!!!NEW REVIEW!!!
the first surviving animated adaption of Dr. Seuss' work. the first cartoon directed by Bob Clampett with his new unit of animators to not involve Tex Avery in some way. the short that, by Clampett's own words, solidified the trust of his animators: Horton Hatches the Egg certainly bears a lot of important firsts. an adaptation of the beloved children's book, Clampett's own love of the story is certainly reflected in his short, nailing the perfect balance of heart, obedience to the source, comedy, ingenuity, and some juvenility for good measure. just as the story goes, the short revolves around Horton's loyal efforts to take care of lazy Mayzie's egg after she skimps out--an effort that is much easier said than done.

oh my GOD the H scenes were so good,,,,,,the spilled milk part(the cat is the ultimate matchmaker),,,,,the deduction,,,,the hand touch and the eye contact,,,,,the eye color scene!!!! the hand kiss,,,,the goodbye!!!! I didn't start out intending to romance H but i am hooked now. it's too good to resist. i am also thoroughly entertained by the tension between H and Watson:))
😍 You found so many scene variations! (There’s one more you might like. Instead of the milk one, If Mc has low strength and u play with Hamish—Mc falls into their arms 🤭).
Aww man. I think so far H and W LT is my fav LT. Might change my mind later as we get deeper, and I know I’m not supposed to have favourites — but it just brings out the best/worst out of them both 😆
H and W is like this (with soo so much jealousy):
H and A is like this: (mc is Marilyn) (it's just a fun time tbh)
W and L is like this: (it's the opposite of a fun time)
L and A is like this: (It's just A enjoying the company too much)
A and W?
H and L… I don’t even know yet tbh 🤔.
This fight? Don't wanna duel, but they do—mutual enemies respect situation?

for years i have been equating this drawing to “Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry”. every time i see it i always ALWAYS ALWAYS! think of Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry.
and you may be saying to yourself, well, Eliza, you indolent galoot, perchance that’s because Chuck Jones directed and did layouts for the cartoon and so of course it’s going to look like the stuff he did a few years after the fact.
BUT! i arrive with stellar news. T&J is the golden age series i have most nostalgic attachment to since i can actually remember watching them as a kid. especially Chuck Jones’ shorts.
and so! as i was watching this particular short this evening, seeing this frame hit me like a ton of bricks. somewhere along the line i saw this completely innocuous cartoon and this particular frame must have buried itself into the deep, cavernous recesses of my fragile little mind and allowed me to make such a connection a dozen years later.
and yes! it is a direct pull:
