Is it just me or does shin hati lacks personality?
i think it’s pretty obvious i don’t think of Shin as lacking in personality. i love what i’ve seen of her so far - think Ivanna is absolutely killing it with her performance so far, playing this mixture of intensity and homegrown Jedi calm, of a girl who is very alone and also trying to hold herself away from caring about anyone she might have to kill. i mean, i don’t know why you think she has no personality (i’d be interested in hearing your reasons) but to me she’s a fantastic character. if you know me you know that it takes A LOT for me to write fic for a character or a ship. so if wolfwren has moved me, i can pretty much guarantee i don’t sell out for looks with no personality.
but let me actually explain why i like Shin
firstly, she’s had very little screen time, to the extent i’ve probably got gifs of every frame of her so far on my blog. meanwhile Sabine has all of Rebels, Ahsoka has The Clone Wars, and Huyang is, frankly, a very typical example of a speaking droid. reminds me of c3po (i think he’s great, just not original characterisation). and they’ve all had more screen time in these four eps than Shin, who nonetheless has, in my opinion, demonstrated tremendous presence in every single scene she’s appeared in.
how she shows up on Lothal, stands there and says in her maddeningly calm tone, “we’ve been looking for this.” it’s just… so tongue-in-cheek, and Shin could so easily have sic’d the droid on Sabine and made her escape, could have smacked her against a wall with the Force and strolled away. but she chooses to stay. and the way she dances around Sabine’s blows… grabs the hilt of her saber to manipulate her in the fight, putty in her hands. flips her over her shoulder and plays plays plays with her… the grace and the wildness and the strange fascination of their fight. god she’s just!! so intriguing.
i think people pay too little attention to how much characterisation there is in a fight scene. we have Sabine fighting with a style that’s very much a mesh of form 1 and form 3. it’s defensive, it has hints of Ahsoka in it, her own modified and slightly more useful variation of Soresu (form 3) and then we have Shin. i need to examine her moves more closely to tell what forms (i think definitely forms plural) she’s drawing from - not much makashi, which makes sense since Baylan is Jedi-trained. her movements remind me of Maul’s style in The Phantom Menace, but there’s an element to her style that feels more… joyful, freeform, free verse.
she spins and pirouettes and barely avoids the cut of Sabine’s lightsaber. there’s relish in those movements. she can clearly block blaster bolts magnificently, has the athletic and acrobatic ability for ataru (the form yoda favours, and anakin to an extent). she’s a muddle of contradictions. silent so often but when she fights, when she flies that fighter…she’s golden.
and wry, too. watch for those slight smiles. the “you almost got them” and her hop-skip in the forest on Seatos, the “hello there” energy reminding me so much of Obi-Wan. and then her obvious terror when the Inquisitor falls, spewing green smoke. at the time i thought she was afraid for herself, of Ahsoka, but she was really afraid for Baylan. he’s trying to be a Jedi Master to her - there’s distance in their relationship, and GOD you can see her longing for contact, for touch, for something she can push and feel pushing back.
i think it’s why she antagonizes Morgan, why she waits to duel Sabine. she wants to… touch something and not just in a physical sense but in terms of connection. the light is so much about embracing life and i think of Shin trapped in the middle of that, not good or evil, light or dark, but caught in a terrible silence. her care and her fire is contained but it burns. especially when she fights, when she loses her temper “you have no power”, choking Sabine at the end, and that’s just the fire that creeps out under the door! beware the smoke.
the moments of fear, of guarded concern, of delight and fascination, anger and joy. i mean!! she’s a girl of few words, but when she speaks she SPEAKS. and when she doesn’t you can see so much going on in her body language, her face, her eyes, her actions. i think both of her fight scenes are beautiful examples of character through conflict.
i always use duels and fights for character-building. a fight is boring with nothing behind it - and with Shin we see, at first, fascination. wanting to prove herself, to show she’s the better padawan, but she also… i think she could have killed Sabine very easily. i would have run from Ahsoka too, but she honestly could have murdered Sabine right there. i love how they’re creating this sense that Shin is both… disturbed and intrigued by Sabine in episode 4. angry and also… holding her by the wrist, standing between her and Morgan.
listen, i am going to ship wolfwren whether or not my cows come home, but i really don’t bother with characters who aren’t interesting. so, yeah, i think Shin has plenty of personality! i love what star wars has been doing with the girls who have red(ish) sabers lately. i adore Reva, i am regularly insane about Trilla Suduri, and i think Shin is very different from them but no less fascinating! i’m loving the tentative line she’s walking between dangerous and vulnerable.
and, yeah, i think they should kiss.

Rebels Rewatch: “Vision of Hope“
Plot threads coming together as we approach the home stretch and season finale arc, lets explore some sewers today!
Kanan has deemed it safe enough to enlist help training Ezra again.  Fortunately this time they are solidly on the ground and taking precautions. XD
This exercise is a little bit similar to the one Anakin put Ahsoka through in Trials of the Jedi.  Only, you know, it has an actual achievable goal and endpoint (redirecting a blaster bolt into the target helmet) and Kanan doesn’t force Ezra to keep getting knocked unconscious over and over again.
Nice detail in Ezra sensing bolts coming and ducking, moving before they even remotely reach him.
Tumblr media
Please help him, he’s so tired.
Seeing that Ezra’s distracted, Kanan calls a brief halt.  I do wonder if Ezra’s own anticipation of catching Gall Trayvis’s broadcast, while he’s open to the Force and letting it help him deflect and dodge shots, is what triggered his vision.
The boy does tend to accident his way into Force breakthroughs lol.
Tumblr media
This full-body eyeroll is such a typical teenager thing.
The “Shenanigans” leitmotif comes in here, in playful synths.  Then the Force ring sound effects starts and it crashes to a halt with a note of cymbal percussion.  The strings take over with high frantic ascending trills that drop away into the full-on soundscape of Force noises, only a strained trumpet bleeting out halting notes of Ezra’s theme.
There’s a pulsing heartbeat sound underneath everything too.  Also love the wavering effect on the sides of the screen to indicate the vision.
The amazement when Kanan tells Ezra he deflected every single shot into the helmet, aww.
Tumblr media
He looks so proud.
You know in hindsight it’s really not surprising that Kanan assumed Ezra had graduated to tracking through the Force in “Legacy”, given how often the kid had already surprised him. XD
Tumblr media
His face.  *sobs*
I haven’t been commenting on it much but pay attention to whenever the titlecard pops up without its normal bombastic fanfare.  Usually a sign that things are serious.  I remember we went a solid streak of like five episodes in Season Four without a single fanfare and it was STRESSFUL.
Kanan brings up the very likely possibility that Ezra’s desires are coloring his vision, making him see what he wants to see out of it, which again goes to show why the Jedi teach discipline and clarity of mind when tapping into the Force.  You bring your own emotions and junk into the connection with you and they can trick you even more than the already cryptic and vague visions can.  “Your focus determines your reality.”
We’ll revisit this concept later in the series.
Zeb going for a headsmack while Sabine chooses a shoulder bump.  Sabine has this adorable devilish grin right before she lays it on him.  It turns softer and more playful as she passes.
Tumblr media
Ezra smacks Zeb back as he runs into the Ghost, cute.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The way Ezra twirls his helmet before sitting down, lovely little character touches like this make the animation feel more natural and immersive and realistic.
Hngh, Ezra’s eagerness in these early scenes hurts.
Lol, Sabine leans in when Ezra mentions the mural, the artist in her is intrigued.  And without missing a beat she pulls up the correct schematic.
Tumblr media
This is the biased shipper in me but I’m loving their comfortable proximity, you can see Sabine slip out of her seat in the booth and kneel or crouch next to Ezra who’s on the stool.
Kanan once again warning Ezra not to put too much stock in his vision and Hera raising an eyebrow like, “Mais, c’est quoi?”
Tumblr media
“He had a what now?”
Hi Zare!
Zare is exiting state left into his own spinoff adventure lol.  (Really gotta get myself a copy of his books.)
Ezra’s eyes are really pretty this episode.
The crew talking about Ezra’s tragic backstory. :(
That old Ralph McQuarrie concept art put to use in lovely fashion.
Tumblr media
*has a plan*
Tumblr media
*DOUBT.jpeg*
And Chopper straight up murdered his first other droid lol.  And also very nearly takes Kanan’s head off.
The sass on this droid. XD
Always found it cute how Ezra doesn’t get indignant or offended by Sabine implying he smells like the sewers but glees up like it’s the most exciting thing in the world that she’s paid enough attention to him to tell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Kanan’s like, “Okay, can you not be embarrassing about your obvious crush for like two seconds?”
Hi Trayvis, you dirty lying snake. :)
Tumblr media
This shot of Ezra and Kanan igniting their lightsabers together for the first time is pretty sweet.
“Padawan Jabba.”  Snrk, love that Kallus remembered that.
Oooooh lookit the way Zeb’s bo-staff lights up the smoke!
Hera’s blaster has a very unique sound that I like.
The “Shenanigans” cue comes back but it is a lot less fun and upbeat.  Some of the chords sound transposed to minor key.
Trayvis starting pinging me the moment we saw him in person, honestly, just something about him and the way he talked was way too slimy but his hesitance to actually escape here definitely got me suspicious.
Good thing Kanan was reviewing blaster bolt deflection earlier lol.
Tumblr media
SNAAAAAAAAKE.
NO ONE LIKES YOU. >:(
Tumblr media
“How will you find us?”  “I can smell you, remember?” <3333333
Love to see Sabine initiating the banter for once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Hera is like, “THAT’S CUTE GUYS BUT WE GOTTA GO.”
Trayvis digging for leads to other Rebel factions like the lying rat he is. >:(
Aaaaaand this is why Hera doesn’t tell the others anything, Ezra’s so eager to believe Trayvis is an ally that he’s just talking openly in front of him.  Disaster averted only because Ezra thinks the Ghost crew is literally all there is.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The consistent wafts of air from the fan that blow Ezra’s hair.
The sharp-eyed can tell that Hera adjusts something on her blaster moments before handing it to Trayvis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
EVERY SINGLE SHOT OF THE BETRAYED LOOK ON EZRA’S FACE HURTS ME PHYSICALLY AND PERSONALLY.
Tumblr media
Bbbbyyyyyyyyyy. :((((((((((((
Hera’s furious Mama Bear haymaker to Trayvis’s face is... satisfying.
I love the sound Ezra’s saber makes when it’s turned on, it sound so unique to normal lightsaber ignitions.
And then there’s one last distorted iteration of the “Shenanigans” cue and Ezra’s death glare game continues to be on point.
Tumblr media
Hera’s turn to comfort Ezra this time, though Kanan’s flat, “I saw this bratty kid who constantly caused me trouble.” gets a chuckle out of him first.
“Shenanigans“ comes back, properly in the woodwinds section and major key again to close us out.
Oof.  This episode isn’t one I particularly rewatch that often, since it’s kind of a bummer.  Our potential ally turns out to be a fraud and a spy, all the work the crew has done only seeming to put bigger and bigger targets on their backs.  But this is a franchise about hope, about enduring until the dawn breaks, so our heroes escape to lick their wounds, regroup, encourage each other, and try again.
And next episode they make some big splashes.  Boy oh boy. :)

Hi Lumi! Question for you: do you consider Ahsoka to be a Jedi? I'm somewhat conflicted, because she herself famously says 'I am no Jedi', but she still follows the Jedi teachings, and others look to her as an authority on Jedi teachings. Her Mandalorian episode is even called The Jedi, though admittedly that could be from Din's perspective. But she doesn't help to raise the Temple on Lothal in Rebels, saying it's better left for Kanan and Ezra and that she left the Jedi Order, but we know that she eventually wanted to make her way back. There seems to be a lot of evidence for both opinions, so I was wondering your perspective. Have a good day!
Hi! I think, if you absolutely forced me to give an answer, I would say, no, Ahsoka is not a Jedi. Certainly not before Malachor, she doesn't consider herself a Jedi!  While she is very much a light side user, she's not wholly following Jedi teachings--she has spent too long in denial over the truth about Anakin, she’s not facing her emotions about it or letting them go. The Lothal Temple has to smack her in the face with the truth about him, and while she’s not a Jedi, she’s Jedi-adjacent and in tune with Jedi things, so the Jedi Temple there reaches out to her, the Force shows her this truth she’s been denying for so long. It shows her her guilt, “Where were you when I needed you?  You abandoned me!  You failed me!  Do you know what I’ve become?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Ahsoka’s guilt and pain made manifest, the pain she’s been carrying around since 19 BBY, and hasn’t truly faced it.  It upsets her so much, that she screams, “No!” and whirls around with her lightsaber ignited to lash out at the images haunting her. This and her willingness to seek revenge for Anakin Skywalker are what lead her to say, “I am no Jedi.”  It’s not a rejection of the Jedi, it’s her saying that she cannot uphold those ideals of the Jedi, so she’s not one. But it’s also complicated in that she had the choice stolen from her, she can’t be a Jedi, because the Jedi aren’t around for her to go back to.  She says “not yet” when Yoda asks if she did her duty as a Jedi.  She looks hopeful when the war is ending and it’s right on the heels of that conversation with Yoda.  She says “lost faith in us” when being unfair with Obi-Wan. She wanted to go back.  But then that chance to set things right was stolen from her, ripped away from her by Anakin and Sidious, so she’s never gone back, because she doesn’t feel she can. She doesn’t let go of the pain and guilt she holds for what happened with Anakin. But once she faces him again, I think that’s where Ahsoka might start on her path back to the Jedi, because that’s when she’s forced to face himself and her own feelings about him.  She accepts that this is who he is, this is what he chose, this is Anakin Skywalker who became Darth Vader. She accepts that she couldn’t save him. “You can’t save your Master.  And I can’t save mine.” If Ahsoka has found her way back to being a Jedi--and I’m not sure she has, I think perhaps with Luke being there, she’s stepped aside because the galaxy  no longer needs her to be a Jedi and the Jedi she wanted to be isn’t possible anymore, because all of the Jedi she knew are dead, there’s no one to go back to, not in the way that she wanted--it’s only after Malachor. But I don’t think she’s (by the time of The Mandalorian) considering herself not a Jedi in the same way, either.  She certainly doesn’t make as much of a fuss about it with Din assuming she’s a Jedi, but neither is she willing to teach Grogu. Whether that’s because she doesn’t consider herself a Jedi or because she knows that she can’t do it, not with how badly scarred she was from Anakin’s fall to attachments, that she’ll never be able to look at Grogu for Grogu’s sake, instead of seeing Anakin looming over him, or because she just thinks Luke is meant for this, it’s hard to say. If you press me on it, I’ll say, no, Ahsoka’s not a Jedi.  She was raised as a Jedi, she is who they helped her grow into being, but the Jedi Order isn’t around for her to go back to, whatever Luke builds from here on out, it’s not her path as a Jedi.  Her path as a Jedi died when Anakin marched into the Temple, even if Yoda’s vision on Malachor or his Force Ghost would say that she was welcome back any time, I think without her Jedi Order to go back to, she may not ever consider herself a Jedi again, not in the way where she states it with conviction.  It’s not a rejection of the Jedi Order, it’s that her life went in another direction because of what happened in the galaxy.

if you could sort anakin, obi wan, leia and luke into hogwarts houses, which would you choose for them and why?
ooooo! Good question!  Let me first preface this by saying my knowledge/interpretation of these characters comes strictly from the movies and live action series.  I’ve never read any of the novelizations (except for the Aftermath series) and I’ve never seen any of the animated series.  So with that out of the way, onto the sorting….
Let’s get the easiest ones out of the way first:
Leia: hands down a Gryffindor.  She’s feisty, she’s a fighter, she’s got the sass, and she doesn’t need anyone to help her out of any situation.
Anakin: Slytherin.  I know, I know…that seems like the obvious choice.  But! Family?? Is incredibly important to him.  Dude straight up slaughtered a tribe of Tuscan raiders after what they did to his mom.  And his love for Padme and his children, his desire to keep them all safe, was twisted by the emperor and what drove him to the dark side.  Slytherins are loyal and tend to put  family, or those they care about, above all else.
Ok, now for the harder two….
Obi-Wan: my first instinct, based off of episodes 1-3, is he’s a Ravenclaw.  He was the Sassmaster during Anakin’s training, so he’s definitely got the wit.  And he constantly reminded Anakin to think before acting on impulse.  However, during the Obi-Wan series timeline, I feel like he’s more of a Slytherin á la Horace Slughorn.  He’s hiding from the empire, trying to keep a low profile, and is so reluctant to use his powers, he’s lost some of his ability.  It all smacks of Slytherin self-preservation.  Even when Bail comes to ask him for help getting Leia back, Obi-Wan flat out refuses, saying he has to protect Luke.  But the truth is he’s afraid of compromising himself and afraid of facing his past failures, much like Slughorn in book 6.  He does show loyalty to Padme in his mission to look after Luke, and eventually to Bail by going to rescue Leia.
Luke: he…would definitely be a hatstall.  my first reaction for him, based on episodes 4-6, is he’s a Hufflepuff.  He’s loyal to Han and Leia and the rebellion.  He wants to help and sees the good still in Vader, and he just radiates this hopeful zeal that you don’t see anywhere else.  Then, during The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett timelines, he feels more like a Ravenclaw, using the wisdom gained from the Force to train new Jedi.  However, during the final trilogy, I see him more as a Slytherin or maybe a burned Hufflepuff.  He’s isolated himself on that island, hiding from his past mistakes, just like his former master Obi-Wan.  It’s again another act of self-preservation.  But he does show loyalty in the end by helping the rebels escape. Though it is debatable if Rey had not shown up to challenge him, whether or not he would have come to help.
So yeah, I know I tend to show a preference for sneks, but that’s probably because I’m a hatstall Ravenclaw/Slytherin who chose the snake house as home ;). thanks for the ask!

Whumpcember 2022 Day. 19 ELECTRICITY
Featuring Ben Solo witnessing the showdown in RotJ. And has a lot to think about.
*this is a multichap. it was meant to be a oneshot but it got away from me lol so now it’s at least a 3-4 chap story*
AO3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/43796083/chapters/110131357
Enjoy!
```
Ben Solo had seen the lingering scars on his uncle’s arms, and seen that they trailed up to peek out of his clothes around his neck.
He knew they had come from the Emperor, who used a special type of torture to kill Luke.
But still. He wondered.
Which is why he found himself in the meditation room, alone, cross legged and contemplating.
He was still upset with his uncle - and his parents - for keeping the secret that his grandfather was Darth Vader from him. He had immediately sought out Luke for answers, and remembered the resigned expression on the Jedi’s face.
Then the voice started, telling him how great Vader was, how powerful he was - and also how he had failed to completely serve the darkside by giving into sentiment.
The voice said that Ben could do what Vader could not, and yet…
He hesitated.
He never knew Vader, had never met the Force-Ghost he could now, apparently, appear as.
Anakin only ever spoke to Luke, and Ben got the feeling that even if his mother had come to terms with her biological parentage, she was still adamant that Anakin didn’t interact with her son.
Which irked him. Yes, his mother had been tortured by her own father but…
The voice had said that sometimes, sacrifices had to be made on the path of the darkside. And it sounded like Vader had given up everyone on his.
Ben longed to see what had made Vader choose to give up all that power, that control . He had everything. Second only to the Emperor, in command of the Imperial forces…
But he still threw that all away for Ben’s uncle - Vader’s own son.
Why?
A breeze rustled his hair, and Ben frowned.
He was inside, with no windows open.
Where had that come from?
Ben opened his eyes, then sucked in a sharp breath.
He was surrounded by a huge forest, in front of what looked like an Imperial base.
A well-maintained Imperial base.
Scrambling to his feet, Ben looked around, before a shape from the sky emerged.
Slowly, an imperial shuttle came in for a landing, wings closing in their upwards position. The entrance lowered, steam billowing out, and Ben gapped as the huge, imposing figure of Darth Vader disembarked, pace brisk - and not noticing Ben.
Curious, the Jedi took a few steps forward, paused, then sprinted after Vader. This must be a vision, Ben excitedly thought. The Force is showing me how great Vader was before he threw it all away!
Vader entered the base, and the vision momentarily blurred, before Ben then found himself on a slim hallway, overlooking the Endor moon forest, a railing running along the viewing deck. The turbolift smoothly slides open, and Vader confidently walks out, stooping a bit to fit his massive form through the door.
On the opposite side of the viewing deck, a door opened with a loud hiss and an officer hurriedly approaches Vader, with three stormtroopers and…Luke Skywalker, hands bound in front of him with binders.
This is the rebel that surrendered to us,” the officer reported. “Although he denies it, I believe there may be more of them,” Ben watched with fascination as Vader and Luke stared at each other. “And I request permission to conduct a further search of the area. He was armed only with this.” the officer nearly smacked Luke’s lightsaber into Vader’s hand in his haste, but Vader was quick to hold the saber in a firm grip.
“Good work, commander,” The Sith Lord’s mask was still on Luke, but seemed to reluctantly turn away to the officer. “Leave us. Conduct your search, and bring his companions to me.”
Ben glanced at his uncle, slightly marveling at his calm, collected expression. Ben could never master the art of staying calm , but Luke had clearly mastered it years ago.
“Yes my lord.” the officer turned and left, the stormtroopers following behind, as Vader and Luke both began walking, slowly keeping pace with each other.
“The Emperor has been expecting you.” Vader simply said.
“I know, father.”
“So,” Vader’s mask turned back to Luke, and Ben could feel a thrum of pleasure from the Sith Lord. “You have accepted the truth.”
“I’ve accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father,” Luke answered, head tilting to look at Vader as the behemoth suddenly moved in front of Luke, pointing at his son with the Jedi’s lightsaber.
“That name,” Vader slightly waved the saber from side to side. “No longer has any meaning for me.”
Ben crossed his arms, watching with interest. If Anakin Skywalker truly had no meaning, then why…?
“It is the name of your true self,” Luke was persistent. “You’ve only forgotten. I know there is good in you. The emperor hasn’t driven it from you fully.” Luke turned away, walking slowly to the railing. “That was why you couldn’t destroy me,” the blonde man rested his cuffed hands on the railing, staring out at the forest. “That’s why you won’t bring me to your emperor now.”
Ben blinked, frowning slightly as he recalled the story when his uncle first faced off against Vader in a duel - Bespin.
Vader had every opportunity to kill Luke when he saw he wouldn’t give in…but he didn’t.
The Sith Lord was now looking at Luke’s lightsaber, and ignited it, the green blade illuminating off his black armor.
“I see you have constructed a new lightsaber,” Vader twisted the hilt around in his gloved hands, carefully mapping out its design. “Your skills are complete.” Vader disengaged the saber before turning away from Luke, no longer looking at him. “Indeed you are powerful as the emperor has foreseen.”
Luke was now facing Vader, staring intently into the back of his mask.
“Come with me.”
Ben took a few steps forward, watching the scene carefully. He sensed that - just maybe - there was more to this story than he had originally been told - by his parents, uncle, and the voice.
There was a pause as Vader stared into the wall.
“Obi-wan once thought as you do.” Ben raised an eyebrow. Was his mind playing tricks on him, or did Vader sound…reminiscing? About his old master?
The Sith turned around, facing Luke, voice now rising; “You don’t know the power of the darkside,” Ben had to agree - nobody did, and his uncle sure didn’t since he disregarded what power could come from it.
“I must obey my master,” Vader’s voice, though vocoded, seemed to soften as he looked at his son. Luke’s expression became grim, and he shook his head slightly.
“I will not turn, and you’ll be forced to kill me.”
A heavy silence fell between them, making Ben twitch, uncomfortable at the tension hanging in their air as father and son stared at each other.
“If that is your destiny.” Vader sounded even more monotonous than usual.
Luke stepped forward, coming closer and closer to Vader with every movement.
“Search your feelings, father. You can’t do this,” Luke once more slowly shook his head as he stared almost pleadingly at Vader, voice rising up an octave as desperation began to set in. “I feel the conflict within you let go of your hate!”
Ben bit his lip, staring not at Vader now, but at the slow devastation taking ahold of his uncle. He had never bothered to think about his uncle’s perspective on this…he had only ever obsessed over Vader.
But now seeing just how adamant Luke had been about good still being in Vader, and how despondent he was becoming as Vader kept avoiding and dismissing him, Ben felt an uncomfortable emotion. Or maybe it was a combination of them?
It was too jumbled for him to make sense of it.
“It is…too late, for me, son.” Vader’s voice was soft once more, but he pointedly gestured with his right hand, and another door hissed open, allowing two stormtroopers to enter.
Like Ben, Vader was once more staring at Luke’s anguished face.
“The Emperor will show you the true nature of the Force.” Ben shivered as the words took on a menacing tone, and the troopers stood at attention behind Luke. “He is your master now.”
Ben’s uncle stared up into Vader’s mask, expressionless now, though Ben saw the small cracks showcasing just how hard Luke was trying to contain his despair and heartbreak.
The blonde man gave a tiny, resigned nod and, without moving his eyes from Vader’s mask, declared; “Then my father is truly dead.” Luke closed his eyes, sorrow and frustration apparent, before he opened them and briskly walked off towards the turbolift, escorted by the troopers.
Vader’s eyes must have followed Luke too, since his mask stared after the blonde Jedi. The Sith looked uncharacteristically still as his last glimpse of his son is taken away by the turbolift door hissing shut.
Vader then turned away, hands behind his back, as he takes careful, measured steps to the railing Luke had been before, places a hand on it, and stares off into the distance.
Lost in thought? Ben wondered. Or trying to reconcile with what had transpired between him and his own son?
Either way, this moment alone had given Ben much to think about…
The vision faded into focus, and Ben blinked rapidly. He saw the thick, red lines on the turbolift light up from bottom to top and the door slid open, revealing Luke and Vader.
The former’s eyes glanced around as they walked forward, side by side, to the stairs. Ben hesitantly followed, a dark, oily feeling permeating the room, setting him on edge.
They came to a halt at the top of the stairs, a throne turned away from them before them. The throne slowly turned around, revealing the cloaked, shriveled figure of Emperor Palpatine.
Ben pressed his lips together, and mentally berated himself.
How could he have forgotten about Palpatine? If he was witnessing whatever went down between Luke and Vader, of course Palpatine would be there!
“Welcome, young Skywalker,” Palpatine’s croak of a voice greeted the newcomers. “I have been expecting you. You’ll no longer need those.” the old man lifted a finger, and Luke’s binders fell off, hitting the floor with a light ping . Luke stared at his freed hands for a moment, before slowly looking up at the Emperor, expression now guarded.
“Guards, leave us.” The Red Guards on either side of the turbolift silently obeyed their master’s orders, and Ben glanced once more at his uncle as he saw Palpatine’s eyes were still locked onto Luke.
The blonde man was calmly meeting the Emperor’s stare.
“I’m looking forward to completing your training,” Palpatine’s voice rasped. “In time, you will call me… master .”
Luke minutely shook his head, and Ben noticed Vader’s helmet momentarily turn to the blonde Jedi.
“You’re gravely mistaken,” Luke was still calmly meeting Palpatine’s yellow gaze. “You won’t convert me as you did my father.”
Ben shifted, uncomfortable, as the Emperor leaned forward, eyes still pinned onto his uncle. “Oh no…” the old man rose from his throne. “My young Jedi,” he hobbled forward, footfalls soft upon the glossy floor. “You will find that it is you who are mistaken…” Palpatine leans over Luke from the stairs, literally looking down on him, and a slight, cruel grin forms on his face as Luke mutinously stares back. “About a great, many things. ”
Vader then slowly raised the hand that held Luke’s saber in it, effectively drawing Palpatine’s attention away from Luke. “His lightsaber.”
Palpatine took it, softly handling it. “Ah yes,” his voice was light. “A Jedi’s weapon.” the Sith glanced back at Luke, smirking slightly. “Much like your father’s.” There was an implication there that made Ben tense, clenching his hands together. “By now you must know that your father can never be turned from the darkside,” quietly, Ben’s eyes flickered over to Vader, who had turned to Luke again, his upper body moving this time, and he seemed to be staring intently at Luke as the blonde Jedi continued his stare-down with Palpatine. “So will it be with you.”
“You’re wrong,” Luke’s voice was low as he shook his head. “Soon I’ll be dead, and you with me.”
Palpatine chuckled through his yellowing teeth. “Perhaps you refer to the imminent attack of your rebel fleet?” Luke’s expression twitched. “Yes…I assure you, we are quite safe from your friends here.” the Emperor’s words turned mocking as he began to move back to his throne.
“Your overconfidence is your weakness.” Ben started at his uncle’s sudden declaration, seeing his blue eyes slightly narrowed onto Palpatine’s back. The Sith Emperor quickly turned back around, a slight scowl on his face, and Vader’s helmet once more looked towards Luke.
“Your faith in your friends is yours.” Palpatine sneered and walked back to his throne.
“It is pointless, to resist, my son.” Vader says to Luke, and Ben heard the faint, subtle softness on the word “son”, like Vader was caressing the word.
Palpatine, meanwhile, had sat back on the throne, looking very relaxed and self-important.
“Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design. Your friends, up there on the sanctuary moon,” he raised a hand and carelessly pointed in a vague direction out the window. “Are walking into a trap.” Luke began to look increasingly concerned as Palpatine continued his running commentary. “As is your rebel fleet.”
Once again, Ben saw Vader look from Luke’s tight expression to Palpatine’s smug one. “It was I who allowed the alliance to know the location of the shield generator. It is quite safe from your pitiful little band. An entire legion of my best troops await them.” Luke briefly glanced away, mouth set in a firm line, as Palpatine leaned forward, faux-concern on his face, as he spoke to Luke like he was a misbehaving child; “Oh, I’m afraid the shield generator will be quite operational when your friends arrive.”
Ben couldn’t help but notice the rising anger in both himself and his uncle as the sly grin formed once again on the Emperor’s arrogant face.
Because the thing is that Ahsoka and Thrawn haven’t met (as far as we know) and have no real reason to dislike each other, and if anything they wouldn’t really mind one another — a conflict would have to be written into the situation now. I could see summarised versions of scenes from Alliances being written in / adapted as flashbacks, given they have Hayden Christensen back, and given they did it with The Mandalorian (Cobb Vanth was a book character, and his flashback was him summarising a book. He was also heavily implied to be gay with the guy he was raising a baby Hutt with, but apparently they left them during the month between the books and The Mandalorian, as they were not relevant to the plot. Or how the events or The Clone Wars Season 7 were mentioned in the Ahsoka novel. A few differences, different lightsaber colours and whatnot, but excusable.
I mean, maybe, but Ahsoka didn't seem too thrilled about Thrawn in that Mandalorian episode. They haven't met (we believe), but this scene doesn't really make me feel Ahsoka gets the warm fuzzies when considering Thrawn, either.
Tumblr media
And I kind of want to get into an aside about this whole...thing for a moment. This Mandalorian episode was very light on the context of this whole confrontation (which is putting it nicely), but a little bit of a deep dive into Wookieepedia produces, well, an interesting scene.
Morgan Elsbeth
Tumblr media
So remember that Clone Wars episode where Lux Bonteri and Ahsoka got stuck on some wintry planet, Bo-Katan smacked Ahsoka in the ass, and then Ahsoka decapitated four members of Death Watch?
That was Carlac.
The slaves from that episode?
Were the Ming Po.
That woman who was executed in that episode?
Was apparently Morgan's sister.
Somehow this led Morgan to wish death upon Ahsoka. That's...a lot of backstory that we didn't get in that episode. And even hardcore Clone Wars fans (a group I consider myself a member of) would have been hard-pressed to make that connection. *handwave*
Tumblr media
Thrawn's Confederation...rebuilding the Empire? Oh boy, I really, really hope they're not going to link the First Order to Thrawn, because...eek.
Tumblr media
Oof, I mean, the only way I can justify this considering Zahn's current Thrawn-canon is if Thrawn is trying to unite the remanents of the Empire to fight against the Grysk, as the New Republic would just be too busy trying to establish a legitimate government to get involved in the Outer Rim. The Chaos
And so maybe, maybe, we'll get a deep-cut reference to Alliances in order to pull Ahsoka to Thrawn's side. Although who knows where Ahsoka's mind is at regarding Anakin. Surely Luke told her about Anakin's last-ditch effort at redemption on Death Star II. I don't know. I have extremely mixed feelings about Ahsoka post-Rebels Season 2, so to me, it feels somewhat forced (hahahaha, that's a pun).
So yeah, they could include a flashback, but I'm not going to count on it in this context.
Now, the Cobb Vanth information was fascinating and I actually need to read the Aftermath series (I kinda skimmed through one of them - the one where Leia shows up in full "fuck you, I'm Vader's daughter costume," but to be honest, I didn't remember much else from them). I had been wracking my brain as to why I didn't remember Cobb Vanth from the Legends books, but this would explain it, haha.
Hello there! I saw and LOVED your Jedi Night art, it destroyed me emotionally, good job!!
Can I ask who your favorite SWR character was? And your favorite episodes? I get really excited to meet new people who love SWR, don't mind me!
Ok so first off, I LOVE to talk nerd, and second, can I be your best friend? You seem so nice🥺
So…. Question one:
Favorite Star Wars character?
Uggg that’s painful. I’ll divide it up
Movie trilogys:
So in the prequels I’d say obi wan.
The original definitely Darth Vader.
Sequels, Poe dameron.
Singles:
I love all the characters in rogue one, and I’m not gonna try to dig thru that mess 😅
And in Han Solo, Donald Glover played his part as Lando incredibly well, so probably him.
Shows:
Clone wars
So this was SUCH a good, and in depth show. It really showed the characters in a light that the movies could not.
Anakin was shown to do the wrong things for the right reasons. (The ends justify the means sorta stuff) and his fall from the light which was tragic, but KiNdA understandable? I really liked his character arc, even though it destroyed me🥲
Now Ashoka, is a lean, mean, girl power, fighting machine. Great character arc as well. (You wanna know what? Just assume that applies to all the characters I bring up) what I really like about her, is kinda finding herself. She was kept in the jedi order, and it was her whole life. Something that would be painful to walk away from. She kinda struggled through out the whole show with finding her balance. It’s important to apply that to our own situation I guess?
Obi wan, now I’m gonna have to keep my self from going on too long about him. Love him. I think he is what the Jedi all ought to be. He wasn’t so emotional stuffed, but he had a balance of emotions. Kinda like like control your emotions, lest they control you. (Looking at you Anakin) he went through his life, which was an incredible tragic one, with his head heals high. He could have easily turned to the dark side. His master died, Satine died, the Jedi order fell along with his friends. His brother turned against him, and died by his hand. That’s a rollercoaster life right there. And when faced with the question, he said that it takes strength to resist the dark side, which makes him stronger than those who don’t. That’s an important life lesson lol.
And there’s Rex. Simply put, he’s a good ol’ boi
Bad batch
I feel like this show hasn’t developed enough for me to say, but I do like echo, and wrecker a lot 😌
Mandalorian
For the mandalorian, obviously mando. He’s a great father, and ✨not✨ lone wolf. He Took care of his kid, and gave him up when he didn’t want to. Because that’s what he thought was best.
Rebels
Now rebels is a much better show that I was expecting. I love the family dynamic, it really captured that aspect well.
Ezra. He was an amusing bratty child in the first season, and I love him. At times I still wanted to smack him…. but I like the fact that he was faced many opportunities to turn bad, and didn’t. He dabbled a little perhaps, but he’s the type of person who has to try things out for himself, And learn lessons the hard way. As he got older he really matured, and he went from a small bean to a big bean.
Of course, I love Kanan. (I love all space dads. And adoptive dads) he was a beautiful and wonderful human being. And I’m so mad that Dave killed him off 😤😤 anyway, I like the fact that he was the first to admit that he didn’t know he was doing. Instead of acting like he was just teaching Ezra, he said they were both learning from each other.
Thrawn… for reasons
Favorite episodes, and arcs?
Rebels
I loved the bit, with the Sith temple. Ashoka finally meeting Vader, love it. So much drama. Introduction to maul, and just total legitness.
And the ending. As depressing as it was, seeing the conclusion it really makes me look forward to the Ashoka show. Although will be like almost 30, And he’d’ve missed out on so much😭
Clone wars
Oh there’s so many good ones. I love the episodes focusing on Ventress. It was an unexpected journey, and darth maul was somewhat involved as well.
Obviously Umbara. This one was exceedingly painful, but it really got the point across about the injustice and individuality of the clones. I know casual Star Wars watchers tend to skim over this a bit. super powerful.
The Mortis arc, was super epic, with great visuals, symbolism. And when Anakin found out he would become Vader I almost died
While I’m talking about clones, The order arc with the inhibitor chips was stupid good. And sad as well. (I apparently really like the emotionally devastating bits and pieces)
The one with Yodas trials was a really good one. I didn’t pay good attention the first time around. Just so u know yoda has never been one of my favorite characters. But I liked him a little better after this arc. It shows us his deepest fears, and it was really nice seeing so much foreshadowing.
Asoka leaving the order was super emotional and help put things in motion
And of course the siege mandalore. The final conclusion to the clone wars, in the beginning of the empire.
Anyways sorry for the long post, I’m sure this isn’t what you asked for but what can I say 🤷‍♀️ my life’s been hijacked by Star Wars. Dave this is your fault🔫
So I saw the prequels prior to the Originals and it always bothered me how Luke got dumped on a death planet of Tatooine considering the state of that environment and shot that when down in the previous films while Leia got a life of privilege. I was hoping Bail would argue against splitting the twins. I obviously knew why it had to go that route because it had to align and follow up with the Originals. I guess it came off that Luke wasn’t really wanted...?
I already wrote a ficlet somewhat addressing this misconception.
Also, frankly, I’m getting kind of tired of rehashing the same issue - why do people keep assuming that the Larses don’t matter and don’t have a right to be in Luke’s life just because they live on Space Australia?  Why do their feelings not count just because they’re low-to-middle-class moisture farmers who don’t live in a palace on Space Switzerland-Utopia?  Why the fuck do people assume that Luke wasn’t wanted just because the Organas have a personal preference that was obviously previously established before shit hit the fans and they wanted a daughter and Bail, as a senator and Viceroy - essentially co-leader of his planet - is a fucking rational guy who understands the necessity of making hard decisions dictated by logic over emotions?
The twins weren’t just “split up because that’s how the movies have to go,” it does make internal sense within the narrative that it was safer to hide them in vastly separate locations to prevent both of them from being discovered at the same time and thus lost together, or for their latent Force bond to make them a psychic target if they grew up together and established it, acting like a beacon for Vader and Palpatine and any minions of theirs.  It sucks, it’s painful, it has awkward consequences for them later on when Leia’s a bit too loose with her lips, but that’s why these movies have a tragic backstory.  It has to suck real hard before it gets better.
Does it seem crazy that Leia wound up raised in such a screamingly obvious position as daughter of a then-Imperial Senator and princess of a highly prominent Core world being trained to follow in her biological mother’s footsteps and become a senator herself, thus occupying a very exposed role in the Empire, right under the Emperor’s and Vader’s noses?  Yeah.  But also remember that the Superman/Clark Kent illusion can actually work in real life.  Assumption is a powerful thing.  Your average Joe Citizen would assume that someone as otherworldly as Superman, an alien with the ability to fly, strength to bench-press skyscrapers and jumbo jets, heat vision, and other amazing things, would never stoop to living as a normal, humble, inconvenienced human being.  It’s not merely the hiding behind a pair of glasses and hunching over a little with a nerdy tone and habits - it’s the entire idea that a Clark Kent could even exist in the same person of Superman.  They don’t understand that he was raised as a human and actually desires this life, and doesn’t feel the need to lock himself away permanently in his dope Fortress of Solitude and never interact with the very people he wants to save and protect.
Vader was lied to by Palpatine about the nature of Padmé’s death, but there was no disputing that she actually died.  In his crushing despair, Vader accepted with heaps of self-flagellation that his child was dead.  He didn’t even know he had two children.  In his mind, whenever he saw Leia - surely they were in each others circles at least at a distance before Rogue One and ANH - even if she reminded him of Padmé six ways from Sunday, he would not assume she was his daughter, because as far as he was concerned his child was dead.  The OT establishes that latent Force-sensitivity also does not automatically make two related Force-sensitives consciously aware of each other until they mutually know one another as being related and Force-sensitive, so not even torturing Leia revealed this to him.
But I’m going off on a tangent.  Let’s break this down:
Tatooine is nothing but a source of anguish for Anakin and his personal loathing for the place made it ideal as a hiding place.  And no, I’m not just haha joking about sand.  He was a slave there and buried his mother there after slaughtering an entire village of natives he knew in his heart that he shouldn’t have.  It holds nothing but misery and failure for him.
Yes, Tatooine is abso-fucking-lutely a galactic cesspit.  It’s ruled by the most vile mob boss in the galaxy, is rife with nasty wildlife that’s out to kill you, and is haunted by the troubles brought about by strife between colonizers and the native population.  It is indisputably a dangerous place.  But it wasn’t Tatooine that killed the Larses.  It was the Empire.  Just because they look like Soft Folks™ doesn’t mean they were - Owen and Beru knew how to take care of themselves, and they certainly knew how to take care of a child in this environment.  They survived to middle age just fine, and would’ve kept going if it wasn’t for those fucking stormtroopers.  Just because they didn’t live a life of luxury also doesn’t mean they were dirt poor either.  When we meet Luke in ANH, he’s a healthy young lad who still has the privilege to fuck off with his buddies around his farm duties.  Life may be tough but it’s not squalor and deprivation for him.
But honestly, even if they WERE dirt poor, they’re still Luke’s family, and they very obviously loved him.  I almost feel like I shouldn’t have to restate it, but I will: Owen and Beru loved Shmi, and upon hearing that Anakin died and left behind a baby son, why wouldn’t they be moved and compelled to take Luke in, and why wouldn’t they deserve to have the chance to raise him in their memory?  Even though they’d be sad that Luke was orphaned, they might even see this as a blessing to be able to raise Shmi’s grandson and Anakin’s son.
As much as he bitched about chores as a teenager, Luke learned damn valuable skills growing up on a Tatooine moisture farm that, coupled with the Force, saved everybody’s asses at the Battle of Yavin, and went on to make him an ideal squadron leader.  Wealth and privilege are not always the best foundation, or at least certainly not the automatic one, for a person to learn good character either.
The Organas are human too.  Faced with a difficult choice, they decided to take this poignant opportunity to fulfill a dream they’d been deferring for some time.  Sometimes parents wish for a specific child, and that’s their prerogative (except IRL they don’t actually get to pick, they get whatever kid they gestate).  If they’d taken Luke and let Obi-Wan take Leia, we’d be having the same argument about Leia growing up on Tatooine.  There was no inequality in this decision.  Bail and Breha wanted a daughter, there was a daughter present among the twins, so they chose her.  This does not mean they valued Luke any less.  Since the twins couldn’t be raised together for their own safety, it might as well have come down to a coin toss.  Bail isn’t evil for exercising a shred of his personal emotions and desires in a situation where he otherwise knew he’d have to restrain himself.  Also, he’d be smart enough to respect the fact that both children had actual family elsewhere in the galaxy and wouldn’t think any less of the Larses just because they live on Tatooine.  The only way his decision would be careless or heinous was if he knew Luke was being taken to people who were abusive or so destitute they couldn’t even care for themselves, much less a third person, and he did nothing about it - but we know this is not that situation.
How do you feel about non-wealthy people living in harsh places here on Earth raising their children?  Would you expect all the rich people in the world to go take those children away from them and adopt them just so they could grow up “privileged” instead?  Think about how that sounds for a moment or two.
Honestly, if Bail had tried to argue about taking both twins because he felt taking Luke to his legal family on Tatooine was “cruel” or “neglectful” because of the planet’s “risky environment and poverty,” I’d hope either Obi-Wan or Yoda would have enough sense to smack him upside the head for being so thoughtless as to insult these people for being seemingly beneath him.
There is more to life than money and power/prestige, and Leia’s upbringing wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.  She was no pampered, air-headed royal spending her days sitting idle being hand-fed space grapes while her “poor” brother ate sand cookies.  She had to undergo intensive academic, political, and physical training from young childhood in order to prepare her to become a covert Rebel agent while she was still a teenager, as if being a child senator wasn’t already stressful and demanding enough.  Sure, she never lacked for anything, but that is an incredible amount of responsibility to saddle on someone who wasn’t even an adult yet (like her bio mother).  Luke was blessed with far more freedom and peace in his childhood than his sister.  And him living on Tatooine with his father’s surname wasn’t nearly as dangerous as Leia existing within the heart of the Empire while actively engaging in Rebel activities that could have cost her her life, even without getting into the whole “daughter of Anakin Skywalker” business.
Also, just because we joke about Tatooine being Space Australia doesn’t mean every single day of Luke’s childhood was THAT eventful.  It was more likely 80% dull farm life and 20% mayhem, and that 20% would be mostly Luke’s fault for being a crazy nut like his parents and getting himself into trouble he could have avoided in most cases.  In other words, growing up there might not have been nearly as “deadly” as we make it out to be.
Rebels Rewatch: "Shroud of Darkness"
Heading back to Lothal for the beginning of the end arc.
We start right away In Media Res with Kanan and Ezra fighting the Inquisitors. And man is it amazing to watch how far they've both come in their lightsaber combat.
Tumblr media
Ezra could barely duel Seventh for a minute back in "Always Two There Are" and now he's holding his own against her AND Fifth, with help granted but still.
Part of the reason why I think Season Two has to span the longest length of time out of all the seasons.
This is almost over-choreographed, lots of spins and lightsaber twirls that are frankly superfluous but they look cool so you know, whatever.
"I don't go for crazy... anymore." Do tell Kanan, lol.
It's funny because the voice actors are married.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NO I DON'T THINK THE SYMBOLISM OF EZRA DANGLING PRECARIOUSLY OFF A PRECIPICE WITH KANAN AS THE ONLY THING PREVENTING HIS FALL IS ANY KIND OF COINCIDENCE, GIVEN LATER IN THE EPISODE.
Rebels tends to be very deliberate about these things lol.
I don't think I noticed before but the past several episodes have had no fanfare and I think we all should have taken that as a clue or portent of things to come.
A+ padawan tossing Kanan, slick move.
Ezra's effortless flip over the Inquisitors. <3
Kanan complaining but ultimately having full trust in Ezra and the proud look he gives him. <3
Ezra being polite and thanking the tibedee, aww.
Okay I should stop before I gush over every second here.
Kanan expresses some rather natural worries about the fact that his and Ezra's presence is going to put the rest of the fleet at risk, since the Inquisitors keep finding them, and determines to bring in the big gun (Ahsoka) on this one. The expressions in this scene and the quiet subtle emotion is just beautiful, Kanan's worry about how to keep everyone safe just palpable.
Tumblr media
RIGHT, SURE. SMACK ME IN THE FACE WITH PRE-VADER ANAKIN FEELS WITH ANAKIN MAKING HOLOCRON LIGHTSABER TUTORIALS FOR YOUNGLINGS.
Anakin would have loved Ezra. *sobbing*
Subtle animation appreciation moment: Ezra creeping around very carefully so as not to disturb Ahsoka's meditation, and the way his hand fumbles out for the seat.
Ahsoka talking so fondly about Anakin, ow.
I remember when this aired Ahsoka's line about, "The last time I saw him, he was running off to save the Chancellor." caused quite a bit of hullabaloo in fandom because, well, TCW Season 7 wasn't actually a thing yet, from our perspective she'd just walked off in Season 5 never to be seen again.
Writers decided to be all, "Let's incorporate unfinished storylines as if they're canon!" much to fan confusion, lol, wonder if they knew at that point that they were getting renewed to finish the last season.
"I can barely protect you." "I don't need protecting." *LAUGHS IN THIS ENTIRE SEASON* Right, how many times exactly did you get captured or in trouble this season Ezra? Yeah.
Our first hints of Hera's worried misgivings about Kanan's eventual plan to separate from the fleet.
The blockade hasn't returned yet to Lothal airspace, interesting. Maybe with the Spectres gone they loosened things just a little.
Our first time hearing Ezra's theme since I think "Legacy", a nice marker of us coming home.
Did... Ahsoka not know that Ezra was from Lothal before this? What's with the question? Did she think the Spectres just picked him up randomly on one of their adventures and take him with?
Tumblr media
Still as pretty as ever.
Ahsoka's not confident enough in calling herself a Jedi to believe a Jedi Temple would open for her, boy this girl and her self-identity issues.
She doesn't think she deserves the title. She left and then everything fell apart and there was no more Order to return to, so she couldn't return, even though she maybe wanted to, even though she realized being a Jedi was what she did truly care about.
Tumblr media
OH HEY, THERE'S THE DOOR PALPATINE STEALS.
And they walk down the exact same hall that Ezra would later walk down in the finale into the bowels of the Temple, excuse me, I need to--
*weeps*
Tumblr media
I do love the Force Weirdness of this episode, how only Kanan can see the door bathed in light, how Ezra just sort of slips into the ether that is between the Temple and the Nexus of the World Between Worlds and disappears.
And I love Kanan's portion of this episode. Confronted by a vision of a dojo in the Temple and a Temple Guardian, Grand before he was an Inquisitor, who warns that trying to fight will result in failure and Ezra's fall to the Dark Side. (This speech sounds eerily similar to Grand's demoralizing speech to Ezra in "Gathering Forces" in fact.)
Tumblr media
That immediate cold protective fury aaaaah I love it!
Grand's threat here was taken way too literally as prophetic foreshadowing by fandom BTW. Still is.
So Kanan and Grand square up and in the meantime the Inquisitors have found them. Again. I don't think they ever explained how, perhaps it's just that Inquisitor intuition that made Kanan and Ezra have to separate the first time, back in "Gathering Forces".
Hi Seventh! Hi Fifth!
Ahsoka reminiscing about Yoda. :(
Tumblr media
Ezra, meanwhile, casually chatting the man up. XD
Kanan doing some casual Jar'Kai. Just cause.
[Insert "You're doing amazing sweetie" reaction image.]
OH BOY NOW WE GET TO DELVE INTO AHSOKA'S GUILT ISSUES ABOUT ANAKIN.
Bby girl knows deep down that he's become Vader but is still so vehemently in denial of it, the Force is smacking her in the face with the weight of her own guilt. Ahsoka feels like, "Maybe if I hadn't left..." but it's not about her, Anakin made his own stupid choices, there was nothing, metatextually, that Ahsoka could have done that would have prevented Anakin's fall it's not her fault.
Tumblr media
:((((((((((
This is something I hope we will finally delve deep into and get over in the Ahsoka show. Babygirl needs to forgive herself for the wrongs she imagines she's done Anakin and accept that he made his choice, just like she made hers.
A snippet of Ahsoka's theme here, just for extra sads.
Oh good! It's time to play my least favorite game: Is this scene a commentary and critique of the actions of the Prequel Jedi Order or is this in-text Unreliable Narrator from Yoda as a person with obvious Survivor's Guilt.
It's especially annoying because Filoni you worked on TCW, remember all that enslaving, war criming, and general evil the Separatists were involved in on a daily basis? Are you saying the Jedi were wrong for wanting to try and stop all of that and protect the people put in harm's way? THIS WAS YOUR MATERIAL DUDE.
Love the subtle effect of the ring patterns turning red and the clear effort it's taking Seventh and Fifth to force their way into the Temple.
Kanan, meanwhile, confronted by his worst fears parroted by the vision of Grand, accepts that he cannot control his or Ezra's future, and that he should not try to. He lets go, gives up his fear of failing, gives up the instinct to cling tight to Ezra, his attachment, and acknowledges that what happens will happen, he will just do the best he can.
AND HE PASSES THE TEST AND GETS KNIGHTED BY THE FORCE ITSELF BABY!
Tumblr media
I'm so proud of him. :)
Yoda is frustratingly cryptic, only telling Ezra, "Find Malachor" (which made KOTOR fans go nuts) before letting him fade back into realspace. To this day I'm still not quite clear just why Yoda decided to sent them that way except maybe to prove a point about what can happen when you act out of fear. Malachor does contribute to a lot of Ezra's character development, for both good and bad, so... I dunno.
Vision!Grand fighting his former co-workers aaaah I love it.
Yoda waving fondly at Ahsoka awww.
AND THE BIG DARK ASSHOLE HIMSELF IS HERE TO OVERSEE THE IMPERIAL DISCOVERY OF THE TEMPLE.
Again, I do wonder just how far back they planned the World Between Worlds reveal. Because yeah an ancient Jedi Temple is a pretty nice find but Palpatine being personally pleased with its discovery?
This episode is obviously very Plot Important but I do tend to skip it when I'm rewatching episodes, I'm not fond of the kind of downer ambiguous ending or the vaguely Jedi-critical sentiments that maybe lace through the episode.
That being said, it is a good one and definitely worth at least a couple watches. Contributes to the melancholy, "Everything is going to change" feel the last few episodes leading up to Malachor had. And that was one of this season's strengths, the build-up to what they knew would be a status quo-changing finale. Also contributes to the wider arc of the "five year plan" and the secret reason Palpatine was interested in Lothal, laying down the tracks for that reveal eeeearrrly so that it feels completely natural.
Love that. Between that and Ezra and Kanan being badass it's not terrible, just not my favorite.
Darth Vader vol. 3 #1 (2020) | Greg Pak & Raffaele Ienco HOLY SHIT THAT IS A HELL OF A LOT TO UNPACK AND HOW MUCH IT’S DRAWING ON WHAT WE KNOW OF ANAKIN SKYWALKER TO TELL ITS STORY. All the moments in red are Vader’s memories, the word bubbles his thoughts, as he lashes out in the aftermath of his confrontation with Luke on Cloud City.  That Luke falling away from him triggers all these memories of the other people that were “stolen” from him--specifically Shmi, Padme, and Luke.  It’s fascinating that he focuses on these three, the very obvious absences of Obi-Wan and Ahsoka incredibly telling, because those are the two who actively said, “No, I won’t let you do this.” and stood up to stop him. This is post-”Twilight of the Apprentice”, so Vader and Ahsoka have had their showdown and this issue is incredibly aware of it.  Vader’s going to hunt down everyone who made Luke weak, which is going hand in hand with how Anakin is projecting like hell in these moments, that the dark side is more powerful, that Luke needs fear and pain, that he’s going to destroy everyone that made Luke weak is about himself and how he has had to justify and rationalize every step he’s taken into the dark side.  That it has to be worth it, because otherwise it was all for nothing. That was built on in both previous Darth Vader comics, the sunken cost fallacy, the inability to face what he’s done, the glimmers of something underneath that.  This comic is aware of those as well, but it struck me how focused he was on weakness needing to be eradicated, which is such a stellar connection to this moment from “Twilight of the Apprentice”:
Tumblr media
The thing that really gets me about Anakin’s projecting here is Palpatine’s reaction to hearing that Vader’s gone on a rampage. Piett gets a call from the Emperor who wants to talk to Vader, Vader’s gone, Piett nervously reports that, and the Emperor laughs.
Tumblr media
Yes, there’s an element of Sidious knowing that Vader will go after Luke and then he can try to turn Luke and replace Vader with him. But also it signals just how awful Vader’s mindset is about all of this, that Sidious has over and over made Vader suffer to chain him further into the dark side, he humiliates him after any small defeat, he feels Vader’s hate and rage grow and says that’s good, etc. This is just another way for Vader to suffer, that he’s not finding something good with Luke, but instead using this as barbs to hurt himself, to make himself bleed all the more, because all Anakin knows is pain and the dark side now. “You came to punish someone... but, unfortunately, there’s no one left,” says the droid Vader takes with him, who is there to contrast against what we’re actually being shown:  Vader is there to be punished.  To punish himself with these memories and pain, of the people he feels were ripped away from him, that were supposed to be his. He suffers through the memories on Tatooine, some part of him knowing all of this is wrong, which is why he sees Yoda’s face, he knows this is the path that lead him to suffering, and now he justifies it that he was destroying the weak Anakin Skywalker, he’ll destroy all the people who made Luke Skywalker weak as well. This perfectly fits with Filoni’s take on Vader in “Twilight of the Apprentice”, in addition to how she represents everything he was wrong about as Anakin Skywalker, that he’s so wrapped up in his hate for himself as he is for his external hate, so he needs to destroy her.  “This is one of the points George and I had discussed, that it’s the very reason why there isn’t any empathy for Ahsoka.  It’s not like he looks upon an old friend.  He looks upon a horrible memory.  It’s connected to a bunch of painful memories.  Which, in one version, symbolizes his loyalty to the Republic, when everybody else betrayed him, so he would see everyone else as a traitor.  Or he has to recognize his complete failure to side with his friends.  Well, he’s certainly not going to do that.” --Dave Filoni, podcast interview Vader is experiencing the exact same thing in this issue, that he looks upon something and it’s connected to all of these memories, so he wants to destroy it, because he needs to destroy anything that reminds him of Anakin Skywalker, of the things he was wrong about as Anakin, but he’s never going to do that, he’s never going to recognize that he made the wrong choices. This is a comic that is very aware of what it’s referencing (Darth Vader vol. 1, Darth Vader vol. 2, Star Wars vol. 1, Star Wars Rebels, Revenge of the Sith, Return of the Jedi, etc.) and that’s why the ending smacks it right into our faces one last time: Vader goes to Padme’s apartment, finds a transmitter there, follows it to a seedy bar on Vendaxa and runs into, thinking, Power, Luke.  If you only knew... only power can save... Padme?
Tumblr media
He’s thinking about how power is the only thing that can save something, then immediately runs into Padme’s doppleganger, connecting us right back to that line from Revenge of the Sith, where he’s in full Darth Vader mode, that was right there at the beginning of Darth Vader, it’s one of the foundational aspects of his character.  “Love won’t save anything.  Only power will.” All of this, ALL OF THIS is connected together for Vader.  His belief that power is the only thing that can save anyone, that the dark side is the only path. (”No.  [The dark side] is all there is.”  --Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith,  "The dark side always wins, Obi-Wan.  You should know that by now." --Star Wars vol. 1 2015) That the dark side is the only true power, that it always wins, that he cannot admit to what he’s done as wrong (despite that some part of him absolutely knows that this is a giant rationalization and he knows he was wrong to step onto this path, George Lucas has directly said that, as well as we see him cry, see him moan, “What have I done!?”), cannot face his own demons and move beyond them.  That is a core thing about Anakin Skywalker, it’s in nearly every story about him, that he cannot face himself or how wrong his choices are. Instead, he just keeps doubling down on the dark side, keeps idealizing these people as possessions for him to have, that they’re his and how dare anyone take them from him, they’re his!!! That’s why Obi-Wan and Ahsoka’s absences are so keenly felt, despite that they’re very much connected to everything that this comic is drawing on, because he cannot see them as his things. And now he’s trying to do the same to Luke, to force him onto the path of the dark side, to destroy the people who made him “weak”, because Vader has to think that Luke must join the dark side to justify everything that he’s done, because other people’s senses of agency don’t matter to him, and he’s in deep denial about how much Anakin Skywalker is still alive within him. AND UGH IT’S SO FUCKING GOOD, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CONNECT IT TO ALL OF THIS OTHER STUFF GOING ON WITH ANAKIN SKYWALKER.
Obi-wan x reader.
Tumblr media
Summary: Imagine sitting down Obi-wan, Anakin and Ahsoka to talk about their feelings. Though what is supposed to be family therapy just turns into 'negotiations'.
Word count:1065
Warnings: Nothing.
A/n:Request for anon. Xx
You were not sure what to do. You had been on your way to Kamino something about a recon mission. When Anakin was too busy arguing with Ahsoka, he was supposed to be piloting the ship. You and Obi-wan strapped in next to each other, Ahsoka co piloting.
"You are so stubborn, master."
"I am not."
"Yes you are and you are reckless."
"Am not!"
"Are too!" Wow, that sounded like like R2, the bickering between them had been going all day about silly things.
"Not."
"Are"
"Nope."
"Yea-"
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwhhh!" R2D2s scream seemed to stop the pair from fighting.
"Ahhhhhhhh!" Well, more like made them jump out of their skins, and they ended up crashing the ship some how. Smacking right into Hoth, an ice planet. Yours and Obi-wan's hands intertwined as the ship fell at high speed towards the surface bracing yourselves.
Though you were not with Kenobi, you were very close with him, you knew he couldn't being a Jedi. Did not stop your feelings from suffocating you either. You were not a Jedi, but what would be know as a rebel. Okay maybe not that far, you just worked along side the Jedi helping where you could, mostly being a healer.
"Do not say it, Ben..." The frown upon his face when his eyes met yours, the crease in his brow stunned his response. He did not know what you meant.
"Another happy landing." The external groan from you, Anakin smirked at Obi-wan as he turned in his chair. Obi-wants lips now shaped into an o, before he turned make to you with a grin.
"Oops." The smirk evident on Anakin's face angered you, his lips twisted up, his tone sarcastic.
"Shut up, Ani."  Oh wow, he really was like Annie, he was an orphan...  It was almost embarrassing seeing Padmè call Anakin that nickname it was annoying. 'Oh ani, help me!' 'Oh ani,' Ugh, worst secret relationship.
The way the smirk melt from the Jedi's face like lava, he spun around back to the control panel.
No long after that, they started fighting again, because the ship would not start, Obi-wan now invoked, you on the sidelines.
"For goodness sake , Anakin. Look what you've done, again."
"Look at what I've done? Look at your hair! It looks terrible."
"Sorry? You have been copying my hair for years!"
"Me? You shouldn't even be a Jedi master, you're scared that I am more powerful." The shouting increasingly getting louder, as well as more frequent scoffing.
"You a master , master? You are too immature, plus you got hit in the face by a broccoli last week."
"Oh, now your getting involved? I am a trunk and you are stick, padawan."
"Anakin, she's right you are too imma-"
With that you had left, R2 following you as you exited the ship, with thin layers you entered the snowy atmosphere. The cold hitting you like a phone falling on your face. There you and R2 began repairing the ship. No one came looking for you, in fact you could slightly hear the shouting still. Fixing the ship didn't take long, especially since R2 did all the work.
Walking slowly against the harsh winds back to the ship, the cold nipping at your nose. Why did no one bring coats? Your poor grip on your shoes making it difficult to climb the slope to into the ship. After a few attempts you made it in to the ship, the warm are engulfing your freezing body, R2 following behind.
Once you had made it into the cockpit, all three of them were now sat back down, in silence. As the door opened , their heads turned towards you and R2. Obi-wan standing up , his face in distress as he notices your trembling body.
“Where have you been?” Shrugging his robes of placing them of your shoulders, pulling them around you, leaving him in a brown turtleneck.
“Fixing the ship.”
“Y/n, we would’ve done that.” Ahsoka had piped in, she had heard of the creatures that lived upon Hoth, she felt guilty.
“Really? I think you were all too busy fighting, again.” Taking a sheet, the warmth of of Obi-wan robes, raising your temperature. Silence from them all, Obi-wan back in the seat next to you.
“I’ve had enough of your fighting, we could’ve died today, because you , Anakin,were too busy, arguing whether you were immature or not, clearly you are, otherwise you would’ve dropped it.” Anakins face was red as he looked at the floor, you were right and he knew it.
“And Obi-wan , as much as I love you, you just need to be calm with them don’t get so angry....” Your hand upon the brown fabric on his shoulder, leaning to his ear to whisper.
“it’s obvious you have the better hair, no need to argue.” A grin sat on his lips, a small blush, he tried to to hide it facing away from Anakin and Ahsoka.
“Right, Ahsoka, less teasing when we are in dangerous situations. Okay, that all I have to say. Wait, now go have a group hug.”
Hesitating they all got up slowly, Anakin and Ahsoka closed meeting first. Obi-wan next up , he had lifted you out of your seat by your upper arm, looking into his eyes, mouth gapped.
“You are a part of our unit.” His hand now on your lower back, guiding you to the other Jedi, a smile upon your face. In seconds you were pulled into a tight hug , pressed against Ahsoka and Obi-wan. Though, you were not related, that would be weird since you and Obi-wan had an non official thing. You felt at home.
Well, until bloody Anakin, kills a bunch of kids again, tries to kill Obi-wan , had body parts chopped off. When Obi-wan was in exile you did go with him, to Tatooine, to much of your dislike of the heat and the sand. What was non- official quickly became official. The amount of times you’d see Ahsoka were limited, but she was not gone.
Febuwhump Day 2
Prompt: “I can’t take it anymore”
Warnings: graphic descriptions of violence and torture
read on AO3
Business and Pleasure
He's lost track of how long he'd been here. By the numbness in his chain-tied arms and the hollow ache of his belly, he'd guess a few days. The chamber she is keeping him in has no windows, no way to judge whether the beatings he endures are ten minutes or ten hours.
And without the Force, Obi-Wan truly feels like he is merely floating through some sort of boundless wasteland.
A week ago (two weeks? a month?) he wasn't chained in a torture chamber with a Force suppressant entrapping his body and mind. Obi-Wan was enduring the already-horrific Battle of Jabiim.
They weren't ready for such a difficult trial so early in the war. Not only did the Separatists have the upper hand strategically, but they had the support of the Jabiimi rebels who were acclimated to the constant rain and random deadly mudslides.
Plain and simple, the battle was a blood bath before Asajj Ventress pulled him out of the burning walker. Now, he has no idea of the outcome.
He has no idea if Anakin is okay. No way of reaching through their bond to tug at his Force presence with reassurance. The damned Sith torture mask not only prevents him from using the Force, but it chokes him with the icy fist of the Dark Side. All he can feel is the constant stream of anger, pain, and death that seems to have amplified through the galaxy since the Clone Wars began.
No wonder Ventress is so irritable all the time. She has to feel this stream of darkness on a constant basis.
Speaking of Ventress, the door to the far side of the chamber opens, and in walks his captor. She walks with her usual long strides and slight sway of her toned body as though she is strutting into a cantina and not her prisoner's keep. When she notices he is awake, her lips turn in a sinister smile that morphs the vertical tattoos at the corners of her mouth.
"Kenobi, how lucky of you that I don't have to beat you awake."
The torture mask only has eyeholes, which makes speaking difficult-- but not impossible. He forces a smile, even though she can't see it anyway, but it makes him feel better.
"If there were such a thing as luck, I would agree."
She saunters over, an electroblade she likes to use when he mouths off just a little too much hanging menacingly in her hand. With his hands and feet chained so that he hangs in midair, Obi-Wan is entirely at Ventress's mercy. He has no way to strike back. No way to use the Force to unchain him. All he can do is try to figure out why in Sith's hell she is continuing this ruthless song and dance.
"Your disbelief of luck is ignorant. How else would you end up here with me?" she says as she runs the deactivated electroblade tip down the center of his chest.
"I do believe that was a deliberately set trap," he eyes her. "Nothing to do with having bad luck."
"Oh right. It is a shame that so many others had to die for me to get my hands on you. A shame for you at least."
He swallows hard, trying to keep his emotions at bay. Trying to prevent her from seeing how the brutal death of his comrades affects him.
"I'd think you'd resent this task. To be pulled off the battlefield for the sheer purpose of having to deal with me? And to what importance am I anyway?"
She rolls her eyes. "You really are denser than durasteel, Kenobi, you know that?"
"And you'd prefer to be back on Jabiim raising the death toll."
A sharp jab at his ribs and Obi-Wan's body seizes as a sharp volt of electricity courses through him. He sags against his restraints, breathing hard through the residual shocks that pulsate through his fingers and toes.
"Don't get me wrong, my duty is to be an assassin, but this--" she hits him again with the electroblade. "this mixes business and pleasure."
Ventress says this, but when Obi-Wan looks at her he can see the glint in her eye fade at her own words. She claims to enjoy this-- perhaps she does in some ways-- but he can also tell the weeks of torture may be taking a toll on her as well.
"I didn't realize business was also being conducted here," he says cooly.
"Oh, you thought I was simply a masochist then?"
"That would be one explanation."
"And other explanations?"
He tries to shrug, but with his arms restrained he just kind of bobs in place. "Orders."
Ventress crosses her arms. "I don't take orders from anyone, Kenobi."
"Not even your Master?"
The uncharged electroblade slams across his face, snapping his head to the side. He can feel the warm ooze of blood trickle down his cheek from where she struck him.
"What do you think you know of me?"
If he could grin, he would. Ventress has kept the truth of her allegiances held tight. Her story was that she was a Separatist spy, and his torture was for Republic information-- except, Obi-Wan quickly realized she asked him no questions about the secrets of the Republic or the Jedi. She only inflicted pain.
"Don't you think the Sith torture mask gave it away, Ventress?"
She glares at him. "My eyes aren't yellow, Kenobi. I'm no Sith."
"But you do work for the Sith. Tell me, how is Count Dooku these days?"
It's a shot in the dark, but from the way her eyes widen ever so slightly he can tell he has figured it out. It wouldn't be the first time Dooku has captured him, but the torture is certainly new. Even on Geonosis, his aim wasn't for pain, but for partnership. At least, initially.
A blast of electricity radiates out from his ribs again. This time, she holds it a few seconds longer to truly demonstrate her displeasure at his deductions. When she finally pulls away, dots are swimming around his vision and he can hear his heart pounding in his ears.
"You know nothing."
"Or maybe..." he huffs through the lasting effects of the electrocution. "these aren't... Dooku's orders. Certainly... isn't his style." Obi-Wan forces his head up so he can look her in the eyes. She hovers the electroblade above his abdomen, but her icy stare is trained on him. "So am I standing in your way?"
"Of what?" she growls.
"Becoming his apprentice."
There is a moment of silence, and Obi-Wan expects the electroblade to dig into his chest once again.
Instead, Ventress lowers it. Sets it back on the tray.
And picks up a paddle.
"He is a fool," she says venomously as the paddle makes contact with his left side. "to think you'd join him." Another strike to his other side. Obi-Wan twists painfully in his restraints, screwing his eyes shut tighter with every blunt contact with his aching body. "So I decided to take matters," the paddle smacks into his kneecap. "into my own hands." She grabs him by the chin, forcing him to look at her. He blinks through the dizziness to try and focus on her pale outline. "I will break you, Kenobi, so my Master may see your uselessness once and for all."
She pushes him away, forcing his wrists and ankles to catch on the shackles and reopen the wounds that seem to never get the chance to close. His breath catches in his throat, and he has to cough to force the air from his lungs. All he can taste is blood and sweat; he feels it dripping down his chin and hears drop, drop, dropping rhythmically onto the ground.
Every second seems to pull him closer to unconsciousness. A part of him welcomes the respite. At least for a little bit.
"I can't take this anymore," Obi-Wan shakes his head, causing drops of blood to fling off the ends of his hair.
"Is the pain becoming too much, Kenobi?"
And he smiles.
"Oh no, that's fairly tolerable so far. I meant your pathetic lamenting."
Ventress stares at him incredulously before lashing out with her bare hand to strike the side of his head. Obi-Wan sees stars.
She's yelling at him now. Threats of even more horrible and painful tortures she is ready to try on him. And yet, he is invigorated with a new feeling of satisfaction. His body feels as though it is crumbling, but it will be worth it. Dark Siders use their anger for strength, it also feeds a fatal weakness. Ventress's impulsivity and inability to control her fury has revealed the root of her plan-- to watch him break.
By no means will he let that happen.
Bail is unsure why he’s being told this, but he is intrigued. “Where is the boy now?”
“Here,” Mon smiles, “on this base, being cared for by Shara Bey and Kes Dameron.”
Bail nods upon recognizing the names. Shara is their best pilot, and Kes is their best combat leader.
“However,” Mon states, “they cannot care for the boy full-time. There is something...unique about him. Something you are more equipped to handle.”
Bail narrows his eyes. “What?”
“Ezra Bridger is Force-sensitive,” Mon reveals.
Bail leans back in his chair and blinks once. “I see…”
“If your son is anything like his true parents,” Mon says, “he will soon require guidance. This boy also requires that guidance.”
“So,” Bail says, “you want me to shield them both from the Empire. Get them a...teacher.”
26. Prince Luke Organa: A New Hope   -lightningbisexual
An AU where Leia was sent to Tatooine with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru and Luke was sent to Alderaan as the prince. It begins from where Luke is captured by the Empire in A New Hope. I follow more his story than Leia's because we all know she's going to be a badass on her own and I really want to see Luke grow up and learn to face his fears.
However, her ferocity and anger make it difficult for her to train as a Jedi. Han Solo is also developing feelings for Prince Luke Organa and has no goddamn clue how to deal with it.
Wannabe Part 12: A Bone To Pick
-gosh, i really need to stay consistent with this -i've been having a rough few weeks guys, sorry -this chapter feels kind of slow to me, but I promise it's still interesting! i'm trying to delve deeper into how your character will develop in this story (if you have any recommendations or ideas/critique, feel free to comment below!) PART 11
'𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲...' -𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝 & 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞
It was dark. Not a single sliver of light passed through the veil of nothing, shrouding (Y/n) in nothing but inky black. Somewhere, far away in that nothing, came a bird's cry. (Y/n) wanted to run towards it, and to grasp the comfort of not being alone in the abyss, but she couldn't move. Her limbs were glued in place while her head filled with the yearning want to sleep. Her mind told her to get up and run yet her body refused to obey.
"(Y/n)..."
She was falling deep into the abyss, floating downwards and through thick mist. Her eyes flicked shut and her senses slowly numbed.
"...is this what you want...?"
Yes, she thought. Here, she couldn't feel any pain or sorrow, or virtually anything. It was as if she were never a Jedi to begin with. Even though she hadn't the faintest idea about what was happening, she didn't want to fight the darkness consuming her whole. It was almost nice to not have to think about anything. No responsibilities. No fighting. Just her and the inky black of space.
"...do you truly believe that?"
(Y/n)'s mind came to, but her senses were off. The feeling returned to her fingers and all the numbness in her limbs crawled away, yet she couldn't seem to sense anything in the abyss. In fact, there was nothing there to sense. She opened her eyes and found herself standing on air. From the shadows, a woman emerged, head held high and eyes calmer than any pond or lake she had every seen. Her lekku swayed as the darkness parted around her long, brown robes. The long, white markings on her lekku were almost like lanterns in the dark. "Come with me," she said. "I will take you to a place where there is no pain, no suffering, and no sorrow." The woman held out a hand with a gentle smile.
(Y/n) didn't know what she was doing as she crept towards the woman. There was something so familiar about her that she couldn't place, something so close to the back of her mind that she tried so hard to remember. (Y/n) hesitantly grabbed her hand. There was a brilliant flash of light that tore away the darkness. The abyss of nothing morphed into a brilliant space of purples and blacks mixed in with shining stars and constellations. "Wha...who...?"
The woman warmly smiled and guided (Y/n) through the spectacular space. Images and scenes swirled in the stars, enlarging into bright display screens. Some were of (Y/n) laughing with her men, others with Fives and the cadets back on Kamino. There was a particular one that made (Y/n) let go of the woman's hand and pause in her step. In the screen was a scene of her walking through the front doors of the temple. Her master said something before patting (Y/n) on the back and leading her inside with a smile.
That was when (Y/n) whipped around to face the woman behind her. This was no woman, but her master, the one who cared and practically raised (Y/n) for so long. Shaak had seen her wane and wax like the moons and watched her grow to learn so much. She was the mother (Y/n) never knew she needed. Shaak smiled. "I see you are becoming conscious again. May I ask what made you so keen on giving up?" (Y/n) ran a hand through her hair with a passive shrug. "I don't know."
"Is that all?" she lightly inquired. "'I don't know'? Surely you can do better." (Y/n) knitted her brows together. "What do you mean?"
"You are ignoring your true feelings. Although you fight and keep your ground, your heart tells you to run." (Y/n) didn't understand. She never ran away; not in a battle, not from her friends, not from anyone. She was a Jedi, a peacekeeper among many who were supposed to keep the balance. Supposed to. (Y/n) frowned. So what if the Council weren't very good at their job? So what if they were probably part of the reason she was kidnapped? So what if they weren't as wise as they should have? That was then, this was now. (Y/n) refused to be like them, and that made her different. She didn't run away, she accepted who she was, she understood that empathy was needed to be who she--
"You run from the truth." Shaak finally said. Her gaze was distant as (Y/n) looked up. "In time, you will have to decide."
The shining stars and constellations began to fade into thin air as Shaak gently placed her transparent hands on (Y/n)'s shoulders. "The time will come when you must make a decision. Whatever you choose, remember that I will always be proud of you." There was a gust of breeze that seemed to fuel (Y/n)'s confusion. Her emotions, stable only moments ago, were bursting at the seams and yanking at her heart strings once again. She broke into a sprint, running as fast as her legs could take her. "Master!" she cried. "Please! Don't leave me!"
(Y/n) knew she was gone. Her presence had long been carried away by the wind, yet (Y/n) just couldn't give up like that. She couldn't let go. "Please...don't...don't leave me too."
---
The blinding lights were brighter than a flaming asteroid. (Y/n) slapped a hand over her eyes and sat up fast enough to make her dizzy. "Take it easy will ya?" said Luke. (Y/n) rubbed her eyes and squinted around the gray room. This was definitely not the ship. There were no doors or steam popping out of the floors or any yelling about 'stormtroopers' and the 'empire'. Instead, smack to the side of the room, stood a medical droid. It treated a sick patient as Luke made his way into the vast room. "How are you feeling? You've been asleep since we escaped the Death Star."
(Y/n) sat up. "Since the what?" Luke blinked with a shy chuckle. "Oh right." he mumbled. "The Death Star was that space station we were on. And if you're wondering, we're on Yavin Four, in the Rebel Base."
"Rebels...? Uh..."
(Y/n) spotted Leia in the doorway of the med bay. She smiled at (Y/n) and immediately appeared at her bedside. "I'm so glad you're awake," said Leia. "How are you feeling?"
"I am well, thank you Leia. May I ask what exactly is going on in," (Y/n) made a gesture with her hand, "here?" Leia pulled up a seat by her bedside. "I'll give you a quick overview." She began with the end of the Clone Wars, then the terrifying story of the Jedi Purge and the Rise of the Empire. She spoke of her adoptive father, Bail Organa (a man (Y/n) so happened to know quite well through Padme), as well as the emergence of the Rebel Base. At the end of it, a bitterness rose in (Y/n)'s gut. It was that same feeling of guilt and regret she felt the day Fives died. It was an uncomfortable sinking feeling that kept telling her she was a failure, and although hard to admit, absolutely true.
(Y/n) Kryze failed at the one thing every Jedi was supposed to dedicate their whole lives to: keeping the peace.
Wonderful, thought (Y/n). All the Jedi practically ceased to exist, save for her and those who actually did survive the 'purge'. Not only that, but she slept through the making of history. (Y/n) glanced at Luke, eyeing him up and down curiously. His energy was strong and powerful, and it was filled with light that made (Y/n) feel so comfortable in his presence. She didn't know him all too well, yet felt an odd connection with his energy. "You are a Jedi," she said. "Like me and those before."
"Old Ben told me my father was a Jedi." (Y/n) knitted her brows together. "Old Ben?"
"Obi-wan Kenobi. He was the one who...died on the Death Star." Luke clarified. "Did you know him?" (Y/n) smiled fondly. "Yes. He was the one who found me on Mandalore. I was," (Y/n) paused, "three or four around that time. He was a wonderful man, but he did not become my master. Besides that, you said your father was a Jedi? That should not have been possible because it is against the..."
(Y/n)'s breath caught in her throat, and all the dots connected themselves on their own: the bright, blue eyes full of wonder aiming towards the galaxy, the excitement and energy in personality and aura, and lastly, the hair. "Anakin's the father, isn't he." she blurted out. Luke's eyes shot open.
"You knew my father?"
"You knew Luke's father?"
(Y/n) nodded. "Yes, I knew him. He was like a brother to me. Is your mother--?"
"What was my father like?" Luke excitedly cut in.
The smile softened on (Y/n)'s lips as she averted her gaze to the large window on the right wall. She focused on the star fighters and people rushing about, then to the deep forest covered in thick, milky fog. She savoured the upbeat energy radiating the one thing she wasn't sure she could hold fast to: hope. "Ani was one of the greatest Jedi I had ever seen. He taught me how to pilot and do a lot of practical things I wouldn't have known if I hadn't met him. Although he was a smart man, what surprised people most was how kind he was. He was passionate, and a bit unpredictable, but I...I trust him with my life."
(Y/n) knew she was saying that to comfort herself.
"Anakin is my childhood friend. I'd do anything to for him because I know he would do the same for me." Leia adjusted the sleeves on her dress with an uncertain gleam in her eyes. She looked like she wanted to say something, but a forced smile broke out onto her face and she nodded in understanding. "You two must have been close."
"He was the brother I never had."
"What's all this about a brother you never had?"
(Y/n) peered towards the threshold, where Han stood leaning against the half-open door. There was a smug smirk on his lips as he waltzed over to (Y/n)'s bedside, arms loosely folded across his chest. "I heard the Princess and Luke were in here, so I thought I might as well stop by. Did I miss anything?" Luke sarcastically chuckled. "No, besides the fact that (Y/n) knew my father and was asleep in a stasis pod for about two decades--oh, and don't forget the fact that she's Mandalorian!"
(Y/n) didn't expect Luke to be so excited about all the information she dumped on him, but then again, who wouldn't when it's about their own father? (Y/n) would have loved to hear about what her own father was like, or who he even was for that matter. Han looked taken aback. His brows raised so high that they could have flown away. "You're Mandalorian?"
"Yes."
"I did not see that coming." He breathed out a long, hollow sigh. "Did not see that coming." (Y/n)'s lips curved into a small smile. "I wouldn't have known either if Obi-wan hadn't told me." Luke knitted his brows in confusion, so (Y/n) took it upon herself to explain. "I grew up with little memory of my home planet. Obi-wan wanted to keep it that way because of all the prejudice surrounding Mandalorians. We are known for not being...the faint of heart, so when I kept pestering him about it, he decided it was time. The other younglings overheard, and ever since then, I was the odd one out. They bullied me, but that is not the point."
Han took refuge against a wall to lean on. "Seems kinda harsh for just being Mandalorian." he grumbled. Luke nodded in agreement. "Yeah, what's so bad about being Mandalorian? I think that's awesome. Better than being a farmer on Tatooine." Leia sent the two boys a pointed look. "You both really don't know anything about history. Mandalore battled with the Jedi long ago, don't you know? It resulted in a lot of death and prejudice." Her eyes were soft as she met (Y/n)'s. "It seems you really took the brunt of the hit."
"I did," (Y/n) agreed. "Besides that, what do you plan to do about the 'Death Star' and the 'Empire'? Surely you've developed a successful plan?" Leia shifted in her chair, pausing in thought. "Our plan is to blow that space station up and put an end to the Empire, but it's risky, and if it fails, we might as well kiss the Rebellion goodbye. I've seen what it's done--it blew up my home planet to pieces. We only have one shot, so it's imperative we keep everything running smoothly.
"The station is heavily shielded and carries a firepower greater than half a starfleet, so from this information, we've assumed that a small group of starfighters should, in theory, be able to penetrate its outer defence. I've analysed the plans and found a narrow lane large enough to fit a few fighters. Once they get to the thermal exhaust, if they blast it in the right direction it should reach the main reactor and blow the whole thing up." (Y/n) folded her hands together in thought. "How big is the thermal exhaust point?"
"Two meters."
She nodded her head in thought. (Y/n) had a fair amount of tough missions to accomplish in the past, this being no different. Since her master was specifically assigned to Kamino, (Y/n) had a lot of solo missions since the Republic needed people on the field. As unorthodox as it was, (Y/n) didn't mind. She had her men to keep her company, all of which were wonderful people. "That sounds like a tough one." she mumbled.
The Empire ruled the galaxy with an iron fist; they grew from the ashes of the Jedi's demise and forged a false peace between systems. From what (Y/n)'s seen and heard, they were a force to be reckoned with, and much more dangerous than the Separatists because of their tight grip upon the galaxy. (Y/n) was a peacekeeper, sure, but that didn't mean she wanted to sit around and wait. She had the skills of an experienced pilot that would go to waste if she didn't help.
There was a sense of doubt in the back of her mind. She wasn't sure if she truly knew what she was getting herself into, especially since she wasn't certain if all the information said by Leia was true. "Who is the leader of the Empire?"
"The Emperor Palpatine." Luke answered. (Y/n) ripped off the sheets and got onto her feet. Simply hearing that name made her blood boil. She had unfinished business with the man, and she was more than willing to arrest him once and for all. "In that case," she stood tall, "I'm in." Leia stood by her side, the excitement in her aura bubbling like a mug cake in a microwave. "You're not the first Jedi to join. Come on, I'll get you some new clothes." Han pushed off the wall with wide eyes. "You're actually joining Space Wizard?"
(Y/n) firmly nodded. "I have a bone to pick with Palpatine. He did something I will not ever forgive." Luke knitted his brows together. "You know him too?"
"Oh yes." There was a dark gleam in her eyes. "He tried to kill me and my best friend."
