Nothing like reading in your own garden in early spring 🌻. Under a surprisingly blazing sun, I went on with my reading of Melville's Benito Cereno. My edition has quite the impressive amount of supplementary material, including the diaristic narration that inspired the work. I've been reading this for an Anglo-American Literature course, and it fits the In Translation entry of the Tackle Your Classics reading challenge.

“[His] writing is a sort of mental masturbation. He is always fucking his imagination. I don't mean that he is indecent, but viciously soliciting his own ideas into a state which is neither poetry nor any thing else but a Bedlam vision produced by raw pork and opium.”
-Lord Byron on John Keats. Letter to his publisher John Murray, 9 November 1820.

January 14th 💞
From Shakespeare to Bronte.
Jane Eyre is still as wonderful as I remember. The prose are everything.
I have to write a 600 word paper on it but I have so much more I want to say.

I'm visiting my family now, but I moved into university accommodation last week. I have mixed feelings; on the one hand, I miss my family and my pets, and my bed, and my housemates are questionable, but on the other I am loving the independence I get to have and the location is amazing.
At home, I have to drive to get anywhere since everything is so far away but at uni, I can just.. Walk. Catch the bus. I'm bored? The gym is next door and so is the park and the aviary and a bunch of cafes! And all the jobs I have applied for are a ten minute walk or less.
I have a few things to get done before I go back, like clean out the guinea pig cage and do some laundry since I've spent the last 3 days just relaxing (which was needed).

So, back to class after my first week off since the beginning of the semester, I think it's time for a small assessment.
I like uni. It's a nice change, now I know where my classrooms are and I've only been late once. I finally have a regular sleep schedule. I'm genuinely feeling more happy, I'm not crying due to stress every week.
I did so much reading! Othello, Macbeth, Iliad 1-8 and a few extra things so I'm really proud, such an improvement compared to last year.
However. I still need to figure out how the library works and I haven't started on my master's memoir. I also haven't managed to socialize and still don't know anyone in my class so I tend to feel quite lonely.
See you later!

Uni is almost back in session again: there’s sooo many books I have to read for literature class! Time to give up life and get into it (for the first time I’ll be able to reach my Goodreads goal lol)

I had to write an essay on Baudelaire’s view on vices and I ended up with an existentialist text full of metaphors, 600 characters longer than the maximum length

October 20th 🖤 ~ thursday
📓 Day 2 of the #studyingunderthefallingleaves challenge
~ Share your goals for this challenge. What do you want to accomplish by the end of it?
I hope that with this challenge that I get better talking about my study journey and sharing more about my fears, struggles and successes. I’m learning at home so don’t have that classroom/fellow student environment that many people do. So I’m hoping that I’ll meet people here on tumblr and can make friends this way.
