Superman: I dated a mermaid.
Wonder Woman: I had a mermaid stalker once who competed for my affection with Steve.
Wonder Girl/Donna Troy: I *think* I dated a mermaid. Not sure. It may have been me. It's all very unclear.
Batman: I once hallucinated that I was dating a mermaid after a boat I was on exploded and a mermaid saved my life by surgically transforming my lower half into that of a fish. I thought I would be trapped underwater for my whole life.
Superman and Wonder Woman: ........
Dick Grayson: I wish I had a mermaid girlfriend.
Wally West: Shut up! You got enough girlfriends already!

May 1959. While the Silver Age and Bronze Age Superman comics shared the same continuity, one important difference was that in Bronze Age stories, magic was real in Superman's world, which it definitely wasn't in stories written during Mort Weisinger's tenure as Superman editor. Silver Age Superman stories would occasionally tease the idea of ghosts or magic, but as the narrative preamble to this story suggests, there would always be a scientific explanation. In stories like this, you could also safely assume Lois wasn't actually dead! (If you're wondering, the "Lois Lane Room" was in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, where he maintained a room full of trophies and effigies of Lois. No, that's not weird at all, why do you ask?)
The most memorable of the three stories in this issue (SUPERMAN #129) is actually the third, which reveals that when he was in college, Clark Kent dated a girl named Lori Lemaris, not realizing she was actually a mermaid:

what bart meant when he told clark to cut himself some slack and trust his impulses: "chill, try your best but don't overthink it'
how clark processed it: thoughtless impulses... good?? clark man now kiss on ex-girlfriend and then pretend it didn't happen bc impulses BAD"
mofo thought it wasn't cheating if he didn't get caught. that hair and that temper, truly he had the dog in him that era 😂😂😂
