Yeah that's it that's the tweet. The last guy was ousted (and maybe? poisoned? he's still alive) despite being actually pretty good at the job all things considered. The current main contender for CEO is Gwede Mantashe who is deeply, deeply invested in coal and petroleum.
There is absolutely no way out of this in the next 10 years, but people keep acting like there is. At some point I will have to write up the collection of thoughts I have on how all these things come together. In the meantime, here's one hint: this is the graph of urban population in South Africa over time.

So this is the start.... by this winter, there may be rotating blackouts across a number of European countries (in South Africa we call this load-shedding).
Top tips for surviving all these new ways governments punish citizens.
Get a gas heater if you don't have a woodburning fireplace. You get quite nice, three panel ones that run off an 9kg EPG bottle. On wheels making it easy to roll around. Mine heats a large open plan space very quickly on 3 panels and then I turn it down. If I have it in a smaller room, I run 1 panel.
If you can't replace your electric hob with a gas hob, then at least get a Cadac two plate portable camping gas hob, with a whistling kettle. Mine has been a godsend in this year's heavy loadshedding. I can still drink tea and make food.
Invest in rechargable emergency lights. I have a Maglite in each of my main rooms plugged into the mains and set to come on automatically when the power is switched off. This makes a real difference at night, when all the lights suddenly go off. My house is automatically illuminated.
Buy yourself an inverter generator for running the TV and wifi. I have a rather nice small Ryobi 2200i that is not so heavy that I can't move it around by myself. It can charge your phone, run the TV and a few lights, or boil a kettle. Great as emergency backup. But get a fuel can as well.... The tank is about 20l and I can get about 4 hours of use before it runs out.
Buy yourself some powerbanks. I have at least three. I charge them up alternately and always have one handy to charge my phone, so that if I forgot to charge it before the scheduled outage, I am never stuck with a flat phone.
Set your Netflix account up on your laptop. If my generator runs out of fuel, then I don't miss the end of the show I was watching.
Keep lots of cooler bag ice-bricks in your freezer, or make your own by half filling old cold drink bottles. These help to keep the freezer temperature low and will save you on food wastage.

I am so unbelievably angry. I've waited 13 years for @avatar : The Way of Water. We went to go see it today but due to power outages the movie was interrupted 3 times only to stop not even halfway through after 4 hours. We got the refund but it's not the money I'm worried about. I spent the last 13 years beyond excited for this exact moment. I read every single piece of work or fanfic I could find. I've watched Avatar 8 times already, it's been my favourite movie since I was still a small toddler. I can't get back that excitement for those beginning moments. I feel so angry and so hopeless and now I am going to write the most gut wrenching fanfic, the type that makes you cry your eyes out and refuse to exist anymore. Because that is how I feel right now.

Update on the state of things.
Yo! Small update from my end.
My country is experiencing load shedding daily. My power is off daily for 8-12 hours making it impossible for me to pretty much get anything done and it has been like this for a while. Sorry but I have no estimate on the next update but I am working on it when I can.

A friend recommended 'Grave of the Fireflies' but I don't think my heart can take it
Any recommendations? I love Taika Waititi and Wes Anderson as reference and movies by studio A24 so you can see my kinda style. Not too sad though my heart is weak and soft

💡NIGHTSHIFT🔦
Thanks to #loadshedding, we got up at 2am to work😲. We have to work when the power is ON and nap when the power is OFF🕯️! Yesterday, during daylight hours, we only had 4 hours of power. We are lucky in that we can make videos or post photos at any time of the day. I feel so sorry for businesses that can only work during office hours here in South Africa😢.
In any case, it is cool at 2am and it made me wish I could sit around a nice, warm fire…like this one!

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT
i knew were losing power for two hours this morning so i set a super early alarm to make sure i had just enough time to make coffee before we went off, even though i knew doing that would fuck up my fucked up sleep patterns even more than usual but fine whatever, EXCEPT the alarm just went off and i got up feeling like dogshit and i went to turn the kettle on and...
there is no power.
because we went up a stage in the night, ie they added an extra two hours of power cuts without warning anyone.
so now i will have no coffee, or tea or toast or ANYTHING, until 10:30am.
i wanna die
