interesting is that we finally get a good look at the side of the seelie queen's crown.
's pretty.
There's so much to unpack in this scene. Which I'm gonna do, in excruciating detail. In a relationship analysis post thingy, not here, because time and space reasons. Just know that this scene is absolutely amazing, their facial expressions and gestures, and of course the pretzel. Dammit, so amazing. Can't wait to fawn over it all.
I'm with Meliorn on this one. Just because Lanaia committed a violation of the Accords (yes, on behalf of the seelie queen but the shadowhunters have no way of knowing that and I guess Meliorn wasn't stupid enough to tell them that) doesn't mean Clary can violate the Accords back and go unpunished. That's not how a legal system works. It's clear that with this whole operation the shadowhunters valued Clary's life over that of however may seelie guards' it would have taken to keep Jace's cover and get Clary back. I bet you Alec is aware of that and that's why he has that pinched look on his face the whole time. And while he argues pro shadowhunter side with that injection about Lanaia and he tries to placate Meliorn, he noticable doesn't try to justify Jace's actions at all, and whenever Jace does, Alec closes his eyes as if he's thinking “Dude don't you realize that's not an argument.”
And then he just wants to leave???? Hahaha creep
HAHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD COMEDIC GOLD. The way he delivers that line I can't!!! The way he says “naturrrrrr” hahaha delicious.
Uh if that's the smartest move? Who knows what kind of kinky shit Meliorn will demand in return?? I mean, just look at his smirk. Also, in case this doesn't get addressed again this is such a ficlet waiting to be written lol.
The way Alec immediately starts almost-crying when someone mentions Magnus pulls on my heartstrings. Fragile darling boy.
I mean, I'm pretty sure Alec carrying the ring around in his pocket was for meta reasons so he could give it to Maryse in their only scene together, but dammmnnn the in universe implications. Ouch.

There wouldn't have been some Prime Drama if he'd behaved like a sensible person. Ugh.
The way Lorenzo's face falls upon hearing Asmodeus is priceless. But, uh, important question, how the hell does he know Asmodeus's face? Or does he identify him by his powers? Then again he failed identifying Asmodeus's power signature before already (3x02) so uuhhhh I need answers.

Yeah I still have questions about that. But sure, whatever. Then again, if Jordan is so long-fingered he could start a career as pickpocket. Sounds like a stable income job to me.
See, the problem here is that this isn't fixing any of Maia's problems. Apart from the fact that currently she has no problems to fix as far as I'm concerned (the dead pack won't be miraculously resurrected if she becomes human) her issues with her family aren't due to her being a werewolf. She's adjusted to her life as a werewolf and if you ask me, she's grown to love it and she doesn't want to go back. Hell, she wanted to become alpha. She's working on building her own pack now. Someone who hates being a werewolf wouldn't do that.
Very obviously, his line of reasoning makes sense for Jordan because he can't forgive himself for turning and abandoning Maia, which he views as ruining her life. So by reversing it he could finally start to atone for what he did. Perfectly ic, but very frustrating because as I pointed out, this won't benefit Maia in any way, it'll just create drama between the two of them. (And frankly, while I moderately care about both of them, I'd rather have Malec on my screen. Sue me.)
Uh-huh, so some werewolf praetor spy with binoculars saw that Jordan stole the vial from the Institute but Izzy and Simon, who were literally in the same room didn't. No questions, your honor.
Also ngl, since I knew this scene from the sneak peek already and couldn't care less about Luke's stupid Praetor plotline I skipped this scene XD #sorry not sorry
I know a lot of people were relieved Clary didn't make out with Jonathan and I'm honestly so surprised why people would assume in the first place there was any risk for that. Despite the Evil Rune taking hold she's still aware of her feelings, for example her love for Jace etc. So why would she suddenly be into incest?
Hehehehe the likelyhood of Asmodeus getting trashed in that loft is growing XD
(Also please appreciate how I'm keeping my salt about Maryse's “I love you” under wraps, I'm amazed at my self restraint.)
I mean, I was really surprised by a character actually taking action, trying their hand at communication like this. I am impressed. The thing that I slightly dislike is that it's Maryse. She didn't have all the info about the deal Alec made with Asmodeus and a) Izzy had and I really, really expected her to do something about that instead of just letting Alec wreck his life and, to a good part, Magnus's as well, and b) if even Maryse, without even knowing for sure that Magnus's magic returned after Alec broke up with him, could put two and two together, why the hell didn't Magnus??
I can half buy that with his issues and insecurites striking harder than ever, amplyfied by the severe grief of his magic loss, he'd fall for Alec's lies because to him Alec loving him the way he did was too good to be true anyway, and their relationship wasn't long enough for Magnus to really get used to the idea that he gets to keep this. It's obvious in the way he always keeps his eyes closed after they kiss, this moment of disbelieve that this is actually real. So Alec breaking up with him wouldn't be an unreastic thing, it would be reality finally catching up with them, it'd be the universe rightening itself.
But, I only half buy it. Because even if Magnus had doubts about himself and his worth, how the hell could he revisit all those memories in 3x19 where Alec was dropping wedding vows left and right, and not realize that something about Alec was off there.
Anyway, dwelling on this is pointless because what's done is done, but it's a very weak explanation and very convenient, story telling wise.

I love everything about this, okay. I love how Alec just gives in because he couldn't stand to be apart from Magnus for one more second. I love how this is reminiscent of their first kiss at Alec's fail wedding. (Btw can you believe we're gonna start and end Malec with a kiss at a wedding and a wedding kiss? The poetry.) I love the backdrop, the absolute destruction. Love Izzy in her rightful place in the first row since she's the Captain of the MS Malec.
I really appreciate that they bothered with an explanation why Magnus needs to go to Edom at all, but, uh, if memory serves right he closed a rift to Edom in 2x19 and it was no big deal. I'd buy that this rift is larger or more powerful because it was created by the Morgenstern Sword but just because I can find an explanation that this task is harder than one Magnus already accomplished onscreen with relative ease doesn't mean it's not the Show’s duty to deliver an explanation of its own accord instead of letting fans pick through their worldbuilding and figuring out something that makes sense. A simple “You closed rifts before, from Earth.” - “This rift is too large” would have been enough. Is that too much to ask.

Magnus REALLY should have pulled the portal down on himself and not flown into it like a flying fish jumping out of the water wtf hahaha.
Then again this is proof he can totally do the superman flight and it is CANON that he did that at some point. He had a whole annoying phase where he'd just fly around like a super hero. Cat was so done with it. Ragnor refused to be around him at all. Good times.
Anyway, another thing I need an explanation for is why it'll be so hard for Magnus to return to Earth. In 3x10 that posed No Problem, meaning one of two things. Either a) Asmodeus sent him back or b) he could easily travel back because he used that pentagram thingy. Honestly, the fact that Jonathan just as easily returns to Earth after his failed attempt on Lilith's life lets me favor b), which begs the question why Magnus used a regular portal instead of the pentagram thingy now. But even if a) is the case then that means Greater Demons apparently have no problem removing people from Edom and then I wonder if Magnus will have to beg Azazel or something to return him home lol, like a little kiddie asking for a lift. Or maybe, since he channelled his epic Edom!Power, maybe he can send himself back?? In any case I want some solid explanation on that.
Alec just collapsing made so much sense okay. I could feel the emptiness in my own chest, having gained and lost everything in a few short minutes, I can't even imagine how crushed Alec must be feeling.
Magnus's magic closing the rift is so epic in an incredibly emotional and intimate sense. Seeing his magic, part of him, when he's so far beyond all of their reach. It's incredible, it's touching and powerful and so so fragile. I'm amazed.
I can't believe they did this. I can't believe they put the literally last shot of this in the 3B Trailer. The audacity.
Okay but really important question, who's gonna feed Lorenzo now???

Bee Watches: Shadowhunters, Episode Three
I don’t know how much of a Thing this is going to be, given that these are now three episodes behind where I am in the series, but feel free to blacklist the “bee watches shadowhunters” tag if you want to skip...whatever these are.
we start off strong with Clary (rightfully) calling out the Warriors Three for leaving Simon alone in the van; Alec tries to snark about humans having no common sense but given he’s wearing a jacket with at least three buckles that don’t actually buckle anything, he needs to take a seat
the more frustrated Clary gets, the more Jace loves her
the dynamic here is so great: Alec is over everything, Izzy is realizing her fun evening out actually involves responsibility, and Jace is trying to be the moderating influence (which is clearly something he’s not used to)
on a more serious note, there’s a really cool tension being set up between Clary, who’s dealing with having to choose between saving her mom and her best friend, and Alec, who knows his duty and intends to stand by it no matter what -- it’s her Neutral Good against his Lawful Neutral, so they both want the same end result, but he’s willing to deal with a lot more collateral damage along the way
it’s also refreshing to see Clary being given information and context without much fuss; even Alec has accepted she’s one of them, if untrained, so no one is holding back information

When I said I was gonna keep myself from thinking and writing about a Malec World of Darkness/Vampire AU I LIED
So here we go: to not fuck too much with the meta plot of the actual game I think it would be interesting to make a parallel pre-clary/pre-second inquisition and a clary/post-second inquisition timeline.
Pre era :
The Camarilla/the clave has maintained influence over New York ever since the Battle of New York/Uprising (of Valentine/Sabbat) and things go like kindred politics go.
The Camarilla/the Clave seeks the help because of a rumored Baali (demon summoner) becomes active in New York downtown. Magnus Bane, a Banu Haqim sorcerer, is the best man for the job. Regardless of the price/boon he would ask it’s of capital importance that he investigates and if needed being threatened into doing so. Enters Alec Lightwood, Ventrue, enforcer of traditions and Sheriff. Isabelle Lightwood, Toreador, weapon master and harpy, she is the voice of NY’s kindred society. and of course Jace Wayland, Brujah and Scourge, the muscle of the Prince who is in charge to do the dirty work. Jace has proven himself numerous times to be an ally of the Camarilla/Clave even if his clan isn’t inclined of following him.

Of course the new Prince, Lorenzo Rey, isn’t planning on letting things slide as easily. The Inner Circle decides to intervene and sends a Justicar with their Archon to restore order and Camarilla influence over NY.

So like....in interest of not being a mopey bitch I did a quick-ass review of everything I loved about the finale. I may have forgotten stuff? so without further ado:
Meliorn and Jace. Jesus goddamn christ. That was so unexpected and funny. Also a very funny potential reference to the books, where Jace definitely gets it on in hell. And brings condoms. To hell.
That Simon and Clary scene in Edom. I complain a lot about them not knowing what to do with their platonic relationships, so I think it’s only fair to praise them for actually remembering them. It was a very sweet moment and somehow worked in literal hell.
Not killing off Meliorn!! He deserved to live and I’m so happy he did! He didn’t even betray anyone!! Also it was a really neat little note that he isn’t half seelie and couldn’t betray them because Jace can’t lie—I fully expected them to figure out his #treachery via that. Not really sure how that works since he’s the queen’s envoy and the queen wanted to destroy the shadow hunters (would she really let him go help them like that?) but maybe he just went AWOL who knows. Either way, won’t be a problem for him anymore.
I vote Meliorn for seelie king 2019
Magnus talking to Lilith was cool even if I didn’t like how they executed it. I’ve always imagined they had a lot of history together (he was under Asmodeus’ thrall after all, and Asmodeus and Lilith ARE married).
GOOEY LILITH!!! For some reason I really like gooey Lilith. And dragon Lilith!! The SFX the first time were beautiful so like…nice..
IZZY GETTING THE HEAVENLY FIRE. Oh my god they remembered she exists?? It was fucking awesome?? The effects were pretty fucking good?? Destroying edom didn’t work for me but god giving Izzy the power to do that was…good.
I literally cried at Clary asking Izzy to be her parabatai. It’s totally against the established canon but I literally don’t care. I wish we’d gotten to see that. It was unexpected but god I really loved it. I think it may have been my top moment in the finale.
Honestly no one commenting on the fact Jonathan has lizard hands or explaining why that was necessary or desirable might have been my favorite thing from his arc in the finale. Like he has crocodile hands now. Don’t shame him. Also roach cocoon Jonathan was…..pretty spectacular and it would probably be hypocritical of me not to stan gooey roach Jonathan. So we stan gooey roach Jonathan now.
I’m not sure how positive or happy this particular point is but I did like it so: the way they handled the Jonathan/Seelie queen thing compared to the books was so fascinating. Expect a full meta post.
The hair was nice. Thank you Luke. (Also it was vaguely explained! I’m shocked!)
Jonathan being known mostly for killing Max and then never actually ever doing it was prime comedy ngl. Live ur best life u lucky lil rascal.
Also tbh I was so glad the show ended before they could bring in TDA stuff. I like TDA overall but oh god I couldn’t bear to see what they’d do with it.
Jace supporting Clary through this episode was sweet. Other than obviously writing Jace to be as uncontroversial as possible in hopes to make the social media hate die down, I did actually like what they did with him as a character.
My malace shipping ass expected jace to be like “it’s okay you’re moving out!! Don’t worry I’ll start packing right now!” But it was a nice scene to include and I’m kind of surprised they thought of it lmao. Seeing Jace sad about it but putting on a brave face was kind of moving.
It was nice to see Raphael at the wedding and the Lorenzo thing was cute, obviously you know my stance on reyhill (yes good and more of it), it felt emotionally confused due to what else was going on but like…idk I guess they only had 2.5 hours.
I actually really liked the epilogue despite Some Things, Inquisitor Alec was obviously needed to keep up with the books, and the downward deputy thing was….interesting?? High warlock of Alicante?? IZZY AS HEAD OF INSTITUTE. MAIA AND TAKI’S!!!! That was so sweet. I’m so glad to finally see her happy and thriving.
Clary only painting in abstract to cope with her trauma or lack of memories was cliche but I still really liked it.
Jimon sparring!! Simon’s comic!!
An understated thing I really loved about that scene is that Jace hasn’t isolated himself or self-destructed after losing Clary, that there’s this implication that he poured himself into training Simon and work instead of going to pieces, for Clary and maybe even himself. That he did actually grow and learn how to use his support system—there’s an implication he and Simon actually have adult conversations and have helped each other cope with losing Clary. I mean it would have been nice to see some of that but you take what you can get right.

its a weird thing because i've always hated hp, even when i was a kid, but i'm kinda interested in discussing the whole houses thing? possibly because the choice between traits is so fucking random and absurd like idk it makes for funny character analysis. so in short let's go
but also, i'll warn u that my takes on this are usually considered kinda spicy. mostly because other ppl r wrong and interpret the characters terribly i go by the canon that the house ur sorted into represents what you value the most, not necessarily what you are (which is why hermione is gryffindor and not ravenclaw for example, and if i'm not mistaken so's neville? idk idc her worldbuilding is bad) so yeah
magnus is definitely hufflepuff for me, no argument about that. like yes he is very smart but i don't think that he values knowledge/intelligence above all else. wisdom maybe, but even then, magnus' character core is and has always been kindness and loyalty. he values kindness and mutual support and community and equality. it's indisputable that he's hufflepuff for me, not only in values but in personality and actions
i like slytherin alec, first because it fits his character arc. like big racist family who loves fascism and is very traditional sounds like slytherin, and at a very young age he'd be their golden boy tbh [EDIT: ive already gotten anon hate over this so please read these posts before freaking out over this part please and thank you] so like, makes sense. but even later alec i think fits slytherin, although in a different way. family above all else, tradition, and ambition? sounds like him. he's a political shark, he's very traditional, and he's loyal as fuck to his family. i'm not against hufflepuff alec per se but i wouldnt say, even by the end of the series, that alec values kindness/community/equality above all else, tbh
raphael is hufflepuff. again, loyalty, community, kindness. i could maybe kiiiiiindaaaaa see why ppl think he fits slytherin aesthetics with his power suits and shit but also raphael is the least ambitious person in like, this entire show lmao his happy ending is literally to become a priest (like i hate the whole mundane thing but u cant argue that that's an ambitious man lol). throughout the show his whole motivation was always protecting his people and his family, and he was shown to be kind and caring even to shadowhunters. and yes okay there was the heidi plotline but like a- it made no fucking sense anyway (both for his character and just plot-wise, like, she wasn't a daylighter, why would he be after her and not simon, what the fuck) so i simply ignore it, and b- even then it doesn't define him or his values. if ppl can see hufflepuff alec when he handed meliorn over to be tortured for basically no reason and was never shown to be particularly caring beyond the people closest to him, i can say hufflepuff raphael when he continuously extended his hand to people who literally betrayed, used and tortured him
maia is hufflepuff and look i know that this sounds like "all my faves are hufflepuffs" but really tho. endlessly loyal to her pack, wants to build a family, her whole thing was always about making the downworld better and making sure her family was okay, i don't see how community and equality aren't defining values for her. "oh muh muh muh she was willing to kill ppl" there was a war going on buddy. it doesn't mean that maia isn't kind and caring. also, again, she is fierce on her ideals, which happen to be family, equality, and community (both as in the pack and the downworld as a whole, see how hard she tried to mend vamp/wolf relationships). she's a hufflepuff
meliorn is a hard one. i think gryffindor or slytherin? tbh i don't think any of the houses really super fits them because again jk's worldbuilding makes no sense like the four personality traits are kind, smart, brave, and racist there are no other ones you sjw snowflake. and okay i know that i just called slytherin the racist house but that was a joke and i can see slytherin meliorn because loyalty and tradition. not really ambitious but not not ambitious either. tbh i could make points for meliorn in all houses, i think wisdom is definitely something they seek and care about, as is bravery (they're literally a knight), as is community, as is tradition. but also i could see them being like "hey sorting hat put me in slytherin i'm a 'mudblood' they're gonna be super pissed". and going there just to be defiant. but no actually i changed my mind completely, they're ravenclaw. i think wisdom and temperance are what they seek the most, because they want to be a good leader/asset for their people. which kinda circles back to hufflepuff but still.... wisdom. i think it suits them
simon is another hard one for opposite reasons like i don't think he truly fits any of the houses? like meliorn fits them all simon fits none. i know ppl always go with hufflepuff simon cuz they think hufflepuff is the dork house and simon is an anxious bean but fuck that noise, hufflepuff isn't the dork house, it's the house for those who believe in mutual aid and support and equality and that's literally canon, hufflepuff existed because it was the only hogwarts founder who believed that everyone had equal right to education. hufflepuff is a fierce house of sjws and people who want to change the world for the better and YES i am aware that for someone who thinks harry potter sucks i sure have strong opinions about it. but that's the thing like there are so many interesting places jk rowling could've gone and instead she chose to write the most superficial shit ever. anyway my point is that hufflepuff is not the dork house so i'm not gonna sort simon there just because he's a dork. but anyway i wouldnt say that he particularly values any of the house's traits. maybe ravenclaw for creativity? or gryffindor because clary is there and he's like "please sorting hat do me a solid" lol
which okay i guess leads me to clary. definitely gryffindor. bravery with a side of recklessness is definitely her thing. she is fierce and she is proud of it. no argument about that

camille is slytherin because duh and if we really wanna do a h*gwarts au for some reason, it adds some angsty juices as magnus once again falls in love with a slytherin and doesn't know how to open up and trust (once he meets alec, i mean)
luke is ravenclaw methinks. i guess could have been slytherin because character arc as shadowhunter but like... he's just a wise and caring figure. i could see hufflepuff but i think his thing is less equality/community and more family, but post-sh luke doesn't exactly fit "proud, ambitious, cunning" either. so yeah methinks ravenclaw. same for alaric i guess

All the stuff with this new sneak peek is bringing back frustrations over this repetitive behavior Jace has of betraying Alec’s trust.
Like, seriously. I touched upon it in my 1x09 recap/meta, but it bears repeating:
Honestly, Alec is totally in the right at this point [early in the episode] about the need to turn over the Mortal Cup. All Clary has is some vague notion that she can use the Cup to gain Jocelyn’s release. She has no plan for how that will happen, and she especially has no plan for how to prevent having to actually hand over the Cup to Valentine in order to get Jocelyn back. The Cup needs to be somewhere more secure, and Jace and Clary are 100% in the wrong on this point, and Jace is 100% betraying Alec by lying to him and scheming to keep him from handing over the Cup.
Where Alec is 100% in the wrong as well is going along with the Clave’s intention of sending Meliorn to the Silent Brothers. He should have offered to hand over the Cup then and there, rather than sitting on the knowledge that he knew where it was until he needed it to save Izzy.

I’m pretty much disappointed in all of them here. I’m disappointed in Clary and Jace and Izzy for deciding it’s better to mount some harebrained rescue for Meliorn. Honestly, Izzy’s rationale that the Clave would be even harsher if they got the Cup is stupid. They’re going to extremes because of panic regarding the Cup and they’d back off if they had the Cup, ergo the most rational thing to do is to hand the damn thing over.
I’m disappointed in Alec for being willing to consider letting Meliorn be tortured when handing over the Cup would take the Clave pressure off sufficiently that they probably wouldn’t be willing to risk war with the Downworld at the mere possibility of eking out more information. I’m disappointed in Magnus for betraying Alec when honestly, Jace and Izzy’s proposal is just absurd, their reasoning totally faulty, and he should know better. That said, given his mistrust of the Clave, his motivations are probably the most blameless.
Here’s the timeline of how things went down in 1x09:
Meliorn is taken into custody for questioning
Meliorn spills the tea about Clary having the Cup
Raj & Co start searching Clary’s room for the Cup
Jace talks Alec into letting Clary turn the Cup over
Jace IMMEDIATELY then tells Clary how to hide from the Clave to prevent that from happening
Clary asks if the Cup is secure, Jace says “it will be”
Jace and Izzy find out about Meliorn being taken to the City of Bones
Jace and Izzy convince Magnus to help them steal the Cup and necklace and go to liberate Meliorn
So, basically, JACE WAS PLOTTING TO STEAL THE CUP BEFORE HE KNEW MELIORN WAS GOING TO BE TORTURED.
He used Meliorn’s impending imprisonment to convince Magnus to help him steal Alec’s stele.
And then he used Alec’s obedience of the Clave’s orders vis a vis Meliorn as justification when they confronted each other in 1x11:
Alec: “You betrayed me. You lied to me. You attacked me when I was doing what we should have been doing together.”
Jace: “I didn’t betray you, Alec, I saved you from yourself! If you had taken Meliorn to be tortured, you would have that on your conscience for the rest of your life.”
Here, he’s conflating rescuing Meliorn with taking the cup/portal-shard necklace from the floor-safe and delivering them back to Clary (while keeping Clary out of reach of the Clave.)
They are completely separate issues, however.
Jace just, like, totally uses Meliorn as an excuse to skate on favoring Clary’s wish to use the Cup to get her mother back over Alec’s wish to turn to Cup over to the Clave, and in the process, makes it seem like this was all Alec’s fault.
Which is some really cynical gaslighting bullshit. I mean, really.
Yes, Alec was 100% in the wrong where Meliorn was concerned. As I said, the moment he found out the Clave was going to have Meliorn tortured, he should have handed over the Cup--before Jace even had a chance to steal it--because honoring Clary’s preference with regard to the Cup shouldn’t have been worth risking Meliorn’s life. The fact that Alec was willing to prioritize Clary’s preferences until it was IZZY’S life that was at risk is, indeed, highly problematic.
None of that, however, excuses the fact that Jace absolutely, beyond question, betrayed Alec, and that the Meliorn issue was merely conveniently coincidental for Jace’s purpose.
Don’t even get me going on Jace’s behavior from 2x05-2x08, when he wanted Clary to keep her runemaking ability secret. I can’t pin Clary keeping the Soul Sword’s ability secret on Jace, because that started with Cleophas, but in 2x08 Jace tries to discourage her from telling Alec, Izzy, and Magnus about it.
This behavior we’re seeing from Jace is not new, and the fact that Jace is telling Clary it’s for Alec’s own good now really doesn’t wash in light of the fact that he has lied and kept secrets from Alec before when it didn’t protect Alec at all.
I’ve commented before that Clary is much like Valentine--and, indeed, like Jocelyn--in that when she’s convinced she knows what’s best for everyone, nothing can deter her.
But Jace does the same thing as well. He learned it at Valentine’s knee. Maybe he should, you know, try UNlearning it, sometime.

ngl I may have defintely squealed at you calling me a favorite. and I really love your meta on this. I dont like the sh having any part of this being solved. I like your idea of luke and maia going to griffin and mending fences there before going after Heidi together. personally I'd want rapahel to come in to get both sides to cool down. having a warlock, or a high warlock as you said would be a best case scenario because I think that's one authority figure almost dw's listen to, kinda like adr

Oh, I would love if Lorenzo was the absolute worse but somehow he has to be a little charismatic. After all, he did promote himself well enough to be voted HW, so Lorenzo can’t be a complete moron. He can and is unbearable, though. And I would absolutely love to see an alternate Downworlder council with Lorenzo, Griffin, Maia, and I guess Meliorn, the only Seelie with lines besides the SQ.
But in any case, I saw the sneak peek now and none of what I said has any chance of happening. HOWEVER I am quite intrigued by what happens instead, so I count this as a win.

Name a ship that most represents your type of ship.
Isabelle and Raphael from Shadowhunters, hands down. (Beware: this turned into a long post that talks at once about all my current -and some not-so-current- otps).
-LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. “Why are you helping me?” “I don’t know.” – Shadowhunters
Half my dash must be tiring of hearing this, but I adore this trope. I love how it moves things along: the character is already in love -automatically, the relationship goes into Intense™ territory, you get swept into its groove, whether you like it or not (another reason why these ships, when they raise hate, the RAISE hate xD). Emori and John in The 100, Matt ~sensing Elektra across the room in Daredevil, Wes seeing Rebecca for the first time in HTGAWM, Derek and Jesse in TSCC (I want to start re-watching that show soon so I have that ship very present *sniffs*), Bruce and Selina in Gotham (and IIRC, every BatCat adaptation worth something has this in some form -it is a MUST).
With Rizzy, like with other ships (Caroline and Klaus in TVD, Bellamy and Raven in The 100), it might not be literally at first sight, but the result is the same: they might know of each other, but it is the first time that they really MEET, that something HUGE happens (Raphael feeding on Isabelle, Klaus offering Caroline his blood, Bellamy and Raven’s first time), when you can feel it. I love these cases too, because it offers the possibility of including a messy history/start/etc. (something that you can see at various points of this list lol), while simultaneously giving me the opportunity of experiencing the LAFS moment on present time, instead of in flashbacks (Elektra and Matt) or references (Harvey and Scottie in Suits).
-UNPLANNED, UNFORESEEN, UNWITTING. “But it doesn’t make any sense, it came out of nowhere!!” – the fandom lol
This is somewhat related to the LAFS point, and a criticism I’ve seen time and again about more than one of those ships, but in this case is multiplied by a hundred xD
And I wanted to make a separate point for this because, lbr -you rarely see this complaint (or at least not as generalized) when a PILOT ShowTP goes for LAFS. But that is something I love about these ships: it wasn’t in the original plan, there was no “build-up” that could have pointed at it, and it’s likely that the writing team behind it never had an inkling of the effects the ship could have on the writing. Some of my favourite cases are Bellamy and Raven, Caroline and Klaus, Bonnie and Kai, Emori and Murphy… these ships irremediably alter the foundations of their ‘verse, they re-shape the story. I love that something that came “out of nowhere” can have that effect. I love it.
This meta by @candyumbrella does a great job explaining this (far better than I could, and besides, this post is already getting longer than I expected ^^), and it even does it through Isabelle and Raphael. Her Ted and Tobin’s posts in general have been illuminating wrt how tv writers work, and in relation to this post, I’m more aware now of what makes me ship certain things, why something that on paper should be appealing to me falls flat, etc. I’d recommend them all, but beware because they will take hours of your life XD

Was there anyone who did not FREAK THE FUCK OUT with the “at the brink of war” line? Because I don’t believe them.
Look, it’s obvious. It’s cliché. I don’t care. I live for this trope. Allison and Scott from Teen Wolf was one my favourite instances of this trope (my bbys ;_;); it was one of the things that interested me of Allison/Derek too, as a crack ship; it was the whole premise of Still Star-Crossed and I’m not even gonna pretend I didn’t shamelessly enjoy every second. It was what instantly made Rosita/Waverly my OTP in Wynonna Earp, aka the most impossible out of all my rareships xD. Priya/Sierra and Tony/Victor in Dollhouse (I never know wtf to call the people on this show istg) had this element too, even if it was in a “us vs the world” sense, more than “we’re on different sides of a conflict way bigger than us and everything is stacked against us fuck” lol. Cassian and Jyn could go there too.
And obviously, Isabelle and Raphael as a ship have this written on its DNA, given how the ‘verse positions Shadowhunters and Downworlders. Outside the 219 scene (*_*), I think 213’s meeting in the alley managed to showcase it really well.
-EX-SOMETHING, EX-MAYBE, EX-ALMOST. “Well never be done with each other.” – Shadowhunters
I loooooove exes. Actual exes, proto exes, centuries-old exes. Something I love even more is “bitter exes that still have a special connection no one else gets or beats” (Camille and Magnus, Carlos and Kisa on FDTD, Elektra and Matt, Harvey and Scottie -and on the bitterest, most fucked up side, with ships like Katherine and Stefan on TVD or Derek and Kate on Teen Wolf. I even consider Rosita and Waverly could belong here, idc if it was one simple kiss okay xD). Obviously Isabelle and Raphael aren’t bitter, but they might get there, if I’m lucky! A girl can dream! (weird thing to say about an otp? I don’t care xD)
And one thing that is significant of these types of ships, and obviously of Raphabelle, is that, whether they’re together or not (hell, Izzy and Raphael have never really “dated”), narratively speaking, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make any difference. They’re still connected, one simple scene where they merely look at each other across a crowded room can resurrect the ship after years not even speaking to each other. Hell, with Caroline and Klaus it only took one phone call xD
-CAN’T QUIT EACH OTHER. “I’m just asking for a little taste.” – Shadowhunters
I guess this relates somewhat to the previous point, but I wanted to reference the addiction plot because for me it isn’t a bug, it’s a feature xD I’ve seen people say things like “I know they started out as problematic™ with the addiction, but now that they’re over that, they could be a gr10 ship!!”, and fuck that¸ tbh xD They’re a great ship because of the addiction storyline. It adds this messed up layer of wonder, of doubt, over the ship that I love. And obviously, there’s the appeal of “we’re bad for each other but we can’t stay apart!!” angst. My lizard brain likey. And it’s definitely a huge part of the appeal of Matt and Elektra, BatCat in general…
-SHARING SECRETS. “Nobody knows. Except for you.” – Shadowhunters
Things like Isabelle admitting she doesn’t feel strong, Raphael revealing the story about her sister, Bellamy telling Raven about how he felt about his mother’s death, Harvey confessing about Mike’s fraud to Scottie even if he knows it won’t make any difference, or only being capable of admitting to her voluntarily that he’s seeing a therapist… That kind of thing gives me so much joy :D
And lbr, the “except for YOU” part? HUGE draw, yup.

Any shipper would know what I’m talking about. That moment where Isabelle leaves mid-conversation with Alec and Meliorn in 214 to go to Raphael, or when they talk at the end of 210, or when they talk in 219. Bellamy and Raven in 413, when he’s telling her how much they need her and everyone and everything else disappears of the room (that’s the scene referenced above lol), or when A.L.I.E. posses Raven, and despite everyone else being one room away without even a door separating them, this feeling of intimacy falls over the scene. Caroline and Klaus looking at each other when he appears during the graduation event in 423, Root and Shaw in PoI. Literally everything about Rizzy in 209.

This has been one of my favourite tropes for-fucking-ever, guys. I think my first experience with it was Blade? Or Angel and Buffy? I’d say Blade. In any case: it changed my fucking life. The fact that Rizzy includes it is the cherry on top of this beautiful ship-cake.
On another note: blood transfusions totally count xD Furiosa and Max come to mind, for example.
There are other things that add to the ship for me: Raphael’s aceness (I project a lot onto him even without it so), the weird catholic/heretic themes xD, how beautiful they look together (I once was accused of “only” liking them because they looked hot together, which. LOL at the only, given this post and every other I’ve written about them, but also. OFC I like that they look hot together. That’s not only a good thing, it’s an IMPORTANT thing, among other reasons, because if the writers like your ship, they will look hot together xD).
And it’s not that if it doesn’t have any of those I won’t like a ship XD; in fact, some of my biggest OTPs lack some or even most of these traits (Gabrielle and Xena, Brigan and Fire in the Seven Kingdoms Trilogy, Clark and Lois in some versions), or that there aren’t other romantic tropes I love that don’t fit Rizzy (the Unholy Matrimony trope is one of my favourites, for example), but well. I know what I’m about xD

The reason I’m so pissed about the way season two is handling a lot of these things is because I feel like season 1 made a lot of progressive promises that season 2 is renegging on.
1. You are completely right about Izzy in Season One, which is why I’m so angry about how they use women’s bodies in Season Two. There is nothing wrong with showing sexual women, that’s not what I’m arguing. In my fic, I write Lydia and Clary as women who are very comfortable wanting, initiating and having sex. (I don’t write a lot of Isabelle, because I feel like I write a very weak Isabelle)
Clary’s comment about the way Izzy dresses is met with Jace’s immediate defense of “She’s very comfortable with her body” and we see Izzy in plenty of oufits that emphasize her breasts, butt and waist without having to sit through a pervo-camera running over all her features (but not in that first scene where she’s wearing that weird white latext thing, though at least before we see her dancing around in it the narrative emphasizes that she picked that outfit for herself). And yes, in that lingerie scene in Season 1, Isabelle is in control of the situation, she’s there for something she wants, and she and Meliorn have this healthy polyamorous open thing happening. She’s not being taken advantage of in the context of that scene.
Clary getting packed into Izzy’s tight clothes isn’t really sexualized either. When she walks out of the Institute looking like a dominatrix, Simon doesn’t do any gross predatory bullshit. He recognizes that her behavior is getting more erractic and gives her his shirt
But... Season Two doesn’t hold to that pattern. Izzy tries to weaponize her sexuality against Simon in order to get drugs, and the scene where she forces Raphael to bite her is written as a rape, which is never acknowledged.
Also... the purity trial wet tee shirt scene in the Iron Sisers makes me want to punch someone. They take their female leads and invent a bullshit reason (that is never followed up on) to display their bodies in a humilating and judgemental way. It’s disgusting. I am disgusted.
2. In the Year Of Our Lord 2017, where we are post Orange is the New Black, post Female Ghostbusters, and Wonder Woman is currently in theaters, I no longer have a goddamn shred of patience for writers and showrunners not thinking about the implications of their work when you take it that deep. When you are promoting the fuck out of your “strong female characters” you don’t get to rely on easy bullshit sexist tropes and get away with it.
Literally all they had to do in the wet tee shirt scene was put them in looser fitting clothes of a different color. White is the color of death, from a story standoint, red or black robes makes more sense. But no, there were female bodies to exploit.
The yin fen high didn’t have to be orgasmic. It could have been a relief like aloe vera on a sun burn or a cigarette after a long day, but some hungover lazy-bones in the writer’s room watched True Blood the night before and then got a chubby looking at Emeraude and wrote himself some spank bank and now we’re knee deep in boobs at the yin fen club. Not okay. Get spanked in the face, pervo.
Jace letting Clary purr for that vampire to in order to steal his bike? Not okay. Massively degrading to everyone involved.
Kaelie being displayed as a conquest in order to illuminate a legitimate story about Jace’s struggles that came off a little man-pain-y because they never let him engage with his emotions? She can’t even wear a bra? Really? Fuuucckkk Yooouuuuu
You gave a girl first billing and a sword and she literally hasn’t talked about anything but boys for two years, while everyone ignores that she is a terrible ally to the marginalized people the show is supposed to be about (remember when Clary forgot about the Holocaust?) and then celebrates her for being the most open minded person in the world... when she’s never even the most open minded person in any given scene? Do better.
The fact that basic little shit like this can’t hold up to me watching this as woman who thinks she’s a person is the whole problem. It’s just too goddamn late to keep going back to these storylines and not thinking about the implications. Especially when you can tell by the advertisements that they are selling this to women under 20.
They 100% owe it to us to do better on their representation of women. They don’t owe us certain plot points, they don’t owe us more time for this character or that character, they don’t owe us a certain degree of adherence to, or deviation from the books, but they non-negotiably owe us fully fleshed out female characters who aren’t sexually exploited.
