Thinking about an AU where Jiang Yanli's "weak / mediocre cultivation" was caused by a horrific training accident when she was pretty young, in part to explore the tragedy and disability of it all and in part for the humorous "older relative casually drops wild personal lore that changes your entire perception of them" angle.

Like, Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan's firstborn child is a girl, which is not ideal in this deeply sexist world, but the sect motto is "attempt the impossible", right? It's not unheard of for female cultivators to lead sects and Yu Ziyuan wants her daughter to be the first female Jiang sect leader, to show up the cultivation world, and Jiang Fengmian isn't against the idea and wants the best for his daughter (although he probably doesn't want her to be a copy of his wife). So Jiang Yanli starts her cultivation training pretty early. There's a lot of intense pressure, a lot of expectation and projection and some arguments, and it all culminates in this poor child getting badly injured, with permanent damage to both her body and to her cultivation. It's a "no one's fault and everyone's fault" thing.

Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan quietly drop their plans for Yanli to become the sect leader and focus on a very young Jiang Cheng instead, which is easy in part because everyone expects the son to inherit anyway. A young Jiang Yanli is betrothed to the heir of the Jin Sect and this is basically never talked about ever again. General perception is that Jiang Yanli is a mediocre cultivator at best because she was born that way (she's a WOMAN, after all) and/or because her disposition is just too sweet and agreeable, and OF COURSE the son became the heir as soon as the Jiangs had a son. That's just how things work!

So, in an AU where Jiang Yanli (and Jin Zixuan?) lives and teenage Jin Ling is freaking out about some embarrassing and/or dangerous mistake on a night hunt...

Jiang Yanli, patting her son's shoulder: "It's going to be okay. You know, when I was a young child, I permanently injured myself in a training accident and could no longer become the Jiang sect leader, and it felt like the end of the world, letting everyone down, but it all worked out in the end!"

Jin Ling, whose entire 15-year-old worldview just got flipped upside-down: "...Mother?! What?!?!"

AU Idea: Everything is the same except the Mo Family runs an opera troupe and Mo Xuanyu is one of the dan performers. He is a lousy actor with a decent singing voice. He forgets lines and has breakdowns a few minutes before the show starts. The troupe only allowed him to perform because they lack members and are desperate to climb the social ladder.

When people ask why the infamous ex-performer is hanging out with Hanguang-jun, Wei Wuxian gives an excuse that he's trying to learn music cultivation because his "family" was terrible and he wants to learn from a real musician

Weirdest possible NMJ take is that he's a hypocrite. "Oh he only believes in justice when it's convenient for him" I cannot stress enough how the problem he has is the EXACT opposite of this. Nie Mingjue holds onto his values even if it makes things objectively worse both for himself and others. He will stick with his idea of justice even if it's patently not suited for the situation. "Well he expects other people to take risks that would kill them only because he can take them with no personal harm" Nie Mingjue has, out loud, with full intent to follow through, declared that he's willing to commit literal suicide if it's what his moral code recquires. Nie Mingjue thinks dying for the cause is both reasonable and morally good and is- with the saber curse- doing it himself the entire time. I fucking WISH he would prioritise his own wellbeing at literally any point in the story it would probably make him more chill and easier to talk to.

AU where Lan Wangji's mom was a canon fodder Qing Jing peak disciple (or a hallmaster?) and Shen Qingqiu came down to Gusu Lan with the full force of his anger (and Luo Binghe's anger that his private time with Shen Qingqiu was interrupted by an idiot trying to bridesnatch shizun's precious cabbage student), ready to unleash it on whoever dare hold his student hostage!

Lan Wangji Goes To Lotus Pier AU: Part 3: Enveloping Feelings.

Jin Ling wanting to see the Barbie movie and begrudgingly asking Lan Sizhui to go with him because he’s the only person who’ll probably agree and not make fun of him for it (and asking his uncle to go is way too embarrassing). Little did he know that LSZ’s grossly in-love dads would tag along with them and just when Jin Ling thinks things can’t get any more awkward, they all walk into the theatre to see a giddy Jiang Cheng huddled up alone in the back with a slurpee and popcorn 100% confident that he wouldn’t run into anyone he knows

What if Jiang Cheng developed a fear of being unconscious around people? Not a huge issue in day to day life, he's a dignified Sect leader, he doesn't fall asleep in public. Very inconvenient, when his medic tries to sedate him and he pulverizes the medical wing of Lotus Pier in fit of unforeseen panic. (Is this how they discover that Zidian given enough incentive can transform into an 80 feet snake made of lightning?) Lotus Pier's veteran doctor then has to deal with her panicking Sect leader, his first-grade spiritual weapon and his bleeding gut wound. No one is having a good time.

Jiang Cheng, once he's managed to rein Zidian back in, decides he's going to deal with this problem pragmatically.

"No sedation." He tells his doctor and the doctor on account of the time-pressing issue of the gut wound complies with this demand and then Jiang Cheng goes, well since it worked once. (And it's not like he gets grievously injured all that often.)

It all works out fine until Jin Ling (and Wei Wuxian) learns of it.
