Text Overlay-Settings Tutorial
Below is how I did my text overlays for this gif set, requested by @arachnidfellow. Tutorial made in Photoshop CC 2021 but works on all Photoshop versions. 😊
1. I start by setting the main blend mode for the layer to Exclusion
2. I put on a normal 100% color overlay, this is the main color you want your text to be.
3. This is the trickier part and is never 100% the same and requires experimentation depending on the scene and text.
I put on a gradient overlay. The color the text gets is from the color overly, so it doesn’t quite matter the color of the gradient. If I am dealing with busier scenes, I will go with a high contrast gradient overlay, which is what I did in this set. I used the black and white one. For not as much contrast, you can pick a duller gradient with colors that are flatter/closer together.
For each scene, I adjusted the opacity to different levels. The more opacity, the more the gradient comes through and gives contrast. The less opacity, the less contrast. I put it lower on darker scenes or ones that are not as busy.
Sometimes I play with the reverse button or angle, as well as the scale. This is the setting I used on that specific orange gif but each scene is different. I think this is probably the highest opacity I use on the gradient, I usually make it lower.
