You've never seen a healthy dragon. Those bright colors they tend to appear with, reds, greens, blues, are signs of illness, healthy dragons are grey-green, sometimes brown or black. Small holes in the wings, and skinny builds are also common traits of unhealthiness in dragons, dragons should have full wings and bulky bodies. The brightly colored creatures you see are unhealthy.

Even interaction with humans shows unhealthy behavior. Dragons tend to live in large communities, oftentimes thousands strong (though populations have declined greatly), high in the mountains or tundra, they shouldn't be interacting with humans, especially in places with warm summers.

Dragons living alone in caves isn't natural or healthy for them, it comes from them being forced to move south and needing to hide from the sun, and the rest of their communities dying off. Stealing cattle to survive isn't natural for them, it's just their only food source in an environment where whales and krakens aren't common. Even fire breathing isn't healthy for them to use as a weapon, it's only ever meant to be used to warm their settlements, and occasionally for mating rituals.

Even stealing noblewomen isn't something they want to do. It tends to be them trying to find a sorcerer in human territory, but not being able to find an actual one due to modern religions effecting human culture so much.

If you've seen a dragon, it hasn't been a healthy one. It's likely either a victim of habitat loss, or it's been exiled from its clan. Healthy dragons don't want to hurt humans, and an adventuring party wouldn't stand a chance against them.

When there are less dragons in the area people will lament that magic is fading from the world, and that an age is coming to an end. It isn't. Magic is healing, it just isn't there for us.

After all you should know should there be any dark secrets: you are a member after all! A member, not only of the Divine Flock, but also of the Avis Academy, the best school the cult has. Your life is quiet and follows a strict routine, at least until two Strays from the outside, the normal, world are allowed in the normally so closed off grounds and as a newly appointed Wing it is your job to keep an eye on one of them. With their arrival some of those dark secrets may finally come to light…

Important people: Your flock, a group of younger pupils you were responsible for before the Strays arrived. You may not be their Wing on paper anymore, but you still hold a special place in their heart! They do miss you and are looking forward giving you a present on your birthday!

Your volery: whichever volery you joined, you are going to met pupils that are just as enthusiastic about your chosen interest as you are! Some more than others.

Your parents. It’s another question if the relationship between you is good, but important it surely is!

hi !! i'm em, i'm 18, almost 19, and i use she/they pronouns. writing's always been part of my life, i've just never actually believed i could do it. so, here i am, yada yada yada more cheesy shit. anyways, i'm in college so my activity levels are all over the place, i'm hoping having a blog to even myself out and make myself stay consistent will actually work. i love all things dark, gloomy, scary, and puzzle-ey, which goes without saying that my hobbies follow the same tragectory. i've been playing piano since i was four years old and i love writing music, solving puzzles, writing and reading (goes without saying frankly).

a b o u t m y w r i t i n g

let’s get into it, shall we? i really like a blether, and by that i mean i’m indecisive beyond words. my most common genres in the overarching sense is urban fantasy combined with cosmic horror, and high fantasy. i love worldbuilding don’t come for me i’m sensitive.

but in terms of smaller little motifs and themes, i love delving into folklore (slavic and north african, gotta stick to my roots), low fantasy and surrealism, political intrigue, dark romanticism, gothic horror, monster girls, lesbians, a good ole butch/femme dynamic, dead people, ghosts, generational stories, and of course, anything you could listen to depeche mode while reading.

Did you enjoy Jane Austen or Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell but wished for more murderhusbands?

Do you think any book could be improved with swords?

Do you prefer your characters queer until proven otherwise?

Some have called Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner a "cult classic," which is a fun way to say a book is criminally underappreciated. It's a perfect blend of fantasy, intrigue, romance, and edge-of-your-seat action. This forerunner of the mannerpunk (or fantasy-of-manners) subgenre is a marvelous balance of Austenesque social ritual with bloody consequences. A wealth of worldbuilding-through-implication is packed into this shockingly slender volume that leaves the reader ravenous for more.

While it contains far more grit and gore than your average romance, it is still at its core a romance, and a queer one at that - almost every twist of the ever-coiling plot is a direct result of romantic desire either thwarted or indulged. Our heroes, the low-born master swordsman Richard St. Vier and his mysterious academic lover Alec, form the core of this Gordian knot. Though I prefer a Happily-Ever-After over a Happy-For-Now, I concede that Swordspoint's conclusion puts the punk in mannerpunk and thus feels wholly appropriate for this one-of-a-kind story.

Don't shame people for writing or enjoying more grounded settings. People writing speculative fiction that cares about realism in certain aspects isn't stopping you from writing something that doesn't care about realism. "It's fantasy that shouldn't matter" isn't universal, if someone cares about that part of their worldbuilding you don't have a right to say they shouldn't. Just like how somebody talking agaisnt your world for being unrealistic in a place where you don't care about that level of realism sucks, it sucks an equal amount to dismiss someone striving for realism because you'd personally be fine with those aspects being unrealistic.

"Just let people enjoy things" applies to hard science fiction and low fantasy as much as it applies to soft science fiction and high fantasy.

quick worldbuilding note: It’s hard to express this visually, but the dwarves aren’t blind, from the back of the skull to behind the nostril the sides and top of their heads are covered in photoreceptor cells, with a good concentration around the two bumps where the skull meets the neck.

all the other members of their clade have the “eyes” on the snout, but without the neck bumps. the more precise vision came with the development and proliferation of fire. (expect a small redesign of this guy when i get to it)
