"Good heavens, potatoes are worth more than gold!"
"Surely not!"
"If you were shipwrecked on a desert island, what would you prefer, a bag of potatoes or a bag of gold?"
"Yes, but a desert island isn't Ankh-Morpork!"
"And that proves gold is only valuable because we agree it is, right? It's just a dream. But a potato is always worth a potato, anywhere. Add a knob of butter and a pinch of salt and you've got a meal, anywhere. Bury gold in the ground and you'll be worrying about thieves forever. Bury a potato and in due season you could be looking at a dividend of a thousand percent."

I think it's a shame that there was never a discworld book involving Moist Von Lipwig facing the elves. Because I would pay so much money to see that. The elves are dangerous and some of them have seriously powerful magic, but for the most part they're creatures of glamour. They entrance, trick, deceive, and intimidate. But the thing is, Moist is even better at it than they are. Moist's primary skills are just his sheer audacity and charisma. The elves are creatures of stories, and Moist knows how to spin a story better than anyone. Plus, it's mentioned elves often try to use their glamour to overwhelm humans with sheer feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. And while Moist doesn't like plenty of things about himself, he's incredibly good at hiding it. As I said, he's a man with audacity. It could also draw an interesting parallel showing how elves aren't much more than he is, just magical con-artists but at least he's trying to be better now. Bonus: Adora Belle Dearheart vs the elves. She has an even more ironclad sense of self-confidence than Moist. Plus she has golems, which would likely be unaffected by both elf glamour and elf swords, and goblins which were formerly enslaved by the elves and are a vengeful people with access to a lot of iron. It would also be funny if they were hyper-sensitive to her cigar smoke or something

Some of the things you could learn up a drainpipe at night were surprising. For example, people paid attention to small sounds – the click of a window catch, the clink of a lockpick – more than they did to big sounds, like a brick falling into the street or even (for this was, after all, Ankh-Morpork) a scream. These were loud sounds which were therefore public sounds, which in turn meant they were everyone’s problem and, therefore, not mine. But small sounds were nearby and suggested such things as stealth betrayed, and so were pressing and personal.

I've read Going Postal approximately a zillion times because its my favorite Discworld novel, and by extension I've read Making Money a fair few times because it is What Is Done after reading GP. But I've never liked it as much.
Making Money is lacking the drive that Moist gets from a foil as fantastic as Reacher Gilt. He was a perfect antagonist because he was Moist writ large. Reacher is the logical endpoint of the road that Moist was walking down when his angel came for him.
I just don't get what Cosmo Lavish and Cribbins are supposed to say about Moist. Like, the difference between Moist and Cribbins is that Cribbins has no respect for people, no style, and is willing to get violent. But I don't think this really reveals any truths about Moist as a character. We already know that Moist has style, that he cares about people in his way, that he is sickened by violence. Revealing Cribbins as his mentor is interesting, but he doesn't really push Moist to grow or change.
Ditto Cosmo. He's a cunning adversary to be sure. But the only real point of contention he has with Moist is that Cosmo wants to be the Patrician, whereas Moist gets uncomfortable thinking Vetinari's way. Otherwise, Cosmo is a very self-deluded Quixotic egotist, while Moist is much more of a realist with a huge ego and a small self-esteem.
Reacher showed us all of the talents and skills Moist valued, raised to excellence, but it revealed Moist's morality. He saw the absolute apex of what he wanted to be and was horrified. Reacher made Moist into a better person just as much as Adora or Vetinari by showing him everything he didn't want to be. To not be a hammer.
I dunno. The story just lacks that strong character glue that makes Going Postal such an effective read.

"You are smirking at me, Moist!"
No, I've frozen because I've just heard what my mouth said, Moist thought. I don't have a clue, I've just got some random thoughts. It's...
"It's about desert islands," he said. "And why this city isn't one."
"And that's it?"
Moist rubbed his forehead. "Miss Cripslock, Miss Cripslock...this morning I got up with nothing in mind but to seriously make headway with the paperwork and maybe lick the problem of that special 25p Cabbage Green stamp. You know, the one that'll grow into a cabbage if you plant it? How can you expect me to come up with a new fiscal initiative by teatime?"
"All right, but--"
"It'll take me at least until breakfast."

I needed to make this in honor of Gladys and the solar eclipse, but I think she ended up looking rather holy (no matter what Constable Dorfl says concerning the existence of holiness).

Wing it! There's nothing left. Remember the gold-ish chain? This is the other end of the rainbow. Talk yourself out of a situation you can't talk your way out of. Make your own luck. Put on a show. If you fall, let them remember how you turned it into a dive. Sometimes the finest hour is the last one.
