MANILA -- From the word itself which means true, genuine and pure in the local Batangueno dialect, the start of a new decade spelled real disaster for the town of Taal with the eruption of the volcano to which it shares its name with.

Beyond the faces of people and places covered with thick ash, the volcano's eruptions have shaped the geography and the temperament of the town.

Based on historical accounts, Taal has moved away from its original location near the lake after the 17th-century explosion of the volcano to its present location on higher ground.

The original site of Taal town near the Taal Lake eventually became the town of San Nicolas. The upper portion of the original basilica put up by the Augustinians can still be seen in the old site before the latest eruption.

On Jan. 12, the streets of the town were filled anew with ash as the volcano threatened to destroy its nearly forgotten place in history.

A town of heroes

Aside from being the home of the Minor Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours, Asia's largest Catholic church, the town was the birthplace of most ilustrado (middle class) revolutionaries of the 19th century.

At present, the National Museum for Fine Arts in Manila houses a number of portraits done by the 19th-century Filipino artists, including that of a dignified gaunt gentleman in European clothes.

The gentleman in the painting by Felix Hidalgo is Felipe Agoncillo, a Filipino lawyer and revolutionary who represented the Philippine revolutionary government in the Treaty of Paris where the islands were sold by colonial Spain to the United States.

In exile in Hong Kong along with other revolutionaries, Agoncillo spoke eloquently about the country and its people to all westerners who would listen in an effort to change their minds that an educated population with a functional society existed in the islands contrary to the then prevailing western perception of islands filled with savages who were the white man's burden to civilize.

Agoncillo's wife Marcella would be asked by the revolutionaries led by Emilio Aguinaldo to sew for them the Philippine flag while they were in exile in Hong Kong. The flag was later used by Filipino forces.

On the main road of the town of Taal exists the mansions where Agoncillo was born and the house he lived with Marcela and their daughters.

The couple's daughters did not marry and the house was later donated to the government and is now one of four museums in Taal.

The Agoncillos are just two of the revolutionary heroes from Taal and who lived practically a stone's throw from each other.

A few meters from the house of Don Gregorio Agoncillo is the ancestral home of a family of bankers, the Alcasids led by its patriarch, lawyer and former Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) chief executive officer, Herminio Alcasid Sr., the father of celebrity songwriter Ogie.

Two mansions facing each other near the main road are particularly notable being the twin homes of Eulalio and Gliceria Villavicencio and Juan Goco's family. Gliceria was a driving force of the revolution as a financier of the purchase of arms and materiel including helping in funding the publication of Jose P. Rizal's Noli Me Tangere.

The Villavicencio descendants presently run hotels, the Triple V restaurants, and the Flying V gasoline stations.

Goco was the treasurer of the revolutionaries and the forefather of the late solicitor general Raul Goco and restaurateur Roby Goco.

Andres Bonifacio, supposedly roamed along the Pansipit River under the guise of being a cockfighter to meet with Gliceria to secure funding for the Filipino forces to continue its fight.

Gliceria also lent funds for the purchase of the revolutionary forces' first naval battleship, the Bulusan. This seagoing revolutionary unit, called the Batalyong Maluya, was led by another Taal neighbor of Gliceria, Ananias Diokno. Diokno brought the war against the Spaniards to as far away as Iloilo and Central Visayas.

The Dioknos' ancestral house is at the edge of Taal's main road leading to Lemery town.

Ananias Diokno's descendants include former National Heritage Commission of the Philippines chair Serena Diokno, lawyer Jose Manuel Diokno and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno. The late Makati Judge Roberto Diokno was mayor of the adjacent town of San Luis and is best remembered for convicting Romeo Jalosjos in the 1990s.

Further down the street is the Ylagan-Barrion-Innumerable ancestral home.

Businessman Manny Innumerable, a keen photography enthusiast runs a camera museum which was so extensive that when Leica first chose to officially open a business in the Philippines, it borrowed priceless specimens of Barnack models from Innumerable to exhibit.

The family also owns Stage Riggers Inc. whose projects included arrangements for the Southeast Asian games, as well as most foreign artists' concerts in the country.

Maria Ylagan Orosa, a World War II hero, nurse and nutritionist was also born in Taal.

On the same road are the homes of the Garcias, Zagalas and Orlina families. Members of these families include lawyer Ma. Victoria Garcia, the wife of former senator Teofisto "TG" Guingona IV; the late Philippine Army (PA) commanding general (1972-1975) Gen. Romeo Zagala, father of Army public affairs office chief, Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala and prominent glass Artist Ramon Orlina.

Volcanic ash may have blanketed anew the town's streets and corners but it can never cover the town as a narrative of excellence and its contribution to the country's history. (PNA)

Carnival Vista Vacation: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Tuesday morning we had a late brunch as we wouldn’t get to San Juan until around noon. As we all learned during the recent hurricane season, San Juan is actually a territory of the USA. On one hand strange as it was to be headed to a hurricane-ravaged island that was actually part of the USA, it felt good to see the colourful buildings that I had seen in so many pictures had mostly survived!

As our ship pulled into port my immediate reaction was, “Wow, what a cool looking place!” The fortresses and walls surrounding the port leave you with a sense of awe. We took some pictures from our balcony that don’t do the port justice and then headed for “early disembarkation.” I didn’t even know early disembarkation was even a thing, but Carnival had kindly invited us to leave the ship early and we were actually the first two people off the ship. It was a pretty neat experience to be able to see the doors open and the crew preparing for the crowds to come.

We didn’t have any excursions booked as we didn’t see anything that particularly interested us so we winged it and just walked along the water as we decided what we wanted to do. The group city tours seemed a bit lame and the nice beaches were all too far away, so we opted for a self-guided walking tour.

You might actually call it a scavenger hunt as we began looking for some colourful doors that I had found online. (I realize that might sound like the lamest thing ever, but it actually got us to a lot of out of the way places we would never have gone!)

It wasn’t too far into our walk that we had to stop for a break for Anson’s back to rest. Three days before we left he was diagnosed with a slipped disc in his back which had him in an immense amount of pain. It was definitely changing how we were doing our vacation (never stop moving is usually how it goes!), but honestly, Anson has a very high pain tolerance so if he needed to stop moving, it was serious! He had survived the first three days of our trip by taking a lot of ibuprofen and Tylenol 1, so after a break with some more pills, he was ready to go!

I pulled my phone out when we got to the street where the one door was that I had to see and asked a lady if she knew where it was. She told me which direction to go, so we headed up a steep street until we came to the door. In the pictures I had found, the door was red and blue. Obviously, it had been painted, but I was still not missing a picture with this door!

As we continued to walk around the streets of San Juan we came across more colourful walls and beautiful buildings. I ran out of storage on my phone taking pictures in San Juan because honestly, there were so many cool spots!

After talking approximately 1, 286 pictures for me, Anson was ready to sit again! The day before I had asked on Instagram if there was anywhere we needed to stop while we were in San Juan and one of my friends said we needed to go eat at Barrachina. Apparently, it is the birthplace of the Pina Colada and a must try. We headed inside for a pina colada and a sandwich and weren’t disappointed! We sat at a nice shaded outside table and relaxed for awhile (and I tried to delete things from my phone… goodbye, Uber. Goodbye, Amazon app… etc).

When we finished eating we decided to head back to the ship. Anson was in a lot of pain and the uneven, hilly streets weren’t helping his pain. I was happy with what I saw of San Juan in the hours we spent and just needed to get my Puerto Rico Starbucks mug before we headed back.

As we walked back toward Starbucks (yes, I knew where it was already!), we saw a park where a lot of people seemed to be. We walked to see what the attraction was and quickly discovered that people were feeding pigeons.  There was a tree just loaded with the birds (these pictures do not do the scene justice!) and after I took a picture of Anson, the pigeons started to follow him out of the park.

I will forever remember San Juan as the place where I learned that I may be slightly scared of pigeons. There were hundreds of them–maybe even thousands. They were everywhere and when they started flying seemingly at my head (all of them at once it felt like!), it was truly terrifying!! I waved my arms and hollered until I got away from them!

Thankfully, no pigeons pooped on my head and we continued heading to the boat. I ran ahead and went to Starbucks where I got my mug. I met back up with Anson and we headed to the ship. As we got back to the ship’s entrance I was reminded again that we were definitely in the States. The guards were checking everyone’s photo ID (a lot of ports just check to see your cruise card), looking in every single bag and also scanning everyone with wands. Since no one cares how many Starbucks mugs you buy, we got back to the quiet ship quickly. Anson headed for a nap while I lounged on the deck looking at the city below me.

As I sat for over an hour it really hit me how relaxed we were on this trip. Anson’s back pain forced us to slow down a little and it was interesting how it had changed my perspective. I didn’t feel stressed about trying to see every bit of San Juan because, in reality, we wouldn’t be able to see it all during a cruise stop anyhow! The little piece we saw was enough for the moment and simply having the privilege of visiting so many places together was a beautiful thing. The world really is a magical place when you take the time to slow down and allow yourself to truly see what is around you.

City trippin' in Peru

Our trip in Peru was one featuring many different types of activities, which made it very inspiring and rich in terms of experience and memories. We are typically looking for nature-inspired tours, but we don’t want to withhold you from what we enjoyed in the cities – hence the highlights I’ve listed out below.

Lima, the Capital city

Arrival

Lima was the city we arrived at, after a travel of about 20 hours. The climate in Lima is known to be cooler, because of the Pacific Ocean it’s located at. We arrived at 5.10 in the morning with full cloudy skies. To warm up a bit and to have some familiar setting in this – for us – unexplored part of the world, Starbucks was the first place to go, after we dropped off our bags at the hotel. As the first tour we booked only started at 9, we made it a looooong breakfast. As long as you can do it at Starbucks, what’s to complain about, right? Afterwards, we were ready to go for it.

City Tour

The 5 hour tour that we booked had an English guide showing us – together with other tourists from all over the world – the hot spots of the city: – Parque del Amor, where we started the tour – The pyramid of Huaca Pucllana – Plaza de Armas (or Plaza Mayor), with the magnificent Catedral de San Juan Evangelista – Plaza San Martin, which is near the Plaza de Armas, in the historic centre of the city – The catacombs of the San Francisco monastery, which we walked through and gave a lurid impression – Larco museum, which is considered to be one of the best museums of Latin America

Circuito de Playas

After the guided tour, we discovered the sea side of the city on our own. After all, we needed to stay awake up until a decent hour, to avoid jet lag kicking in. So we walked the Circuito de Playas and enjoyed the sunshine breaking through the clouds. As it was a Sunday, many local families were out in the parks along the cliffs. We knew right there this was going to be another amazing vacation.

Fun facts

Our hotel was located in the Miraflores district of Lima, which was partly under construction while we were there. We walked through a small park, which was ran by cats. Not kidding, dozens of them! You know we’re animal lovers right and it was really weird to see, so just wanted to mention that as a fun fact, although I’m now realizing most of you won’t really care, unless you’re as crazy about cats as we are…

Another thing we will never forget is the constant honking of cars. We heard that in all cities in Peru, but as this was our first, it really struck us. We were guessing it’s just a form of code language that you have to know about.

Arequipa

La vida tranquila

Personally, Arequipa is my preferred city in Peru. It’s called the White City and it’s pretty obvious why. Compared to Lima we had clear skies, enabling the sun to lighten up the white buildings and making them almost blinding to the eye.

Our first day in the city – coming from Nazca – was a day in which we didn’t have anything planned. So we strolled the streets and plazas, based upon a map that we had printed, indicating the landmarks. Actually, we really enjoyed it. Normally we have everything planned out and only take the time we really need to see everything before moving on to the next place. That wasn’t the case here and although it required some adjusting to, we’re glad we were able to do it that way.

Lunch

Speaking about lunch with a view! We always have a list of restaurants in our “road book” that we take along every vacation, in which the planning of each day is outlined, including the restaurants which we googled and selected based upon the Trip Advisor comments. Just to avoid avoid having to figure out where to eat when enjoying our vacation. When wondering around the city, we decided to take a leap and have lunch at xxx, which wasn’t on our hit list. We were glad we did – we were nearly alone on the balcony and could gaze upon the skyline of the city and the Misti mountain lying at the back. Wonderful.

Dinner

Actually, summing this all up makes me realize how this really was a bunch of new experiences. A must-do that we had put on our list before heading to Peru was to try the local meats, like alpaca and guinea pig (“cuy” as they call it). So we ordered this at Zingaro restaurant in Arequipa. My husband enjoyed his alpaca. I went for the cuy. Having it served in original form – not cut up – is weird; the teeth are even still in there! The taste on the other hand wasn’t that spectacular, I must say. There’s not a whole lot of meat to it and it doesn’t taste very strong or special. But we’ve tried it, so that’s another one off our bucket list!

Private reality tour

The second day we were in Arequipa, we had a so-called reality tour planned out, with a local guide. We started going to an indoor market, where the locals get their food and supplies. We tried one of the famous “jugos de fruta” (fruit juices) and learned about how religious Peruvians buy unborn alpacas to perform rituals. It was a great opportunity to see the non-tourist side of the country.

Afterwards, we visited a quarry where local families are working the volcanic rock all by hand – a hell of a job in high temperature. Respect, although we were wondering how long it will take before this is being replaced by modern machinery.

Our final stop was a traditional cemetery, which is totally different from the ones we’re used to. Our guide told us that for these families a funeral is a way to celebrate the life of the person who you’re saying goodbye to. These funerals are actual parties where people are having a good time. There’s something to it.

Fun facts

Every tourist in Peru is walking around with an Inca bonnet. We usually don’t give in to these typical tourist souvenirs, but couldn’t resist this time and got one ourselves. To be honest, they are great and we have used them several times since then on our colder destinations!

Getting there

Still relishing our unique experience at Amantani island on Titicaca Lake, we took the 7 hour bus drive to Cuzco. There were other options (taking less time) to travel from Puno to Cuzco, but this one offered the best views and we had quite a few interesting stops on the way.

Our last city tour

During our first day in Cuzco we had a free morning to arrange some practicalities for the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, which we would start 2 days later. The afternoon was spent with a fun guide, explaining us all about the historical capital of the Inca empire. Fun facts

“Chez Maggy” pizzeria is a great place to have dinner. We went there twice: first time alone, second time with a couple of doctors from California that we met during the city tour. Great pisco sour and of course great pizza’s.

Talking about food, we found out that a lot of restaurants are offering tourist menus. We actually got a great 3 course dinner for only 25 sol (which is about 6 EUR). You would expect to not receive much on your plate and less quality, but it was actually delicious!
