Pretty much everything plot relevant in Mai Otome could happen without the pedophilic incest love triangle also happening. Sergei could be overly invested in Arika because as far as he knows she is either the woman he liked is daughter or the lost princess of Windbloom that it is his job to find. Nina could be overly jealous of Arika and desperately want her father's approval because she is traumatized so despite how much Sergei shows that he loves her unconditionally she thinks she could be abandoned by him at any moment. Arika could just not have romantic feeling for Sergei.
I don't understand why the writers chose to make it romantic when they just could not.

I regret not paying more attention to Arika and Mashiro back when I first watched Mai Otome. In retrospect, their relationship progression throughout the season is a joy to see transform, from being unable to stand each other’s presence to practically promising their lives to one another. The OVAs were pretty much them needing marriage counseling.

Anime Update 67
Dragon Ball - You can really tell at this point that Toriyama had fully settled his series into what we now know as it's usual tone, the "DBZ tone". Where the comedy is far from gone, but the high stakes drama and sincere melodramatic seriousness have been ramped up, particularly when it comes to trying to stop a seemingly unstoppable evil. When you have Master Roshi taking a solo stand and acting this damn serious and intense, with Mike McFarland continuing to sell it perfectly, you know shit has gotten real. And while it was surprising and pleasing to see Piccolo freaking the fuck out upon learning whose pupil Roshi was and that he knew the Evil Containment Wave, the showdown sadly went as I predicted - Roshi messed up the direction of the technique, thus failing to re-imprison Piccolo, and over-exerted all of his energy to the point where it literally killed him. Yeah, it KILLED HIM. I had to watch Master Roshi fall over and die. Not something I think anyone expected to see, but after Krillin it was already established that no one was safe from King Piccolo's wrath, and we're sure to get even more death and destruction now that all seven Dragon Balls are in the tyrant's grasp and he's on the cusp of wishing his youth back! Hurry to Korin Tower, Yajirobe and Goku!
My-Otome - We got a breather before the coming finale this week where Arika, Mashiro and Miyu have ended up in the Black Valley (the REAL Black Valley, not just the desert nation it belonged to prior to it's disappearance) with none other than Mai and Mikoto, who've done their work from here for some time, particularly Mikoto, who's a literal goddess here who channels herself through cats like the one Mashiro has as a pet. I kind of groaned when Miyu revealed Mai as a princess and then literally saying "Mai Hime", and also when Arika had to ask Mai "what IS an Otome, really?" Like, if we've still not figured that out this late in the show, that's a sign of a convoluted, hard to grasp plot - this series suffers from that just as it's predecessor did despite the more simplistic presentation. But it was worth finally getting confirmation that Nina is indeed the child of royal blood and true heir to Windbloom rather than Arika, who’s actually related to Lena Sayers (as is Alyssa, I guess?), and a scene between Nina and Sergay that was actually a pretty good father-daughter moment, which has been disappointingly rare to come by with these two. Encouraged that her lack of royal blood ultimately has no bearing on the determination, willpower and leadership skills needed to be a queen, Mashiro is now training with Mikoto while Arika gains new power from Mai, and Natsuki, Nao, Midori and the rest head off back to Garderobe for the final battle to defend time and space from the Harmonium and prevent Nagi's war from coming to pass.
Assassination Classroom S2 - Outer Space Time is notoriously derided as possibly THE weakest part of this series' story in the manga. Like last week's Civil War arc, the way the anime adapts it in a single episode makes it more bearable, but the difference is that the glaring weaknesses are still glaring weaknesses even here - nothing the anime does could really make me not notice. Aside from the premise being outlandish and unbelievable even for this series and the trained professional astronauts being idiot pushovers who hand important government info over to some stowaway kids whose threat they know to be empty (and one of them had the voice of Godot, which was super distracting), two issues really stood out to me - firstly the fact that it was Nagisa and Karma (with a portable Ritsu) taking this on themselves even when we JUST had a lot of focus on them and so this had the impossible feat of following that tough act, and it just didn't feel right. Kayano is as invested in saving her teacher as them and in fact has the MOST personal reason for wanting to do it, so she absolutely should've gone too and balanced out the gender ratio, but she got unfairly sidelined for no reason, and the female character who WAS there, Ritsu, got some great bits of technological and personal growth that really deserved to be the biggest focus of this story rather than coming in near the end on the way back to Earth. She could control a freaking spacecraft! All the things you could've done with that that you didn't do! And secondly, the ending. Even in the anime, finding out that with a miracle cure that Okuda could whip up (because it's basis is something she’d made way back in the series' fifth episode!), the probability of Korosensei exploding is greatly reduced, but the students still want to try and assassinate him anyway until March just to keep that status quo going, complete with a clip slideshow of the entirety of E Class, made it feel like we just reached the end of the story abruptly and prematurely! We know there's a big government plan to finally kill Koro for good, so why try faking us out like this? It just felt so weird.
The next episode was a lot better, as it crammed in all of February's content, which in the manga spanned a good many chapters, all into this one and did it effortlessly. They even make a joke out of it at the start with Korosensei trying to pack all the festive Winter get-togethers he and his students missed out on into this one month - Christmas, New Years, all that jazz. Karma gets a nice moment where he acknowledges his reasoning for wanting to enroll back into Kununigaoka next year, ranging from the hilariously petty and sadistic to the strangely touching affection he's got for Gakushu as his archrival. Then we get Nagisa realizing he might be best suited to get a career as a teacher during one of his tutoring sessions with Sakura. This leads to the Valentines Day bit about Kayano wanting to give Nagisa a gift and confess her feelings for him that have boiled to the surface ever since he kissed her, Karma and Rio trying to help her out due to the irresistible prospect of being able to "tease two lovebirds with one stone" (you two are such jerks and I love you for it!), and seeing how other E Class students approach romance. While Kayano getting reduced to JUST a love interest would be problematic, she's still such an immensely likable and interesting character that this kind of set-up works in her favor and makes you enjoy watching it, and it gives her good development by way of having her decline the opportunity to get with Nagisa since he's so focused on his future prospects and she loves, admires, and respects him too much to want to get in the way of that. Karma and Rio distracting a pervy Korosensei with an appealing image of Aguri was both funny and touching and almost sad in all the right ways. Speaking of, since Aguri is dead, Korosensei I guess gets his own Valentines date with, of all people, Gakuho when he pays the old campus a visit that night and asks Koro about possibly continuing to teach E Class next year. While an internal thought shows us that this man hasn't really changed and is still a douche committed to his flawed education system and lording over from his position of power, seeing him acknowledge the fondness he'd had for Aguri and how he's bonded more with Koro to the point of sharing coffee with him, talking about their students, and giving him praise to the point where he wants him to remain a teacher at his school was so bizarrely heartwarming and wholesome, and Koro even vocalizes his respect for Gakuho as both a fellow educator and his worthy arch-enemy in the academic world. And last we get the date between Karasuma and Bitch-Sensei, which starts funny and ends funny (with Karasuma inviting her to live with him in addition to working for the Defense Ministry alongside him, d'aaaawwww), but goes to some surprisingly grim, serious and adult places, with some hints to what’s yet to come.
Vinland Saga - I was kind of already aware what was coming and it did not disappoint. This "duel" between Thorfinn and Askeladd was less a true duel and more just Askeladd savagely beating the absolute shit out of Thorfinn 'til he laid him down on the snow-covered ground, unable to fight any longer. Having to put down the only true friend he'd ever had must have really got to Askeladd, so he was in no mood to play around with this boy who refuses to let go of his fruitless quest for revenge. Askeladd too has his own quest he seeks to fulfill, one with a far deeper, more meaningful end goal born from motivations far more complicated. He sits down and lays it all out for Thorfinn and Canute, giving us the full scope of his backstory that had been touched upon before. And man, what soul-crushing backstory...which somehow did not crush Askeladd's soul and in fact drove him to being the man of unyielding determination, guile, and fighting spirit he is today. It really cements what an incredibly layered, complex, and even disturbing character he is. Like, I was feeling bad for him and his poor mother and felt him totally justified in biding his time and learning from his brutish, deadbeat un-hero of a father until he could finally strike and kill him in his sleep, which he did...and then he went and framed one of his brothers, one who was sincerely kind to him and with whom he got along, for the patricide and saw him hung, with no remorse whatsoever. I've been dragged back and fourth on this bastard like that this whole time - I've loved him, I've hated him, I've respected him, I was disappointed by him, I've rooted for him, I've cursed him and wanted to see him taken down. All the marks of a truly masterfully crafted and well written antagonist who is in many ways the actual protagonist of the story at this point. He’s been the one driving the plot, he’s been the one whose insights and actions have been striking the narrative’s heart and steering the course of events and other characters’ arcs, and he’s the one whose personal ambitions are set to be realized in the end. Canute and Thorfinn are just backseat passengers along for his wild ride, with the latter in particular being stripped bare and shown to us for the sad, pathetic, aimless and broken wretch he is, left sobbing and screaming in a primal rage, confusion, sorrow and pure, raw, unmitigated mental and emotional pain. God, this anime hits HARD.
Magic Knight Rayearth - This episode actually seemed more about the villains than our three heroines, with some new development with Ferio on the side (he wasn't written out after all!). Inouva made one final bid for redemption in his lord Zagato's eyes after his failure two episodes ago (for reals, what was even the point of Lefarga? There'd better be some payoff for him late!) and it's revealed that he's not some elf-like humanoid prettyboy but is in fact a wolf-like creature made of light that Emeraude gave to Zagato as a gift one time. Oooookay then. On the plus side, Terrence Stone's voice acting fits Inova in his true form way better than it did in his elven form. When he ends up getting slain, I was surprised that not only did I feel bad for him, but I felt bad for Emeraude and Zagato as they could sense Inova's death. The two characters I was criticizing last week actually got a really strong moment here that actually worked for me! Oh, and Ferio's little side plot? He, rather out of the blue, remembers that he's Emeraude's brother, but when Emeraude became the Pillar for Cephiro, she had his memory of her wiped so that it wouldn't burden him in his life going forward. This explains his dedication to wanting to rescue Emeraude (on a subconscious level she still meant a lot to him as his sister), and also even gives a more interesting facet to Emeraude's character by having her do something so shady! And not to spoil too much, but this ties into the very convenient timing of with Clef’s final message cut off. “The true enemy you will have to face is....” Seriously, why didn’t the girls stop and question that?
A Place Further Than The Universe - Now that we’re in Antarctica, the show’s got only four episodes left in it’s narrative and so as you’d expect, we’re getting focus and development payoff for our four main girls; Yuzuki, Miyake, Shirase, and Kimari in that order. This one was particularly well timed for watching since it takes place around Christmas! The main conflict is around Yuzuki getting a email from her mother telling her she’s landed a role in a drama that will begin filming fairly soon and she openly expresses doubt that she’d ever see the other three girls again after leaving Antarctica, still not quite grasping that they’re truly her friends. So Kimari thinks up a way to show her how much she and the others appreciate her and really are her friends, which ultimately sees the three girls throwing Yuzuki a surprise belated birthday party just for them, bringing Yuzu to tears because she’d never celebrated her birthday with friends until now. In addition to that wholesome sweetness, we also see some fantastic Christmas-based antics from the rest of the crew, and the notorious moment where Shirase geeks out over being close to a real live penguin. For the most part, this was fluff. But much needed fluff before things are to take a turn to the more dramatic next week...

The Mertens-Bonnibel Twins
Origin:
Biology: Legacy, Biology: Mutant
Being miraculously born of the living womb of Princess Bubblegum, the genetic makeup and powers of Lucián and Longina are an inherited legacy, natural to the ancestral line of their royal family.
Lucián and Longina are mutants and were born with these abilities and their half-human/half-bubblegum looks. The Twins grew up with their holy powers, their genetic birthright.
Complication:
Super Family
From birth, Lucian and Longina have just discovered that each other have superpowers. They have revealed that they and their parents know their secret. Both know they are Supers as well. They have sworn an Oath they will follow the heroic path to the last drop of their hybrid blood, lest they stray from the way and forfeit their selves to their Shadow Selves and their souls to the Devil. Even Mother and Father were young once.
Motivation:
Religion, Revelation, Role Models, Family
1:
Being true brother and sister of the Church of Messiah and Mount Celestia, Lucián and Longina believe they must use their powers for Law and Good. There might be bad consequences for them if they don't - such as a permanent stay in Baator.
2:
The Twins have stigmatic religious visions. In them, they saw Evil become powerful because it was left unopposed... and by the Supreme Deity, Messiah and all the Angelic Hosts of Mount Celestia, the Twins are NOT going to let that happen!
3:
The Twins believe they are not just super crime fighters... they are Heroes and role models for the cause of Law and Good.
4:
The Mertens-Bonnibel Twins are the miracle children of Finn and Bubblegum born of man and mutant and as such fight for the future of the Universe in the name of their family... and woe unto the villain that even dream about laying so much as a finger on House Mertens-Bonnibel so much as a strand of hair.
Faction: House Mertens-Bonnibel Religion: Church of Messiah (Lawful Good) Patron Deity: Arisato Minato, the Boy-Messiah (Lawful Good) Homeworld: Earth (Holy Terra), Solsys Totem: Finn and Bubblegum's Wedding Picture
Birthday: June 2, 299X Zodiac: Gemini - The Twins
Fun Facts: If the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins were Marvel Super Heroes, who will that be? Cyclops (Lucián) and Jean Grey (Longina) for their Mutant Origin and their X-Men side of attitude. Black Bolt (Lucián) and Medusa (Longina) for their Royal Inhuman side of attitude. After all, they're part X-Men, part Inhumans, all Super.
Who do the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins don Costumes as in Halloween? Father David Crowe, Magic Priest (Lucián) and Sister Shannon Masters, Warrior Nun Areala (Longina). Religious costumes for religious high schoolers.
What collectible card game (CCG) do the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins play and love the most? The Eye of Judgment for PlayStation 3.
What are their genderbent selves' names? Lucia and Longinusz.
Personality Profile: The Mertens-Bonnibel Twins, Firstborn and eldest children born of the bloodline of King Finnian Mertens and Queen Bonnibel Bubblegum, are noble yet humble, chivalrous yet mischievous, Lawful yet playful Relic Knights and born Master Card Wars Duelists and Video Game Masters, having these traits from both their parents along with their Persona, Relic Knight Comet and Candy Esper birthright superpowers and the infinite potential they possess hardcoded in their very Human/Bubblegum DNA as part of the package.
Seeing the world through stained glass eyes, Lucián and Longina are Renaissance children who are both Royal Inhuman and Mutant, born with true religious faith in Messiah shared with each other - true faith like the Western Church of the First Dark Age in human history - and as a true brother and sister in Messiah, they pray, sing and give praise to Him feverishly, honor the dearly departed, friend, family, Hero and Saint alike, and their memory in Halloween such as the Raven King of Hungary, Mátyás Hunyadi and remember and give praise to the blue-haired schoolchild - Arisato Minato, some say his name was - who embodied Messiah and saved Mankind from The Fall, from extinction at the hands of Death, long, long ago in the Age of Man in Halloween and Christmas.
Thanks to their religious behavior, Lucián and Longina are beautiful choir singers (with a little youthful heavy metal energy juiced in) who sing holy church music with such Mount Celestian beauty, even the darkest Archdevils fall silent and bow down in heavenly reverence and the most tortured souls, be they from Fiend-possessed chained to the black whims of their Devil masters to screaming psycho with minds shattered like stained glass, are purified and absolved of the blackest sin from their blessed voice. Likewise, the sheer beauty of church music, especially in weddings and funerals, move the Twins to blessed candy tears and into prayer. What makes Lucián and Longina cry the happiest tears of joy and hope is the holy wedding picture of Father and Mother, Finn Mertens and Bonnibel Bubblegum, looking so Mount Celestian in their wedding dresses and so genuinely, divinely... happy.
If the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins have a mental malfunction, let's just say they're suffering from an overzealous little case of what heroes like them call the Messiah Syndrome... all the best heroes have it. One needs only look into the year 40,000 to see what they mean by that: Dark Ages holy warfare meets 30th Century military technology. And yes, the Twins are all-too-well aware they are not as invincible as many a foolish King and Queen before them and are not afraid to let their people know about it.
The Messiah Syndrome. The cross the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins have to bear. Just as Arisato Minato before them suffered, bled every last drop of his blood and gave his life to deliver all of Mankind Salvation from extinction, so must Lucián and Longina prepare to shed every last drop of their Human/Bubblegum blood for the Salvation of all Life for future generations... even if all Life needs no saving. A becoming stigma for their religious background.
