Co-owner + head winemaker, Neil Collins, is known as one of the most talented + adventurous wine makers in CA + twice was anointed by his winery colleagues “Wine Industry Person of the Year” (Winemaker of the Year, kinda like making the 5-Timers Club on Sat Night Live) - If the fruit is exceptional, he will take even the lesser known varieties that are grown on the westside of Paso, far from their native regions + turn them into fine wines (something you’ll never find in store-bought wines). Priest Point Park: An Overview

Firestone Walker’s XXIV Anniversary Ale blend announced, with the help of local winemakers.

Paso Robles, CA: In a year like no other, Firestone Walker managed to stay the course and continue an annual rite—the creation of its next Anniversary Ale, blended with the help of local winemakers. 

The resulting beer—called XXIV, marking the 24th year since the brewery’s founding in 1996—is being released today at all Firestone Walker locations, and will soon land in all Firestone Walker markets in single boxed 12-ounce bottles as well as in limited draft format.

“Winemakers are practicing experts in the art of blending, which is why we have sought their involvement ever since making our first Anniversary Ale in 2006,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson.

Each year, the winemakers break into teams; create their own preferred blends from several barrel-aged component ales; then vote as a group on the winning blend—which then becomes the next Anniversary Ale.

The result this year is XXIV—a masterwork of richness and complexity, blended from six distinct ales aged primarily in bourbon barrels, with a small portion aged in tequila barrels. 

Blended to Perfection

This year marked a change in the established Anniversary Ale blending process. Instead of hosting the usual group gathering, the brewery safely delivered the component ales to the participating winemakers for remote participation.

“XXIV is not only special because of the unique beers blended into it—it also represents a time when the world came to an abrupt stop, challenging us to innovate and evolve, which has always been a part of the success of our barrel program,” said Firestone Walker’s Quality Manager Amy Crook, who coordinated the remote blending experience along with Barrel Program Manager Eric Ponce.  

Winemakers from the following Paso Robles wineries participated in this year’s blending: Denner, Halter Ranch, Herman Story, Ledge, Linne Calodo, Lone Madrone, Tablas Creek, Thacher, TH Estate Wines and Saxum. The winning blend—the basis for XXIV—was ultimately created by Winemaker Kevin Sass at Halter Ranch.

For Brynildson, XXIV marks the continuation of a uniquely fulfilling journey for Firestone Walker.

“Fifteen years of blending has resulted in the most complex and thought-provoking beers we have ever made,” he said. “This has been the best ongoing collaboration the brewery has ever participated in.”

He added, “We have all been through a lot this past year; we all deserve a moment of solace and a beautiful beer like this to help us ponder the future.”

“I think I’m making a mistake.” from sean

      ❝  How on Earth—Sean, you’re doing everything right.  ❞

      The lone whistle of the train in the distance carries across the empty field. Autumn wind shakes the leaves of young dogwood trees and pacific madrones. They’re far enough away that they should be safe. Kate presses the soda can against her black eye, cold condensation trickling from aluminum to bruised skin. Kate wonders how she’ll explain a swollen purple eye to her mother—the woman who always jumps at any accusation of bad mothering being levied at her. God forbid their family charade be found out, lest Kate suffer another punch to the gut.

      Fog clouds lazily trace the slopes of the hills, swallowing the long, glittering arm of the Milky Way. Kate takes a long sip on the soda—fizzy, with a hint of cherry beneath the cola flavor—good, but not as amazing as ginger ale. She’s half-tempted to start another debate with Sean over which soda is the best, but she saves her words to savor the silence. In the dark, she can just make out the outline of Sean’s red-and-blue wolf emblazoned on his hoodie, the words SQUAD lost in darkness. Bone-deep chill seeps through Kate’s navy cardigan, goose bumps prickling the fabric. The door to the abandoned shed is locked tight, and no other shelter remains beyond her car. But going back to the car is too painful for Kate to contemplate. So they stay in the dark, watching the empty train tracks at the bottom of the slope.

      ❝  I don’t know your dad as well as you do, but I think Esteban would understand.  ❞  her voice is higher, more strained than it should be. She never understood Sean’s penchant for cigarettes before, but she’s starting to see the appeal,  ❝  He was a high school student once, he must know how crazy homecoming can be.  ❞

      Pebbles rattle beneath their feet, the blare of the train filling their world for several seconds. The hulking metal beast appears in a flash, train cars whizzing past their fragile bodies. Dust on the tracks is whipped into a frenzy, stirring shrouds of dirt thick enough to rival the fog.

      ❝  Imagine if we hopped that train. Maybe it would take us all of the way to Los Angeles. That would be making a mistake, but it could be fun.  ❞

      It’s a silly little possibility that sticks with Kate in the sleepless moments before dawn. But Sean and she have their respective responsibilities: baby siblings to wrangle and parents to please. At the very least, it’s a fun digression from the matter at hand. She’s stalling now, eventually they have to face the consequences.

Paso Robles, CA - First time wine drinkers. Where to start?

My girlfriend and I rarely drink any alcohol and want to experience some wine tasting/vineyards. Where do we start? I've been lurking some subs and came across, ONX wines (do the vineyard drive), BOOKER, SEXTANT, LONE MADRONE? What do we do to start off with? No idea what we're doing or what part of Paso robles to stary. some advice would be great!

Drum roll - In 2015 + 2020 winery peers anointed Neil Collins of @lonemadronewines Wine Industry Person of the Year (a.k.a. winemaker of the year, kinda like making the Five-Timers club on Sat Night Live) - If the fruit is exceptional, he will take even the lesser known varietals that are grown on the westside of Paso, far from their native regions, + turn them into fine wines. He is fearless. His obsession goes way beyond the wine; it goes to the vineyard, to the soil, to those vines that are grown in well-cared for vineyards. It's as if he's in the room but his feet are walking through the vines. This is a common occurrence. When Collins sees bottles, he sees vineyards. And when he sees vineyards, he sees farmers, which he deems to be “ the true badasses” behind it all. To pass muster vineyards must be organic or sustainably farmed by people Neil would want to invite into his home + break bread with, no compromises on this. "We're working with vineyards that we absolutely love, + our goal is to continue to work to do a few things very well. I have a very distinct idea of what I want to make, + it is not the big, typical Paso wines that have become popular. We want to offer something a little more graceful. We want to make what we, as a family, reach for when we sit down to have dinner“ says Collins. Amen. Always a crowd fave: 2017 Oveja Negra 45% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 24% Syrah, 5% Counties Old Oak + Willow Creek District The goal here was to craft a balanced wine, with ample, yet not overbearing fruit, nice spice + game notes. Striking but with restraint. Objectives achieved! Its rich opaque garnet color, delivers a nose of fruit + charcuterie. Add in spice, likely brought by the stem inclusion + a whisper of menthol. Think of lusciousness, with luxardo cherries dipped in chocolate. The bright pomegranate seed brought balance along with the classic chalky Grenache tannin. It is long + will live long. And it’s asking for cuisine, ie, Herb Crusted Lamb, Lone Madrone’s Chef Jeff’s Lamb Burger, Portabella Tacos @ Halfway Station, Cassoulet. Perfect for cooler weather.
