ed thinks he’s unloveable - has thought so since long before he met stede - but he was still brave enough to confess that stede makes him happy, to take a chance on a kiss. like, i cannot stress how terrified he must have been, must have been waiting for the other shoe to drop but hoping it wouldn’t. that is the most courageous thing ed could have done considering the depth of his contempt for himself. he must have felt so utterly safe with stede and also so besotted that it made him take the risk. then he waited all night until the sun rose on the ever-dwindling chance stede would still show. he had so much love and happiness and hope that maybe he was wrong, maybe he is worthy of love, of stede’s love. and then stede never came, and ed must have felt all of that self-loathing increase tenfold with humiliation to boot. stede’s apparent rejection made an already present wound triple in size, and once izzy landed the final blows, it completely engulfed him and he self-destructed.

If Stede Bonnet was an animal, he'd be a peacock.

Following the symbolism of the moon that David Jenkins talked about; “Or the full moon is way too big and unrealistic, but in their minds, that’s what it looks like”, I wanted to look at the way the sky represents their mindsets, emotions, and the place their relationship is in.

*As we all already know from David Jenkins’ quote about it, the big full shining moon when they’re having the “you wear fine things well” moment on the ship is them in that honeymoon (literally) phase. Where everything is so romantic and perfect and beautiful. It’s fantastical. It’s a fairytale.

*And then, after they kiss and after Stede doesn’t show up on the dock we see Ed rowing away with the sea and sky backdrop again. It’s dawn, so that romantic vision and the shadow puppets of new love and a maybe relationship are gone and he is looking at the truth (some objective, some subjective). Objective truth: their relationship wasn’t and isn’t a fairy tale and will take work. Subjective truth as Ed sees it: Stede left because he didn’t actually love him the way he thought. 

But see, the sun’s barely come up in that scene. And it is overcast. The light you get is breaking through fissures in a blanket of clouds. So a) he’s not seeing things clearly because he’s understandably hurt and emotional, and b) the view that is overtaking him in this post moon is way too big phase is one of gloom and potential storms ahead.

*Then we have Stede! Having had a bit of time and perspective (and a supportive person to talk to) going out onto the sea with sky behind him and it is all golden. Based on the timeline of the day leading up to this scene, I assume it’s dusk, but he goes into the night knowing that the moon may be waning (but still it may wax! what hope!) and it will not be full and larger than life. And again, the clouds play an important role. They aren’t entirely absent, like we see in their moment together on the Revenge. But there are only a few whisps occupying a broad yellow sky beaming all its light onto Stede and his plans and hopes. He’s going into the night and the often unforgiving sea with clear skies and the belief that he can and will make things right.

Like the old very practical saying, “red sky at night, sailors delight. red sky at morning, sailors take warning”, the sky tells us so much of what we should know for what’s happening in the moment and what is to come.

i put a ton of tags on a thing and realized maybe i should just make a post because i wanna know what other ppl think…

thinking about how if izzy had continued/forced his confession onto ed would've gone bc with eds mental state probably backing off on it and being more vague was a good choice. when izzy confesses ed is at his lowest and fully unable to accept that someone loves him and that he can love someone else and ed might have used violence to reenforce these beliefs.

ed dismissing it was probably the best outcome for izzy at that point because if ed was convinced that it was true (although i suspect he did believe that bc he shot izzy to kill the love) i'm not sure what he would have done to end that love.

i’m also thinking about the scene where ed is sobbing and playing with the wedding toppers after having shot izzy. i'm not sure when ed realized that izzy wasn't dead but if he had before that time an aspect of that breakdown could have been him grieving izzys love for him because he did think izzy stopped after the gunshot. which is why he went to izzy to be killed he thought “well, izzys done it for me before and there's no way he still loves me so he will be willing to kill me”

tired of izzy hands angst,,, , , i want steddyhands where STEDE feels like the odd one out. Stede who listens to decades of history between his lovers and with every new tale feels more and more terrible. when he reads stories to the crew at night he doesn’t imagine himself and ed as the protagonists like he used to. instead, he sees Ed and Izzy and himself as the mean witch who dared try and separate them.

he starts spiraling. every time he wakes up first in the morning and izzy has gravitated away from his naturally cold feet towards ed’s warmth, it feels like a message. every time something catches ed’s eye and he yells for Izzy to excitedly show him even though stede was standing right there, it feels like a cut thread. every time he fails at something pirate-y and they both have to pick up his slack, it feels like a death sentence.

his ridiculous waste of water bath times become longer. it’s one of the few places ed and izzy will leave him complete privacy unless he requests their presence, making it the perfect spot to hide when the fear begins to choke him and he can’t help but cry. it’s an ugly sight, that, but ever since mary told him she could hear him he’s learned how to keep almost completely quiet. best to keep it hidden less their opinions of him sour even more.

his first instinct is to run away. to relieve them of his presence so he can’t ruin things any further, because it was his presence that ruined things between them in the first place. but he swore on his life and honor that he would never leave like that again. so instead, he throws himself into being as agreeable and unobtrusive as possible.

he makes sure he’s the first out of bed every day without fail to give them alone time in the morning, and returns from sitting on his ass, doing nothing, useless little rich boy checking on the crew with tea and breakfast for them to enjoy. he’ll happily join activities if invited, and he often is invited!! but he no longer shoves himself into things where he wasn’t wanted in the first place. he still gets one on one time with them, of course, but he makes sure to double check he isn’t taking up their time that could be better spent with each other.

he didn’t mean to get between them, you see, and he’ll be damned if he continues on a moment further now that he’s realized what happened.

Toying with a fanfic/comic idea of Ed and Stede living quiet lives in the inn by the sea and Ed decides to write a romance novel, which is basically just Pride and Prejudice a century before Jane Austen.

Ed is telling Stede the idea. It stars the romantic lead Ed-lizabeth Bonnet and her crew mate the Dread Black Jane. They go to a party thrown in elegible bachelor Lucius Spriggs’s honor but he also shows up with a handsome equally eligible friend who is rich and handsome and the romantic interest for the story.

Stede’s ears perk up. Oh? Tell me more about this guy!

Ed continues, well he’s a bit of a dick. (Maybe Ed was still mad at Stede for some transgression that morning.)

Stede: well he can’t be all bad, can he? What’s his name?

Ed: oh, I dunno, I was thinking maybe Mr. Darby?

Stede: hmmm. I like that.
