I just saw your tags on the Chuck Tingle post about Camp Damascus changing you. WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT THIS BOOK. I haven't had anyone to talk to about this book and it's just been in my brain for the last few months.

I need to read it again, absolutely, but I literally could not put it down. It was like I was twelve in my public library again, reading the day away because I was so engrossed by the story that nothing else mattered.

The review that I left was called "Comfort in Terror" and this is what it said:

No people are a monolith - but there is strength and comfort in shared experience. I don’t think I’ve read the work of someone who understands that as well as Chuck Tingle. Camp Damascus begins in dread and hopelessness. That dread never goes away, but the hopelessness does. The possibility for a better future grows and grows on every page of this book. The wrongness that haunts the lead character and the other “troubled” members or former members of her original home cult is like an itch under the skin in more ways than one. This work is dark and beautiful and powerful and I feel better for having read it.

Hopeful horror was something so new for me, but also spoke to me (and the terrified, closeted queer teen and young adult that I used to be) in an incredibly special way.

21. Can you accurately predict how long your fics are going to be? If you can, what's your secret?

I wouldn't say I'm ever 100% accurate, but I can usually guess the ball-park. I know accurately how many chapters I'm going to write if it's a long fic 'cause I usually have a rough outline for what I want to happen and how long it'll take. But with word counts, I have been known to predict under 4k and ending up with 24k, so. Yeah. But most of the time, if I think it's going to be 3k, it'll be around that mark. Shorter things are easier to predict for me, it's the longer things I struggle with. They have a mind of their own, lol.

23. Dialogue or description? Why is the other one so hard?

Description is usually easier for me. I'm the worst for rambling though, once I start describing something, I can't stop, lol. I usually end up having to delete half of it, but at least it flows for me. With Dialogue, it's a little harder. I think the biggest obstacle i've found, particularly with fanfic, is getting out of using my Scottish/British lingo. Since the characters I write are American, I find it difficult sometimes to get that voice and not weave in too many of my own phrases in case they aren't universal. I've had many a beta reader tell me "we wouldn't say that over here" or "I know what you're trying to say, but we'd say it like this," so it's all about trying to work around that hurdle. I mean, that's what beta readers are here to help with, I guess, but it would be nice to not stumble over it so much.

32. Do you have a word/expression that you always use in your writing?

There's probably quite a few I could list off, and I don't doubt that I use them way too often, lol. Off the top of my head, I'd say "he made a sound he'll be embarrassed about later", "purr", "snarl/growl" and "thick, lickable neck" will be in pretty much every single one of my fics, or at least, 99% of them, lmao.

39. Wildest AU scenario you have written?

My fic Treasure is Peter as a pirate and Stiles as a wyvern, so I guess it could fit into the wild category. It might actually be my favourite thing I've ever written too. I just had so much fun with it and it's the kind of thing I LOVE to read, so it definitely holds a top spot.

“If even Greenberg’s landed someone, you can tell the good ones are gonna be gone by the time everyone else is ready to settle down,” Stiles jokes. “Better figure your shit out now, Stilinski.” “Yeah. I really need a plan. One of those pact things. My Best Friend’s Wedding style. Marriage by age 30, you know what I mean?” He’s lost Erica to her phone again. “Never seen it,” she says, bored. Scott nods sagely. He knows the film well—it was a favorite of Stiles’s mom, and they both sat through at least a dozen rewatches. "The problem for me is," Stiles continues, "who would I even do it with?” “Isaac’s available,” Erica says. “Ew." “What? Whatever you're saying, fuck off,” Isaac calls from the kitchen, his voice only loud for Stiles’s benefit. Stiles snickers. When he glances over, he finds Peter’s eyes slit open. Watchful. “Okay then, Peter, it’s you and me, bud,” he jokes. “Fine,” Peter replies at once. Stiles cocks his head, kind of incredulous. And maybe, because this is Peter, just a tiny bit suspicious too. “That was fast. No objections to walking me down the aisle, creeperwolf?” “Why not?” Peter gives a lazy shrug, like he really could not care less about this stupid joke. He lays his head back down and closes his eyes, going right back to feigning his little nap. “See you in eight years.”

(It started much earlier for Peter, and now he has the pleasure of watching Stiles grow into his own in much the same way. Of course, he hadn't expected to end up fixating on the boy quite so much, but then, what's life without a few surprises?)

talk shop tuesday: you're wonderfully prolific. Is there anything you do to keep yourself motivated or to keep chipping away at your WIPs? Asking for a friend who is laying on the floor as their WIPs taunt them from across the room.

I have…many a WIP that haunts me. I completely understand where you’re coming from.

Setting goals has helped me. I’m a really quantitative person at heart. So watching number go up is motivating to me 😂

But aside from that I’m never only working on one project at a time. Even when I’m doing very focused writing (like for an event with a particular deadline) I will work on something on the side, too. This helps in a few different ways. The biggest is that whenever I’m feeling stuck, I will work on a different project, which keeps me motivated because I still feel like I’m making progress even if it’s not the progress I wanted. The diversity of pairing/setting/tone/mood/fandom also helps! Especially if it’s a character reaction or perspective that has me feeling stuck. Sometimes doing something so different helps knock something loose on the other project, or helps me contextualize it.

This has pitfalls! Sometimes I will work on too many projects at once and then I don’t feel like I’m making any true progress, or it’s easy to lose passion or focus. So it’s definitely a balance!

But overall the most motivating thing to me is being part of the fandom itself. Talking to other authors, posting whenever I have a random idea, things like that. Because even when I’m struggling and don’t feel like I can write or everything is coming out wrong or what have you, I’m not in it alone, and that means everything to me.

First of all, so sorry for taking so long to reply to this. We had totally intended to reply right away but then everything got a way from us and here we are.

The mod team are currently working on the prompts and planning something special for the 10th (!!!) anniversary of Steter Week. We're planning to post the prompts in early May, so hopefully that will still be plenty time for everyone.
