I love Skipper's writeup of Maurice here. It shows that even the rest of the animals notice how much Maurice cares about Julien, even despite all of KJ's crazy antics.

Guys I did it... I finally did it! I finished Madagascar Art Challenge! Well in fact everyone already forgot about it... but at least I finished one of my WIP works so yeah.

I'm sorry it took so long. And its not that professional as I thought it would be. I personally grew tired over this project but to not feel I left something unfinished I decided to focus and finish this one.

I actually love Maurice's journey throughout the franchise. Initially I viewed it as really disjointed from one movie/show to the next, but once you connect the dots it all starts to come together and the true intricacies of his character come to light.

In All Hail King Julien he's Julien's brother/best friend, he's serious a lot of the time but in reality has a heart of gold, and he truly cares about his friends. He mostly puts up with Julien's antics, though he does get tried of them occasionally, e.g. Viva Mort and True Bromance.

In the first two movies he mostly just sticks by Julien's side, staying serious some of the time but also indulging in Julien's antics a bit. By this point in time he's come to discover that there's a much bigger world out there, and he seems to be "letting go", so to speak. Especially when they travel to Africa, he doesn't necessarily feel the pressure of lemur society anymore and decides to just give in and have some fun with Julien.

However, we do see his frustration come out in Madly Madagascar, and he seems to be growing weary of Julien's antics, especially when he has to dress up to help sell the love potion. He still seems to have faith in Julien, at least to some degree, but he's frustrated by Julien's increasing demands and reckless decisions.

This transitions into Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, in which we see him get upset at Julien for not pulling the switch when he was supposed to during the casino break-in. Later, he smiles at the thought of Julien potentially dying. This was probably just a brief thought that crossed his mind, but nevertheless he seemed to be happy when he believed that he was free of Julien. He still does care about him, but between Julien's rash decisions and thoughtlessness towards others, he's grown tired of his actions. He smiles not because he wants his friend to die, but because he wants to be free of the pressure and burdens placed on him by Julien.

Then, in The Penguins of Madagascar we see him thinking about quitting several times, e.g. in Gone With A Flash and Right Hand Man. Despite these thoughts of quitting, however, he always goes back to Julien. He wants to leave, but he doesn't have it in his heart to abandon his friend. He longs for the better days, yet carries out Julien's demands in the hope that Julien will appreciate him and realize his value once more. He knows Julien depends on him at this point, and wishes that Julien would engage in their comradery once more. Maurice does put his foot down occasionally, and Julien does realize the error of his ways sometime, such as in All King, No Kingdom, but ultimately he returns back to his arrogant, selfish ways.

Nonetheless, Maurice supports Julien, and has his back no matter what.

Gone in a Flash is such a cute delve into Maurice’s character and Maurice and Julien’s relationship. It’s so funny too. I love how the moral of the episode is even though Maurice can get annoyed with Julien and his attitude the penguins are way more crazy LOL
