If there's one thing I'm proud of as an artist, it's the fact I'm a style chameleon. I decided to sit down and recreate 4 artists I really love, and who better to do it with than with the most varied character in the entire franchise: King Dedede! This isn't just for appreciation though, but a study on how other people translate DDD's design, since character design is a passion of mine!
Let's start with @miniiieevee!
Oh my gosh their art is super great, and I think the most important part of getting the style right was the sparkles. I have never seen someone do highlights this way, and it's both super recognizable and super cute! For the King himself, we have a nice round beak, visibly blue eyes, a distinct head, pointed crown jewel, an undershirt, and stripes along the top of the belt. Like most of us, they use the (owo) kind of mouth and really fluff up the coat. Separate fingers can also show up for posing, following Spongebob physics. The stitching on the gloves and the little round eyebrows are another really cool touch! Out of all of the styles I looked at, this one has the most pastel colors.

Next is @das-a-kirby-blog!
Das-a-kirby-blog has such a cool variety in their work, from really shapey sketches to super abstracted color schemes, which while super amazing, didn't provide me the best ref material. The colors here are frankensteined from a few sources, so I hope they capture their actual base color palette. They go for the pin-shaped route for body shape, with the undershirt (though sometimes there's no under layer), typically black eyes, extra belt stripes, and a chunky diamond shaped crown jewel. My favorite touch is the cottonball on the crown. Like I said at the top, they excel at shapes in their art!

Third is @jojo-schmo!
I've been silently reading their roleswap comic, but I should've been loudly reading it because I super recommend it! I'd also say design wise their Dedede is the most unique! Besides myself they're the only one here to pick the kimono, they have a single blue stripe at the top of the belt, a triangular jewel, and the coolest element of the style, spirals! I've not seen anyone stylize the trim this way, and it's so cool in execution. Another unique element that really adds to certain expressions is the spiky teeth (which matches real life penguins! ...Don't look it up).

Last but not least, @cosmicwhoreo!
God, their art is everything. The flow of the lines is so clean and smooth and everything they draw is super expressive. Their Dedede is by far the hugest, and also marks the 4/5 DDDs with a separate head, and 3/5 with black eyes. We have the belt stripes, occasionally a shirt, and a smooth tear drop jewel, but a uniquely shaped crown band. This design sees a lot of influence from the anime unlike the others here, so the color scheme is the most unique.

As a conclusion, it's really cool to see all the different design elements that we pick and choose for DDD. Some give him his smash outfit. Some people give him a body type closer to K64 or KATFL. Some people draw his eye color, or separate eyebrows, and others don't. There's no detail that's the same across every version, but they're all our lovable king. If you don't recognize one of these artists, check them out! I can only do a fraction of the incredible work they do, and let me know if there's any other characters or artists you'd like to see this exercise with!

Hello!! I really like the way your art looks- style, coloring, and everything!! I’m kind of curious how you draw faces, that’s one of the main things I’ve always struggled with (maybe because I used to just draw a ton of Sans and Wheatley who…don’t have much going for faces)

sooo im admittedly not that good at drawing different facial features/ expressions. the main things i do though are big eyes, lines on the nose and cheeks, big ears. i want it to look sorta like a mix btween cartoony and anime??
might be a little long so more under cut :]
whenever i draw a character, first thing i do is choose a shape that suits them! ill base it on personality most of the time. (explained further next paragraph). for the eyes, theres 2 main ways i draw them! ill either make the pupil half black with a highlight in the middle, or make the eye 2 colours with a highlight on the side!
A big thing i like to focus on is shape language! an example of this is how i draw Pearl and Marina from splatoon! i use sharp, triangular shapes for Pearl, on her eyes, tentacles, clothes, basically everywhere. For Marina, I use round, circular shapes! ig to portray the contrast in their personalities? something like that. My main inspiration for this and my artstyle in general is starrysharks (twt & tumblr)!!!! please check out his art its so shapey and colourful probably my favourite artist ever.
if u struggle w making faces even, what i do is duplicate for example most of the time ill draw one eye, duplicate then flip it lol. u could also use the symmetry tool!! i usually never use guide lines and the sketch is my lineart most of the time.
big piece of advice that helped me a lot is to copy!! if you really like the artstyle of ur favourite show, try redrawing a screenshot from it! just remember to give credit if u reference from an artist👍👍

(MORAL OREL) YANDERE CLAY PUPPINGTON x READER: Headcannons
• The worst yandere you could get in Moralton
• This man is possessive, Manipulative and willingly delusional. Topped with worshipping.
• He’s possessive in the way that he wants to control every aspect of your life to his preferences. Clothes, Food, Mannerisms are all dictated by him.
• Manipulative in the way that he enjoys to gaslight you. What do you mean you want to call your parents? You called them this morning dear. Maybe you should lie down for a while, You don't look too good.
• It’s also in the way that he will convince you that everyone is out to get you, Everyone but him.
• And finally he likes to willingly delude himself into believing this is normal and what he’s doing is right. Choosing to ignore the way you flinched when he kissed your cheek, Ignoring the ways you’d find any excuse not to be in the same room as him. You loved him, You do!
• The worshipping part we’ll get onto later.
• All of what if listed above applies in a romantic scenario. For now we’ll run with that.
• Lets say that you are a new resident in the lovely town of Moralton.
• As the moving truck unpacks your stuff you get greeted by your new neighbours: The puppingtons.
• They appeared to be such a lovely family. A wife, Husband and two little boys. The perfect nuclear family.
• Bloberta was sweet enough to you as she had brought over a welcome casserole for you to have that night.
• Orel was a very charming kid with nice manners. He invited you out to Sunday mass, and despite being agnostic (Or anything of your choice) you couldn't turn him down.
• You got along with shapey just fine too!
• The only one left was Clay himself.
• Clay was presented to you as such a great man, The perfect husband for bloberta.
• He helped you carry your stuff inside your house, He welcomed you in warmly and even made tea for the both of you once you finished unpacking.
• You thought he was a great neighbour and looked forward to talking with him more.
• Clay, however. Viewed you in a different light.
• Whether it was your kind personality, your hard working attitude or just your simple smile you had managed to draw him in. Hook, Line and sinker.
• Despite how amazing and perfect the puppingtons may have seemed to you. You had no clue about the truth
• Clay lived in a loveless marriage. Whatever spark he had for Bloberta had faded years ago. Their distaste for each other only soured with the subtle fights they had behind closed doors
• While Orel and Shapey he did still somewhat care for it didn’t change Orel’s constant misbehaviour in the name of God nor did it change Shapey’s attitude.
• Compile this with his dead end job of being the mayor and everything else you can understand that when someone finally comes into his life he see's them as a saviour, The one who can take him away from this hell.
• He use to drown his sorrow in a bottle. Don't get him wrong, he still does. But now he’s almost been too distracted to pick up a bottle.
• He can't stop thinking about you. The way you smiled, the way you walked and talked. You're entire being was perfect
• It starts off small at first. you're out of sugar and to come borrow his. When you ask he invites you in for tea sessions that linger a little long.
• Then it ramps up.
• Suddenly the rent on your house skyrockets. You're unable to get in touch with your land lord and there are no other affordable houses you can move to. At this point you are panicking.
• That's when clay comes in.
• He offers to pay for your rent with a sympathetic yet cheerful look on his face.
• You deny him, It's too big of a favour.
• He insists though. And since you have no other options you let him lend you the money. All none the wiser to him commanding the landlord to up your prices.
• That's step one. You depend on him financially now.
• Step two comes around when you hear about the scandal involving Bloberta and another man.
• Of course you go over to see clay and check in on how he’s doing. You feel concerned and worried for him.
• When he answers the door you can smell the liquor and see the booze stains on his house coat.
• Your worry multiplies as he invites you in
• You don't know how it happened, But you were pressured into drinking with him, As he wouldn't open up without it being over a drink.
• And as soon as it starts, It ends in his bed. You woke up with the biggest hangover of your life all while cuddling with a still asleep Clay.
• He knew this would happen. He wasn't actually as drunk as he made himself out to be earlier, His years of alcoholism had him build up a tolerance.
• He engineered the scandal getting out, too. It didn’t take much as he already knew how unfaithful Bloberta already was. Shapey was proof of that. So when he finally snapped a picture of the two getting down it wasn't hard to make it spread. Letting him divorce her without too much scorn
• After you woke up you felt ashamed and embarrassed of what you had done.
• You couldn't stay there. You left before he woke up
• But you were stupid to think you could hide away forever.
• The next week consisted of Clay begging you to talk to him. Guilt tripping you into talking with him and coming over. As soon as you know it, you're dating him. Moving into his house and talking with Orel like a mother would
• Clay in a relationship doesn't have many good moments.
• Your days consist of being the stereotypical 50’s housewife for him.
• Cooking, Cleaning, Making beds, Helping out with Orels homework when It’s the days clay has custody.
• You hate it. But you can't bring yourself to admit it out loud, Clay would be hurt.
• Everyday when he comes in from work he expects you to be waiting at the door, kiss his cheek and then go to pour him a glass of scotch
• When you’d do something wrong he’d say nothing but give you the most disappointing looks that you felt shame.
• If any love interests other than him were to pop up he may just invite them out on a hunting trip.
• But the one soft part of your relationship is him giving constant praise and compliments to you when you do everything right.
• He calls you dear, Darling. That sort of thing.
• It was nice enough. So nice that you tried to look past all the controlling habits and manipulation.
• Until he had one too many drinks one day.
• You don't know what it was that set him off that day. Maybe something happened at work, Maybe you did something wrong or maybe he was just in a bad mood.
• But suddenly you were crying. He was screaming and holding a broken glass bottle at you. Threatening and cursing you out.
• That was when you realised how deep of a hole you dug yourself.
• You tried to run, tried to leave but he wouldn't let you.
• He’d lock you in the basement if you got too much of an issue.
• He’d threaten you with anything you have: Family, Friends, Pets, Beloved objects. Anything he can use against you, he will.
• Orel may be a way to escape. However he isn't reliable unless you're a very persuasive person. This is because Clay had probably already gotten to him and taught him a lesson about “Love”.
• This probably got him into some scenario involving a lot of people he likes being put into the basement along with you. It was awkward.
• But enough about that.
• There would be no escaping him, It’s nigh impossible.
• While Clay does love you and worship you he thinks you need to learn a few things before you both can go back to normal.
• Overall, He’s a fucking nightmare.

Any tips on getting a style that's more "shaped"?? I don't know how to describe it- your style is very expressive and you use a LOT of shape language which i admire a TON. Do you have any specific method to drawing the turtles and getting poses to look so fluid and dynamic? Anything helps!!
I HOPE THIS HELPS... and omg thank you ur actually so nice!!
For these drawings of the boys I tend to use the 'marker' brush. I love how thick it can be, and the opacity options for the brush. (I do heavily think art can be swayed depending on the brush u use!) I tend to use pretty basic shapes, cylinder esc shapes and a lot of circles or boxes. The sketch is basically the well... base I use for the boys. I try to also look at the storyboard art for the show, which really helped show their basic shapes drawn quickly yet precisely.
How I tend to get it shapey, is try to exceed bounds, and push for the shapes and squishyness! I use pretty quick lines for rounder lines, and even if some lines are straight add a slight curve to them. Makes em more organic i think :)
I have a really shitty vid of uhh the drawing process ig?? Mind you, the quality is really really bad, i didn't think I'd record it but medibang paint does have a very low-quality 'recording' of art u can toggle on and off!

Hi! Sorry for all the notification spamming, I just really really adore your art & the way you draw characters. It's so cool how recognizable all the characters you draw are, like their features/proportions/style idk its amazing. Do you have any tips for how to make a character consistently recognizable in drawings? Also, methinks Tim as Stray would be so much fun in a TimKon relationship, would you maybe pretty please consider doodling a bit of what you think that would look like?

Ty! I’m just going to answer your first question, even though you asked forever ago 😭 I’ve drawn stray Tim before but we’ll see if I’m up for drawing it again
Anyways, as for making characters consistently recognizable, I think it helps to make character sheets.
Using my ocs for example, when I redesigned Rolin in my new style, I knew I wanted to have a very Shapey look, so I’d write notes on things such as: how the cheek should curve, what the nose shape is like or how many Fronds in his hair he should have lol
As you can see, I even have arrows indicating the motion of the lines. If you’ve seen some of my posts of my redesigns for the dc characters, sometimes you can see notes in them too. Sometimes I write them, and sometimes I just catalogue the set of “rules” I create for a character in my head.
So yeah, for further example, I knew keiko had to have softer shapes to contrast her with rolin’s personality. I can’t find it, but I have a page in my sketchbook just working out the shape of her hair, which was initially supposed to resemble a butterfly 🦋 but then I made it have boxy angles. Whenever I draw them, I guess I go through their Individual checklists in my head.
Like for rolin:
-more sharp eyes, in an almond like shape. Check
-cheek is curved but “steeper” and leads to a somewhat sharper chin. check
- I usually have to redo the nose a lot but once it’s in the right spot for me I check that off ig
Or for keiko:
- rounder, bigger, more oval like eyes. Check
- hair bangs should start a little to the left of the middle of her forehead line, then to the edge of her ear. Check
- her cheeks should be squishy and round, and she should have a smaller face with her features more closer together. Check
And so on and so on, and the character sheets help because then you get into the practice of doing those same lines over and over, and at different angles or expressions. So even though I want to stretch their face as they contort their facial expressions, I still follow the same structure and adjust accordingly to keep their form, if that makes sense, I’m not perfect at it but I like to think my designs are at least distinct from one another and consistently recognizable
And this is a recent example, which I haven’t posted on tumblr yet bc I have yet to color it, but this is me trying to explore barts design and making sure I could still make it look On Model despite the different facial expressions.
So in summary my strategy would be to
1. Sketch and explore the character design, write notes and study what lines or elements work or don’t work
2. Create a list or repository of the essential elements or a set of steps to recreate the same design
3. Practice and make a sheet where all you do is actually recreate that design over and over again, until your hand can just do it without your brain having to recall the steps one by one , if that makes sense
Of course, I like to redesign all the time as well but I try to at least capture the character’s essence 😗

It's 2023 and I'm still using the same template now 7 years in a row! Yippeee!
This year I decided to ramble about each artwork presented so uh. Storytime! Under the cut.
(Also usual reminder that now I have a GW2 side blog so that's where I'll upload GW2 artworks from now on -> @glitchgw2 (except the zine piece because I entered the zine with this blog))
January: I was going through a bit of an artblock, most of the things I drew this month were traced. One of the only things not traced was this Anassy! "Ah, etto... bleh!" I said after tracing the 5th drawing I saw on the internet.
February: a commission! Long overdue, but I finally finished it. Sylvaries are always tough to render. >.< The other things I drew this month were art party doodles and personal stuff.
March: one of the two months where the featured piece is the only thing I "finished" that month. And last minute, too! Made for trans visibility day which was on the very last day of March.
April: due to several things, Tyria Pride 2022's art commission giveaways got delayed to 2023. This was my piece for the person I was assigned to! ^_^ This was fun, I found out some new ways to render sylvari hair...
May: I vividly remember seeing a Diavolo art with this same reference and I was like hey. I could do this too but with Lucien. How haven't I done this before. P.S.: he's actually nothing like Bateman but it's a sick cover anyway lol. Mmm knife...
June: it was a sick (as in like epic) month for me. I reworked Dawn and Incendere (my Ghost OC), welcomed my unhinged self and drew a lot of nsfw. But not good nor holy enough to share. :P But it was a nice practice anyway. I chose one drawing of Dawn because out of everything I drew it looks the most "clean" and finished.
July: I remembered My Life as a Teenage Robot as I do tri-monthly and almost made an AU for Lucien. Almost. So instead I just made whatever this is. This was one of the most fun pieces I've ever did, I finally feel comfortable lining in CSP and just in general this was super shapey and smooth to work on. <3
August: Tyria Pride giveaway commission but this time, in time! I got to work on a lovely charr which I don't do often! My other choices would have been a cropped nsfw commission but I lowkey like this one better.
September: the other month where I didn't draw anything but this. Had a banger idea for Gliaster's future which is them becoming a lich but also being corrupted by malignant powers so they're now even more evil and also driven by vengeance towards the Commander and Aurene. Tried to come up with a design for them, alas this piece. It's... very in progress. But I like said progress so far.
October: the opportunity for an art related full-time job came up which meant I had to up my portfolio and draw some realistic/semi-realistic studies. I was surprised by myself lmao but ngl it was also a big pain in the ass. Art is suffering. <3
November: the continuation of October but now with an original piece! Felt like drawing one of my best friend's GW2 characters. <3 Haven't uploaded this one yet as I might rework the background sometime.
December: and finally, my piece for Commander Of Your Heart GW2 zine! Which wasn't actually restricted to only Commander characters, but any other OCs/player characters too, so of course I chose Gliaster. :D And we can apparently show teasers, so I can include this little bit! But what is Gliaster up to? Find out in February, for free!

Chapter 1:

Smiling and laughing little Wolfwood! This is killing me with so much cuteness. Also, love how he got his big Wolfwood nose as a kid too (I mean, of course he does, but then you never know, an author might make all kids look kinda similiar even unintentionally by giving them big kid eyes, small noses and such stuff...it's just nice to see distinct facial features drawn in different age states)

Livio not saying anything to that in that one panel is telling a lot actually. Now we know in what way he himself is tied to that orphanage...does he consider it a burden too? I wonder if Chapel struck a nerve with that sentence.
And just like that I knew I was gonna like Livio. Oooh he had it coming.
Hmm love this page. It really feels like the start of something.
Chapter 2:
So so proud of him...I read other bookclub posts about how Wolfwood symbolizes the humanity that CAN change and boy is that right.
I can only imagine Nightow having SO much fun drawing this!! :DD I have no idea but if I'd have to guess I'd say he was just waiting to draw a full page cool blockbuster scene of Wolfwood riding a motorcycle with an explosion in the backgrounds. Probably been wanting to do this since some volumes. And finally got his chance!! Cause there was no need to draw this so action-movie epic-like and he still did, hehe.
First of all, this page here looks so cool! Wolfwood is so shapey, but also the pose and composition...*mwah* Then in this fight we get to see just how good of a fighter Wolfwood actually is. Not that we didn't witness that before, but it was often together with Vash, or if alone, like with Ninelives, he was struggling quite a bit. But here to me it felt like we get this glimpse of a trained assassin he once was, fully in control of the situation, being fast and efficient (without killing).
Such badassery!!! I'm a big fan of how Livio, despite being fully indoctrined, still kinda protects the orphanage too! Well, maybe it's also because Chapel is prob sitting there too and they still need to use the orphanage as bait but STILL! I chose to believe that at this point some point inside Livio was still acting out of attachment to his old home.
Chapter 3:
Hey! That's not a nice thing to say boy! D: Also, she's obviously trying to reassure the kids so don't make them more scared by saying it won't do anything!
Oh fuck. The kids are talking about Nico here but this obviously applies to Vash, as well. Wolfwood can not rely on Vash now who is not around to help.
Also, may I say, what an utterly gorgeous drawing of Wolfwood and Livio.

Chapter 4:
Oh I misremembered, he DID mean to kill Livio? Or only momentarily put him out of order, knowing that he has SOME kind of regeneration abilities? I'm not quite sure now. What I do know is that Chapel has a creepy grin and I want that old man out of my face.
Ah hm maybe I should read at least the next page before rambling off. He really only wanted to incapacitate him. I'm relieved!
Rude! You didn't need to throw him through a suddenly spawned set of wood!
At this rate, Wolfwood must be riddled with bullets. Shot from behind, from the front, lost a HUGE amount of blood from his shoulder...
...and yet he's still going on. Oh my boy he's such an awesome character.
(Also quick side note, love how Nightow draws hands)

This is only the second time we're seeing these vials being used, right? Funny how quickly they became such an important plot device. (I wonder when Nightow planned them into the story...I'm guessing kinda late? Just wondering)
He must have really trusted on Livio blocking that thing!

Some more characters into ponies because I feel like it.
Here have some!
Baldi, Principal, and Bluey. Yes Bluey is a dragon because in Equestria Girls Spike became a dog so I guess dragons are sort of dogs in the pony world (even tho Winona was still a dog in said pony world, I still like the idea quite a bit).
Claire and her family as ponies. I've designed Mirror Man before but I've never posted it yet. Just waiting until I'm motivated enough to finish the last drawing that sort of connects with the one that he's in, also it's a little old.
Claire and Bluey. Claire being the only unicorn in her family who has strong enough magic to form a bubble shield (a little idea I thought up inspired by Steven Universe episode "Bubble Buddies" and that one episode of MLP called "A Flurry of Emotions").
Pony version of that one bit in the Moral Orel episode titled "Praying". I might redraw or reanimate more scenes of characters as ponies. Most likely draw idk.
I always wanted Sarge to interact with Soldier for a long while now. (FYI Simmons is jealous in this).
I remember drawing the ponified versions of the RvB characters back in 2019 (mostly because I remember drawing them a lot during school, I'll probably show my old art of them eventually, if people want that).
I even looked for said old art so that I can draw them now and see how much I've improved. I just added scars and such.
I also drew Nicky because I love a bit of Avenue Q.
And finally we have Orel, Doughy, Tommy, Kid One, Joe, Christina, Marionetta, Billy, Junior, and Betty. Some of the kids in Moralton.
(I also wanted to include Anne, Walt, (possibly) both Tinas, Shapey, Block and even Marionetta's little sis but I guess I will post them next time, I'll even include these guys and everyone's names in a separate post.. maybe add some shade.. just three separate art pieces that go together... I guess these are considered WIPs for now).
(idk I'm just a sucker for background/one-off characters... suck potential 💕✨ I would want to include them).

RaaAAaAAuGh
I'm all Art Frustrated, not like Big frustrated when i tty and draw and it doesn't work and i get all Big Sad but just like.. Art Gumpy and i need to grumble about it
I've run into just.. A Number of challenges working on Lazarus's main portrait that are things i run into routinely every time i paint, they aren't like.. insurmountable problems but they're places where my knowledge and skill fall short and every time i have to throw up my hands and say
"welp guess this will just have to be what it currently is cause idk how to make this work how i want and i still got Several miles to go on this thing before it's done"
It's all fiddly weird stuff like.. figuring out how to make the monotone shading layer+overlay technique work the way i want it to, incorporating the linework into the painting to get a more shapey semi-lineless vibe to match my full lineless painting style but like.. Easier, making Meaty and/or wet things look the appropriate amount of shiny and wet, getting the right feel on a loose and messy lineless background(and hinestly just in my painting in general) where it isn't just muddy shapes but it's also not distracting harsh chunks of colour, and really pushing my poses and anatomy to keep things grounded but also feeling fluid elastic and animated(which sometimes comes naturally and sometimes just Won't Happen which is always bizarre and frustrating)..
They all come back to like 2 root causes :
1) learning is hard; from knowing how to find the Right resources, to being able to execute on what those resources are telling you, to being able to then apply that to different scenerios, and have the info stick and stay Understood it's....mmmmMM... the whole process is a nightmare that never works for me. (I go through this cycle all the time of trying to push myself to find teaching resources and try and Learn about what i want to do. often I'll ask around how other people learn/do things in case y'know i have been interpreting the method wrong or there's a better way for someone with my bad brain to do these things... But every Single time all the advice is stuff i already do or is stuff I know Of but can't use because i can't make that lateral leap from Theory -> Application and there's really no one out there tutorializing That step of the process, so I just... Put it away again until I forget what happens every time I do this and inevitably stumble into the same results...)
And 2) way waaaaaay back in highschool i trained myself/was trained in a method that like.. took "know your fundamentals" in a very literal way and was kinda pushed into focusing on making everything ""right"" but rules of realism rather that "right" by how i learned and what i wanted to achieve.
It did and continues to Righteously Fuck Me Up. (Knowing your fundamentals is true and important but there are different Ways to learn and understand the fundamentals that can be very specific to what you want to do and how you learn. Trying to elbow someone into a learning format that takes their art Away from what they want it to be is setting them up for long term issues and potentially loosing their passion, but that is perhaps its whole own other post. I see big proffesionals talk about this on twitter a lot and i get so ffffffrustrated because of my own experiences but i don't say anything because i don't want to Invite twitter users to casr their eyes upon me like that.)
And i'm just UGH so frustrated.. it's all these bitty little things that I know would make my art better but all I can seem to do about it is trundle around in the dark hitting my head against the walls until i either stick the landing through brute force and luck or sit down and give up where i stand.
Cjkdso idk i don't really have a point or concise ending statement to make here it's just really tough seeing so many little ways your art could actively be so much better and closer to what you want but those ideals remain juuuuuust out of reach because you have Brain Don't Work Disease and a rather controlling friend in highschool (_=<=)_ =3*sighs*
#monster noises#i'm a Notorious over-renderer#my instinct is to keep detailing and tightening and detailing and tightening#and it can really derail things to get stuck in that loop#which is when my art that is supposed to be fluid and full of motion#made of strong defined shapes and colours that flow and blend into like.. harmonious movement#always turns out more.. detailed and often perhaps challenging to read#the Ghosts of those strong basic shapes and looks are there but they're clouded by this pervasive semi-realism that sticks it's landing#just a liiiiiittle too far on the side of realism#Harumph Harumph#my severe time and energy restrictions sure don't help none either#but if i start thinking about that i will Genuinely get sad so lets Nooooot go there

UGLYDOLLS PART ONE
My goodness, this is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. To put the significance of Uglydolls into perspective, I genuinely cannot think of a time in my life where uglydolls did not hold some significance. When I was nothing more than a wee little larval form, I would spend hours on Uglydolls.com looking at these little bastards. They hold a special place in my multiple cardiovascular organs, and they always will. Brainworm Deepest Lore aside, the designs of these plushies are delightfully simplistic, easy to draw, and full of personality.
This time I will be discussing the most notable crew of uglies, however next time I will be going into the ones that personally meant a lot to me as a little zygote.
WAGE
Wage is considered to be the first uglydoll. His personality is essentially that of a lazy freeloading employee who doesn’t really want to do his job. This is valid, and I appreciate it. As far as I know, he’s the only uglydoll who consistently wears clothes, and this gives him a boatload of personality and uniqueness. Something I appreciate about his design and most other uglydolls is the intentional ambiguity of the species. Is Wage a dog? Bear? Tasmanian Devil? Who knows, who cares. As far as I know, wage is wage, and that is that. Side note: the smaller plushie of wage is given the special name of “Minimum Wage.” Cute!
WEDGEHEAD
Wedgehead is one of the most unique and fun designs, and one of the most recognizable. I still have the wedgehead plush we got as a tiny little group of pulsating maggotoids, and he’s seen some hellfire. Wedgehead’s personality is a bit harder to decipher, but he seems to be the straight man in most uglydoll antics. His name is also pretty interesting, but its uh...its pretty self explanatory. Theres not much to say about him other than his distinct and lovable design. All friend groups need a wedgehead, and thats a fact.
OX
I think OX is the only uglydolls that I think is just a straight up asshole. His whole personality is essentially being a greedy trickster who will probably try and rope you into a pyramid scheme. I love him. Most depictions show him using his ears instead of his hands, and later models elongate these ears to facilitate that. Ox is shown most commonly with his best buddy (they’re not actually Wedgehead, who both try various get rich quick schemes and inevitably fail. Also, his eyes are his name, which is pretty goofy if you ask me.
ICE BAT
There are two different models for ice-bat. The original toed version and the “changed to and then reverted from” footed version. Personally I had the one that only had feet and no toes (two actually), and when the went back to the toed version, I was very confused. History aside, Ice Bat is one of the only valid bastards on the planet. If I was stranded on an island and could only bring one person with me, it would be my homie Ice Bat. Ice Bat is kind of like the king midas of uglydolls, cursed with a touch that freezes anything. Ice Bat doesn’t seem to care too much, and even though a single touch can freeze you to death, they still manage to be one of the most charismatic and lovable of all uglykind.
BABO
If there is a face of UglyDolls, it’s babo. Most if not all uglydoll content is featured around him, and he has the most love from the creators. Babo is known for his love of cookies and dimwhittedness, but he seems to ooze more personality than that. Babo seems to encompass all that uglydolls seem to offer: A laid back, hedonistic lifestyle that doesnt mess around with bad vibes. Babo is uglydolls. Putting that aside, I would like to wonder what babo actually is. Is that hair on the top of his head? Ears? Pincers? Is babo some strange misshapen earwig? Probably not, however I still like the idea.
CINKO
Cinko was one of my favorite uglydolls growing up, but I’m starting to question that decision. His main gimick is that he’s afraid of water (haha cause hes an octopus) and he is a nervous, shy kid. For some reason that appealed to me as a little worm, but now? This thing would be played by Micheal Cera in a live action movie. He’s the nervous shyboy who probably is an incel but he ends up getting some [REDACTED] by the end of the movie. Love you Cinko, but I can’t not call you out on this. I want to get into the name before I move on. There are several things going on here. He has 5 suckers on his arms, so Cinko makes sense, as it’s basically just a misspelled Cinco (5 in spanish for those who don’t know.) That’s cool and all, but also, it’s pronounced “Sink-O.” Do what you will with that.
TARGET
Target is the oldest of the uglydolls (canonically, not by release date) and he is one of the only uglydolls with hair. He’s considered the grandpa of all uglydolls, and simply wishes for someone to come his hair and give him food. Before researching, I was under the impression that everyone was just deeply terrified of him, and he didn’t really give a [REDACTED]. I assume his name is in reference to his large red eyeball, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the most important feature. This guy is like a hairy dumbo octopus, and I appreciate that. If there’s an uglydoll fandom, I will certainly join it and make a bunch of boomer memes of him, cause I love this gnarly looking cephalopod.
BOP n BEEP
BOP (Green) and BEEP (Blue) are one uglydoll, being a face on each side. They’re not the only uglydoll with this gimmick (TurnyBurny also has this, but we’ll discuss them later) but they are the first. Bop n Beep are occasionally wrapped into Ox and Wedgehead’s schemes, with Bop usually siding with Ox and Beep with Wedgehead. They’re a goofy dynamic that contradicts each other, but these two homies know how to watch each other’s backs.
UGLYDOG
Personalitywise, it’s just a dog. Not much to say, woof woof bark bark yiff yiff etc etc. But design wise? Ok it’s also just kind of a dog. That being said, I love uglydog! It’s cute and simple, and perfectly captures what makes uglydolls so appealing. Look at that tail. It’s coming out of the side of this animal, Uglydog is barely 3 dimensional. Can you draw uglydog? Trick question bitch, yes you can. They’re visually appealing, and can be drawn by even the least skilled of artists. This is why young life form me was so obsessed with these guys. They’re accessible. Could I draw mario? Sonic? Spongebob? Maybe when I was older, but as a 6 year old larva, no, I could not. But could I draw a weird shapey thing with an eye and pointy teeth? Yes, yes I could. Even the least coordinated cilia could draw something that resembles an uglydoll. That is why I love them. Theres no age range for these things, they’re truly a smelly, selfish, hedonistic pal for everyone to love and cherish forever.

Hi! I make comics very similar to yours, with shapey bodies and sticky arms. I make mine in colored pencil and when I upload them digitally they always look like pencil. I've had this question for several years about children's book illustrations too... Do you use a digital drawing device? Do you know how children's books make their drawings? You're are so smooth, and I'm wondering how they look so smooth!

This is different from the questions I usually get, but I’m honestly really excited that someone asked me an art-related question!
When I first started drawing my comics, they were done with black pens on white paper. When I began coloring my POTS Problems, I used Copic markers because I love how smooth they look. Lots of artists use scanners to get nice, crisp images of their traditional drawings, and some edit the colors in Photoshop afterwards to make sure everything is as close to the original as possible–however, I didn’t have either of these available to me, so I had to stick to just taking pictures of my art with my phone and using Instagram filters to get it to look as nice as possible!
Not too terribly long ago, my brother invested in one of the fancy new iPads that you can draw on–I had tested them out in Apple stores and had used one belonging to my friend, so when he bought one I was so excited to borrow it to draw on. There was definitely a bit of a learning curve, but I found drawing on the iPad to be pretty similar to drawing in my sketchbook–but with a wonderful copy-and-paste feature that makes multi-panel comics a lot easier than they were before! I now draw all of my comics digitally and use traditional art with other projects.
As for children’s books illustrations, I don’t work in that field and therefore I don’t know the exact answer here–but from what I know of art and how books are made, I would say that both traditional and digital art are used to illustrate different children’s books. If I were to make my own children’s book from scratch right now, I could use either traditional or digital art. If I went the traditional route, I would need to scan my drawing into the computer (though I suppose I would first need to invest in a scanner!), edit the colors using Photoshop or some other editing program, and then transfer the image into a document design program like Adobe’s InDesign. From there, I could put the words and pictures on the pages and voila! Illustrated book. If I decided to use digital art instead, I would be able to bypass the scanning and editing-in-Photoshop steps, though the rest of the process would be much the same.
The process is probably a bit different for people who are actually in the industry, but I’m not in the industry, and this is just how I would go about doing it. I hope this helps a bit, and good luck with your art endeavors!

Wowzers, thank you!!! I’ve been trying to use shapey stuff more prominently over the last year and I’m glad to see it’s noticeable! You shouldn’t be stressed at all though, I literally use the most default brushes ever hahaaaa :>
-I work in Photoshop Elements 8.
-For almost everything, I just grab one of the first default circle brushes and have my pen pressure do size and opacity. The only difference between them in the menu is preset sizes. If I want consistently dark lines, I’ll unselect opacity.
-Recently I’ve been gravitating back to my old friend brush 63 which does some fun painty rectangle stuff, same settings for pen pressure. You can probs do it with anything that looks like a lil spongy rhombus or whatever

Hi!! Sorry, but do you have any advice for planning out a da-style tarot card?
Hi dear! To be honest I’m completely new to these, all I’ve been doing so far was experimenting and hoping for the best. However, I’m planning on making way more of those, so maybe in the future I’ll be able to provide more useful tips.
Meanwhile I can only tell you how my painting process looked like on that Farris card.
First of all you need to decide on the aspect of your character you’d like to show. In my case, I wanted to show how easily Farris could be swayed if presented with oportunity to get what she wants. And what Farris wants is to resurrect her little sister, whose soul’s been lost to the Fade. So, to get that shite out I’ve decided on adding Fen’Harel so symbolize the Fade, Farris is letting go of her staff and holding an end of a scarf (my thought behind it was the thingy in DA2 that your romanced companion would wear). For the colors I went with red, green, and blue, though all very faint, to respectively hint at love/deeply rooted want, greed, and sadness.
Dragon Age cards can be hella shapey, or hella painted.I’ve found THIS on the subject. This person neatly narrows down the general ideas behind the shapey design. If you go with the more painted figure, keep in mind to add some shapes or patterns in the background to keep in touch with the style. I went for something in between, I think. Or at least that’s how it turned out.
Now, the pose. Deep in my heart I want to believe that once you get a hang of the pose, you are set. It might be my sentiment for any doodle I’ve ever drawn speaking, but, again, I kinda made them work so far. It takes twisting and turning and putting them all over your card, but it helps to figure out the card as a whole. If you feel like a certain pose doesn’t fit your ideas in any way, draw another one. Experimenting is going to take you far.
Farris card was greatly inspired by the ones painted by TheMinttu. HERE is the process of their Solas tarot card. I gave their way a try, only adding some textures on top in overlay.
