Okay so there's this fic called Scarlet and Black <- ff dot net link, written by Vathara. VERY good one-shot, basically exploring an AU where, following the Agni Kai against his father, Zuko eventually lost his sight entirely.

However, he managed to learn how to use firebending as an extension of his senses-- similar to how Toph uses earthbending-- only he reads heat signatures and currents on the air. Add in awareness of sounds, scents, and touch, and your usual level of Zuko determination (ie off the charts), and he is dead-set on keeping this fact a secret from outsides. Uncle Iroh is, as in all AUs, Zuko's secret-keeper and counselor.

So, with Iroh's help, Zuko is able to keep his blindness secret from all the cast, except perhaps for Aang. Even Azula doesn't cotton on.

(under the cut: taking this idea, rolling with it, and making it Zumai with a side of Secret Airbender.)

Everything changes at the Crossroads of Destiny episode. Iroh is imprisoned and Zuko is restored to his place as Crown Prince. Now he has to hide his disability under even greater scrutiny than ever before.

And he meets Mai again. A lot has changed (and he will never see her face again), but still, they recognize each other. They know each other.

There is tension between them. Azula is transparently working to set them up. Ty Lee thinks they're adorable.

But there's something else about Mai, something he hadn't noticed in the past. Maybe he wouldn't even realize it now, except that he's had a lot (a lot) of experience with someone else. Someone blessed with agility, with a light tread, someone sensitive to the tiniest air current.

He recognized it in the Avatar, and he recognizes it in Mai.

Around the episode The Beach, Mai and Zuko end up having an argument on Ember Island. A divergent point from canon: this argument is private.

He refuses to open up to her, and she wants to know why he can't trust her. He says there is no one he CAN trust. Mai says, in a pique of frustration, "Zuko, I know you're blind."

He's stunned. How did she know?

It turns out, Mai figured it out early on. And she's been covering for Zuko, helping him in little ways so that no one else catches on. So that Azula and Ozai don't realize the truth.

Zuko doesn't know what to say. He can only return a secret for a secret, “And I know you're an airbender."

Turning-point-in-the-relationship time. What happens next, I don't know, but I think there is angst and, at some point, making out. To quote one of my favorite movies, "I don't know, it's a mystery."

Mai and the Spider Woman

For the Year of OTP prompt, Fairytale.

Mai hated the palace. She hadn’t always. When she was a young girl, she loved visiting. As a special guest of Princess Azula, she had been treated with high honor. As Fire Lord Zuko’s girlfriend, she had been bowed and scraped to, as the palace servants fell over themselves trying to court the favor of the woman who might one day be Fire Lady. Now, though, she was no one in particular. Her father’s tenuous hold on his seat in Fire Lord Zuko’s council brought her back to the opulent palace more often than she cared for, but nonetheless, she never turned down the opportunity to go with Ukano.

Every visit brought Mai back into Zuko’s circle. She had never had the ability to fake enthusiasm, but he knew her well enough to know that her sarcastic barbs weren’t meant to be taken seriously. He had known her apathy was her way of self-preserving. That her smirk was as good as a giggle and smile. It had been enough for years. Whenever they had broken up before, it hadn’t taken much more than a smirk and a nod to bring him back into her arms. That had been her plan after she’d gotten past the argument that had led to their last break-up. And she was certain that it would be their last break up. They were in their twenties now. Too old for the break-up to make-up game. Zuko had been ready for commitment for years, and now, Mai was too. So when Lord Ukano was called to the palace, Mai only put up a token protest before agreeing to travel with her father. Mai was sure that both she and her father had the same goal. He was well aware of the pattern. It was an old dance that had gotten Mai back into her position so many times before that she never considered that one day it wouldn’t. Mai was flummoxed when Zuko greeted her with polite disinterest. The problem presented itself at dinner that night.

She was there. Mai’s jaw clenched when she saw the Avatar’s waterbender take the honored seat to Zuko’s right. She did it casually, as if it were her rightful place, though she hadn’t been in Caldera for more than a couple of months. It had been years since Mai had seen her, but she knew that she and Zuko had been in touch. That had never bothered her because Zuko had kept in touch with all of his little friends. None of them had ever stood out before. Now, Mai wished she’d paid more attention

Still can't believe there are people out there that hate Maiko. She went against Azula for him, and that's after he broke her heart. I guarantee she would have been willing to help the Gaang if Zuko had talked to her before leaving the note. But he couldn't risk her telling Azula or Ty Lee. So I get why he did it. Mai is ride or die, but also knows her worth enough not to out up with anyone's bs. Her and Zuko are meant to be.

i remember when i heard about zvtara through fandom, and they were talking about all these different scenes where they had such great chemistry. i decided to watch because enemies to lovers is my sweet spot and i remember watching the entire show through and being like ??? because i didn’t catch any of the supposed shipping moments between the two. so i thought maybe my media literacy is off until i did another rewatch and just decided that zvtara is heavily non-canon no matter what they say.

also so glad that you defend maiko on here as well; they’re literally my otp i love them to death

Zutara is literally just fans looking at two attractive characters, deciding to make an enemies-to-lovers fanfic of them, then convincing themselves said fanfic is actually canon and getting really mad when people point out it isn't.

Maiko is such a neat little ship, I never understood the hate.

Since I started watching TLOK again from the beginning and now I'm already on the first four episodes of Book 4, every time I ship wuko more and more.

I'll be honest, their relationship has a better development than m/akorra and masami ever had.

At first, Mako can't stand being around Wu at all, until he starts to really care for him a little bit, especially when he realizes that maybe there's some good in Wu and he just needs to be steered in the right direction.

He even went overboard when he was so desperate for Wu that he was a jerk to his ex-girlfriends again, especially Korra.

And then there's the fact that originally Mako was supposed to have a Fire Nation princess as a love interest, but that was changed because Wu is actually directly connected to the Earth Kingdom and he's the perfect foil for Kuvira.

Let's not forget that this is part of canon dialogue in Book 4, Episode 8; "Remembrances":

Mako: [Angrily.] Look at you! You're so weak, "Wu down" is your catchphrase.

Wu: I know, I'm a wimp. But it's not my fault, I was born that way! I'm not like you Mako, I wasn't raised by a pack of cops in the woods.

Mako: [Annoyed.] You don't know anything about me, do you?

Wu: [Tiny pause.] Yeah, I'm drawing a blank. Why is that? How do I not know stuff about you?

Mako: Uhh ... you never asked?

Wu: Well, I'm asking now! [Grasping Mako's shoulders.] What's your favorite food? What's your favorite color? Is there a special lady in your life?

Mako: Not since Korra and I broke up.
