coz nah I had the WEIRDEST DREAM EVER. So I’m in school and for some reason the Chainsaw murderer is on the loose, right so I’m in class and my class teacher is the same, the students are all the same, HECK even the seating arrangement is the same. So I’m eyeing my crush coz eye candy baby and the teacher catches me staring and asks me about it so I say there’s a giant dead bug on his table and THERE WAS and then the lights went out and the teacher asked me and my crush to make charts for the classroom about the map of India and then we were arguing with the teacher that a survey and a map are different because one of them was green??? Then the Murderer Alarm TM goes off and he and I are partners to protect each other so we grab our bags and run but he’s teamed up with his friends and abandons me. then the scene shifts to my suburban house in the town and my school bus is standing there and I get in I see my best friend @kaiserkisser just sitting there with MY CLASSMATES? chatting away then she gets up and murders everyone in sight except for me then I find my crush/ safety partner and then we run away and fall into Maldivian waters? and swam into a stilt house and were adopted by an old lady
bro what the fuck

An intro before I get to it
My name is (XXXX). I am a 22 year old (as of '18) male figuring out what the hell I have done with my life.
I was born in a Maldivian local island. Not a poor family, okay okay parents (if u know what I mean). Growing up my dad wasn't around us, as at that time, people had to move from one island to another for work. My dad was a carpenter, he used to travel a lot for work from one island to another, me and my older 3 brothers and my 2 younger brothers don't get much to see him. We were living with my mom. The 3 older brothers don't get along that much with Mom and rest of the family, even with Dad. Always fighting and with me as well, the relationship wasn't good. My mom is a house wife. I grew up with my mom.
I don't know whether it was fate that made it NOT so good for me. I got most of the stuff that I wanted, got a good education, they raised me right , at least I thought it was...etc.. On the other side, I had depression.
I wasn't allowed to go outside the house after 2100, had no friends, always studying at house or doing something else. One day I got sick of it and I snapped at mom and she started letting me out of the cage a little. I started seeing a part of the world for what it is. The only friends to play with is the neighbors, which do not had any Male friends, all were girls. To sum up, I grew up in a women's community. I did what they did, ate what they ate, played what they played, wore what they wore sometimes. That's how I got my feminine side ( Not so much .... a little 😁)
"Should have said before, as Maldivian's we are Muslims"
At the age of 14, I got bullied, teased, harassed, whatever u mention it happened to me for being a little feminine. They teased about how I walk, how I wore clothes, how I spend times with all the ladies... Etc.. I thought if I get a girlfriend, they will stop it, was wrong. I asked a girl in class out, all I got was from her, quote: "Seriously, u & me, u should go kill yourself".
So I shut myself out, wasn't going out, did miss some classes by lying to mom, wasn't talking that much. Suicidal thoughts were in my mind 24/7.
Days went by, one day I saw my brothers computer connected to internet at his room ( at that time it was a big deal, Data & shit was expensive). The opened tab was of YouTube. I saw a clip of someone crying. I clicked it, it was a women crying, didn't know who she was. Turns out she was "Ellen DeGeneres". She was crying about the dog taken away from a child. I realized if she is crying over a dog taken away by someone, what else is she. I was looking for a chance when will i get access to Internet, every time I get a chance i search about her. So I got to know who she is and started following her and stayed strong. She is my role model. "I still haven't got a chance to watch a full episode of her show, all I see is clips from YouTube". She is a gift given by God to mankind to show how people should live in this damaged world. I love her so much and have a dream of meeting her one day. So followed her steps and carried on hoping it will be okay. Till now as well. It helped a lot at that time.
So I completed grade 10 and went capital city to Join a course. I was staying at a dad's friend house by paying rent. As the newbie in the building, the neighbors were very friendly and that's where it started.
The apartments in the building was given to the teachers of capital city schools by Gov.t, I got to know a Dhivehi teacher ( Local Language Teacher). We started communicating and he invited for dinner. That was going on for like a month. I didn't realize what I was getting into. One night we met at the hallway and he said to help him with his laundry, "come to the top floor to gimme a hand with the laundry". I never went to the laundry and the top floor. So I followed him.
So I went and suddenly, he locked the door and switched the lights off and he grabbed me and started kissing me. He was a big guy and I couldn't get out, he was holding me very tight. I didn't scream and he said it's going to be fine. Trust between me and him was built like a week ago & this happened after a week. So I stayed calm and we kissed and you know the rest. Wasn't expected at all. Was terrified.
After like an hour he let me go and I went running back to my room and was crying like hell. No one knew about it. I tried to forget about it and like within a week time I heard he was dead, I was shocked. Heard he had a heart attack. I was thinking about it for weeks. I couldn't forget about it.
As a Muslim I knew Homosexuality was wrong at our religion and was definitely not accepted in Maldives. It is banned in Maldives and is punishable by imprisonment by Maldives Law.
I got the idea that Ellen might be a help, I was going through the YouTube channel and saw something else terrifying. I saw the case of " Mathew Shepard", But was chilled the way Ellen telecasted it and she said "It is okay to be GAY". (Take note people, IT IS OKAY TO BE GAY). It gave me comfort watching her, following her and I got through it and I somehow forgot about what went with the teacher.
Another night I went away for a walk to clear my mind around 2300. I was around the harbor and saw 2 man having sex. Like fully naked and doing it like hell inside a speedboat. I was staring at them for minutes, they saw me and I ran away.
I couldn't stop thinking about it and I started seeing these .....
STAY TUNED 😁

language learning update 15th of June 2018
Not much language learning has been happening lately because of exams at school and other stress related to school. However, I have still managed to study a little.
At school I learn Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, so I get to study those languages there. Spanish is still a lot of fun to learn, and without bragging too much about it, I can reveal that I finished this year with top grades in Spanish, something I am very proud of. I have never had such good grades in Spanish before, and just that gives me a ton of motivation to continue learning it! In Mandarin Chinese, however, my grades have gone a little down. This is due to my recent lack of motivation in learning it. We recently got a new teacher, and in my opinion, she is not the best. The Chinese classes used to be fun and intriguing, but now they are all quite boring. All we do is read up Chinese texts loudly, and literally nothing else. I just wish there were some more spice to the lessons like there used to be. But next year we’re getting a new teacher, so my hopes are still up!
When it comes to Finnish, I have been studying a little at home. Not much though. Apart from studying, I have been reading news articles in Finnish, and found myself starting to understand more and more, which is very exciting! I hope that I will get the opportunity to intensively study Finnish this summer break, like I did last summer.
I haven’t studied any Armenian nor Icelandic lately, but I did watch a documentary in Icelandic yesterday with my family. I understood more Icelandic than I thought I would. I also hope I’ll get to learn more Icelandic this summer. Armenian I’d have to put on a hold for a while, as I can’t seem to ever get started properly learning. It could be the lack of motivation, or just that I have other things I want to do which are more exciting at that moment. But I will learn more Armenian soon, I promise!
And now to a language that may is a little unexpected; Greenlandic. Yes, I have officially started studying Greenlandic for real now. I started on Wednesday (I skipped Chinese class so that I could learn some Greenlandic oops), and I am already able to construct simple sentences and introduce myself. I will probably be studying Greenlandic for a long while, probably till I reach a point where I am happy with my achievements in Greenlandic, which are to get a decent understanding of the language. Greenlandic is very exotic to me, which makes it even more exciting (and hard) to learn!
Other langauges that have been in sensor of interest lately are Welsh, Irish, Manx, the Kven language, and Maldivian. I haven’t learned anything from these languages yet, just read a bit about them and they are all very interesting to me!

Reticence of Speaking in a Maldivian ESL Classroom Causes and Solution
by Suhana Abdul Shakoor "Reticence of Speaking in a Maldivian ESL Classroom: Causes and Solution"

Although teachers adopt various approaches in their teaching to improve the language skills of the students, reticent behaviour of the students in speaking lessons often frustrates teachers. Hence, the present study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the reticent behaviour of students in ESL classrooms, strategies used by Maldivian students to cope with speaking anxiety and how teachers attempt to alleviate the problem of reticence in ESL classroom. To fulfill this aim, the present paper addresses the following questions 1 what do Maldivian students and teachers notice as the factors contributing the reticence in speaking in ESL classrooms 2 What strategies do Maldivian learners use to cope with speaking anxiety 3 What strategies do Maldivian teachers adopt to effectively cope with student’s reticent behaviour of speaking in ESL class The data was taken from seven participants four teachers and three students through face to face interview. Further, classroom observations was done to gain more information about the behviour being studied. The research findings showed that different social psychological factors, fluency factors and cognitive factors make the learners to be reticent in ESL classroom. Furthermore, students employ various strategies, such as avoidance strategy, seeking help from friends, using mother tongue, writing and rehearsing what they want to say in order to cope with the problem of reticence. The findings also showed that teachers attempt to alleviate the problem by altering the teaching methods and building a stress free classroom environment for the students. Surprisingly, the results showed that teachers give less importance to speaking skill as it not tested in exam. Therefore, it is recommended to include speaking in when Maldivian students do IGCSE exam.

Maldives twitter last week #1
Here are some interesting things Maldivians talked about on twitter last week. A long term collection could be very useful for reflection and analysis.
 1. @reallynattu creates satirical voting app
Since this has leaked and people got a glimpse of this super duper top secret extremely sensitive totally legit app we've been working on. So releasing #VoteApp for public use. Tweet your features to add to this. iOS: https://t.co/yZYEepIJ3i Android: https://t.co/8W1jtkTwpz pic.twitter.com/EGbczx12rw
— Nattu (@reallynattu) March 7, 2018
An English translation:
The top text reads "Voteapp". Next to it is a drop down menu that says "Presidential election".
Below that the title says "Candidates". Below this the same portrait of current president Abdulla Yameen is displayed five times in a row, giving the voter a wide range of candidates to vote for.
Below this is the presidents full name, "Yameen Abdul Gayoom". The president doesn't use this version in his campaigning or current activities perhaps to distant himself from his brother Maumoon. Next to this the text reads "The driving force behind the progress that the Maldives is experiencing".
After this is a section where the voter decides what kind of reward they want for voting. They are given a choice of money (from well wishers), employment (a coordinator position), or a flat from Hulhumale'. In the mockup the voter has chosen money, and the options for collecting it (deposit, cheque, or a letter delivered to your residence) are below. As the voter has selected the first option, a field to enter their account number and reward amount sits next to the Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Bank logos.
At the very bottom the text reads "press to vote", with the subtext "I swear to god that I won't change my vote". The word used for "my" is "alhugandu", a relic of the Maldivian caste system, which is the self depreciating word one must use for oneself when talking to someone who demands respect; whether it be your elders, a teacher, or certain dictators. The literal translation of "alhu" is slave.
 2. @paperclippenny and @legacyofpain attend mandatory marriage classes
Marriage class: https://twitter.com/legacyofpain/status/971438002890203136
"no anal!!" - Marie #marriageclass

Marie seems to be one of their tutors.
Marie just called genitals "shameful organs". Wow, I call them fun parts. This is bleak. #marriageclass
— Executive Hobo 🎈 (@legacyofpain) March 7, 2018
A word for genitals in Dhivehi is "ladhuvethi gunavan", literally "shameful organ".
I'm pretending I'm watching a play. This is a haunting one man show about a man who has given up on life and is clutching on to religion because otherwise his life has no meaning. #marriageclass

What we are trying to is eliminate gender segregated spaces and normalize eating at Sai Hotaa for women. Ultimate goal is for women to be able to do this without the need for ‘gatu’. #OccupySaiHotaa @KeevveMV

Hi @Mihaarunews, The article states that I was leading the movement, which is inaccurate. The #Keevve movement and #OccupySaiHotaa are both lead by @NihayaAhmed, @ashahamy and me as explained over the phone. Please amend the article to reflect this.

4. Some men aren't too happy about it
Feminism is beautiful. But why occupy sai hotaa? Why not propose separate sai hotas for women? Men need the privacy to talk the "men talk" at saihota. Likewise, women. Issue-based agendas would facilitate women empowerment instead of trying to create a resemblance of men & women

Peeing in a bottle: Man’s greatest achievement? This is the best that Salafi propagandist Siru “Arts” could come up with to mock the #OccupySaiHotaa movement.
The black text on top reads: "This year the women's groups went to the tea houses next year (they'll go) fishing"
The red bottom text reads: “Next year - trying to pee into a thola bottle far away without utilising any devices”
On the bottom left the silhouette peeing is labeled "men" and the female rage comic face is lablled "women".
Today I've learned a lot. Thanks all who opposed nicely. This needs to move forward. At the same, time addressing other related issues are important. I've already decided to join the #OccupySaiHotaa movement. #twitterlessons

 5. Maldives celebrates International Women's Day 2018

Just got called a "feminazi". Because I've this weird belief that women's bodies are their own business. It's radical, I know. That's why they liken me & my kind to nazis, because believing in female self-determination is roughly equivalent to genocide. 🙄
— F 🎈❓ (@_faz_) March 8, 2018
This #InternationalWomensDay let’s not forget LGBTIQA Dhivehi women who do not have the privilege of being visible, let alone freedom to be. We exist. Claims of intersectional allegiance fall short of true solidarity when our existence is not acknowledged. #ALLWomen

6. Maldives telecom company Dhiraagu gives police full access to opposition activist @Thayyib's SIM
Dhiraagu finally admits they gave police access to @Thayyib’s SIM. Even if it was to honour a court order, why did @Dhiraagu not have the basic courtesy to inform the service recipient of this action? Why did it keep issuing vague statements denying the accusation? https://t.co/G5PfGFW1rV

There was no lawful purpose. Since @Dhiraagu gave @PoliceMv the means to impersonate @thayyib they aided in the commission of a crime: identity fraud. A cloned SIM's real use is not to intercept messages, but to appear to others as the real one, i.e. to commit identity fraud. pic.twitter.com/PF06AOeNLO

A sad day, but I see NO other option than to quit @Dhiraagu after 19 years. I wonder why @dhiraagu did NOT appeal like @Apple did on maintaining customers’ trust & their integrity.. Especially knowing the Corruption Index Level of our State.@Mirshan :(@OoredooMaldives :)
— Ashraf Ayu (@Ashraf_Ayu) March 8, 2018
What @Dhiraagu did was a crime of the same magnitude as issuing an ID Card/Passport bearing @thayyib‘s photo & particulars for someone else to impersonate him. What an institutionalized criminal activity!#SIMcloningCompany pic.twitter.com/1fWj6GyEh6

Students from Wuhan Traveling Globally for Holidays
International students remaining in Wuhan, China — where the government has issued a lockdown to avoid the spread of the deadly coronavirus — report being provided surgical masks and being asked to stay indoors.
“As I write this message, the school is on lockdown as the school authorities are putting in place measures to protect the remaining foreign students on campus,” emailed an international student who identified himself as @Vince Vela Nova from Ghana who is doing a post-graduate degree program in land resource management.“
There are just a handful of Chinese students around as most of them have gone back home to celebrate the Chinese New Year,” he wrote. “This morning the international office provided the students with surgical masks and entreated every one of us to stay indoors.”
Medical students from India training in Wuhan have been advised to stay home and away from their hospital workplace, according to the Hindustan Times. While about 600-700 medical students from India study in Wuhan, most have returned home for the winter-New Year’s break from school.
A 45-year-old teacher from India working at an international school has been admitted to the hospital with flu-like symptoms, reported the Telegraph.
The outflow of international students to points around the globe for winter break has caused rapid anxiety.
"My niece is stuck in Wuhan China, with airport closed she can't travel to India," tweeted @harinatha with a video showing a van blocking a roadway. "Please get Indian citizens safely back to India till this virus crisis is over? Few more Indian students, not knowing what to do! University Roads blocked, Please help!!"

"There are Maldivian students in Wuhan [who] need immediate attention as the virus is spreading so fast,” tweeted @Anjumaa on Monday, Jan. 20, imploring the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives to “take an action.”

Friends in Wuhan "are scared of how fast the virus has spread & they also fear it will mutate & affect students when they get back from the school break," tweeted Yarella Espinoza, an English professor in Osorno, Chile.
I've got a friend living in Wuhan. He'll stay at home for 10 days; he already bought groceries & supplies & many ppl are doing the same. They're scared of how fast the virus has spread & they also fear it will mutate & affect students when they get back from the school break.
— Yarella Espinoza (@yarellacraft) January 21, 2020
Wuhan is a university center in China, with more than 30 universities, and international students from around the world. In the U.S., Chinese students comprise more than 33% of the 1,095,299 international students studying there.
At the University of Illinois, which has more than 6,000 Chinese students among its nearly 14,000 international students, the health center has begun screening students who "come for care presenting with respiratory illness, with and without a travel history to areas with confirmed cases of coronavirus infections."
"All appropriate students will be masked and those of particular concern will be masked and then seen in an isolation room," according to Chanelle Thompson, the university's chief communications officer.
Neighboring University of Indiana hosts more than 10,000 international students, according to the Institute for International Education. Amber Denney, assistant direction of strategic communications at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), said the school is following Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and WHO guidelines.
"We are evaluating the situation," Denney said. "No students are scheduled to travel to that area but we have no clear assessment of students who have traveled and been to that region." Health officials are at the ready, she said, to respond to anyone with flu-like respiratory symptoms.
Columbia University in New York City hosts nearly 16,000 international students — the fourth-largest population of international students in the U.S. — and issued an advisory to its community and says it is monitoring the situation.
Jennifer Stevens, Ph.D., and interim Associate Dean for the College of Visual and Performing Arts at James Madison University, said her school has postponed an exchange program.
"We just can't send them abroad in good faith at the moment," she told VOA. Emails and calls to other universities with large international and Chinese student populations were not returned.
Panic over the potential spread of the virus reached suburban Washington, as residents and parents took issue with the Fairfax County Public School system's hosting a group of Chinese middle-school students.
"Allowing 20-ish Chinese’s exchange students of Yichang, 214 miles from Wuhan-epic center or coronavirus outbreak to come to Longfellow MS this afternoon completely irresponsible! If anyone got the virus, it’ll be *on* you!" tweeted @FairfaxNova to the superintendent of schools in the county.

Writing on Saturday, Jan. 18, Weijia Cai (@cai_weijia) compared China's response to the coronavirus to the outbreak of the severe-acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus there in 2003.
"Comparing with the outbreak of SARS in 2003, when I was a graduate student for medical virology program in Wuhan University, China obtained great achievements in many fields of dealing with a novel virus. I believe my hometown will defeat this outbreak. Bless Wuhan!"
The CDC started a "public health entry screening" on Friday, Jan. 17, at San Francisco (SFO), New York (JFK), and Los Angeles (LAX) airports and said it will expand that to Atlanta (ATL) and Chicago (ORD) airports.
"This is a rapidly evolving situation," they wrote on their website.
The CDC has reported that cases of the virus have spread to Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and South Korea.
CDC has updated information about an outbreak of novel #coronavirus in China with cases exported to Thailand and Japan. See new information for healthcare providers and laboratorians on who to test and what specimens to take to detect #2019-nCoV. https://t.co/6pRrNuYAnipic.twitter.com/qa7EQXVcwE

Ghost Woman or ހަންޑި އަންހެނާ
In Maldivian tradition, There is always a superstition story surrounding a specific island.
this story is from what my grandmother told me when i was younger, it was the '50s or the '60s, and there was this man, his name was Mohammed Didi. he was well known in the small community as a teacher for the little children, teaching Quran,Islam and sometimes Maths. He also liked to go on walks in the evening at 6 or 7 o'clock between the night prayers. people asked him why he would go out at that time especially between night prayer,he said it was peaceful and he liked the atmosphere.
One night,he went out for his usual walk and he greeted some of his neighbors down the road. Then he decided to go into the wooded area for a few mins, Once he entered through,he FELT something walk behind him, but he didn't think anything of it, so he moved on. as he was walking, listening to the sound of the ocean and watching the tree leaves sway back and forth, it was a calm, windy night.
he kept on walking until...he saw IT . The HANDI or GHOST in the form of a woman, who walks around with an ominous glare to her. She will kill anyone including small children,She was only a few meters infront of him, with her back towards him, he slowly moved backwards and tried to get out but she heard him, and she turned around and chased after him. he managed to get back to his house.
From then on, he swore to never go out at night ever again.

Manik jokes at expense of senior woman: what's so funny?
New Post has been published on http://funnythingshere.xyz/manik-jokes-at-expense-of-senior-woman-whats-so-funny/
Manik jokes at expense of senior woman: what's so funny?
First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim took a tour of Thaa atoll last week, as part of her husband’s reelection campaign for the upcoming presidential elections.
She was accompanied by a number of senior government officials and ruling party lawmakers, including actor-turned-politician Moosa “Reeko” Manik.
One of the biggest headlines from this trip was Manik’s ‘joke’ proposing Naeema “Naeematha” Mohamed as the Joint Opposition’s presidential candidate for the elections. Anything for a laugh, right?
MP Moosa Manik with MDP leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed
Manik started out his political career with opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, and had remained ‘loyal’ to it till his expulsion from the party in 2014- for violating multiple whip-lines issued. Despite this, parliament only removed him from MDP’s parliamentary group in February 2017.
Not long after, he officially joined the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). This was to no one’s surprise as he had been taking a pro-President Abdulla Yameen stance ever since. He officially joined PPM on 11th July, 2017.
MP Moosa Manik joined PPM on 11th July 2017
Less than 48 hours later, the Supreme Court declared that that MPs will lose their seats if they ‘switch parties, quit or is expelled after winning on a political party ticket’, taking effect from 13th to July 2017. While this was to be until the parliament enacted an anti-defection law, parliament in March 2018 passed the anti-defection law to be put into effect retroactively from July 13, 2017.
It is not really clear on whether Manik would have been unseated had he joined PPM after the said date, there are so many loopholes in these new laws, mostly favoring those in power.
Anyway, we are not here to talk about that. Rather, about Manik’s joke. There’s nothing else to call it but a joke, but what was so funny about it? That Naeema is a senior or that she is a woman?
According to Naeema, she is around 60 years of age, however many believe her to be much older. It is not uncommon for a Maldivian to be uncertain of her birth date, happens more frequently than one would expect as birth dates were not well documented in the past. Hence, age-wise Naeema is eligible to run, as the age limit for presidency and the vice presidency is 30 to 65 years. Sure, she might not be educated or have anything else required for the post besides the fact that she is a Maldivian, but Manik has shown interest in running for presidency as well, hasn’t he?
Then there is the factor about her being a woman, which leads to the age-old argument whether ‘the inferior sex’ can actually be the president or head of a state in Islam? Maldives is a hundred percent Muslim country, and the current administration’s slogan right now is ‘my religion, my country’- using religion mostly as a tool to defend those in power. So, can a woman be a leader?
In the past two decades we have seen three practicing Muslim women come to power; Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan and Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh.
There are verses in the Quran that acknowledge men’s leadership over women, such as:
Men are in charge of women, because God has made some excel (faddala) some of the others
They (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in kindness, and men are a degree above them
While conservative Muslims take this as women ‘should never been in charge of men’, modernists believe that the verses ‘deal with conjugal relations and not with the status of each sex in society at large’.
While this argument goes much deeper, there is a reference to female leadership in the Quran- the story of Bilqis, the Queen of Sheba.
“The Quran uses no terms that imply that the position of ruler is inappropriate for a woman. On the contrary, the Quranic story of Bilqis celebrates both her political and religious practices”. However, her story has failed to convince people of the ability of women to govern wisely.
Then there are those critics, of women being effective leaders, that also express concerns over the effects of menstruation, pregnancy and menopause on a woman’s composure and behavior. And of course, there is that factor that raising the children is ‘strictly’ the mother’s duty.
Unlike many countries, Maldives has always welcomed females in the work field, with many filling senior level posts at offices, and even the government. Women have also been seen at the centre of various movements in the country, at different levels. Naeema Mohamed is one of them, she is seen at almost every opposition demonstration and has been arrested a number of times. However, she is back on the field the next day, fighting for the people’s rights. For what she believes in. Doing what she can- everything she can- for her country.
Now, had Manik sincerely praised her work this might have been a different story. But what he said was more a mockery.
The First Lady was there in attendance when Manik made the comment. Women’s empowerment and well-being of senior citizens have been two of her ‘biggest causes’ during her husband’s tenure. But what can she do? She has had to live through worse comments by her husband.
First couple, Abdulla Yameen and Fathimath Ibrahim. Photo: President’s Office
At one point the president had made a comment that ‘you can see the developments made in the country in the past 30 years, unless autistic’.
At an event in May 2017, he said ‘I have to say that I know everyone, especially all men, go to Bangkok. And certainly, the women they get there are not hiley [for free]’.
At a different event later that month, he said “the solution to the social issues we have in the Maldives, is for Maldivians to get an opiate that allows them to forget these issues’, adding that ‘without a content youth, our country will not go forward.”
So, the first lady has had a lot of practice dealing with powerful, ignorant men. She is seen traveling to various islands for the campaign, as well as taking the fall for a lot the government’s ‘shady’ businesses. Maybe Manik, or anyone else from the ruling party, should propose her as PPM’s candidate for 2023!
There is the woman
My mother, sister, daughter
She stirs in me the most sacred emotions
How can the holy book regard her unworthy
This most noble, beautiful creature
Surely the learned have erred
To read this in the Quran.

Meet the First Solo Female Traveller from the Maldives!
When I first met Niuma (Mariyam Niuma), she was renting a small house on a local island in the Maldives, spending her days surfing in the warm waves of the Indian Ocean. As she spoke of her laidback life, I began yearning to live out my hideaway island dream too.
We were at the World Travel Writers Conference in the Maldives, where I was speaking on a travel panel about storytelling. We stole a few moments to chat about our recent adventures and the similar battles we had fought at home to chase our dream of travelling the world.
But I never truly understood her battles until I spent a couple of weeks living in a small guesthouse on Maalhos, a local Maldivian island, a few months later. Unlike “resort islands” – private islands occupied by a tourist resort – local islands offer an intimate glimpse into daily life in the Maldives. It was on Maalhos that I realized that most Maldivian women, including young girls, are expected to fully cover up their bodies even under the hot tropical sun; that their ambitions are often limited to becoming teachers, though most of them only end up fulfilling the duties of a wife; that even though the pristine blue ocean is in their backyard, they are shy (and often not permitted) to join the boys and men to learn to swim, surf, snorkel or dive.
Where she feels most connected – the Indian Ocean! Photo: Mariyam Niuma
So I had to meet Niuma again – the first female solo traveller, couchsurfer and female surf photographer from the Maldives – over drinks in Male, speak to her about her unconventional life of travel and share her inspiring story with you:
An adventurous soul:
Niuma’s love affair with the ocean began as a little kid, when on long ferry rides from Male to her father’s island village, she imagined herself as a mermaid! She has travelled solo across Southeast Asia, crewed a sailboat from Malaysia to Thailand, taken surf lessons in Morocco, crossed 96 islands on foot in the Maldives and honed her surf photography skills to become Maldives’ first female surf photographer.
When I reached out to her for this story, she was sailing on a 45-foot catamaran on a two day adventure from the Maldives to India!

Funding her travels: Work, save, travel, repeat:
Her tryst with travel began in 2004, when she won return tickets to Colombo on Emirates. She was so stoked by the win that she decided to fight her fears and go solo to Sri Lanka. She loved it, and eventually saved enough money to move to Sri Lanka for college, where she began experimenting with Couchsurfing on her travels – becoming the first Couchsurfer from the Maldives!
Upon returning home, she scored short-term work gigs of six months to a year – with NGOs, environmental organisations and high-end resorts – and saved up what she earned to travel in between. She took courses in surfing and diving, and invested in professional gear for surf photography. This paved the way for her to live at surf spots in Pondicherry, Morocco, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, where she would learn surfing in exchange for her work as a photographer – and gradually begin earning a living as a surf guide and surf photographer.

Challenging societal conventions:
Try to get out of your comfort zone as much as possible. Try many things and fail many times. Try to identify your why. ~ Niuma
Back when she first travelled out of the Maldives, Niuma said she felt like she somehow attracted people who supported her dreams. But the more she travelled, the more she realised how different she was; everyone she grew up with was getting married and having babies and doing ‘normal’ things.
Apart from the burden that society placed on her, being in the surf industry and working as a surf photographer and guide, came with many challenges. She didn’t feel accepted in the local community for a long time. But her work built her reputation, and gradually people warmed up to the idea of supporting a Maldivian woman who was making it on her own.

On fears/challenges and conquering them:
I think it all comes down to our fears. After I moved out of home in 2011, I realised that I carried around a lot of fears – about relationships, failures, living on my own, society’s expectations – all which I had to face and let go. ~ Niuma
Niuma had been wanting to dive and surf since she was a kid, but it was only at age 28 that she learnt how to swim! She couldn’t let her eye glasses get in the way of her dream, so she saved up for a laser surgery.
She pushed her comfort zone to finally learn surfing at 32, despite the fear of getting injured in a foreign country as she travelled on her own. But going for a wave felt incredibly liberating to her, even if she got injured while surfing in Morocco and had to nurse herself back to health.

Her message for those who have a dream:
Niuma: “Why do you want a certain thing in life? I want a life of adventure because it makes me feel alive instead of just living a life where you get up to go to work and that’s it, or you go on a holiday once a year and that’s it. There is a whole world out there, full of amazing experiences. Make connections, learn new skills on the internet (so many free resources), ask questions from people who are doing it. It doesn’t take a lot of money to follow your dream. You just need to put in a little effort and chase it proactively. Save up and start small. Your confidence will build for bigger things.
Make a list of things you want to do in life and tick them off one by one because one day you will wake up and wonder why you haven’t done anything with your life. Do something towards your dream today.”

Blog Announcement: A new series featuring solo travellers from across Asia
Back in 2011, when I first began to travel solo, it felt like a lonely space. I wondered if I was the only one crazy enough to venture out on my own – especially as a 20-something Indian woman. But over time, I’ve been lucky enough to cross paths with solo travellers from around the world, but especially from Asia. Yet in the online travel arena, non-white solo travellers continue to be a minority.
In this new monthly blog series, I hope to share with you inspiring stories of solo travellers from across Asia, especially women. Growing up in protective families and a conservative society, our battles are different, yet not impossible to fight.
If you know of solo travellers from Asian countries who, in their own ways, are challenging societal norms and choosing an unconventional life, please connect us!
