— carina jeane: the spark (working title)

the cj series, part one

GENRE: fiction, modern fantasy, coming of age-esque, some action, some drama - and, of course, very queer.

SETTING: in a little town called harlstone, washington, where foggy mornings make every day start like it's the end of the world and where there's enough forest to swallow the town whole.

TROPES: found family, childhood friends to enemies to lovers, forced proximity and also the exact opposite of forced proximity, dark secrets, redemption, emotional scars, and more!

TAGLINE: seven people, some strangers and some not, have no choice but to work together when something sparks within them.

carina jeane castillo

a seventeen year old senior in high school, struggling with her academics and on the brink of not being able to graduate. she lives with her parents, who don't give her the time of day, and she has two older siblings - alrick, who is eight years older than her, and mariella, who is eleven years older than her. she was ten when alrick moved out, and she hasn't heard from either of them in years.

carina is empathetic and compassionate. she overthinks, she's timid, and she struggles with an obsessive, addictive kind of personality. she has no friends, no family that seems to care about her, not even a teacher that sticks up for her from time to time. despite being surrounded by people, she is horrifyingly alone.

alfred "alfie" alexander farwell

a twenty two year old who keeps debating if he should seek out his passions, of which he admittedly has none, or if he should apply for med school like his father wants him to. a people pleaser with anxiety, he works as a data entry clerk at a local dry cleaners and lives by himself in a small, scrappy apartment in the run down part of town.

he lost his mom when he was fourteen, and, in the same month, his childhood best friend, theo, switched school and moved to the other side of town. despite harlstone being so small, it was like theo moved out of state, the two of them growing distant and losing contact almost instantaneously. alfie's father is a kind, hard working man, who became distant in his grief and unknowingly put a strain on his relationship with his son, who now is willing to do almost anything to get his dad's approval. even, maybe, applying for med school.

theodore "theo" james davis

a twenty two year old gas station employee who lives in the apartment above his mom's garage. gay and not totally okay with it, theo tends to lean towards anger and frustration rather than addressing his emotions properly or communicating how he really feels. his mom, who raised him as a single mother, is a wonderful lady who tries her best to help her son despite his constant insistence towards being able to take care of himself.

after making a lot of questionable financial decisions when he was nineteen and twenty, theo is currently struggling with digging himself out of this hole he put himself in and keeps making more mistake along the way. including getting arrested for petty theft. something that he can never let his mom know about, of course, which is why, when asked to give a name and number in order to get him bailed out, he said the first person that came to mind. his old best friend that he purposefully abandoned, alfie farwell.

elena rylie ashford

one of the ashford twins, elena is freshly twenty one years old and runs the social media pages for a local, yet fairly popular, bakery. the same bakery, actually, that both her twin sister and her boyfriend, nick, works at. the only worries that elena has are what trend to incorporate into her next post and how much more she needs to save up before her and her boyfriend can get an apartment together.

elena is an optimist, but she's also a bit self righteous. in contrast, though, she's also very soft hearted and takes things very personally, and she's easily squeamish - a combo that ultimately makes her very sensitive to the world around her and the people in it, often leading her to be extra emotional about things that probably don't warrant it.

evelyn rose ashford

one of the ashford twins, evelyn is freshly twenty one years old and works in the same bakery that her twin sister runs the social media accounts for. despite hanging out with her sister and nick every day, evelyn can't help but to feel as if she's being left behind - elena is in a pretty serious relationship with someone she's saving up to move in together with and is trending weekly online for her well crafted posts, but the only thing evelyn seems to be doing right is making baked goods.

evelyn is very self deprecating, looking down on herself and comparing herself to the people around her, especially her twin. she gets jealous of the lives that other people live because she feels like she's incapable of having the happiness that they have. she's also impatient with everything other than baking - she wants things to be better and she wants them to be better now, but she also believes she doesn't deserve better at all. a restless pessimist.

walker oakleigh truett

the second youngest out of five, twenty year old walker struggles every day with standing out amongst the crowd. his family owns a local bed and breakfast called Truett Trails and he happily works as a clerk, housekeeper, and anything else they need him as. however, his siblings are all moving up and out of harlstone, accomplishing incredible things and making their parents proud. even his little sister, who just graduated high school a year early and has a full ride scholarship to the college of her dreams.

walker is a shadow in his family, the one that doesn't do much, who doesn't even really know what his own interests are because he's always tried living up to what his siblings were interested in. he's awkward and meek and almost boring in a way, not having the sense of self that one usually needs to be interesting to others.

wrenley mylah crawford

a nearly twenty three year old who lives with her friend, eleanor dulley, wrenley stays on the safe side to say the least. ever since she was little, her family was a bit unstable, losing jobs and getting evicted and starting fights at every corner of the road. the instability made her scared of the unexpected in life - she never knew what might happen next, but she knew that it wouldn't be good.

wrenley keeps herself in a bubble to avoid getting hurt, never going out unless it's to her jobs at the coffee shop across the street or the bookstore around the corner. she's paranoid and anxious, and her fear of the world leaves her ignorant to all the good things out there, convinced after a rough childhood that nothing can ever be as good as the movies make it seem.

nothing big ever happens in harlstone.

it's a small town on the coast of washington state, one often overlooked by their neighboring villages and cities. the people are quaint and quiet and peaceful, content to live their lives as they always have, as they always will. carina jeane's been here her whole life, and, unlike her older siblings, she's fairly sure she'll never get to leave. she'll be here forever, living the same day to day, until she dies.

but then, for the first time since her brother moved out when she was ten, something happens. something changes.

it starts as a spark beneath her skin - barely noticeable, but still undoubtedly there - and then it grows stronger, grows restless, grows angry and bitter and violent, until it explodes out of her.

and carina creates a storm.

Cousins are shit-talking their family members during a family event

Wohoooo! Someone who is a fan of my Simon x Leon cousin hcs!

"Hey, Simon!" Simon turned around when he heard his name called. His cousin Leon Vargas was standing next to where they were sitting, "These seats taken?"

It was beautiful midday at Cancun beach, a perfect day for a wedding. Well, that was the reason they were there. Simon's brother Julio was getting married, a day that Simon thought he would never get to see, but here they still were.

"No, all yours," Simon gestured to the seats next to him, "Where is Violetta."

"Wardrobe malfunction," Leon shook his head, "She'll be here soon. It gotta say, I am surprised to see you. I thought you'd be a groomsman."

"I was asked, don't worry. We haven't fallen out or anything," Simon chuckled, "But, I can't saddle Ambar with Ivory the whole day." Simon bounced his knee where the one-year-old Ivory was happily sitting on.

"So this is Ivory," Leon held his hand out to her, "Hello miss. Might I say, you look lovely in pink."

"Takes after her mother," Simon smiled toward Ambar who was sitting on his right and fanning herself with a fan. A month before the wedding they had found out that Ambar was in fact four weeks along on her second pregnancy. She had had couple cases of severe morning sickness. Simon had told her that she didn't need to come to the wedding but she had insisted. They had a room in the same hotel as the reception was being held so she could up and rest of necessary and Simon would be taking care of Ivory.

"Another summer, another Alvarez wedding," Leon sighed, "It feels like yesterday when you got married."

"Trust me, sometimes it does. Sometimes It feels like I had had my girls all my life."

"Simon is convinced that this one will also be a girl," Ambar said gesturing to her stomach.

"By the way, congratulations.! Leon exclaimed. The news had been shared with Simon's close family two weeks before the wedding so accidental reveals would not happen, even if Ambar was not yet showing.

"I'm here, I am not late am I?" Violetta Castillo suddenly ran up to them and sat next to Leon.

"Just in time."

"Good. I had to go with the backup shoes." Violetta shook her head and them nodded her head toward Simon and Ambar. "Oh hi Simon, Ambar. And this must be Ivory.

"We are gonna need make sure she doesn't steal the show," Simon laughed, "Otherwise the bride will hate us." Ivory way to small to have been part of the wedding party. Valeria was going to be the flower girl and her little brother Garen was the ring bearer. Julio's bride, Lina, didn't have any children in her family.

"Just don't let Aunt Mariella close to her." Leon remarked.

"Don't worry, I won't."

"She is the worst."

"I know. We didn't invite her to our wedding. I though I'd never need to see her again."

"Who are you talking about?" Violetta questioned.

"She is a cousin of our mother's," Leon explained, "A full nightmare."

"She's Julio's godmother." Simon continued, "She basically believes that is you are not a lawyer or a doctor, you are basically unemployed. This is especially the case with the entertainment industry. We better not let it slip what we're all doing."

"She hates pop musicians," Leon rolled his eyes.

"If I need to talk to her today, I will just keep repeating that Ambar's a lawyer and that my friend is a high-ranking engineer at the Castillo corporations and their daughter is our god-daughter. Maybe that should make her forget to ask what is my job." Simon explained.

"Good idea," Leon laughed, "I have Castillo's daughter here, so Vilu can serve as the distraction."

"Leon! I don't know anything about engineering, that won't work." Violetta gave Leon the murder glare. "You know I shudder to think of the day the whole company is mine, you know, once Dad dies."

“¡Mamá, Mamá!” Mariella gritó excitada en cuanto cerraste la puerta de casa en la que vivías con Dean. Después de un largo fin de semana cazando con Sam, escuchar la vocecita de tu hija hacía brotar flores en tu corazón. Dejaste caer las bolsas y te agachaste justo cuando apareció en la entrada y saltó a tus brazos.

La pequeña de cinco años te echó los bracitos al cuello y te apretó tan fuerte como pudo. Hacía cinco años hubieras jurado que no había nadie en el mundo que pudiera abrazar tan bien como lo hacía Dean, pero entonces nació Mariela y te demostró lo equivocada que estabas.

“Te he echado de menos, mi pequeña Ella.”

“Yo también te he echado de menos, Mamá.”

Pasaste la mano por su pelo y volviste la cabeza para darle un beso en la sien. “¿Te ha cuidado bien Papá mientras yo no estaba?”

Soltó una risita nerviosa y miró hacia atrás, hacia donde Dean estaba apoyado en el muro mirándote con esa sonrisilla que te volvía loca. “¡Papá y yo nos hemos divertido!”

Había algo en su voz que te decía que estaba escondiendo algo. Miraste a tu hija y a tu marido con los ojos hechos dos rendijas. “Oh, ¿de verdad? ¿qué habéis hecho toda la semana?”

“Ya sabes, hemos jugado con la plastilina y los legos. Hemos ido al parque un par de veces…” Dean se separó de la pared y se acercó hacia ti.

Levantaste a Mariella y apoyando su peso en tu cadera aceptaste el beso rápido que te dio Dean antes de volver a posar los ojos en tu hija. “¿Qué más habéis hecho?”

“Es un secreto” dijo con su risilla nerviosa, clavó los ojos en los de su padre y con otra risilla nerviosa bajó la mirada de nuevo.

“¿Dean?”

Fingió hacer cremallera sobre sus labios, lo que hizo que Mariella se riera tanto que tuvo que esconder su cara en tu cuello.

“Ella, por qué no le enseñas a Mamá el castillo de Lego que hemos construido?” Parecía muy orgulloso con el nuevo tema de conversación y te miró. “Los dinosaurios de juguete lo están atacando.”

Tu hija se revolvió hasta que la dejase en el suelo. Te agarró con sus pequeñas manitas y comenzó a tirar de ti hacia el pasillo que llevaba hacia el cuarto de juegos. “Mr. Wiggles es el Rey, por supuesto, y no le gustan los dinosaurios. Le asustan. Así que todos mis Pequeñas Mascotas le están protegiendo. Son muy buenas.”

“Seguro que lo son,” le contestaste tratando de pensar en lo que fuera que tu hija y tu marido te estaban ocultando. ¿Qué podía ser lo que Dean no quería que supieras? ¿Helado en cada comida? ¿Sin hora de acostarse?

Entonces entraste en el cuarto de juegos y que quedaste clavada por el shock.

Cuando te fuiste hacía una semana había una cantidad normal de juguetes en esa habitación. Lo suficiente para que Mariella no se aburriera nunca. Ahora, sin embargo, no había una solo sitio en esa habitación que no tuviera algún juguete encima.

Y justo en el centro se levantaba un castillo de Lego gigante, suficientemente grande para que Mariella cupiera dentro y jugara con sus animales de peluche.

“¿Dean?”

Se acercó por detrás y te abrazó por la cintura, apoyando su barbilla sobre tu hombro. “¿Se me olvidó mencionar que también fuimos de compras? Estaban con las rebajas de después de navidad y… bueno… La Estrella de la Muerte estaba a mitad de precio, y justo en esa esquina estaban los sobreros de vaquero y los caballos de juguete estaban prácticamente regalados. Por supuesto Mariella vio todos los juguetes de Moana y tuve que comprárselo.”

“¿O tuviste que comprártelo?” preguntaste aún en shock con todos esos nuevos juguetes. En serio, había por lo menos tres veces más juguetes de los que había cuando te marchaste. “Ya sabemos que te gusta esa película más que a nosotras.”

“No, eran definitivamente para Ella—“

Honestamente, si hubieras estado en su lugar, tú también te hubieras vuelto loca con todo tan rebajado. Pero ya que no habías sido tú a la que se le había ido la cabeza con todo aquello, tenías el derecho de hacerte la enfadada y nunca perdías una oportunidad de fingir que estabas enfadada con tu marido. Después de todo, nunca te enfadabas de verdad con él, así que te sentías estafada.

Te giraste y le diste un golpe en el hombro. “Deja de malcriar a tu hija, tontín!”

“¿Tontín?” ni siquiera se encogió. Sabía que no estabas enfadada en lo más mínimo. De hecho, en lugar de ponerse a la defensiva, tiró de ti hasta que quedaste juste delante de su cara. “Si estuvieras de verdad enfadada, no hubieras usado ese mote cariñoso, cielo.”

“Mierda,” murmuraste. “Lo recordaré la próxima vez.”

Sonrió y se inclinó para besarte. Incluso después de seis años casados, los besos de Dean aún enviaban pequeñas descargas eléctricas a todo tu cuerpo.

“¡Mamá! ¡Papá! Mr. Wiggles requiere vuestra presencia en la sala del trono!” Mariella gritó desde su sito dentro del castillo.

Te separaste del beso y le sonreíste juguetona a tu marido. “Bueno, ya que has comprado todos estos juguetes, deberíamos jugar con ellos.”

Dean se agachó y recogió un sombrero vaquero que te puso en la cabeza. “Después de usted, Señora.”
