Hi there, I'm writing a book that occasionally has lockpicking. I'm up to a bit where a character gets a new, better lockpicking kit. And for a bit of dialogue to work, there needs to be a rare lock pick that's impressive. But even with my research I can't find anything like that. So I'd thought I ask here. Is there a rare lock pick you all in the lock picking community would be amazed by? And if not, is there something like that which would cause the same amount of amazement?

I have no idea how they managed to fuck it up like this, but facilities at our apartment managed to only halfway lock the door to the boiler room after they came through for routine prev. mx. on it and the furnace. It was fine for like 3 weeks before randomly managing to backslide the deadbolt enough to open itself without anybody touching it.
After two weeks of this I have finally gotten annoyed enough to go grab my picks and relock it myself.

I want all y'all to know that the locksport sub on Reddit is currently having a lively discussion about lockpicking in a zombie apocalypse, as a result of a writer doing research for their novel.
Most of the time, this sub is pictures and videos of picked locks and asking for advice, but every so often a random non-picker comes in asking a question about lockpicking in general and everyone's feral gremlin side comes out and it's awesome.

My special interest lately has been lockpicking. It’s a fun little hobby and not terribly expensive to get started. I’ve always loved that I have and know how to use tools. Being resourceful is a major source of validation for me. This is just for me, though. The rush I get from popping open a lock after hours of fiddling and trying to figure it out is honestly so special. If you’re interested in trying your hand, you can buy a starter pack of lock picks pretty cheaply, 15-30 bucks. I got the genesis set from Covert Instruments for $28 I think. Each lock is like 5-100 bucks depending on quality and brand. I bought 6 for $50 just to try them out. I’ve been posting TikTok’s of the ones I’ve defeated here:
