Maiko week 2022
Day 3 - Cactus Juice
Mai seems a little too tipsy to be playing with knives. Zuko would be worried, if he wasn’t so drowsy!
Well, I never posted anything I’ve done before (cause I don’t think they are good enough), but for Maiko Week 2022 I decided to give it a shot.
I had no time to try coloring it. Maybe one day

Maiko Week 2022, Day 7: Free day
For Maiko Week 2022 hosted by @idonthatemaiko. A day late but hopefully worth the wait!
Mai sat in the Fire Lord’s private garden, impatiently twirling a knife. Zuko told her to meet him here an hour ago and had yet to show up. She supposed he had been waylaid by some minister or another, eager for the Fire Lord’s opinion on some matter. She threw the knife at a tree and blew her bangs out of her eyes.
“Lady Mai?” a servant called from the doorway. “Fire Lord Zuko asked that you come with me.”
Mai stifled her grumbling and stood to follow them. If Zuko was so busy why didn’t he just tell her to go home?
She followed the servant deep into the palace, past the public reception areas and offices. Finally, the servant stopped in front of an immense wooden door and handed Mai an ancient-looking key.
“The Fire Lord asked that you open the door,  Lady Mai.”
The servant bowed and left. Mai put the key in the lock and pushed on the heavy door.
Inside the enormous room, she found Zuko standing among plush furniture, full bookshelves, and racks of delicately-wrought knives.
“Zuko, what —?” Mai asked, but lost her words before she could finish.
Zuko stepped forward and took her hands.
“Mai, this is the Fire Lady’s suite,” he said, smiling. “It’s where all of the past Fire Ladies have spent their free time, entertained their guests, escaped from their duties.”
“It’s beautiful,” Mai said, her voice catching.
“I had it renovated recently,” Zuko continued. “In the hope that there would be a new occupant soon.”
Mai stared at him, once again at a loss for words. Zuko took a deep breath.
“Mai, I hope that you will be the new occupant of this room,” he said, looking deeply into her eyes. “If you’re willing, I would like to you be the next Fire Lady.”
“Zuko, are you —?”
“Mai, what I’m really asking is, will you marry me?”
Zuko looked into her eyes and raised her hand to his lips. When Mai caught her breath again, she replied:
“Yes, Zuko. I will.”

A rainy day in the Fire Nation reminds Mai to move a little slower.
Written for Spring Maiko Week
While I finish things up on my long fic, I wrote a little something for Spring Maiko Week - my one and only fic I was able to crank out for this.
Anyway, I love older domestic Maiko and I like to think they get a little bit of piece and quiet later in life.

Day 1 - Melting/Rain
For Maiko Week 2022 organized by @idonthatemaiko
Raindrops pattered on the dry cliffside pathway, water streaming down the way like a makeshift waterfall. The pair made no move to leave.
“We just had to come up here, didn’t we?”
Zuko cringed inwardly at his poor judgement. Gray clouds had hung over the blue horizon as he and his girlfriend ascended the slopes of the caldera.
The cliffs, their regular haunt, had become a place of solace. Far from the Royal Guard ordered to shadow Zuko. Away from the curious citizens more than eager to catch a glimpse of the returned prince. No rules, no rigidity, no Azula.
But plenty of rain today. Oops.
“I really thought it would bypass us, I’m sorry,” he murmured into her hair.
Zuko sat up from the blanket they lounged on and shed his outermost robe. Calloused hands passed the garment to Mai.
Mai deadpanned up at him from her seated position, “What am I supposed to do with this?”
A Deadpan Mai, Zuko learned, could quickly lead to a Cranky Mai. Not to be confused with Hangry Mai. Deadpan Mai wielded sarcasm as expertly as she did her knives. Cranky Mai turned to insults that went straight for the jugular. Worst of all, Hangry Mai turned into…a monster. Best to avoid all of them, if possible.
He shrugged, the fabric flowing in the salty storm breeze. “Hold it over your head, maybe? To stop the rain from ruining your makeup…”
The knife-thrower ran a pale finger over her cheeks, the tip coming up black from kohl and mascara that now streamed down her face. Her mauve lipstick was in the beginning stages of running as well.
She sighed, “It’s too late for that now. Come to my place to dry?”
Zuko perked up as he reached a better solution. He searched his mussed-up robe for a corner, attempting to dab the ruined makeup from his girlfriend’s face. Mai resigned under his ministrations, hoping she could at the very least stride through the capitol without bearing the resemblance of a circus clown.
One look at Zuko’s furrowed eyebrow let her hope down. The black streaks had turned into obsidian globs on her alabaster skin. She batted his hands away before standing up huffily.
“Just take me home.” Mai averted her gaze and began walking, discomfited with her appearance.
“Home, yeah. Going.” The prince scrambled to fold their blanket and grab their shared canteen of water.
Mai had walked far enough ahead that Zuko had to jog to catch up. Fat raindrops flew diagonally from the thundering clouds above. Wind blustered and ruffled their robes. Zuko reached out his hand to hold hers. A tube-shaped object in her sleeve pocket bumped against his thumb. Quickly he recognized it to be her lipstick vial.
His fingers snatched the cool metal from its confines.
“I don’t want more of that right now.” Mai walked on, leaving Zuko in the middle of a low-traffic street.
Hastily, Zuko unscrewed the tube and did not think twice before smearing the mauve cream all over his good eye. Uncle had frank discussions with Zuko during their time away. Women are tricky and tend to take more stock into appearances than men. In a way not entirely comical, the lipstick shade bore an uncanny resemblance to his scar tissue.
Mai stopped in her tracks when Zuko caught up to her once more. He slipped her lipstick tube back in its pocket.
“Are you stupid?” Her tone was genuine.
“Now they’ll stare at both of us, not just you.”
She laughed despite herself. “Let’s hurry.”
Drenched to the bone, they hurried to Mai’s vacant home. Thankfully, the streets weren’t as busy with the downpour. Still some passersby gasped and gaped at the melty-faced duo.
Mai didn’t hate the rain so much after that day.

I Need to Find Myself Before I Find You
About four years after end of the series, Mai and Zuko are not together, and haven't seen each other for a while. They've been trying to move on from each other, and keep busy. Mai grows bored with working at a flower shop and decided to travel and do something differently. Will Zuko find out she left? what will he do? Will they ever meet again? Yes, they will. Eventually.
This story is written for Maiko week 2022 and loosely follows its prompts. Prompt for the first day is "Rain."It is more or less canon compliant and AtLA comic compliant, but exists in a slightly different universe from my other post-atla maiko fics. Because coming up with different versions of Maiko reunion is fun, and I loved sending Mai to travel alone and meet the world. The whole story is all planned out, but I am writing it way more slower than I hoped, so with only seven chapters, mostly written, I am confident I'll finish it, just not this week.

There are 2 prompts for each day. You can choose one or both of them to inspire your work. There are also 2 bonus prompts for you to use on any of the days. If none of the prompts speak to you, feel free to create your own Mai content. The prompts are meant to promote creativity, not restrict it!

FAQ
How do I participate in Mai Week?
Create your content and post it on tumblr. If you post on AO3, make sure to share the link on tumblr. Also make sure to add it to the Mai Week AO3 collection, which will be posted about later. Tag this blog in the main body of your post (@maiweek). In the tags, tag “mai week."
If we don’t reblog your post within 24 hours, feel free to send us a message with the link! I’m sure we all know how unreliable the tumblr tagging system is, we would never intentionally not reblog someone’s post!
If I’m not a creator, how can I support Mai Week?
The best way to support content creators leading up to and during Mai Week is to let them know you support them! Reblog and comment on their work, send Mai content into this blog for us to post, etc. We’ll be reblogging Mai content from now up until the week itself. Supporting that work now will encourage creators for the event week itself.
Also, you don’t have to be an artist or an author to create content! Click here for other ways to participate in Mai Week besides fanart and fanfic!
Who is in charge of Mai Week?
This blog and the event are being run by @praetorqueenreyna and @lady-tortilla-chip
I have a question that isn’t here!
Feel free to send us asks, we’d love to hear from you all! They can be questions, headcanons, ideas, or anything else! If you have a question you’d like us to answer privately, be sure to let us know in the ask. Otherwise, all other asks will be published on our blog.

Mai sighs, “Since when are we honest with each other?”
Suki drops her gaze, fingers tightening over Mai’s knee and some part of her longs for her to move her hand up just a little. To glide up her leg and trace the inside of her thigh. She wants her to touch her without any layers too.
Looking down at the other woman in this context has her considering how simple it could be to cross the line.
“What do you want me to be honest about?” Suki asks, her voice quieter now. Speaking as though there were others in the room, as though someone could hear her. Maybe if she spoke any louder someone would. Maybe Ty Lee would.
Mai doesn’t actually have an answer to that so she doesn’t try to offer one, instead saying, “I’m tired.”
Suki looks up at her again, eyes narrowed in consideration. The pause is long and Suki looks as though she has to build courage to ask, “Will Zuko be joining you this evening?”
Mai rolls her eyes, gaze landing on the wall beyond Suki’s head, “That would be unlikely.”
Suki hums, “Then please,” she starts, hand finally shifting up to trace her thigh, her other reaching up to tilt Mai’s chin towards her, “allow me to be here with you in his stead.”
Her breath stops in her lungs and her mouth dries at the prospect. The idea of it, of Suki rising up to press their lips together, to keep pushing until Mai gives and takes and pulls, it pools in molten desire in her gut.
She wants.

Overviewing my writing plans for 2024:
maiko-wise, I had one fic I poked at in 2023, this au I shared a snippet of here. I'd like to try finishing that up and posting into 2024 (because it's really cool)
there's another maiko au I was toying with, but it'd need a lot of outlining and work as it's slightly long (predicted 10k) and that takes me a lot of effort, and idk about it
I've been writing off and on for this other fandom (won't mention it yet) but not posting anything yet because I want to fully explore the fandom on my own before I start interacting with it all... I think I'd like to finish up one more fic for this fandom, to maybe consider posting towards 2025?
not this blog's focus, but I have some doctor who thasmin related plans/fics in the works, hopefully looking to post 2 fics for them
And I'd like to keep writing original short stories from the flashficfriday prompts, as I've really enjoyed that in 2023

“Where is your husband?”
“I don’t know. Probably with your wife.”
I'm unreasonably obsessed with the concept of Mai/Zuko and Katara/Aang being married, but they're cheating with each other's spouses (So Zuko with Katara and Mai with Aang).
For Mai Week Day 2. Prompt: Jealousy

May Maiko Week, Day 4
Vacation. Thanks, @idonthatemaiko!
Mai woke up to an empty bed in the royal family’s restored Ember Island beach house. She sighed heavily and pulled on her robe as she shuffled down the hall.
“I thought we agreed, no work on vacation?” she said dryly. Zuko jumped, the scroll he’d been reading clattering to the floor.
“Sorry,” he said, gathering the scroll. “I got a messenger hawk first thing this morning, and I hoped I could handle it before you woke up.”
“You’re missing the point of vacation, my dear. You’re supposed to be resting, sleeping in, laying on the beach.”
“The Fire Lord can’t take vacations,” Zuko mumbled.
“Who says?”
Zuko cocked his head at her, his eyebrow arched.
“You have a point.”
He scrawled a note on the outside of the scroll — “I’ll handle this when I return” — and took it to the window, where the messenger hawk stood waiting. As it flew off, he took Mai’s hand.
“Breakfast on the beach?”
“Sounds perfect.”

Last week I posted an Azula shipping statistics expansion on phantomstatistician’s wonderful post.
When planning ahead for redoing the Azula shipping stats in January, I decided I also want to use the same process for Mai ships then as well.
But, it’s Mai Week, I’m too impatient to wait three months to start getting answers, plus I’m stuck on the fics I wanted to write for Mai Week, so here’s an early run of Mai shipping stats.
@maiweek
Methods
On October 5, 2022, I started with a list of 34 possible Mai ships (and thank you, fandom friends for the all suggestions). Once I eliminated all the options without any works or even a tag on AO3, I took a survey of works for the remaining 21 Mai ships from 01/01/2013 to 10/05/2022.
Data
This chart is for the totals of the sample surveyed. And the other is a table of the chart’s raw numbers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the chart of the total Mai ship fics broken down by year. It included the top 10 ships (Maiko, MaiLee, Maizula, Maitara, MaiAang, Maikka, Maiyue, Maiki, Jet/Mai and Mai/Kei Lo)
Tumblr media
And here’s the table for the both the 10 ships in the chart, as well as one showing all 21 ships in the sample
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s this chart that shows the year to year output of works rather than the total. It features the same 10 ships as the previous chart.
Tumblr media
And then the raw data tables for this chart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Observations
Total sample of works by year
Before 2020, the growth of the sample never exceeded 150 works
2020 was the year where the most Mai ship works were added
2022 is on track to be the third most productive year, while both down significantly from 2021 and still higher than every pre-2020 year
Cumulative count by year
in terms of total fic count, maiko has consistently remained the Mai ship with the most works.
MaiLee has been in second place for every year except 2016. That year, Maizula held second place.
In 2013 and 2014, Maitara held third place. In 2015, Maizula took third and in 2016 MaiLee took third place when Maizula was in second place that year. Since 2017, Maizula has held third place.
Annual output by year
Maiko has consistently not only held first place, but each year the majority of Mai ship works were Maiko.
Starting in 2020, Maiko’s majority dipped to 61%, and below 60% since then.
Again, the year isn’t over, but Maiko’s output by percentage for 2022 is the lowest it’s ever been (54%)
MaiLee’s highest output year was 2020, at 32%. This has slightly declined to 27%, but is far and above pre-2020 performance.
The Mai ships who currently have the second and third highest output of works for 2022 are MaiLee and Maizula
Speaking of Maizula, while the year isn’t over, 2022 looks to be Maizula’s highest output year since 2016
Other observations
Every year, the annual output of M/F Mai works is greater than the output of  to F/F Mai works
Before 2020, the M/F Mai works to F/F Mai works output was usually 80% M/F to 20% F/F
Since 2020, the M/F Mai works to F/F Mai works ratio has hovered between 60% M/F to 40% F/F and 65% M/F to 35% F/F
Parting words
So that’s how Mai’s shipping stats are looking currently. I know that with Mai week in progress, not only have new Mai ship works been added, but new Mai ships are being added to AO3. Much like with the Azula ship stats, I’m hoping to update these stats in 2023 with the finalized 2022 numbers, including the new ships that weren’t included this time.
But I’d also like to say how interesting the data has been. Not only learning about new Mai ships - it’s always surprising what people will come up with - but also how old some ships really are. (For example, Maiki and Jet/Mai have had works since 2013? Impressive!)

Written for @maiweek 2022 (Prompt: Arranged Marriage).
In which Mai is married off and never joins Azula's team, only to end up becoming her old crush's bodyguard after the war ends.
Plot is inspired by this part from my other story, shadows and steel: “We’d meet again at one of those mind-numbing social functions. My husband would be at the other end of the table [...] I’d be contemplating offing myself with a pair of chopsticks while Ty Lee flirts with all of my brothers in law. You’d see me, I’d see you. We’d remember that time we kissed by the fountain, but neither of us would say anything. We’d be trapped, just like we are now.” Setting down her drink, she offered him a pointed glance. “Only we’d be alone.”
