What is difference a week makes in the world of fungi. There was barely anything to look at in the woods last Saturday and this week, there’s lots of activity including my first forage of Giant Blackening Polypore. It’s easy to mistake it for Chicken of the Woods and also needs cooking before eating. It can be chewy but we have some excellent young specimens popping up all over the place so my first experience was yummy yummy yummy. And not chewy at all. Each object is an artifact. Each artifact represents a wealth of stories of lives lived, of families, friends, and generations of people who lived on the sea. Maybe you know some stories like these. Taking note of all the things that grow in this Amanita muscaria spot. Stropharia ambigua, Panellus serotinus, Birch tree(?) and some mysterious little brown mushrooms. The little brown mushrooms and Birch tree are the only thing growing right now, the rest was there in the fall. I had the pleasure of photographing my Saturday evening a couple weeks back for a @nytimes project that celebrates arguably the most special night of the week. Nik Cohn encapsulates the place Saturday holds perfectly - “… it’s a time of mythic potential and mundane reality. It’s a fantasy space that only opens at the height of the weekend. Nestled protectively between two days free from work, it represents the fleeting opportunity for pure self-fulfillment. It’s the night when we can make ourselves believe that anything could happen, even though it hardly ever does.”  ·  Bumps raised on my skin as I opened the link this morning. One after another, gorgeous, insightful and poignant photographs provide windows into lives around the world at the same time on this one special night. The lead photograph by Alec Soth @littlebrownmushroom sets the tone: we’re a resilient species and, thankfully, one that is able to adapt and find joy in trying circumstances. Moises Saman @moisessaman brings us an intimate portrait from Amman of Atef, a migrant worker, wrapping up supper in their makeshift housing. Adam Ferguson @adamfergusonstudio , who in my opinion is one of the greatest photographers of our time, shows us a beautiful moment of a couple, about to be wed, making do with a virtual celebration with friends. And then there’s Genevieve, in my photo, making her best shot to unseat me as Saturday Night Bocce Champ on the road out front of my grandma’s farmhouse. I love survey projects like these.
