Any update on the pin?
Oh I'm sorry! I actually followed up on that privately. Unfortunately it's not the most exciting but let's talk about some of the basics about dating items here. There's some more jewelry specific info if you click this link.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this is our very cute brooch! First off, we're in a super good starting point. We have a legible & clear makers mark! A quick google search reveals a lovely site called The Potteries, which is a list and some history on potters in the Stroke-on-Trent area. Unfortunately, the information on Cara China is scant. Here's the highlights:
The Cara China Co: Longton. Founded 1945
Cara China made fine bone china ornaments, broaches, earrings. Examples include garden benches with flowers winding around, all hand painted. In 1971, they had a visit from the Ambassador of Tunisia, Ismeal Kamel, and his American wife, who, although expected to make a short visit, stayed much longer.  His wife was very interested in English ceramics.
And we've hit a wall. If I wanted to get more information, I would either reach out to the local library to look at newspapers or perhaps email the owner of The Potteries. (Or if I was a local, chat up the grannies to see if they knew who I could talk to)
While the internet has made dating items immensely easier, there's still a lot of hitting the books you have to do. Fashion plates, comparing to other garments, going through family history/letters if able, etc. I find it to be a very interesting task. I would personally place it on the earlier side of our time frame because of the similarities to something like this vs something like this. But at the end of the day, sometimes you're not going to be able to narrow it down more than 1940s-1970s.

Would Sal ever be involved with Lexa’s creations?
The resigned look of acceptance on that poor dog's face omg 😂😂😂
Sal's big ol butt would just as soon crush a piece if Lexa ever tried something like that 🥴 but she'd use his paw print on the bottom of bigger pieces. Like at her home studio? He would have his own little doggy smock and apron to help keep is fur clean of drips and dust when he's lumbering around the place. Being used to sitting very still every time Lexa has a stack of plates, pitchers, water bowls, and Christmas ornaments finished for him to mark with his signature paw print on the bottom for the yearly 'Sal Collection' on her website. They're not huge money makers, but the mister big art-eest himself sells out his collection pretty much every year around the holidays. And his hard work in the studio always gets him his own batch of dog safe cookies as a well earned commission

Art materials part one:
Since I'm having extra shaky hands these last weeks, and it's taking me more to finish drawings 😅, I would like to show to you the art and school materials I have 😁, some have spanish names, so I'd gladly explain every kind of material...
Tumblr media
These are all the color fineliners I have, the first ones in the first row are "kawaii liners", the fourth ones in the first row are bright and vivid colors, the first ones in the second row are high quality color liners, the ones that are at it's side have 30 diferent colors, and the last ones are makers and liners at the same time, they have double tip..the rest are normal color liners.
Tumblr media
These are all the black fineliners I have, they have diferent numbers that indicate the thickness of the tip.
Tumblr media
These ones are special tone markers, they have a base where you can exchange the tips, like is shown with the upper ones, every package has 3 fineliners tips, 3 markers tips and 3 pen tips.
Tumblr media
These are all the scissors, glue sticks, rulers and adhesive tapes I have. I have a a big paper clip too, and that thing you use for make circles and I don't know how is called 😅..finally, that red little thing is a rubber material that you put on pencils and help you to grab them better, I use it for extra support when I'm having shaky hands.
Tumblr media
These are all the pens I have, the usual black, red and blue pens, one of them is a skyblue color pen, the penguin one is just a pen with a cute ornament, the blue and red ones at the sides of the white one are supposed to erase the ink with the white tips on the caps, but they leave a mark on the paper, same with the one that isn't open, but I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know if it leaves a mark 🤔.
Tumblr media
These are all the pencil sharpeners I have, the top ones have two diferent holes, one for the thin pencils and the other for the thick ones.
Tumblr media
These are all the white-out or liquid correctors I have..you know, the thing you use when you want to cover an inky mistake 🙃.
Tumblr media
These are all the markers I have, a lot as you can see 😅..The first ones on the first row are cosmic color markers, the third ones are glittery markers, the ones with the robot are markers with shaped stamps (or seals), and the bunny ones are metalized colors. In the second row there is the case with 24 diferent colors, the ones that has a drawing of pigs are scented, the sharpie ones in the middle are metalized (yeah, like the bunny ones 😶), the ones with a space drawing are neon color markers, the next ones are grey color tones markers and the last ones are mild color markers, the rest of the markers are just normal color markers. Finally, the two loose markers are highlighters, and the skyblue one has two tips, one of them has a star shaped seal.
Tumblr media
This pencil case has more markers I forgot to put in the last picture 🤭, normal markers by the way.
Tumblr media
I had to separate these ones of the other markers, these ones have brush tips, the upper ones on the left side are metalized, the two next ones are acrylic markers, the one with the big case have 48 diferent color markers, each one with double tip, one is a brush tip and the other is a highlighter tip. The last ones are mild color markers with two tips, one of them is a brush tip and the other one is normal marker tip.
There are a lot more art and school materials I want to show, but Tumblr didn't let me put more than 10 pictures, so be prepared for part two 😁.

Wednesday Wanderings and Wonderings - The Passage Edition
Passage Vero-Dodat (19, rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau – 2, rue du Bouloi, 75001 Paris)
1826, two investors, the Charcutier Véro and l Dodat, decided to build a gallery between the streets of Bouloi and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. They built a neo-classical gallery with copper and cast iron ornaments, mirrors, paintings, columns, and a floor paved with black and white marble and globes of light. The Galerie Véro-Dodat owes its success to the store of the "Messageries Laffitte et Gaillard", located in front of the entrance, on Jean-Jacques Rousseau street. While waiting for their stagecoaches, travelers would stroll among the fashionable stores.
The Second Empire and the disappearance of the "Messageries" marked the decline of the gallery. Even if the gallery's appeal diminished, it continues to offer the visitor an image of the Belle Époque. It was remarkably restored in 1997. One can admire the splendidly restored coffered ceilings and the richness of the decorations. It contains art galleries, fashion boutiques, a famous violin maker and a "period" brasserie. (source)
*** But what is a passage?  It is a private road open to the public, a shortcut between several roads, whether covered or not. As a pedestrian space, the passage can house both commerce and housing. Only the abundant decoration and the luxury of the stores differentiate a gallery from a passage. It’s the ancestor of today's shopping malls, the unique charm of Parisian covered passages will immediately transport you to the 19th century (Previous Posts)***

ST. GENEVIEVE OF PARIS (502)
Tumblr media
Saint Geneviève was born of wealthy parents in Gaul (modern France) in the village of Nanterre, near Paris, around 422. Her father’s name was Severus, and her mother was called Gerontia. According to the custom of the time, she often tended her father’s sheep on Mount Valerien.
When the child was about seven years old, Saint Germanus of Auxerre (July 31) noticed her as he was passing through Nanterre. During the Service that night the Bishop placed his hand on her head and told her parents that she would become great in the sight of God, and would lead many to salvation. When Geneviève told him that she wished to dedicate herself to Christ, he gave her a brass medal with the image of the Cross to wear around her neck. Saint Germanus told her never to wear bracelets, or necklaces made with pearls, gold, or silver, and to avoid wearing any other ornaments around her neck, or on her fingers.
When she was fifteen, Geneviève was taken to Paris to enter the monastic life. Through fasting, vigil and prayer, she progressed in monasticism, and received from God the gifts of clairvoyance and of working miracles. Gradually, the people of Paris and the surrounding area regarded Geneviève as a holy vessel (2 Timothy 2:21).
Years later, Saint Geneviève was told that Attila the Hun was approaching Paris, Geneviève and the other nuns prayed and fasted, entreating God to spare the city. Suddenly, the barbarians turned away from Paris and went off in another direction.
Saint Geneviève considered the Saturday night Vigil service to be very important, since it symbolizes how our entire life should be. “We must keep vigil in prayer and fasting so that the Lord will find us ready when He comes,” she said. She was on her way to church with her nuns one stormy Saturday night when the wind extinguished her lantern. The nuns could not find their way without a light, since it was dark and stormy, and the road was rough and muddy. Saint Genevieve made the Sign of the Cross over the lantern, and the candle within burned with a bright flame. In this manner they were able to make their way to the church for the service.

The empty tomb of St Genevieve at St Etienne-du-mont church in Paris located just behind the Pantheon which was originally named St Genevieve church
Tumblr media
Only relics remaining. small parts of hier body after it was burnt in a square in front of Paris city hall. On each side of her relics there’s two two icons. On the right is St, Symeon the stylite who wrote her a letter after seeing her in a vision.
There is a tradition that the church which Saint Geneviève suggested King Clovis should build in honor of Saints Peter and Paul, would become her own resting place when she fell asleep in the Lord around 512 at the age of eighty-nine. Her holy relics were later transferred to the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris. Most of her relics, and those of other saints, were destroyed at the time of the French Revolution.
During the Middle Ages, Saint Geneviève was regarded as the patron Saint of wine makers.
THE HOLY PROPHET MALACHI (400 bc)
Tumblr media
The Holy Prophet Malachi lived 400 years before the Birth of Christ, at the time of the return of the Jews from the Babylonian Captivity. Malachi was the last of the Old Testament prophets, therefore the holy Fathers call him “the seal of the prophets.”
Manifesting himself an image of spiritual goodness and piety, he astounded the nation and was called Malachi, i.e., an angel. His prophetic book is included in the Canon of the Old Testament. In it he upbraids the Jews, foretelling the coming of Jesus Christ and His Forerunner, and also the Last Judgment (Mal 3:1-5; 4:1-6).

MARK 12:13-17
13 Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, to catch Him in His words. 14 When they had come, they said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and care about no one; for You do not regard the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? 15 Shall we pay, or shall we not pay? But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius that I may see it." 16 So they brought it. And He said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" They said to Him, "Caesar's." 17 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they marveled at Him.
JAMES 2:14-26
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Split - Part 14 of The Last Bond Dragon
Tumblr media
The glove. A gauntlet, with ring-like fastenings. A hand didn’t go inside, not like a regular gauntlet, no. This slid over one’s wrist, over the knuckles. It laid on top of one’s hand like a lover, interlacing their fingers, bejeweling it with a light grip. It sparkled even in near darkness, the red-orange tint to the platinum marking it as wholly unnatural… the beckoning of a warm bonfire in the dead of night.
The stone. So simple, so plain, unremarkable, wholly like every other river stone ever plucked from a shore. It had no eldritch runes, no carvings marring its smooth surface. It fit perfectly in one’s palm, cold to the touch like all river stones. Round in the right way and flat in the right way and heavy in the right way, solid and real… allowing you to shift matter at a whim.
The sash. The joke behind it. The casual amusement of this crudely-woven thing, the missed stitches and clumsy weft making it that much more “natural.” It wasn’t even childish, it was supreme talent for creation and nurturing deftly subverted to mock not the users, but its maker. The sweet, gentle touch of healing, of green growing things, of fresh oxygen. Gaia. It named itself, really.
The cup. This one had eluded creation the longest, which was hilariously ironic in the end. One could not drink from this cup, could not share its bounty with friends. There was no wine, no ale, no clear water. To drink from this cup was to drink from the fabric of time itself, and its creator’s desperate, fervent, impossible wish to turn back nearly seventy years.
The glass. The golden frame was etched with fine filigree curlicues, whimsical nonsense in no discernible pattern, pretty for its own sake. The glass was finely made, thin but hardly brittle. It magnified nothing, brought no focus onto blurred images. But when one wore it, one could see reality through the illusion, if one chose to. If one focused their mind instead of their eyes.
The staff. Long and slender with a bulbous top, as wholly unnatural as the sash was natural. As straight as a ruler, no adornment or ornament, as opposite to the glove as it could be. As practical as salt, no whimsy in its design. It was somehow more intimidating than all but one of the relics. And the bell.
---
After a century together, running and fighting and sometimes barely escaping, at last they are ready to make their stand.
And it's the thing that finally tears them apart.

FMP: Design Features in Victorian Print. LO1
Easter Week 3
Mark Oatis:
Victorian style is marked by an exuberant and unabashed celebration of ornament that began in England in the early 1800s in the period after the Industrial Revolution.  Letterforms were condensed and extended to outrageous extremes and festooned with all manner of spurs and serifs, replete with exotic dimensional effects. As typesetters used these tools to deliver dramatic “broadside” posters and advertisements to the marketplace, engravers and lettering artists (also called engrossers) devised opulent currency, letterheads, receipts, and official documents, all hand-drawn and imaginatively flourished with consummate artistry.
With such a riot of decoration loose at every turn, sign makers were not to be outdone. The trade hasn’t been the same since.
Mark Oatis' Work:
Tumblr media
'Our Colorado location afforded us the opportunity to develop brand campaigns and graphic programs for clients within the region’s historic communities. Victorian styling proved a logical fit.'
Oatis, M. (2020). Exploring the Victorian Graphic Style. [online]. Available from: https://graphics-pro.com/education/exploring-the-victorian-graphic-style/ [Accessed 30th March 2024].
Oatis references to a book called “Atkinson’s Sign Painting”. I managed to find some images online:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Atkinson, Frank H. (1915). "Atkinson" sign painting up to now: a complete manual of the art of sign painting. Chicago: F. J. Drake & company. Retrieved from the Library of Congress. [online]. Available from: https://www.loc.gov/item/15017685/.
Decadence: Consuming Decadence: Advertising and the Art Poster:
Unable to access the full book, but this abstract was interesting:
Chapter 6 looks to the end of the nineteenth century to study the rise of the artistic advertising poster. Posters were mass-produced, disposable, and advertised commodities like cocoa and the circus. But they also starred in major art exhibitions in London and Paris and were attacked for their “decadent,” avant-garde styles. In fact, posters offer surprising insight into the Decadent Movement, which is usually associated with 1890s literary authors like Oscar Wilde and Joris-Karl Huysmans. The chapter shows how decadence manifested in visual media, including the advertising poster. Though decadence typically connotes aristocratic nostalgia, it was in fact reacting to a new, middle-class consumer culture of which it was very much a part.
Teukolsky, R. (2020). Decadence: Consuming Decadence: Advertising and the Art Poster. Picture World: Image, Aesthetics, and Victorian New Media. Oxford Academic. https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198859734.003.0007
Reflection, LO4:
Again, I've seemed to have chosen a very obscure subject to research, because I can't find a single piece within a book or online that explains that theories of design present in Victorian print. From my observations however, it is clear that Victorian design includes both sans and sans serif fonts, flourished with decorative features. In my previous research into circus posters, there is order in the chaos and titles of brands are placed at the top of posters, or in the centre of packaging for example.

Cain and Abel.
Tumblr media
4 Adam[o] made love to his wife Eve, “soil and symbiosis come together", and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain “the tiller, the smith”.[p]
She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[q] a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. “vanity”.
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.
4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[r] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
-> Fat is flavor; if we hearken back to the previous section where Adam and Eve, who were also "flavorless figs" did not act with experience but with impulse instead. Abel was not fit to rear sheep or sacrifice them to God. Cain, the Tiller was well within his rights to kill off the vanity in the world. Cute doesn't always boil the water, they say.
10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
-> Blood is time; it circulates through the body through the water into the ground and back into the body again and creates life after life. Cain and Abel like all of our pairs of twins, Isaac and Ishmael, Esau and Jacob, Moses and Aaron, are all embodied within the same man.
Remember in the Garden, God says to grow up means to die. God's exhortation to Cain, "You're done here!" Means he needs to move on from crops to flocks, which he does- to growing up of other men and as we see, a great city.
To subdue one's vanity and finish tilling the Self out of the ground is to shed the blood of time and it requires setting off. God even says Cain, our first real survivor of the Seven Days is under His protection:
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[s]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, ”the wanderer” to the east of Eden.
Cain “makes love to his wife” AKA the Torah, and gives birth to Enoch:
17 Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch “disciplined, well trained” . Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad “city of fugitives from ignorance” , and Irad was the father of Mehujael “destroyed by God”, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, “man of God” and Methushael was the father of Lamech “strong man for humiliation”.
19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah “ornament”  and the other Zillah “shadow”. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal “to follow a course” ; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
21 His brother’s name was Jubal “flow maker”; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain , who forged all kinds of tools out of[u] bronze “intelligence, insightful” and iron, ruff. Tubal-Cain’s “leader of the world’s economy” sister was Naamah. “sweet, pleasant.”
The tantra so far is:
“Leadership begins with the tilling of the mind. Vanity leads to bloodshed. Face east, where the sun rises to grow out of vanity, and enter the city of discipline. There fugitives from the innocence that is destroyed by God will become men of God, will become strong after their humiliation [AKA fish filleted].
To intercourse with beauty is to follow the course. To follow the shadow leads to humiliation. To follow the course is to build tents - temples within the hearts of men, and raise livestock, Godly generations, and teach them to harmonize as different instruments in a band. This takes place by honing the spiritual self that resides inside dicks with assholes. Lead them into a glowing global economy and they will be sweet and pleasant.”
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;    wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me,    a young man for injuring me. 24 If Cain is avenged seven times,    then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
=Lamech decided to grow up.
25 Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[v] “the appointed one, the foundation” saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. “a man, weak but sociable.”
At that time people began to call on[w] the name of the Lord.
“The foundation of man takes place after he stops resounding upon himself and calls instead upon the Name of God.”
=thou shalt not make graven images...a preview!
5 This is the written account of Adam’s family line.
When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[x] when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father[y] of Enosh. 7 After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.
9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After he became the father of Kenan “the composer”, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.
12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel “praise of God” 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.
15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.
18 When Jared “descent” had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah” When he is dead it will be sent, a man of the javelin”. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After he became the father of Lamech “strong man”, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.
28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah ‘to comfort, to rest” [z] and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.
32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem “conscious knowledge of the whole of creation”, Ham “hot, a protective wall” and Japheth “formless expansion.”
= “God created mankind in His Likeness. He made them complementary, one on the left, on the right, one for yesterday, one for today, one for east and west, north and south. One for the old, one for the new.
Through brilliance, a foundation was born. It was called mankind. It was an early mankind, weak, but with tremendous potential. By composing new ideas and efforts, man was able to grow and please God. "
-> Every time we perform work and it solves a problem or brings happiness to the world, it is commemorated during Shabbat.
Each Shabbat celebration brings us closer and closer to the end of what is called an Epoch.
Epochs are the times between Eden and the end of the road in Hebron, the legendary city. When everyone arrives in Hebron the Epoch will close and something called Moshiach- the end of universal ineptitude on earth- will take place.
Years in the Torah are the spans of time between Kruvim, or the angels of yesterday and tomorrow; they define what is called a Day of Yah, or a "year" of human life. Every Kruvim we spend is supposed to count us down to the arrival of universal cosmic enlightenment in the presence of the God of Israel, a phenomenon called Moshiach, the universal bringing of all messianic tendencies to bear.
Noah's intervention, which created a protective wall between the formlessness of violence and corruption and all conscious knowledge was, according to the Torah 500 of 6,000 years needed for Moshiach to occur. The death of Abel at Cain's hands got us off to a good start.
